While many of our friends outside the university might think we take a break

along with the majority of our students during the summer months, the

incredible staff of Enrollment & Academic Services is busy all summer taking

care of business. On August 9, the Registrar’s Office organized and facilitated

two graduation ceremonies at Reed Arena for more than 2,000 Aggie

graduates, and on August 26, the Class of 2023 entered the classroom for their

first fall semester at Texas A&M University. While the calendar might not

reflect the official change of the season and we haven’t yet got a break from

the Texas heat, fall has arrived at Texas A&M University.

On August 20, we hosted a retirement reception for Janice Crockett, who

served the university for 36 years. I appreciate all the work she did for our

division and as my executive assistant. Happy retirement, Janice!

Join me in welcoming Angela Catlin to the team. A 17-year employee of

Texas A&M University, Angela most recently worked in the Office of the

Vice President for Research as the Executive Assistant to the Associate Vice

President and Research Compliance Officer before starting her new role as

Executive Assistant to the Vice President for Enrollment & Academic

Services. Angela graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in

elementary education and received a masters in library science from the

University of North Texas. A 4-H adult leader, she serves as the co-chair of

the Family and Consumer Science Division of the Brazos County Youth

Livestock Show.

Don’t forget Pillars of Excellence Award nominations

are due September 12. Please join me on October 22

for the awards presentation at our

Develop & Thrive Workshop.

Interim Executive Director of Admissions Announced – The Office of Admissions is excited to have the continued leadership of Chris

Reed in his new, expanded role as the Interim Executive Director of Admissions. Chris’ interim role includes oversight of Admissions,

Recruitment, Operations, Customer Service, Counseling and International Student Services. His office is in the Koldus Building, Suite

217.

Higher Education Center at McAllen Now Accepting International Students – The Higher Education Center at McAllen (HECM)

opened its doors in Fall 2017 giving students from the Rio Grande Valley an opportunity to earn a degree from Texas A&M closer to

home. Thanks in part to the tireless efforts of Texas A&M’s International Student Services Office, the Department of Homeland Security

has approved the HECM to host F1 Visa students. Beginning with freshman applicants for Fall 2020, international students will be

included in the populations admitted to the various majors at HECM.

Record Applications and Admits to the Remote Engineering Academies -- Much like the unprecedented growth in freshman

applications to the University the past admission cycle, the remote Engineering Academies set some records of their own. For Fall 2019,

total applications increased by 26% and total admits increased by 45%. With the recent addition of the Academy in Midland, students

now have seven locations at which to begin their engineering studies. Currently, the Academies at Blinn-Brenham and Houston

Community College have the most participants set to begin classes this fall with 123 and 110 respectively. The long-term goal is to have

100 students at each Academy location.

Scholarships & Financial Aid

Scholarships & Financial Aid Spirit Committee – Throughout the year the financial aid workload is pretty steady. However, during the

summer months, the typical workload of financial aid advisors cranks into overdrive! The Scholarships & Financial Aid Aggie Spirit

Committee works hard to elevate team members and boost in a high operations tempo. This committee is an internal team that plans and

delivers motivating activities and treats throughout the year. Most of the activities are seasonal such as holiday festivities or Aggie spirit

game days while some are complete surprises like scheduling a Reveille visiting or purchasing snow cones for the whole office. When it is

over 100 degrees outside there is nothing more refreshing than a cold snow cone for the afternoon!

The 41 student workers and 73 full-time members of Scholarships & Financial Aid are grateful for the sentiments and dedication of the

Aggie Spirit Committee!

The Scholarships & Financial Aid Aggie Spirit Committee works to boost moral with events

such as a visit from A&M’s first lady, Miss Reveille, or a Blue Bell ice cream break.

Tillman Military Scholars Program – Texas A&M University is proud to be a University partner of the Pat Tillman Foundation. The Pat

Tillman Foundation provides scholarships for degree-seeking veterans, active-duty military service members, and spouses of veterans or

active-duty service members.

Scholarships & Financial Aid is exceptionally proud of the two Aggies selected to join the 2019 Tillman class. Blaze Belobrajdic and

Justin Gor have commendable service and proven leadership both in and out of the classroom. They are exemplary individuals who will

have incredible impact in the future. This scholarship program provides more than funding, it provides a unique opportunity to belong to a

dynamic network of individuals from across the country who support one another’s pursuits for the betterment of the nation.

The Pat Tillman Foundation recently hosted its annual Leadership Summit in Chicago, Illinois, in July. In addition to engaging scholars,

the Leadership Summit offered an opportunity for University Partners to connect with one another. Jeremy Tanner of our Veteran Services

Office represented Texas A&M this year.

To learn more about our Aggie Tillman Scholars, please visit https://pattillmanfoundation.org/meet-our-scholars/

A few improvements that have made a difference – Scholarships & Financial Aid are pleased to announce a few enhancements made

this year to improve our customer (students/parents) experience and to reduce workload on our team members.

Verification Portal! Our team can process approximately four verifications in the time it use to take them to complete one.

Communication efforts! Increased communications to students/parents, including text and personal phone calls to students to request

outstanding verification items needed.

Chat bot! Ms. Rev continues to answer hundreds a questions a week with a high level of accuracy, and we recently extended Ms. Rev to

assist with emails received.

Additional disbursement rules added for specific scholarships in order to ensure scholarship funds are posted sooner rather than later.

We are very excited and very pleased with these improvements!! #worksmarternotharder

Dinner in a U.S. Home – Want to meet international students and share a meal? Dinner in a U.S. Home (DIAUSH) provides an

opportunity for international students to connect beyond the Texas A&M University campus and to better assimilate into the Texas A&M

and Bryan/College Station community. This program is designed to foster new friendships that promote cultural learning and appreciation

for both hosts and students through an open exchange of cultural experiences, customs and ideas.

International Student Services is recruiting interested individuals or families who are willing to open their home for one evening and invite

an international student for dinner. Email [email protected] or call (979) 845-1824 to learn more or volunteer.

Enterprise Information Systems

Banner 9 Enhancements – The implementation of Banner 9 resulted in enhanced experience in registration for students and advisors.

A new version of Class Search is available for employees who have access to the Howdy Advising Tab. The new version is based on

Banner 9 self-service technology that is also used for the Student Profile. The Student Profile provides students, advisors and other

authorized employees with a one-stop view of data including holds, registered courses, billing information and financial aid (known as My

Profile for students).

A new Degree Progress panel is now available for advisors in the Student Profile. A Time to Degree graph shows the number of hours that

apply to the student’s degree (both completed and in-progress registered hours). A Howdy degree evaluation is run to determine the hours

that apply to the degree.

The new Registration Worksheet enables students to create their schedules in advance of their registration time. Academic Advisors have

the option to provide schedule suggestions by creating an “Advisor Recommended” version of the worksheet for their students. The

Undergraduate Degree Planner (UGDP) has now been integrated into the Registration Worksheet. Students and advisors are able to create

a Registration Worksheet by selecting courses from the UGDP and saving them as a worksheet. This will help speed up the registration

process for students as well as help keep them on track toward their degree completion.

Learning Management System Personnel Join EIS – EIS recently welcomed the Learning Management System (LMS) team to the

department. The LMS team, which moved from ITS, currently supports the current Blackboard LMS, Mediasite video streaming system,

and the faulty eLearning tool application. The effort to implement a new university-wide LMS will begin later this fall.
