Exploring links between Tullie House’s Japanese and Cumbrian collections.

With a number of Tullie House’s Pre-Raphaelite works currently on tour in Japan, artists from Prism Arts Studio Arts have reimagined the George Howard gallery and created a collaborative exhibition.

This exhibition displays collections originating from both countries, side by side, investigating landscape, industry, tokonoma, home life and even some cats. The display includes works by Sheila Fell, Utagawa Hiroshige, Thomas Bushby, Katsushika Hokusai and Percy Kelly. Some have never, or rarely, been exhibited at Tullie House.

Follow in Turner’s footsteps in this world-class exhibition which traces the artist’s 1797 tour across the North of England.

It is clear from his very first visit that Turner had fallen under the spell of our sensational Cumbrian landscape as he visited the region’s spectacular lakes, mountains and castles. The visit ignited his passion to further explore the more dramatic scenery and mountains in Wales, Scotland and the Alps on his subsequent tours. This exhibition includes some of the very first mountain-themed works that Turner exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1798, along with later watercolours that reveal his development as a visionary painter and a poet of the landscape sublime. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these ground-breaking works depicting Cumbria and the Lake District, Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire in close proximity to the landscape that inspired them.

Tullie House is the second in a three-venue tour across the North of England, which is supported by the Weston Loan Programme, and includes breath-taking watercolours of Ullswater, Windermere and Buttermere Lake. This extraordinary collection including loans from the Turner Bequest at Tate presents a wonderful opportunity to explore Turner’s visionary genius.

Local school children are also being inspired by landscapes in our Turner School Art Competition - the top 10 entries will be displayed alongside the exhibition!

Tickets: Normal admission charges apply - free for Annual Ticket holders.

2019 commemorates the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669), one of the most recognised and admired artists of all time.

To mark the occasion, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is proud to present an exhibition celebrating the artist’s ground-breaking etching work. Featuring a stunning selection of original etchings from the prestigious British Museum collection, these important works reveal a rare insight into the Dutch artist’s development, experimentation and pioneering role in the field of etching. The exhibition will give visitors a unique opportunity to see several important works on paper not seen before in Carlisle. Drawing on the Tullie House collection, the exhibition also considers the influence of Rembrandt on contemporary artists, comparing prints by prominent artists such as French Realist and Impressionist painters Millet and Pissarro, among others.

Tickets: Normal admission charges apply - free for Annual Ticket holders.

You will print a small edition of prints using a mixture of traditional and modern materials and a professional etching press.
