Marriage We had a clergy study day not too long ago. The theme was marriage. There were two presentations. One was on the annulment process, the other was on the changes in the wedding rite.

As one may recall, it was Pope Francis’s wish to have the annulment process streamlined. Annulments took forever to be processed and tried. The tribunals were overloaded with cases and the backlog of cases slowed down the process. What has helped move things along in this archdiocese was the elimination of the automatic appeal. The automatic appeal would be sent to another diocese to uphold the decision or send it to Rome for a final verdict. The Archdiocese’s tribunal handles the appeals from all the dioceses in the province, which are all the dioceses in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. They would have hundreds of appeals each year to look at. But this year because of the change, the Archdiocese has had only five.

In a canonical trial, like any civil trial, you would have two advocates and a judge. One advocate presents the case for the petitioner asking for the annulment, This advocate makes the argument on why an annulment should be granted, presenting testimony from the petitioner (the spouse asking for the annulment), the petitioner’s witnesses, and the respondent (the other spouse). The other advocate is what is known “the Defender of the Bond.” The defender of the bond argues the case that the sacrament was indeed valid, therefore an annulment must be denied. Based on the evidence presented, the judge makes the decision. Before last year, if the decision is to grant the annulment, the automatic appeal would take place. If the decision was to deny the annulment, the petitioner can ask for an appeal, but would probably be better served to find and present newer and better evidence and refile. With the change, even if the decision is to grant the annulment, there still may be an appeal, but it is not automatic. If the defender of the bond is convinced that the annulment should not have been granted, he could choose to make an appeal. But, as evidence of the number of appeals the Archdiocese has received this last year, the

times the defender of the bond appeals are few and far between.

The two pieces of advice that they gave us to help speed up the process: when filing, make sure all that they are asking for is there. An incomplete file slows things down. The other advice is to check in from time to time to see where the case is at. Being engaged in the process helps motivate the personnel at the tribunal to keep it moving in a timely matter.—TB

Stewards Among Us

Rosemary Pirrung

Rosemary has been a life time member at St. Pius V, living in the surrounding area all her life. She comes from a family of 8 siblings, with longevity proving to come true with 3 of them in their 90’s.

Since retirement, Rosemary decided to dedicate her life to helping others through the church and throughout the community and “there is no better feeling”. She stays involved at church by being a part of the prayer group, sacristan, funeral work, church cleaning and takes time to bring communion to the home bound. Through these ministries she has “enjoyed working and getting to know the parish members better and have grown more in my faith and have become closer with the Lord.”

“It’s a very fulfilling job and whatever you can do to make someone happy or do something for them, it is very rewarding. In a small town, there is always some organization that needs help such as Meals on Wheels, drivers for medical appointments or the Food Shelf.” This weekend St. Pius is collecting donations for the food shelf. When asked to volunteer, Rosemary offers this advice “volunteer just once and they have your name, then the choice is yours”.

I would like to think that most people in the world would help someone who was suffering if they had the chance. I guess my optimism starts to take a hit when I consider that in some cases the cost will be higher for that help than in others. To help someone with a meal or transport someone to a doctor is one thing. To offer oneself completely, all of one's money or time, is quite another. Of course, there have been famous examples of this type of giving. The recently canonized St. Teresa of Kolkata comes to mind. But I personally know of others who have given everything for another. Friends who have adopted an older child, gone to live as missionaries in a far off land, or added on to their house in order to care for an aging parent are all examples to me of those who answer the call without counting the cost. I am not concerned with not being able to follow the examples of these stewardship heroes. What concerns me is becoming too comfortable and not noticing the Lazarus that may be in my midst. Living a life of Everyday Stewardship means not only answering the call when it is obvious and when we have the chance to truly do something amazing, but also when it is less obvious and the need not as easily noticeable. Who doesn't want to help the starving child they see on a late night infomercial? But the sad reality is that sometimes there are children lying at our proverbial door that fail to gain our attention. So, I pray to see with the eyes of Jesus. I ask that I may be ever more mindful of those in need who cross my path. I pray to see Jesus in them. I pray to be Jesus to them. I pray that I may answer the call.
