News and Notes from Grace & Wesley September 26, 2019 To be consecrated means to be dedicated to a sacred purpose. Throughout Scripture we find exam- ples of God consecrating ordinary individuals for sacred duties: Samuel, Elijah, David, and so on. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we too have been consecrated by God. Our sacred purpose is to continue allowing Jesus to build his kingdom in and through us as Grace and Wesley United Methodist Churches. Jesus described the Kingdom of God as both the present and future work of the Spirit of God in and through his disciples. It is a kingdom in which the Spirit of God empowers Christ’s faithful witnesses to share, promote, and live out Christ’s Good News of salvation, peace, and love. On Consecration Sunday we will cele- brate the fact that Christ has entrusted this sacred purpose to us! The time, service, and money we pour into our respective churches are an investment in the Kingdom of God. We invest our time and talents in the church in order to exercise the very gifts God has planted within us, thus strengthening and building the Body of Christ. We invest our energy in service to the Church in order to reach out in compassion and love to one another as well as to those outside the walls of Grace and Wesley. We invest our money in the Church in order to faithfully return to God what God has entrusted to us, thus demon- strating our faithfulness and enabling the ministries of the Church to thrive. As you consider the investment you are willing to make in the Kingdom of God through Grace and Wes- ley in the coming year, I would like you to consider our sermon series on the covenants found in scripture. In each of the covenants (Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus), God makes promises to His people. The story of Scripture demonstrates how God is always faithful to keep the covenant promises he makes to his people. The story of scripture also demonstrates that we are expected to faithfully keep these covenants as well. Thankfully, through the covenant of Jesus, we are offered grace when we fail to keep covenant with God; how- ever, our growth as Christians depends on our willingness to keep growing in our covenant faithfulness. I be- lieve God is challenging each and every one of us to keep up our end of the covenant when it comes to support- ing Christ’s church with our prayer, service, witness, and financial resources. God expects this from all of us. Are you willing to commit to this kind of covenant faithfulness this year? My hope is that we will all prayerfully consider how Christ is challenging each one of us to keep covenant with our faithful God in regards to the monetary investment we are prepared to make in the Church this year. I pray that we, as a church, will experience the Kingdom of God in new, exciting, life giving ways in the coming year as we live out the purposes for which God created us! I also hope you will join us for Consecration Sunday on October 20 th . We will place on the altar the finan- cial commitments each of us are willing to make in the coming year and will celebrate our consecration with a meal following the service. 2019

News and Notes from Grace & Wesley September 26, 2019

To be consecrated means to be dedicated to a sacred purpose. Throughout Scripture we find exam-

ples of God consecrating ordinary individuals for sacred duties: Samuel, Elijah, David, and so on. As disciples of

Jesus Christ, we too have been consecrated by God. Our sacred purpose is to continue allowing Jesus to build

his kingdom in and through us as Grace and Wesley United Methodist Churches.

Jesus described the Kingdom of God as both the present and future work of the Spirit of God in and

through his disciples. It is a kingdom in which the Spirit of God empowers Christ’s faithful witnesses to share,

promote, and live out Christ’s Good News of salvation, peace, and love. On Consecration Sunday we will cele-

brate the fact that Christ has entrusted this sacred purpose to us!

The time, service, and money we pour into our respective churches are an investment in the Kingdom of

God. We invest our time and talents in the church in order to exercise the very gifts God has planted within us,

thus strengthening and building the Body of Christ. We invest our energy in service to the Church in order to

reach out in compassion and love to one another as well as to those outside the walls of Grace and Wesley. We

invest our money in the Church in order to faithfully return to God what God has entrusted to us, thus demon-

strating our faithfulness and enabling the ministries of the Church to thrive.

As you consider the investment you are willing to make in the Kingdom of God through Grace and Wes-

ley in the coming year, I would like you to consider our sermon series on the covenants found in scripture. In

each of the covenants (Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus), God makes promises to His people.

The story of Scripture demonstrates how God is always faithful to keep the covenant promises he makes to his

people.

The story of scripture also demonstrates that we are expected to faithfully keep these covenants as well.

Thankfully, through the covenant of Jesus, we are offered grace when we fail to keep covenant with God; how-

ever, our growth as Christians depends on our willingness to keep growing in our covenant faithfulness. I be-

lieve God is challenging each and every one of us to keep up our end of the covenant when it comes to support-

ing Christ’s church with our prayer, service, witness, and financial resources. God expects this from all of us.

Are you willing to commit to this kind of covenant faithfulness this year? My hope is that we will all

prayerfully consider how Christ is challenging each one of us to keep covenant with our faithful God in regards

to the monetary investment we are prepared to make in the Church this year. I pray that we, as a church, will

experience the Kingdom of God in new, exciting, life giving ways in the coming year as we live out the purposes

for which God created us!

I also hope you will join us for Consecration Sunday on October 20th. We will place on the altar the finan-

cial commitments each of us are willing to make in the coming year and will celebrate our consecration with a

meal following the service.

In the Hospital?

Please be sure to let the church office know if you or a loved one is in the hospital. Pastors and church-es don’t have the access to the patient lists that they used to and for some reason there are times

when patients don’t show up on the list.

Bottom line: If you or a loved one is admitted to the hospital and would like a visit from the pastor,

call the church (641-423-6549). Thanks!

Kindness Project

Lincoln School is in desperate need

of shoes for the children. They are

getting requests from students

whose shoes are broken or too

small or too big.

Smaller sizes are needed, like youth

sizes 4, 5, 6 and maybe some adult

5, 6 or 7’s. The greatest need is for boy’s shoes, but

they will happily take anything.

(If you have smaller sizes, Roosevelt is always in need

of shoes and winter boots as well (especially boys or

gender neutral.)

The 40th Annual Mission Ingathering will be held across Iowa on Saturday, November 2. The Purpose of Mission Ingathering is to show the love of Christ to the world's people by ministering to their needs. The kits will be sent to Midwest Mission for distribution in

response to requests within and beyond the United States for humanitarian and disaster relief.

A display of kits is in the church library with a list of items to be included in each kit. You do not need to bring a complete kit but may

purchase any of the items needed for the kits which will then be assembled at the Church.

Here’s what is still needed:

HYGIENE KITS help disaster victims reclaim their dignity and self-respect. They include:

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School has started! So far we have had a

great showing of kids – thank you parents!

Times for Sunday School is from 9:30am-10:30am.

The kids are picked up after Time with Chippy.

We are going to try a new curriculum this year. It is

what is called a “rotation series”. This will allow our

older ones to stay with our younger ones but will

continue to challenge them.

How does it work? There is one subject we will fo-

cus on for seven weeks. Each week we will focus

on the subject using a different media. The seven

stations are cooking, games, missions, science,

spiritual practices, storytelling/drama and art. Hav-

ing seven weeks with different medias will give us a

chance to dig into a certain subject for longer than

an hour.

Do you have an interest in any of these stations?

Maybe you would like to spend a Sunday volunteer-

ing? Please let me know if you would like to volun-

teer. Either email me at [email protected]

or call the office and let Patty know.

A couple of wish list items: juice, snacks, (food

items for 15 students), watercolor paints

Thank you! Shannon
