Pastor’s Musings During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, “How do you determine whether or not a retiree should be put in an old folks home?” “Well,” he said, “we fill up a bathtub;

then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the retiree and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.” “Oh, I understand,” “A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No” he said. “A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?”

Message from the Pastor W elcome to St. Ambrose ! We are so glad you are able to join us

today to celebrate the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time. FEAR NOT: In these times, there is plenty to be afraid of, if we only look around. It seems that every day the news media have yet more bad news to tell: wars, disease, terrorism, drought, social unrest, and more. Some people have stopped using clock radios to wake up in the morn-ing, preferring a jarring buzzer to the even more jarring morning news. What more do we need before we realize that we are finite creatures, and while there is much we can do to make our world better, ultimately there is a lot that is simply not within our grasp? To this our loving God says, “Be strong, fear not!” We must do what we can to make our world a better and safer place, but we must also realize our limits and that our ultimate safety is in the hands of God. We can be comforted by the realization that God loves us beyond measure, and will give us every help in our efforts to make our world a loving and safe place for everyone. Have a wonderful week—Remember—the most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling; and even more beautiful is knowing that you are the reason behind it!

REFLECTIONS Our Second Reading today reminds us of our tendency to judge on appearances. To bring home this point, in 2013 a newly-appointed Methodist pastor from Tennessee spent four days living as a homeless man in the vicinity of his new church, neglecting to shave or to comb his hair, to see how many people would acknowledge his presence. He then presented himself to his congregation on the Sunday morning and preached a sermon as his daughter proceeded to shave his beard and comb his hair; finally, the pastor changed his shoes and removed his overcoat to reveal his Sunday clothes. His point was made. Salvador Ryan

JUDGMENT: To pass judgment on another is to usurp shamelessly a prerogative of God. —St. John Climacus

TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH:TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH:TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH: Daily renewal for busy Catholics

For everything there is a season. For many, this time of year, when summer ends and school begins, feels more like the beginning of a new year than January 1. In fact, Jews and Muslims celebrate their new years in late summer/early fall. But it’s Ordinary Time in the Catholic liturgical calendar, and as summer fun winds down and you get back to “ordinary” life, remember to take time to reflect and seek spiritual renewal with the chang-ing season. Cooler weather and shorter days are conducive to turning inward; cultivate light and warmth in your heart.

Do You Know the Works of Mercy????? The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are actions we can perform that extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. The Corporal Works of Mercy are these kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their material and physical needs. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are acts of compassion by which we help our neighbors with their emotional and spiritual needs.

The Corporal Works of Mercy To feed the hungry. To shelter the homeless. To clothe the naked. To visit the sick and imprisoned. To bury the dead. To give alms to the poor.

The Spiritual Works of Mercy To admonish sinners. To instruct the ignorant. To counsel the doubtful. To comfort the sorrowful. To bear wrongs patiently. To forgive all injuries. To pray for the living and the dead.

A Prayer for Hurricane Season O God, Master of this world,

hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned calm to the seas. We live in the shadow of danger over which we have no control. During this hurricane season, we

turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from all storms that may harm us or our loved ones.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved mother, we ask you to watch over and protect us until we walk in the footsteps of Your divine Son and reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a

storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen.

Galatians – Set Free to Live

Starts September 15th

Paul’s letter to the Galatians speaks directly to the heart of Christians and addresses the most important question we can ask: “What must we do to be saved?” It speaks of the extraordinary gift of salva-tion that Jesus has won for us, and how we can unite ourselves to Christ’s redeeming sacrifice.

In our eight-part Bible study Galatians: Set Free to Live by Jeff Cavins and Gayle Somers, learn what it means to have this filial relationship with God the Father, how He honors us as His children, and how we honor Him as our loving Father.

Join us for Galatians: Set Free to Live at St. Ambrose Parish Hall from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning September 15 through November 3. Registration forms are available in the Rectory office. For more information, call Bill Whiting at 561-368-6531 or email [email protected].

Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Retreat - Saint Ambrose Parish Be Merciful as Your Father is the retreat theme this year which supports Pope Francis’ declaration of an extraordinary Jubilee year of Mercy. Last year we enjoyed the largest retreat group ever from St Ambrose and we hope to see all of you again! It was wonderful to get away, spend time in fellowship with each other and parishioners of 4 neighboring parishes from Deerfield/Boca to focus on our relationship with Christ and our role in this world as children of God. We invite you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to join us this year, to refresh and renew the spirit within and explore how we can Be Merciful like the Father. For more information stop by the parish office to pick up registration information, look for us in the Parish Hall or contact: Women’s Retreat September 25-27, 2015—Contact: Donna Kinney, 954-290-7952

On behalf of the Vincent Porto and his five children we are proud to offer the Luciana Porto Scholarship in memory of his beloved wife and their adored mother. Luciana had such an unique giving spirit that touched everyone she came in contact with. This year, Victoria Jewell showed a caring and giving nature to those around her and received this prestigious award. She helps others with homework, chores, and is a dedicated altar server. She also volunteers at the Pumpkin Patch and Carnival helping her school, her church and her community. We hope to encourage you, the youth of today, to make a difference in the world by getting involved with your community now, helping those around you and being better global citizens so you can follow in Luciana footsteps and help those in need. Congratulations to Victoria Jewell for winning the Luciana Porto Scholarship Award.
