The gospel raises the question of who is first and who is last in the kingdom of heaven. Those laborers are last who shift from
doing the work of the landowner to grumbling about the amount of wages others are receiving. Those are first who do not labor in the vineyard because of the amount of wages, but simply because
they are privileged to share in the work of the landowner. Indeed, simply being called to the privileges of sharing in Jesus’
work of salvation is its own recompense. The kingdom of heaven is revealed by those who choose this work.

FMCHS PRESS RELEASE - GROUNDBREAKING SEPTEMBER 22 @ 1 PM
There is a familiar saying around Father McGivney Catholic High School that goes something like this, “It’s a great day to be a Griffin,” and it appears this saying continues to hold true. Just last week, the Father McGivney Board of Education officially voted to move forward with its $7.5 million project to construct a brand new, state-of-the-art facility on the property the Diocese of Springfield owns in Glen Carbon at the corner of Old Troy and Bouse Roads. “It’s really exciting, a feeling unlike any other, that we finally, after thousands of hours of hard work by hundreds of volunteers, staff members, and teachers, can say we are officially breaking ground on our new facility,” exclaimed Father McGivney Principal, Mike Scholz.
Father McGivney has been in a $5 million capital campaign for the new school since August of last year. Just this last week, the school officially crossed the $5 million mark in pledges, which has cleared the way for construction to take place beginning with a ceremonial groundbreaking and blessing on September 22. Along with the $5 million campaign, the school has received financing from First Clover Leaf Bank in Edwardsville, which has been a supporter of the new Catholic high school since its inception. “It’s a dream come true,” stated Father McGivney School Board President, Doug Villhard. “But I like to remind everyone that we've had a school now for 3 years. All we're doing here is expanding into a permanent facility. But we're doing so because a staggering 1,300 local families donated and they did so because they support both where we are today and where we're headed. Those supporters are what motivate us every day at McGivney."
The schedule of events for September 22 is slated to begin at 10am with a Mass for all Father McGivney students, its partner schools’ students & pastors, Board of Directors, and Founder’s Board at St. Boniface Church in Edwardsville. The ceremonial groundbreaking and blessing, lead by the Most Reverend Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, will begin at 1pm and is open to the general public. All supporters of Father McGivney are encouraged to join in this historic event. Attendees may park at the Maryville Baptist Church parking lot and take a shuttle provided by Father McGivney over to the dedication site.
“I am grateful for the spiritual generosity and profound faith that this community has displayed with regards to Father McGivney,” exclaimed Father Jeff Goeckner, Dean of the Alton Deanery and Father McGivney Board Member. “With this new facility, we will be able to accommodate more students in order to provide them with a well grounded Catholic education for generations to come in our location of the Alton Deanery in the Diocese of Springfield.” Father McGivney Catholic High School opened its doors in August 2012.
For the current academic year, Father McGivney has an enrollment of 88 students, with over 60 more expected to register for next year. The school is currently housed in its private wing at the St. John Neumann Catholic School campus on Wilma Drive in Maryville, but is scheduled to move in to its new facility for the fall semester of 2015. The school’s classrooms are equipped with 70-inch flat screen TVs to interface with the teacher’s computer and wireless Internet connection. Each student receives his or her own laptop to access textbooks and complete homework assignments, quizzes, and tests. The only hard cover book the students carry is the Holy Bible. To schedule a tour of the school or for more information on the groundbreaking ceremony, please contact the school office at 618-855-9010.

MINISTRY MINUTES FROM ROBIN BLACK-RUBENSTEIN
Sometimes September can seem like January, the beginning of a new year. Fall is the time when students and teachers return to school and other programs recreational, organizational, and community often begin again as well. Fall is also a time when many weekend activities are available, too. There is excitement in the air and the scents of fall begin to linger in nature and in our homes. Because we want to soak it all in, sometimes we get so busy that we miss the beauty of God’s seasonal gift. I think, too, that sometimes I miss the beauty and the gifts of each day because I may be focused on the next day’s commitments. One way that we can focus on the current day before jumping into the next is through the Examen prayer. This form of prayer helps you to go over your day. If you are worried about falling asleep, do this before you lie down or another time before you go to bed: invite God’s light in as you remember when you felt close to God, and when you might have pulled away; which actions made you feel regret or uncomfortable inside; and at the end, a promise to do better with God’s grace. Here are six simple steps for the daily Examen prayer from the Paulist web site “Busted Halo”:
Find a quiet place- Go to a place where your phone, the internet, television, family, or work won’t bother you. If you have time, you may even think about a quiet spot by a lake, on your porch or patio or a quiet serene room in your house to help you center yourself in prayer. Your posture should be comfortable, but attentive. You’re about to try to pay more careful attention to the events of your daily life, so don’t curl up and go to sleep yet.
Identify a moment of gratitude- Can you name one moment that you are grateful for today? Remember how you felt in that moment. Notice those feelings and simply be grateful for them knowing that all gifts come from God.
Ask for Freedom – Freedom is one of the main components of Catholic spirituality. We long for freedom from the things that often trip us up, distract us, or bias our judgment. We pray that the Holy Spirit gives us vision to be free of those things, so we can see the events of our life as they are – not how we’d like things to be or even how we experience them to be complete with our own prejudices.
Review your day – Try to recall the events of the past day as if you were watching a movie. What happened when you woke up, ate lunch, or traveled home from school or work? Who did you encounter? Notice your feelings- positive or negative- throughout the day and reflect on the moments that are significant to you. These are the events that God is trying to tell you more about- examine these significance moments more deeply.
Talk with God- Tell God anything that is on your mind. You might express gratitude for something that you were consoled by. You might look for God’s assistance for a particular trouble. Whatever the case, this is your time to be with God, who already knows your needs. Our prayer exists to change us, not to change God. This is our moment to be proactive in seeing who God most wants us to be.
Finish your prayer – End your time of prayer with The Lord’s Prayer or a similar prayer that you like.
TIPS: Start by doing this for 10-15 minutes. Only increase when you feel the need, don’t force time. Jot down any moments of consolation, etc. Don’t stress over details, “Am I doing this right?” “Did I forget?” God is not judging your form. Just Pray.
DEACON DAN’S COLUMN
Who Stands Up to Protect our Right of Religious Freedom?
“Use or lose it” may not seem like a maxim to be applied to the rights we have as American citizens, but in resisting the current mandates by the federal department of Health and Human Services that all employers provide insurance coverage for contraceptives and abortifacients, “use or lose it” is an exact description of what must be done in order to protect our right of religious freedom. We live in a time when there is a disturbing trend in both federal and state-level infringements on religious freedom and individual conscience rights. So many of us have been raised to see our religion as a personal matter and a personal relationship between ourselves and our God. We do not easily express our religious beliefs in the public square and taking that first step to defend religious freedom, a right we should not have to be defending, is a courageous act of commitment.
The September issue of Columbia, the Knights of Columbus monthly magazine, contains an article that profiles three persons who were courageous enough to challenge infringements on their right to religious freedom. One of those profiled is the father of a parishioner. Cyril “Pete” Korte is the father of Gregg Korte. Pete is the president of Korte and Luitjohan Contractors. Pete recognized that the HHS mandate would require that he violate the tenets of his Catholic faith and so he sought judicial intervention. His case is the first appellate court decision that says the individual owner and the company they own each has separate rights. This case was decided before the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby case and helped set precedent for deciding that case.
Korte believes that his case and others like it will serve as a call to action for others to exercise their own rights. He says “the worst evil, in any day and age, in any place, is to stand by and do nothing in the face of injustice or poor judgment….My hope is that all good citizens and small business owners, especially Christians, stand up for truth and our rights.” All of us must be both vigilant and vigorous in defending our right to practice our religion and to act in concert with what our Church teaches.
Let us offer a prayer of thanks for the courage displayed by Cyril “Pete” Korte and let us ask for the grace to also act courageously to defend our Catholic way of life. ~Deacon Dan

Contribution Envelopes
Over the past few weeks, I have gotten several questions about the different envelopes that are in the packet the parishioners receive in the mail, or that are listed on our electronic giving page. To address those questions, I thought it would be easier to put a listing with a brief explanation for the different giving opportunities. Listed below are the envelopes, with their corresponding color, frequency and what the contributions are utilized for:
Weekly offering envelopes -These envelopes are dated on Sunday, and the funds are used for the operating costs of the church such as utilities, supplies, payroll and repairs/maintenance.
Building debt -These envelopes are blue and are given out on the 1st Sunday of the month. All funds received are sent into the Diocese to be applied against the principal on our debt.
St Vincent de Paul -These envelopes are usually the last Sunday of the month and a picture of St. Vincent de Paul is on the back of the envelope. The funds go directly to the St. Vincent de Paul Society to be utilized in their program for the poor and needy.
Angel Fund -These envelopes are yellow and are on the 2nd Sunday of the month. The funds go toward tuition assistance for children at St. Boniface School.
Father McGivney Catholic High School -These envelopes are green and are given out monthly. The funds are used for tuition assistance for Father McGivney Catholic High School for St. Boniface Parish students only. These are students that attend St. Boniface Church; but do not have to be St. Boniface Catholic School students. These envelopes are not for the pledges to Father McGivney capital campaign.
CCIF -These envelopes are white with a blue border, given out quarterly. The funds are used for central capital improvements to our church and campus.
ACSA -These envelopes are gold and are given out at the beginning of the calendar year. These funds are for the Annual Catholic Services Appeal.
Throughout the year, there are also a variety of envelopes for Diocesan 2nd collections such as Catholic Children’s Home, or Catholic Home Missions to name a few. These funds go directly to the Diocese to be dispersed to the correct agency.

Knights of Columbus
The Edwardsville Knights of Columbus is hosting its 2nd annual Family Day on Sunday, October 5, from 12:00-4:00 p.m. at the Edwardsville KofC Hall on 7132 Marine Rd. in Edwardsville. It is open to all Catholic families of both St. Mary and St. Boniface. There will be lots of old fashioned kids games like 3-legged race, egg in spoon race, football and softball toss, soccer goal kick, longest drive with frozen marshmallow, etc. There will be a kids menu of $1 Hamburgers-2/$1 Hot Dogs, and our famous KofC BBQ menu for the adults. Please come join us and celebrate all our families with fun, food, prizes, and friendship. Contact Scott Bayless ([email protected]) for more information.
Life Chain 2014—Sunday, October 5, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Join with more than 1500 cities in the US and Canada for one hour to provide peaceful, prayerful witness to counter the despair of abortion with the hope and healing found in Christ. We will meet in front of our church rain or shine. Bring your whole family. Water, lawn chairs, umbrellas and strollers are welcome. Life Chain is the largest public witness of pro-life Americans standing for one hour praying for our nation and for an end to abortion. It is a visual statement of solidarity in the Christian community that abortion kills children and hurts women, and that the Church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception.
