Dear Parishioners, As we see in the first reading from Jeremiah 20: 7-9, human struggle is not new. This section in chapter 20 of Jeremiah is called “Jeremiah’s Interior Crisis.” It shows the rawness and reality of the struggles we face. Sometimes we may wonder why the Lord allows us to go through such struggles, or even why we have to endure tragedies like Hurricane Harvey. However, such occasions are opportunities for us to turn to the Lord and draw ever closer to Him, and out of this, He sends us out to do His work. It is in these times that we learn to rely on God as Jeremiah does later on in verse 11 when he goes on to say “but the Lord is with me, like a mighty champion.” It is a time of transformation from grief into trust in and

reliance on the Lord that calls us out of ourselves to then unite with Him and be life giving to those in need, drawing us together as one body in Christ. The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey gives us such an opportunity. There has been much devastation beyond belief. It is truly heartbreaking. Yet, this is where the Lord calls us to Him, to in turn react to our brothers and sisters in need showing them the life giving love of Christ through our actions. It has been extremely encouraging to see how people have responded to this disaster. May we here at St. Stephen’s continue to reach out to those in need, first and foremost through our prayers, but also via whatever way each of us is able to help. Here are some options:

• St. Stephen’s Second Collection this weekend at each Mass. • Catholic Charities as outlined in the insert. Mark the donation for “Hurricane Harvey Relief.” One

can also donate specifically to Catholic Charities Houston (catholiccharities.org/donate-now-and-help-our-neighbors-recover-from-disaster or call 713-874-6654), Catholic Charities Corpus Christi (www.catholiccharities-cc.org/donate-to-catholic-charities or call 361-884-0651), or Catholic Charities of Beaumont.

• The Diocese of Victoria has their own direct way to give through www.victoriadiocese.org/donate-hurricane-relief.

• Also, I (Fr. Timothy) am sending gift cards to a good friend in Houston who is delivering them to families in need. You can bring the gift cards by the church office.

• You can also reach out to individual parishes in those areas affected. Many of their websites have information with ways to help.

• If you would like to physically volunteer, please call me (Fr. Timothy) at the office. I have gathered some options and made some contacts that are helping direct such efforts.

Most of all, please join in praying for families that are seeking shelter, people who are searching for loved ones, emergency workers who are serving tirelessly, and survivors who are trying to find hope for the future. May we use this opportunity to turn to God and unite with those affected by Hurricane Harvey by lifting them up to Christ our Lord who indeed is our “Mighty Champion.”

In Christ,

Fr. Timothy Hayter

St. Stephen’s will be having a Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration this Thursday after the 7:00pm Mass,

"RCIA" stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It's the process by which adults come into full communion with the Catholic Church by receiving their Sacraments of Initiation. It's free, childcare is provided, we have a lot of fun and we always have something good to eat.

In RCIA, we will have a lot of fun (and eat a lot) as we study 43 in-depth lessons on our faith and learn about 45 Saints. RCIA is a wonderful journey of faith and we welcome you to join us!

You may register for RCIA by sending an email to me at [email protected] or by filling out a sign-up form in the Church narthex.

If you have received your first communion and feel a calling to join our altar server community we invite you to come to the training. Parents, we encourage you to attend as well.

Deacon Lorenzo Salazar will be offering this training for both English and Spanish servers. This is a must for all servers – whether you are new or experienced. Training is ongoing and required for all servers. We will have pizza after the training.

DOMINGO 22° TIEMPO ORDINARIO CICLO “A”

Hermana Gertrudis Muñoz Mendieta I.C.A.S.

Thank you St. Stephen’s Knights of Columbus Council 12657! Our pickup truck that we use to haul unusable items to the landfill was recently vandalized to the point where it will not be drivable until extensive repairs can be made. Obviously our work cannot stop while we wait on re-pairs and piles of furniture and other items were accumulating rapidly in our yard. We called on the Knights and they responded that very weekend, making many, many trips to the landfill using their own trucks to haul our trailers. What a blessing they were (and always are!). Thank you again, guys, for bailing us out in our time of need. You are angels!!!

Out September Sale… This month we will be selling VHS tapes at the incredible price of 20 for $1! Cassettes are also on sale 10 for $1. You might even invest in VCR players that we usually have in stock and set up a little system in your child’s room. We have many Disney movies.
