Five million women are diagnosed with PCOS each year. However PCOS is under diagnosed due to the elusive nature of the disorder and unclear diagnostic criteria. Not all women with PCOS will have all of the symptoms of PCOS. PCOS is the leading cause of infertility in women, however, some with PCOS have no trouble conceiving. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a misleading name for this disorder because, 50% of women with PCOS will have ovarian cysts. 50% will not.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a result of insulin resistance therefore, treatment is aimed at lowering insulin resistance to prevent long term complications and improve quality of life. PCOS is genetic and although there is not a cure for PCOS,

with proper management symptoms can be reduced and diseases associated with it can be prevented.

SEPTEMBER NEWS Dr. Scott Howell is working on several projects for theTier 1 Center for Clinical Research.

1. Institutional application with the Department of Health and Human Services to register an Independent Review Board (IRB) to conduct clinical trials at the practice location in Chattanooga, TN.

2. Peer-review submission to an Elsevier journal coauthored with Dr. Nichols and colleagues in Spain and Brazil. The title of the work is "Vitamin D supplementation in the management of male health: A narrative review of current evidence."

3. Conducting a clinical case series study on men treated with testosterone and symptoms resolution.

4. Preparing a critical review of a recent meta analysis on HRT in post-menopausal women.
