ANNUAL PICNIC
The Annual Picnic at the Schellin’s Farm in Garden Prairie drew 42
members even though it was very hot and humid. Thankfullly, the
large trees in the yard provided a lot of shade and with a nice breeze, made the afternoon
a bit more tolerable. The little 'birds flew in while others came in everyday cars. Dan Mrozek,
Jr. served again as chief pork chop and hamburger griller while Ken Smizinski boiled the
corn. The buffet tables held beans, salads, rolls and more. There were many dessert choices
including Mary Keil's delicious coconut cake. During dinner, Ken Smizinski thanked Lloyd and
Joan for their gracious hospitality and Dan Pritchett talked briefly about the Fall Tour that he
and Melinda are planning.
Some of the members stayed a little later and enjoyed a fireworks
display. Lots of ooohs and aaahs. Thank you, Lloyd, that was fun!
Yet again, members generously donated
diapers and pull-ups for the People's Resource
Center food pantry. When they are
repackaged, the diapers and pull-ups will
benefit over 140 families. Thank you all for your
thoughtfulness.
Thank you to Joan and Lloyd for hosting
another wonderful picnic. Also, thank you
Dan Mrozek, Jr. for grilling the meat and
to all those who brought dishes to be
shared and who helped with the clean-
up.

Thunder 'n Lightnin' in the Smokies 2018
CTCI International Convention – by Jim Wilson
Our journey to Knoxville began on Monday, August 13. We made the trip in three days so as not
to stress ourselves or the car. Jane and I made the drive uneventfully except for a brief scare in
western Kentucky. The car began to surge in the hills at 70 mph. We pulled in to a Ford
dealership in Frankfort, Ky. They told us, "We have no one to work on that car". We checked all
the plug wires and were on our way, not driving over 55 mph. for a while. The rest of the 1,532
miles we drove our '56 'Bird was trouble free. I blame the issue on bad gasoline.
We arrived in Knoxville on August 15 and checked in to the Crown
Plaza, parking in the garage with a few other Thunderbirds. A ten-
minute walk through Market square and we were at Knoxville
Convention Center, the site of the concours. Wednesday evening
was the "Welcome to Tennessee" theme party buffet dinner. We
renewed acquaintances with Bill and Sharon Jurkonie, Perry
Anthony, and Paul Mounts. Gordon Gluff and Mary Ziemba from
CTCC flew in and rented a car to attend the Convention.
Thursday morning, I had judge's training with Doug Wilson while Jane
visited a local art museum. Early that afternoon I moved the car in
to Knoxville Convention Center in a spot assigned for the
concours. Later we took a bus from our hotel to "Dolly Parton's
Smoky Mtn. Adventure". We watched the show including singing,
dancing, acrobats, and clowns while enjoying an ample chicken
dinner.
Friday was the concours. I judged undercarriage on Senior cars on a
team with Bill Phelps from Dallas as captain along with Bob Bly and
Frank Navratil. All the special items on our car worked except for
steering wheel adjustment. Later, Justin Minter applied enough
muscle to move it but Peter Eisenberg said he could not reverse the
point I lost! Sandra Hood was chief judge for the car and she was
aware that it was driven from Chicago. That evening we ate at
Cafe 4 and enjoyed the Street Party in Market Square.
Saturday morning, we lined up at the Women's Basketball Hall
of Fame parking lot for the Smoky Mountain Tour. The first leg
of the tour took us through the city of Alcoa. The second leg
found us at the Harley Davidson Trail of the Dragon where we
stopped at a scenic overlook. The third leg of the tour was
Foothills Parkway with stops at two more scenic
overlooks. Enroute to the fourth leg, Smithview Pavilion, for
lunch, we encountered a massive rain storm. Defrosters
worked fine, vacuum wipers not as well. After lunch we
allowed Google Maps to get us back to Knoxville. Several
'Birds followed us.

At the awards banquet that evening I listened to the Concours awards for '56 and figured I was
out of luck. Then, surprise, they announced a Gold Award for our car, elevated to Senior status!
Sunday, we left Knoxville for a two-day visit with my brother in Oxford, Ohio. We parked in his
garage and decompressed.
Thursday, August 23 we arrived home. The most harrowing part of our trip was construction on I-
355, close to home.
