the Message of The Joy of Love FROM THE HOLY FATHER, FRANCIS

254. I can understand the anguish felt by those who have lost a much-loved person, a spouse with whom they have shared so much. Jesus himself was deeply moved and began to weep at the death of a friend (cf. Jn 11:33, 35). And how can we even be-gin to understand the grief of parents who have lost a child? “It is as if time stops altogether: a chasm opens to engulf both past and future”, and “at times we even go so far as to lay the blame on God. How many people – I can understand them – get angry with God” Losing one’s spouse is incredibly difficult… Ordinarily, the grieving process takes a fair amount of time. The entire process is filled with questions: about the reasons why the loved one had to die, about all the things that might have been done, about what a person experiences at the moment of death. At particular times, we have to help the grieving person to realize that, after the loss of a loved one, we still have a mission to carry out, and that it does us no good to prolong the suffering, as if it were a form of tribute. Our loved ones have no need of our suffering, nor does it flatter them that we should ruin our lives. They can no longer be physically present to us, yet for all death’s power, “love is strong as death” (Song 8:6). Love involves an intui-tion that can enable us to hear without sounds and to see the unseen. This does not mean imagining our loved ones as they were, but being able to accept them changed as they now are. The risen Jesus, when his friend Mary tried to embrace him, told her not to hold on to him, in order to lead her to a different kind of encounter. With Christ, after death, there awaits us “what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9). (continued next Sunday)

Studying the Catholic Faith and or joining the Church: This process is for all Adults (17+) and families who want to study the Catholic faith and are open to God’s invitation to full membership in the Church, and for those who are returning to the Church. The first sessions are make up what is called the Stage of Inquiry. St. Vincent de Paul Winter Drive This year during the month of September we will be collecting winter hats, gloves and blankets to share with those in need. Please bring your goods on any Sunday of the month and place them in the Shopping Cart or the bins marked St. Vincent de Paul. On Sunday, September 25 we will have Mass and a Reception. The guest celebrant will be Fr. Dennis Holtschneier, president of DePaul Univ.

INVITED

The Good News is that we have all been invited—invited to the Kingdom, invited to be disciples. It’s a life-changing invitation, and like so many other such invita-tions, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discern-ment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and con-sideration that accompany these profound decisions.

Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and acceptance of God’s will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing decisions.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Who can ever know God’s counsel unless God gives wisdom and sends the Holy Spirit from on high? (Wisdom 9:13-18b). Psalm — In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge (Psalm 90). Second Reading — Paul asks Philemon to accept back his slave Onesimus, not as a slave but as a brother (Philemon 9-10, 12-17). Gospel — To be a disciple of Jesus one must carry one’s own cross and renounce all possessions (Luke 14:25-33).
