GATHERING

TRINITY CHIMES

BRINGING IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

PRELUDE “Prelude” J.S. Bach

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

INTROIT Susan Brooks, vocalist

* GREETING (8:45) Lynda Boone, lay reader

(11:00) Ken Waters, lay reader

Bless the Lord, O my soul!

Let all that is within me, bless God’s holy name!

* OPENING HYMN “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” UMH 526

What a friend we have in Jesus,

all our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear,

all because we do not carry

everything to God in prayer.

Page 2: September 26, 2021 | Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged;

take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful

who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness;

take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,

cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge;

take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?

Take it to the Lord in prayer!

In his arms he’ll take and shield thee;

thou wilt find a solace there.

* OPENING PRAYER

O God, who made heaven and earth, you redeem our life and crown us with steadfast love

and mercy. Renew us this day. Open our hearts to your healing work in and through us for

the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

* CLOSING HYMN “He Leadeth Me: O Blessed Thought” (verses 1, 4) UMH 128

He leadeth me: O blessed thought!

O words with heavenly comfort fraught!

Whate’er I do, where’er I be,

still ‘tis God's hand that leadeth me.

Refrain:

He leadeth me, he leadeth me,

by his own hand he leadeth me;

his faithful follower I would be,

for by his hand he leadeth me.

And when my task on earth is done,

when by thy grace the victory's won,

E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,

since God through Jordan leadeth me. [repeat refrain]

GIVE THE GIFT OF ALTAR FLOWERS Now that we are back offering in-person services, it is much easier to share altar

flowers not only with those attending service (both online and in the sanctuary)

by their placement on the altar, but with our Benson Memorial family who might

need their day brightened by the delivery of a flower bouquet. When you place

flowers on the altar and choose to share them, you have the option to share them

as a whole arrangement or split into smaller arrangements to be shared with

individuals to let them know they are in our prayers.

Recently, the arrangement in memory of Kay Ellis was given to Hillcrest

Convalescent Center for use in one of their common areas. On Sunday, August 22,

Cam and Chris Frazier’s flowers were split into three smaller arrangements and

shared with three Benson Memorial family members.

You can sign up to provide alar flowers by using the calendar request form on

our website (www.bensonmemorial.org/home/forms/) or by calling the church office at (919) 787-0789 if you are unable to

use the online form. Once you have signed up on the calendar to provide flowers, you will receive a call from Louise Humphrey

to assist with the order and to find out what you want to do with the flowers after worship services.

Thank you! —Ginny Wise

PRAYER SHAWL BLESSING The prayer shawls displayed on the altar were blessed during last Sunday's

services by Pastor Jeff saying a prayer over them as the congregation lifted their

hands toward the altar. Benson Memorial UMC members can now select a shawl

to give to a family member, a friend, or a person who may need the comfort of

God's peace, healing and grace enfolding them.

The Benson Memorial Prayer Shawl Ministry welcomes all who would like to join

us in knitting, crocheting, or quilting these comforting wraps. If interested, please

contact Pam Williford at [email protected] or (919) 846-3469.

In Pastor Jeff’s new video, he talks

about the contradictions in the Bible

and how they’re not only nothing

we should be afraid of, but they’re

actually a good thing! Be sure to

check it out and come back for a

new video every Tuesday morning.

YouTube channel today!

SEASON OF CREATION

WEBINAR SERIES

A series of free webinars will be

held throughout the month. The

webinars will cover a wide range of

topics, including: the connections

between environmental, racial and

food justice; spirituality and healing

in creation; how churches can be

involved in regenerative

agriculture; connecting faith and

science in ministry; and Bible studies.

A full list of webinars with

registration links can be found here:

nccumc.org/creation/events/.

All webinars are offered free of

charge, and will be held via Zoom.

ReGenesis2.15: Tools for

Regenerating the Soil and

the Soul of Your Community

Living as Resident Aliens

in God’s Land

September 30, 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Ellen Davis (Duke Divinity

School) and Rev. Jarrod S. Davis

guide a study on Leviticus 25,

seeking to understand the

importance of Sabbath and Jubilee

for the land and the community

alike. How have our understandings

of land ownership, indebtedness,

and slavery shaped our modern

world? Click here to register.

Climate Change: Where Religion

and Science Meet

October 5, 7:00

Climate change is a religious issue as

well as a scientific one because some

of its effects, for which we bear re-

sponsibility, are contrary to reli-

gious teachings. The presentation

will review three of those effects

relevant to biblical teachings, clarify

the severity of the issue, and identify

actions for both congregations and

congregants to mitigate climate

change. Click here to register.

GROCERY GIFT CARDS Grocery Gift Cards for Lowe’s Foods

and Food Lion are still being offered

by the Susanna Wesley Circle.

They are an easy way to support the

fundraising of the Circle without

costing you a dime. You write a

check for the face value of the cards

purchased, and the Circle receives

five percent of the value of cards

sold. The cards are easier to use

than checks at the grocery store,

and they make great presents for

college students or as a thank you.

Cards are available in denominations

of $25, $50, and $100.

To purchase cards, contact Ginny

Wise by phone or text at (819) 608-

9204), or catch her after church.
