Message from Membership I’d like to start off my note this month by thanking ALL of the employees of The Woodlands
Club who helped to make the August 22nd Family Fun Fest a huge success. Pulling off an event
of this size was no small feat and their attention to details and member service was remark-
able.
It was wonderful to see and talk to so many members and guests at the Family Fun Fest. Pho-
tos of members and guests enjoying the festivities will be available on our website shortly in a
special on-line photo album.
Our next big Woodlands event is an adult only event. Take a safari with us on Friday, Septem-
ber 26th during our 26th Anniversary Safari Themed Celebration. The price to attend the event
is $60/person (tax & gratuity included) which includes hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dessert, musical
entertainment, dancing and more. Event details are on the front page of the newsletter and on
posters throughout the Club. We’d love to have a big crowd attending, so guests are welcome. Aside from the Family
Fun Fest, this is our biggest event of the year and so we plan to make it a memorable one. Please join us, as this prom-
ises to be a WILD time. Jungle safari attire is optional.
Looking forward to seeing you around the Club.
Mary Anne
From the General Manager The waning days of August mean, among many things, the end of another summer of Sports
Camp and Kiddie Kamp at The Woodlands Club. I really can’t say enough about the efforts,
attitude and talents brought to these camps not just by Damian Dow, Beth Streeter and Lynn
Dunn in their leadership roles, but each and every one of the young men and women that
make these camps an enjoyable and enriching experience for your children. I am literally al-
most in awe at times at the positive attitude these people bring to the job every day. Amazing!
I salute you all and thank you for the role you play in making The Woodlands Club such a spe-
cial place.
On a similar vein, I also want to mention this month how great of a membership I think we
have. It is impossible to describe the interactions one has on a daily basis with numerous
members from a wide variety of demographics, but that is where the seed for this theme
comes from. When I look back someday on my career I will recall all of the relationships (friendships actually) that I
forged with so many. I think my profession is somewhat unique in that regard, because it isn’t everyone that interacts
with so many on a daily basis. I will tell you that with a large influx of new members on a fairly consistent basis it isn’t
always easy to remember names, but I keep at it!
I hope the golf community is enjoying our irrigation updates. I know some may see it as no more than a fancy new sprin-
kler system, and I get that, but I can assure you that it means more. I see a project that will significantly enhance the golf
experience in ways that we won’t even see for a couple of years down the road. I see all of the benefits of proper irriga-
tion, but I also see many benefits from the increased time Ryan and crew will have for projects other than repairing irri-
gation breaks.
Until next month, we will see you around the Club.

Golf
From the Director of Golf and the Golf Committee
While the season is winding down, Fall is still a great time to highlight some basic golfer
responsibilities regarding care for the course. The first two reminders relate to the dam-
age caused by the golfer when playing the game and are the direct responsibility of the
player to mitigate. The second two reminders are also the golfers responsibility and al-
though they do not cause damage they directly affect how the course plays for the play-
ers that follow you.
The most obvious is the replacement of divots. If there is a solid divot that
remains intact it should be replaced and firmly stepped down with your foot.
The next critical golfer responsibility is to immediately repair your ball mark and at least one other
when you walk on the putting surface. The point here is to immediately and gently use the surround-
ing turf to fill the mark. Just tapping down the mark with your putter does not provide any benefit.
Work the turf that was pushed back forward, then gently work some turf in from the sides, and tap
down the area with your putter. The finished product should hardly be noticeable and should heal
within 3-7 days.
Another critical thing is to tap the sand off your shoes as you exit the bunker. This affects playability
of the putting surface. This, along with repairing yours and one other ball marks will do wonders to improve the playability of the putting surface.
Bunker rake placement is often debated but our current philosophy is to place the rake on the low
side of the bunker parallel to play and outside the bunker.
The next few reminders relate to how we choose to get around the golf course. We realize golf carts are nec-
essary but they cause a great deal of damage from soil compaction and turf wear which add substantial expense
to the maintenance of the golf course.
Always keep golf carts 30 yards away from green complexes.
If the cart rule is 90º please adhere to the rule. 90º does not mean drive down the center of the fair-
way.
Always keep all 4 tires on the path. Do not pull off the path even slightly.
Avoid sharp turns on fairways; this pushes and scars the turf.
Pull carts should not be pulled across tees or greens.
Pull carts should be used only in the fairway or rough.
Never park a pull cart on the green approaches or collars around the greens.
Stand bags should not be placed on tees, approaches or collars.
By following these simple directions and easy rules the golf course will look and play nicer for all club members.
Thank you for taking your responsibilities seriously.

“What’s the Call?”
Here’s the scenario: This edition isn’t a rule scenario, but more of a
court observation. At the professional level, what
is the AVERAGE height at which a player’s ground-
stroke passes over the net? HINT: It’s not what it
appears to be on television!
What do you do?
The Answer to August’s
“What’s the Call”
The scenario: While playing doubles, you hit a crosscourt shot
that was in and bounced wide into the adjacent
court. The player on that court was getting ready
to return serve, and when they saw the incoming
ball they swatted it out of the way. Your opponent
asks for a let on the basis of a hindrance.
The answer: A player on an adjacent court is considered to a
“permanent fixture” just like the divider cur-
tains. The point is over immediately when any
player on an adjacent court touch your ball, re-
gardless if you had a chance to return the ball in
play or not.

A Brief Introduction from the New Member Communications Specialist I am excited to have taken on this role at the Woodlands.
This position really is a perfect combination of my hospital-
ity and communications experiences.
A little background on my end, I spent the past five years
working as a guest service supervisor and revenue manager
at the Hampton Inn in Wells. During that time, I also wrote
and edited freelance for a variety of companies. Leading up
to that, I attended St. Joseph’s College in Standish and
earned my degree in Communications.
As you can see, I have made a few slight changes to the
newsletter, hopefully nothing you find too drastic. I’d love
to hear your feedback and suggestions regarding anything
“member communications” related so I can continually im-
prove and provide you with the best product possible .
I look forward to meeting everyone, and to the projects we
have ahead. Thus far, everyone has been more than wel-
coming and incredibly helpful.
Thank you all,
Brittany Bar tlett
Club News (Continued)
I asked Bill for an opportunity to write and thank the members I have met on the course, on the range, in the Fitness Center
and in the Dining Room since my wife and I joined the club.
Because of a reoccurrence of cancer, my left leg was removed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in a very complicated, 21
hour operation in December of 2012. After six months of enforced bed rest to allow the surgically joined bones to heal, I re-
turned to playing golf in June of 2013, and joined the club early this spring. As those of you who have met me know, I am de-
termined to play golf at the highest level I can, given the limitations of my artificial leg. My goal for this summer is to break 90
from the member’s tees. I am closing in on the goal having shot several rounds in the low 90’s. At some point before fall I will
shoot my first round below 90 in more than two years.
However, the most important part of my journey has not been the actual golf on the course; it has been the tremendous sup-
port and encouragement I have received since we joined the club. To a person, everyone I have met has been tremendously
welcoming and has gone out of their way to make me feel comfortable. Because of my artificial leg I am unable to climb hills of
even a slight grade without great effort. As a result, I must take a golf cart close to greens and tees (where normally you would
NEVER see a cart). While I always stay in the rough and away from any manicured surfaces, it must look strange to see some-
one drive a golf cart where I must in order to be able to play. My playing partners have always been supportive and helpful with
little things like hurrying to pull the pin because I walk somewhat slower than normal or offering to rake a bunker for me. I
truly enjoy the challenge that I face in rebuilding a golf swing and my overall game-- that enjoyment is heightened by the cama-
raderie I have experienced.
I am sure that long-term members know that the welcome I have received is indicative of the spirit and overall feeling of the
club, but I would be lying if I said that I did not have some trepidation about coming out to play once the course opened this
spring. My fears were unfounded and I felt the need to write to formally thank those of you who have made this transition not
just easy but truly comfortable at a very personal level.
In addition to the members, I owe a special thank you to Bill and his staff, Doug and the folks in the Pro Shop, and Ryan and his
great crew who keep the course in such wonderful shape. They all worked behind the scenes to anticipate and accommodate
my needs.
Thank you once again and I hope we will have a chance to play together soon.
