READING DANTE AT THE IIC

The Italian Institute of Culture is delighted to announce the new season of the series “Reading Dante at the IIC”.Several times throughout the Commedia Dante addresses the reader with the belief that he will be read by the futura gente – ourselves, and this we shall do with Prof. Corinna Salvadori Lonergan. We shall first read the conclusion of the three Cantiche and follow this with 10 readings dedicated to the poetry and drama of Dante’s Inferno. After emerging from hell and seeing le stelle, we plan to do a further 10 readings of Purgatorio and 10 of Paradiso. It was not intended, but the resulting number of readings will be 33, very Dantean. The encounters will take place in the Pavilion at the Italian Institute of Culture on Tuesdays at 6.30pm, ending about 8.00. The explanation will be in English and the reading of the text in Italian. We look forward to welcoming all who want to enjoy the wonder of the Commedia, readers old and new, without worries about your knowledge of the language. Dante will improve it.

In 2009 she founded ‘The Resurrection Office’: an “Institution established for the recovery of words from the past, now fallen into disuse despite their extreme pertinence to our life on earth”. The Special Survey is a qualitative plebiscite investigating the human spirit. Among the terms on display, please vote for those words from the past that best describe the most widespread human flaw of the present day. Join us for this book launch presented by Corinna Salvadori Lonergan and co-editors John C. Barnes & Daragh O’Connell. This volume opens with the bold suggestion that the seven deadly sins constitute a key to the structure of Inferno and Paradiso as well as Purgatorio. It ends with a discussion of cowardice (not strictly a deadly sin) in Inferno, followed by a look at Dante himself in the light of all the capital vices. In between, each of the seven sins is focused on in turn.

Daniele Benati reads Raffaello BaldiniIn Italian

“Baldini’s texts have the wonderful simplicity of fairy tales. It is for this reason that they can be read again and again without becoming tiresome. In the entire civilized western world, simplicity is usually considered as something inferior. Baldini is one of the few who make us realise that simplicity is the highest conquest of words. But he achieves it through an unbelievably pliable, modulated, and complex prosody, which revolves around a few fundamental sounds, like in modern music. His dialect is a resevoir of these fundamental sounds of emotion.” Gianni Celati

Language has always had an important role in cinema, although the interest of both public and critics is usually focused on other aspects. Italian contemporary cinema acquires an added value through its language, which is a fundamental vehicle of knowledge of a lively society, even outside the national borders. A look at the language in Italian contemporary cinema is an opportunity to celebrate its vitality and its interdisciplinarity but also to reconsider the status of the Italian language, which is – despite the opinion of many detractors – ductile, complex, and alive more than ever.

Autobiografia e teoria nel cinema di Pasolini: il caso dei personaggi trans-testuali With Walter Siti In Italian

Cinema theory in Pasolini is strictly linked to his poetry. For Pier Paolo Pasolini cinema is poetry created through different means. This concept leads to a utopian system of codification, where the filmic “phoneme” is nothing but the body of the actors and acting consists in their mere presence. The result is a short circuit with biography, when the actor is either himself or somebody he loves in real life, like Laura Betti or Ninetto Davoli, who are eventually excluded from “Salò”.
