September 2019 National Senior Center month is celebrated every year in the month of September. This time allows us to acknowledge the many wonderful things that take place at our Senior Centers. The theme for this year is “Senior Centers: The Key to Aging Well”. Aging well means different things to different people. For some, aging well means Growing. They want to understand other cultures, meditate, and develop a more spiritual life or practice gratitude daily through journaling. Others see aging well as having time to devote to Learning, whether it is a new language, tap dancing, or taking up pickleball. Others see their most important work as Connecting to family, old friends, and growing new relationships. And some see Giving back at the senior center and within the community as the thing that fosters purpose and a more meaningful life. But most people want to incorporate a little of all the above while they are on their journey to reach their full potential. Senior Centers hold the key to enhancing all these varied experiences that are fundamental to aging well. (NCOA-2019 National Senior Center Month Program Guide) Our four Senior Centers offer many opportunities to our members to Grow, Learn, Connect, and Give. The hope is for there to be something for everyone to enjoy and take part in. We are thankful for our partnerships with local businesses and universities. These partnerships allow us to provide educational programs, special events and many exercise groups. The involvement of our Center Directors in both planning, coordinating, and teaching programs is very much appreciated. We thank you for being members of Downtown, Linwood, Northeast and Orchard Park Senior Centers. Your membership gains you access to activities at any of the locations, so go try something new! Make sure to look through this month’s Compass for the many activities that are taking place to celebrate you and the Senior Centers. Special thanks to the staff and volunteers at each of our Centers for all they do to assist the Directors and the Centers with day-to-day activities. Stop by and give a big thanks to the ladies making it all happen; Jennifer, Cherise, Carnesha and Diane.

Linwood Senior Center Our theme for National Senior Center Month is” The Key to Aging Well.” That is our goal at Linwood. We all want to age well, and you can when you look at several categories of your life. Body, mind and spirit are the “keys” and are important in everyone’s’ life. At Linwood we have many exercise classes to promote a healthy body, from Stretching & Dynabands, to Arthritis Exercise, and Line Dancing (you will have so much fun at Line Dance, that you won’t realize you are exercising!) In regard to keeping your mind busy, we have educational classes that teach you many things like how to live well, healthy cooking classes, and memory exercises to help you live your life in wellness. We also have programs and people that promote positive living, from encouragement classes to Bible classes and gratefulness classes. So don’t forget to put the “right keys” in the door for aging well. This month we have some great programs from a seminar called “Coffee & Caregiving” for caregivers in the “thick” of it. We also have 9x13 Day! And we will even celebrate National Cheeseburger Day and celebrate National Senior Center day with a 4-Center Bingo Game with great prizes at the Downtown Senior Ctr! And finally, to top it all off, we have Senior Expo on the 26th! Whew, now to inspire you, the following quotes: “When you are dissatisfied and think you would like to go back to youth, think of ALGEBRA” ~ Will Rogers. And remember this when exercising… “No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everyone on the couch,..” Grab your keys (& Compass newsletter) to AGE WELL. ~Cherise

Hello Everyone…Happy National Senior Center Month & Grandparents Day (September 8th)!!! National Senior Center Month is celebrated every year in September. This is an opportunity to showcase our centers and all the great programs, activities, and services that we offer. It is also a great time to promote a positive image of aging, and show how important the senior centers are in the community. The 2019 theme is: “Senior Centers: The Key to Aging Well!” The National Council on Aging shares this can be done through Growing, Learning, Connecting and Giving. This month we have a lot of great social activities planned; which fits The Key to Aging Well perfectly. I think one key to aging well is Socialization. Did you know that ongoing social interaction helps keep seniors mentally, physically, and emotionally fit? It reduces stress, increases lifespan, and reduces the risk of depression caused by isolation and loneliness. Being social also reduces levels of anxiety, and it helps seniors maintain their self-esteem and sense of worth. Source: (www.actsretirement.org). The social activities that are going on this month are: Heartland Games – Heartland 5K Run/Walk (Sept. 8th), 4 Center Bingo (Sept. 19th), Casino Trip (Sept. 20th), and Senior Expo (Sept. 26th)…Hope to see you out being social this month…as always, Be Encouraged!!! Carnesha Tucker, Center Director

Orchard Park Senior CenterGreetings Everyone!!! September is National Senior Center Month, the theme for 2019 is Senior Centers: The Key to Aging Well! I would like to share some information about Aging Well. Coping with change is difficult, no matter how old you are. The particular challenge for older adults is the sheer number of changes and transitions that start to occur—including children moving away, the loss of parents, friends, and other loved ones, changes to or the end of your career, declining health and even loss of independence. It’s natural to feel those losses. But if the sense of loss is balanced with positive ingredients, you have a formula for staying healthy as you age. Healthy aging means continually reinventing yourself as you pass through landmark ages such as 60, 70, 80 and beyond. It means finding new things you enjoy, learning to adapt to change, staying physically and socially active, and feeling connected to your community and loved ones. Unfortunately, for many of us, aging brings anxiety and fear. How will I take care of myself late in life? What if I lose my spouse? What is going to happen to my mind? However, many of these fears often stem from popular misconceptions about aging. The truth is that you are stronger and more resilient than you may realize. These tips can help you maintain your physical and emotional health, whatever your age or circumstances. Myths about healthy aging:

• Aging means declining health and/or disability. Fact: There are some diseases that become more common as we age. However, getting older does not automatically mean poor health.

Orchard Park Senior CenterDirector’s Notes (Continued)

• Memory loss is an inevitable part of aging. Fact: As you age, you may eventually notice you don’t remember things as easily as in the past, or memories may start to take a little longer to retrieve. However, significant memory loss is not an inevitable result of aging.• You can’t teach an old dog new tricksFact: One of the more damaging myths of aging is that after a certain age, you just won’t be able to try anything new or contribute to things anymore. The opposite is true. Middle aged and older adults are just as capable of learning new things and thriving in new environments, plus they have the wisdom that comes with life experience.

Aging well tip 1: Learn to cope with change. As you age, there will be periods of joy and stress. It’s important to build your resilience and find healthy ways to cope with challenges.

• Focus on the things you’re grateful for. Acknowledge and express your feelings. Accept the things you can’t change. Look for the silver lining. Take daily action to deal with life’s challenges. Stay healthy through humor, laughter and play.

Tip 2: Find meaning and joy. A key ingredient in the recipe for healthy aging is the continuing ability to find meaning and joy in life. Later life can be a time of exciting new adventures if you let it.

• Pick up a long-neglected hobby. Learn something new. Get involved in your community. Travel somewhere new. Spend time in nature. Enjoy the arts. Write your memoirs

Tip 3: Stay connected. It is important to find ways to reach out and connect to others, regardless of whether or not you live with a spouse or partner. Along with regular exercise, staying social can have the most impact of your health as you age.

• Connect regularly with friends and family. Make an effort to make new friends. Spend time with at least one person every day. Volunteer. Find support groups in times of change

Tip 4: Keep your mind sharp. There are many good reasons for keeping your brain as active as your body. Exercising, keeping your brain active and maintaining creativity can actually help to prevent cognitive decline and memory problems.

• Try variations on what you know• Work something new in each day• Take on a completely new subject
