BY KARLA DONDIO

Robots have long been part of the science fiction narrative in literature and cinema. Who can forget

the goofy but affable R2-D2 and C-3PO in Star Wars, or the menacing robots in the Terminator franchise?

What we’ve lacked in aptitude, we’ve made up for in imagination. Over the last few decades, however,

robotic technology has gained some serious momentum in industry. Retail is one sector taking

advantage of its progress.

robotics

Robotic technology is already offering back-end and front-end operational advantages in retail. In 2014, Amazon deployed 15,000 robots throughout ten of its fulfillment centres in the US. While Amazon’s Kiva robots are not humanoid – think sleek orange tubs on wheels – they’re proving highly effective. When an order for goods is logged in the system, a Kiva bot automatically locates the stock, picks up the single shelving unit from underneath and delivers it to the packer (a human worker). This means the packer can then focus solely on shipping the goods. The system also intuitively tracks popular items, so the robots make sure these goods are always stored closer to the packing stations. Due to the robot’s small size, Amazon can now store 50% more goods and has accomplished faster delivery times. Nearing the end of 2015, the number of robots in operation at Amazon was estimated at 30,000.

Quiet Logistics, a fulfillment provider for fashion juggernaut Zara, registered the help of Locus Robotics to expedite its packing and distribution process. Unlike the squat Kiva robot, the Locus stands at around five foot and is lithe through the body. A touchscreen extends out from its apex while the tray below is used to carry goods. When an online order is processed, a robot navigates itself to the goods where an employee loads it with stock, which

it then transports to a packing station. The robot’s vision technology enables it to move seamlessly around objects to avoid collisions. It’s been estimated the Locus robots will increase productivity for Quiet Logistics by 800%.

Not content to be in the background, robots have found their way into retail stores. Last year, Best Buy installed a robot in one of its a Manhattan stores to test a new customer service tool. “Chloe” is a robotic arm that can be seen working behind a glass barrier assisting customers with purchasing music, movies, games and electronic paraphernalia. Customers can use one of nine touchscreens to select the product they want and Chloe will deliver it to them within thirty seconds. While streaming services might eventually render much of the stock redundant, it’s still an innovative move by Best Buy.

Lowe’s Orchard Supply Hardware in the US demonstrates the kind of ingenuity driving retail operations today. Kyle Nel, the Executive Director at Lowe’s Innovation Labs, commissioned a group of science fiction writers to create a futuristic world of retail. One idea that surfaced during the exercise was OSHbot, which Lowe was so taken by that, within eight months, it was built and onsite in the business’s San Jose store.

8

The term ‘robot’ first cropped up in 1921 when Czech writer, Karel Čapek, used it in his play ‘R.U.R’ - Rossum’s Universal Robots. The term derives from the Czech word ‘robota’ which translates to ‘compulsory labour’. The genesis of robots is said to date back much further to 3000BC when Egyptian water clocks featured mechanical figurines that struck bells on the hour. Other inventions such as the mechanical bird created by Archytas of Tarentum in 350BC also hinted at robotic capabilities.

Today, the more apt definition of a robot is a computerised device that can be automated to accomplish human tasks. One of the first examples can be seen in 1961, when a robotic arm called Unimate was deployed at a General Motors plant in New Jersey. Unimate lifted heavy die castings which it then welded to vehicle frames. Such tasks had always carried an element of danger for workers, so the technology was a triumph and many factories around the world followed suit. Nonetheless, pioneers of modern robotics have always anticipated grander things.

In 1959, Marvin Minsky and John McCarthy founded the MIT Artificial Intelligence

Laboratory in Massachusetts with a plan to create machines that mimicked human qualities. Their vision was more aligned with the creations seen in science fiction movies: robots that could move freely and make autonomous decisions. This laid the foundation for some significant advances in robotics in the ensuing decades.

In 2000 Honda Motors introduced ASIMO, a humanoid robot that looks a lot like a child rollicking about in a space suit. Standing at just over four foot, ASIMO can talk, walk, run, shake hands and serve tea, among other capabilities. Currently, the robot is merely a research tool but if the 2016 Deloitte and MHI survey is anything to go by robotics is one of the fastest growing technologies today.

“Fastest Growing Technologies: This year, 51 percent of survey respondents said that robotics and automation have the potential to either create competitive advantage or be a disruptive force in their industry, and 77 percent said they will have some impact. Adoption is currently 35 percent. It is expected to rise to 74 percent over the next 6-10 years.”

11

Of course, with any technological advancement there’s always the question of whether the impact is strictly positive. Some experts are already decrying that robots will ultimately replace a large percentage of human labour, a similar concern that was raised during the industrial revolution in regards to automation. And while we know how the latter turned out, the rest is conjecture. Still, it’s a topic that warrants our attention to ensure that we create infrastructure to support new roles. It’s worth noting, though, that innovation often does this organically. Meanwhile, businesses that are using robot labour are at pains to highlight that the technology has been deployed to work alongside human workers, not to replace them.

Other fears that have surfaced are that by installing robots in service industries we risk losing the human touch. For exactly this reason, Hanson Robots has created Sophia, an astonishingly life-like humanoid that can talk and has an array of different facial expressions. David Hanson, the creator, hopes

that robots like Sophia can be used in fields of medicine, education and therapy in the future to inspire greater engagement with the technology. Whether this is quite the remedy people were looking for, Sophia is undoubtedly an impressive (some have called her creepy) prototype for humanoids in the future.

Meanwhile, robotics technology isn’t slowing down any time soon. Domino’s Australia is now trialing a self-drive pizza delivery robot that is expected to be on the roads in the next few years. The prototype is currently being tested over the next six months. The unit has both hot and cold storage compartments for storing takeaway goods while it navigates to its designated address. The goods can only be accessed by a unique mobile phone code so you can rest assured no one else can help themselves to your dinner. It also has inbuilt cameras to monitor vandalism and theft which could pose as a potential threat. Make sure you look out for a pizza delivery droid coming to your neighbourhood soon.

If a stand-alone EFTPOS kiosk had a good-looking cousin that might very well be OSHbot. While that’s not saying much, OSHbot’s best features are by far its capabilities. OSHbot is quintessentially polite, greeting customers to the store before asking what it can assist them with. Customers have the option of telling OSHbot what item they’re looking for or they can place the item in OSHbot’s view finder for recognition. Once the item has been identified, OSHbot will show the customer where the goods are either on an in-store map or by navigating the way. OSHbot is also fluent in English, Spanish and a number of Asian languages and, with inbuilt collision control, floats seamlessly around the store. At night, it itemises stock for inventory control.

Wanting to capitalise on the technology, Target trialed a robot nicknamed “Tally” earlier this year. Tally was being tested to see how accurately it could monitor inventory in the

chain store. Target reportedly also has its eye on customer service robots in a concept store somewhere down the track. While no trial data has been made public yet, it’s likely just a matter of time before we see robots taking over inventory duties.

Throwing something altogether unique in the mix, Hointer in Seattle wants to revolutionise the way men shop using robotics. Founded by former Amazon executive, Nadia Shouraboura, the idea was inspired by the notion that men don’t enjoy shopping. It works likes this: customers download Hointer’s mobile app, scan the QR code on the item they’re interested in and then log the size on the app. The app then designates a changing room where the item is already waiting for the customer having been delivered via a shoot using robotics. So far, the store has offered a seamless shopping experience while decreasing its labour costs and front-end storage room.

Meet our

Team lisa

What is your nickname? Lisel

Tell us what you love about working at Touch. I love being part of an amazing, passionate team. No two days in my role are the same. I enjoy helping merchants and resolving issues. Touch is very innovative so there’s always something exciting happening.

Favourite movie? Ali, I think Will Smith did an amazing job portraying Muhammad Ali’s personality.

Favourite place in the world? Las Vegas. I went there thirteen years ago and didn’t spend a cent gambling nor did I party. I loved the weather, and how the city was full of life. The Grand Canyon was the most amazing place I’ve ever been!

Memory you treasure the most? Travelling around the world with my parents, countless amazing memories were made on that trip!

What do you think your team would say about you? I think they would say that I’m a people person, and really enjoy speaking to my customers and improving processes. They would also probably say that I’m always eating!

Which would be harder to give up, coffee or alcohol? Definitely coffee! I’m very lucky to live in Melbourne – there’s always great coffee nearby!

Favourite movie genre? Disney children’s movies

Greatest fear? Sharks – I get recollections of the movie Jaws.

What is your favourite product Touch supply? Myer gift cards. I always buy these for everyone’s birthday! I always find that people tend to buy things they want which makes it difficult to select a gift for them, this way, they can pick whatever they like!

Who inspires you? My mum, she is incredibly selfless and the strongest person I’ve ever met. She is my definition of super woman!

All-time favourite song? Alicia Keys – if I ain’t got you.

Lisa joined the team at Touch 6 months ago. She is responsible for managing the Touch Service Desk team of 17 staff. Lisa is a valuable member of the

Touch team; we hope you enjoy learning a little more about her!
