BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAYis on Sunday the 26th September 2010.

It is an international invitation to invite everybody back into church.Rev’d Stephen would like to extend this invitation for you to worship with us anySunday. The whole congregation would like to welcome you back. You may nothave visited for sometime, or indeed this could be your first time. God has a wayof reaching out to a heart that is searching.

Sometimes as we grow up we need reminding that God’s hand is there tolead us along the right path, if we call on him. Come and experience the truth ofthe Gospel and share the love of God. Jesus is Lord, today, tomorrow and forever.

God is waiting for us to praise and worship Him together.Join us in fellowship and see what possibilities are available.

TREE SPARROWSHave you seen this bird??

Tree Sparrows, once familiar birds over much of the country, declined by 93% between 1970 and 2007. Fortunately they are now makinga bit of a comeback and a pair bred successfully somewhere in Cotherstonethis spring, probably for the first time in many years.

Tree Sparrows are like male House Sparrows but lack the grey onthe crown, making the top of their heads all chestnut brown. They lookrather smarter and sleeker than most House Sparrows and have a blackpatch on the side of the neck.

I am very interested to know if anyone has seen any of these birds attheir bird tables, either this summer or during the past winter. If you have, please ring me on 01833 650 730. Ian Moorhouse

NUMBER PUZZLES

Answer to last month's Puzzle:

If you cut out the pieces very carefully you will see that they do notfit together perfectly, leaving a narrow strip (shaded black in theillustration). The area of this strip is exactly one small square.

NUMBER PUZZLES (27) (Answers in next month's Magazine)

For the children (aged 7 to 11)1. How many stamps, each measuring 2 cm by 3 cm, can you stick on arectangle 7 cm by 9 cm, if they don't overlap?2. You buy a chocolate bar costing 11 p. You give the correct payment, using four coins. What coins were these?

For students (aged 12 to 16)3. How many stamps, each measuring 2 cm by 3 cm, can you stick on arectangle 11 cm by 13 cm, without overlapping?4. What is the smallest number of British coins you can have to enable youto make exact payment for any one article costing anything from 1p to 60p?

For the adults (aged 17 upwards)5. Forty students took exams in Maths, English and Science. Seven passedin M and E, three passed in E and S, six passed in S and M. Two passed inall three but six failed them all. How many passed in only one subject?6. What is the largest sum of money you can have, in British coins, and yetbe unable to make exact payment for an article costing £2.00 ?

MATHS IS FUN!

I do hope that every reader of the Parish Magazine with school-agechildren (or grandchildren) encourages them to tackle the Number Puzzlesevery month (see p.10). Why not sit down with your youngsters and seewhich of you can solve the monthly puzzles the fastest? And don't forget tolook for the correct answers in the following month's edition!

It is sad that so many people find Maths difficult, or even dull, for atthe school level it need be neither. The reason is not hard to find, however. The Mathematics syllabus, unlike that for most other subjects, is strictlycumulative, with the skills acquired at each stage being vitally necessary forunderstanding all later stages. So if your youngsters begin to fall behind it isessential that parents and teachers take action immediately to find outexactly what is not understood, and to give some extra tuition and practicebefore it is too late. Otherwise students will inevitably becomedisheartened, and much of the later work will be incomprehensible to them.

The country is desperately short of Mathematicians. ManyMathematics teachers in our schools have not themselves specialised inMaths. Even first class teachers must find it difficult to impart a real love forthe subject if they themselves are not comfortable with it. So for theforeseeable future anyone leaving university with a suitable degree shouldhave no difficulty finding employment in the teaching world. The problemis self-perpetuating, for it is unlikely that pupils who have not been taughtby enthusiastic Maths teachers will themselves enter the profession. But thecareer opportunities for a good Mathematician are much wider than this. All branches of Science and of Engineering are now heavily dependent onMathematics, and anyone hoping for secure and rewarding employment inany of these fields must acquire a good level of competence in Maths. Sosound progress here in both the Primary and Secondary School has neverbeen more necessary. As we try to pull ourselves out of the current economic recessionour industries will be demanding high quality Scientists and Engineers. Forreasons which are not at all clear, but probably have something to do withyouth culture and motivation, the school pupils in such far eastern countriesas China, Japan and Malaysia seem much more at home in the world ofMathematics than our own young people. Unless we can reverse this trend,it cannot fail to influence the forthcoming international race for industrialand economic supremacy.

COMPUTING NOTES (3)

CAR INSURANCE COSTSThe cost of car insurance continues to rise relentlessly. The AA

reports that premiums have increased by an avarage of 20% during the lasttwelve months, as most of us will discover when our premium is next duefor renewal.

The reason for this increase is not that there are more accidents, orthat repairs are much more expensive, but rather that some solicitors arepersuading drivers to claim not only for damage to their cars, but also forpersonal stress and inconvenience, for which they would not otherwise seekcompensation. Most motorists know that the premiums charged by differentcompanies differ widely, and that by "shopping around" they can savemoney, but the time and effort involved in doing this by telephone can beprohibitive. Much simpler is to use one of the internet's comparison sites, and I can recommend: www.moneysupermarket.com

On entering the site, click on Car Insurance, and then Get a NewQuote. You type in the car's Registration Number, and it immediatelyrecognises the vehicle. You then complete a simple form, which asks foryour own details and the exact type of cover you want for the car. Within afew minutes it presents you with a table giving quotations from about 50companies, arranged in order of increasing annual cost. For each quotationyou will see the premium, paid annually or monthly, the voluntary andcompulsory excess (i.e. the amount you will yourself pay towards the costof a claim), and details of the cover offered. If you decide to accept one ofthese offers, you click on Proceed, and can go ahead to arrange thefollowing year's insurance.

You will naturally want the new insurer to take over from yourpresent company on the day following the expiry of your present premium, and as the quotation is only valid for a maximum of 30 days, you should gothrough the above procedure during the month preceding its expiry. Youwill probably have received your old company's renewal notice a few weeksbefore it is due, and will be able to compare their premium for the followingyear with the best quotations from Money Supermarket.

I used this method for the first time a few years ago, and found aninsurer considerably cheaper than my previous supplier. It is wise to beaware that some disreputable firms give a particularly low quotation for thefirst year's cover, and then increase it vastly for the second year. But if yougo through the same procedure every year as soon as you receive thefollowing year's renewal notice, you can beat them at their own game, forthere is no disadvantage in changing one's supplier regularly. But I ampleased the firm I discovered two years ago seem not to adopt this practice, and remain near the top of the Money Supermarket list each year, so I amstaying with them. EDITOR

PRINCESS SALLY AND PRINCESS SELINAMother came to the door to see what all the noise was. "Goodness," said

Mother "What have we here?" "Miaow, miaow" said the Princesses. "I wonderwhere this pretty pussy cat has come from? I must ring the Cat & Dog Home nextdoor, my Princesses. We cannot just keep her. Someone else could be disappointedtonight, and you woundn't like that, would you?"

The Princesses looked at each other, not pleased with Mother's response. But she rang the Home next door, and they said they would send someone around tosee her. In a while there was a knock at the door, and one of the owners of the Cat& Dog Home came in. "Hello! What have we got here?" Mother gave him herversion of how the new pussy cat had arrived, and he said he would look into thesituation with his staff, and report back. "Phew!" said the Princesses, "We do hopeyou can stay, young kitten". Mother said "We shall just have to wait and see whatthe situation will be. In the meantime shall we all have some food and a drink?" asby this time all were hungry. The kitten was woken up, and had a saucer of milk, and a small portion of cat food. Then Mother fed the two Princesses, who weredelighted the kitten was still with them.

After the feed Princess Sally and Princess Selina gently coaxed the kittenout of the little basket Mother had found for her, and they just sat on the mat in frontof the fire, looking at the new lodger, and hoping the kitten would be able to stay.Mother looked at them, amd said "We don't know yet, my pets. We will just have towait for the young man to call again. Settle down to sleep." J. Scott
