After graduation, I took some time off to chill and relax. I moved to a new place in North Park, and got to go visit family in Philadelphia. It was a great time! When I got back, I resumed applying to jobs in hotels while going back to work at Starbucks. Within 2 weeks, I got a job offer as a Guest Services Associate (front desk) at the Wyndham Harbour Lights, downtown. Now I work there full time and live that adult life!

Carole Ohara

I studied abroad in Switzerland, so I met w/ Chinese, Indian, Swiss, and American students to learn about each other's health care. Gruyere is where the Swiss cheese and chocolate factory is then did side traveling in Paris, London, and before I left, I went to the Builders Club EOTY banquet at Boomers!!!

Jamille Cabacungan

I have just been living the glamorous life of an adult. I enjoy where I'm working, I'm still living in San Diego like I wanted to, which means I still get to hang-out with all of my friends I know their presence has definitely made the transition into this part of my life so much easier than it would have been without them!

Stephanie Fryar

You can just say that I spent a month studying abroad at the University of Stirling in Scotland, where I had the opportunity to explore many beautiful parts of Scotland as well as its major cities. I also am currently spending several weeks with my mom and siblings in England, and we've been sightseeing in places like London and Stonehenge.

Allie White

Hey friends and newbies, living in the real world is hard! Lately I have been working a lot and hanging out with friends whenever I can! Of course, I try to f it in some league time. I am currently reading the series A Song of Ice and Fire by G.R.R. Martin and I must say it’s just as cool as Game of Thrones. Although I am out of col lege and being a grown up, I want you guys to know that I'm stil l here if you need anything!

Marissa Amat

My summer consisted of seeing family &

being on a plane! I kicked off my

summer with spending time with my Dad,

brother & sisters going to NEW YORK

AGAIN! I had a blast touring and seeing

one of my favorite places in America

for a second time. I then came back to

SD and spent the majority of my time

hanging the Bae Hershey, watching

reality tv & having midnight adventures!

Imani Baldi

For the most part, my summer was busy. I worked until towards the beginning of August, when my district committee hosted DSSS! It was amazing and I loved being able to meet them in person.

LETTER FROM

Hey Circle K,

It’s been a pleasure this past month getting back into the rhythm of Circle K and getting to know all of you new members out there (: I hope that regardless of whether or not you’re new or returning that you’ve had fun with us so far!

I know that midterms are upon us now and it might be difficult to you to come out and join us for our service and socials (which is totes understandable! School first! :D), but if you can carve out some time, I would love to see you guys come out to New Member Installation! At this event all of our new members will be receiving some well-deserved love and recognition for their time, efforts, and overall awesomeness… and there’s gonna be food so why not go?

With that, good luck to everyone on your first round of midterms this semester! If you need a break, you know where to find us. J

Sincerely,

Yvonne Velasco

BOOKMARKING EXTRAVAGANZA

INTENSE WEEK OF SERVICE?

THURSDAY: BOOKMARKING EXTRAVAGANZA | FRIDAY: FEEDING THE HOMELESS  SATURDAY: RUFFIN CANYON CLEANUP | SUNDAY: MID ATUTUMN MOON FESIVAL

What is intense week of service you may ask? Think of rush week for sorority’s and fraternities, and then apply that to Circle K! We

basically set up a whole week’s worth of service in order to get everyone excited and pumped up for the upcoming year.

Bookmark making was a goo time. It was cool way to start off the year of service. I unfortunately had class until 6:45, so I missed the majority of the fun. When I got there, I saw there was a lot of progress already one. We had several notebooks with personalized inspirational quotes written in them and so many unique and creative bookmarks. I sat with Imani and Hershey who were, of course, going for a One Direction theme with their bookmarks, which I thought was sweet because it made theirs especially personal. I only got to make 4 bookmarks during my time, but I tried my best even thought I lack creativity or drawing skills. It was really exciting to make bookmarks for kids to promote literacy because I personally have always love reading, and I’d love to give kids an excuse to read a book, even if they don’t usually like reading.

Andrea Steele, family head

FEEDING THE HOMELESS  A handful of students came together on a Friday afternoon to help out San Diego’s homeless community. We all met up and packed meals consisting of our homemade PB&J sandwiches with delicious Capri Sun juices and chips. This was a great opportunity to meet returning and new members as well as getting to know what this club is about. After packing the meals, some of us went to Downtown to pass them out to the less fortunate. I feel like society is desensitized to this topic and tend to forget that these individuals are people too. Sometimes they need help, just like any other person. Passing out the meals made me really appreciative for the many awesome opportunities I have had the chance to experience. Even though the contribution is little to us, to them, it could have possibly been the best thing that happened to them in a long time. If this opportunity pops up again, I definitely encourage you all to come and participate. Not only will it make your day a little better, but it has the possibility to make someone’s day a whole lot better.   Francis Banaña, general member

RUFFIN CANYON CLEANUP

Sam Pfau, co spirit chair

The Canyon Crusaders Cleanup gave Circle K members a chance to show off their strength as they carried large fallen palm tree leaves up the hills of Ruffin Canyon. Outdoor temperatures were soaring past the 80s but everyone was in good spirits and working together. I was so happy to see new members coming out to the event and working incredibly hard to help out their community. It wouldn’t have been possible to get as much done as we did without y’all! Major shout out to all of you and to the returning members that volunteered too. 6

Of the month

MID AUTUMN MOON FESTIVAL

Patrick Cuaresma, general member  BAJA DOG RESCUE PET ADOPTION

On September 13th SDSU's Circle K volunteered with the Baja Dog Rescue in an effort to get a number of rescued dogs a new home! It was a great experience being able to help out a good cause, and was even more fun playing with the dogs trying to entice potential families to adopt them! Those who volunteered at the event rotated between flyering outside the supermarket across the way andin front of the pet store where the dogs were, and playing with the dogs inside the pen. Flyering was something I've had never done before and was out of my comfort zone, but I learned useful tips from my partner! It was awesome to see how much people cared and were willing to help out the dogs even if they couldn't adopt one. This was an awesome (and very cute!) service event and I am glad I was able to help out.      Gabriel Hernandez, general member

  K-KIDS EVENT

Kevin Nhim, general member   7

My experience at the Moon Festival with Circle K was pretty cool. We didn’t do much volunteering because the people there were already prepared. After that everyone watched the opening ceremony and then we watched some type of dragon dance. Then we went to go get food at the food trucks; I got a burrito with bulgogi beef and fries in it. After the ceremony was done, everyone from Circle K met up and some of us decided to go get boba. I was excited cause Vivian, the current single secretary of Circle K that is looking for a ruggedly handsome Filipino man that is at least silver in volunteering and has money to lavish her with the luxurious gifts that she deserves, was going to buy me boba cause she owed me. But she decided to go back to her place and not and it made me super sad. Luckily Andrew, was super cool and bought me boba. Then Andrew took me back home. The End.

The K- Kids Project started at around two o'clock on September 19th at Hearst Elementary School. Our goal was to plant flowers and ivy into a bare plot of land. Before the kids arrived, we were given different responsibilities such as handing out plants, giving out woodchips, or putting fertilizer into the soil. When the kids arrived, we all performed our duties, and the once bare plot of land ended up into a beautiful garden. It was during this event that I realized that I needed to work on my leadership skills because I had some difficulty organizing a few of the kids into the line. However, I thought this was a rewarding experience and would love to do it again!

¡WOOOO SERVICE!

LEWIS MIDDLE SCHOOL BARBECUE

Lisa Kanemori, past spirit chair

PARADISE DIVISION BEACH CLEANUP

Stephanie Lozano, general member

CHEERING FOR A CURE

Imani Baldi, public relations chair

There is nothing more fun than back-to-school barbeques!    On Friday, September 19 a group of us from Circle K went to Lewis Middle School to volunteer at their fundraising event.   We helped pass out burgers and hotdogs while also serving side salads and drinks.   The best part about the whole thing (besides the yummy food we got to eat afterwards) was how we were able to work with three other different levels of Kiwanis.    We had our sponsoring Kiwanis club, Grantville Allied Gardens, who grilled all of the meat and donated half of the food & beverages.  We also had the Patrick Henry High School Key Club helping to foil wrap the food.   Then finally, we had the Lewis Builder’s Club.   Although we didn’t interact with them as much, we still got to meet some members.   We had some new faces of Circle K attend, including Tammy and Patrick and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.  What an awesome way to kick off the year!

This past Saturday, Sept. 27th, some of us went out to be cheerleaders for the participants in the City of Hope walk/marathon. We were provided with pom poms and tambourines, but our main tool was our voices! The walk was kicked off with us cheering and shouting words of encouragement at the start of it. We then, made our way to the halfway point to keep their spirits up as we cheered some more. With the combination of Circle K and some Division 21 Key Clubbers, we were able to help make all of the participants feel empowered! The walk ended with us cheering the participants upon finishing. I had a lot of fun, and it was a great way to wake myself up!

8

We had the Paradise DCM and Cleanup in La Jolla. I loved hearing about the different events in our division and the cool ideas and events others had recently. Afterwards we cleaned up the beach and surrounding neighborhood. In my group, we started off finding the normal trash. But then we started finding utensils and started a mission in finding all the items included in a dinner set. Towards the end of he cleanup we had everything but a fork. As the end was nearing, we finally found a fork and our dining set was complete! Although La Jolla may seem clean, you can always find small things that add up and harm the environment.

This is how we do

FUN IN THE SUN

Tran Vu, past historian chair  MUTANTS VS HUMANS

The Manhunt Social held on the 12th was pretty awesome. There was a good mix of regular and new attendees. Several people who were visiting from other colleges as well as new attendees were also present. We played 2 rounds of Manhunt. In both rounds, we were split into “humans” and “mutants”. This game was a bit different from the previous one since both groups had to find certain things before they can start trying to tag the other players. The games were pretty tiring, but they were also a lot of fun! Although I couldn’t tag along to get some food after the social, I had a great time playing Manhunt with the other attendees and meeting new people. Hope to do it again sometime!   Lionel Lumido, general member

MAZE RUNNER MOVIE SOCIAL  This is one of my favorite socials so far, not only because I got to see Dylan O’Brien on the big screen! Hershey and I got to the movie theater earlier than everyone, so we were able to be the first one’s in line to get into the movie. With such great luck, we saved everyone a seat like a ‘G’; also making sure that we could sit around each other and bond even more. Everyone seemed to enjoy the movie, some more than others (VIVIAN). Some of us decided to get food after, while others decided to just go home. Overall, it was a really good social!

COWLES MOUNTAIN HIKE

Sharanee Sytj, general member

Imani Baldi, public relations chair

9

The Cowles Mountain hike was definitely a great social! It was tough at times, but in the end it was completely worth it.    Our group got there with time to spare before the sunset, so we snuck in some icebreakers to get to know each other better.    I think the time we spent at the top of Cowles really helped us bond, it was great!  After the sun set, we all made our way down, and it was definitely way easier than hiking up the mountain. Overall, this social was a lot of fun, it was great to sneak a workout in while bonding with my fellow Circle K members.

Attending Beach Social, one of the club's first socials of the semester, was a good way to cool off after enduring the heat from the previous week. With over twenty people attending, we were able to bond and have the members get to know each other on a closer basis. Prior to heading to the seashore at Mission Beach, we relaxed at Belmont Park, primarily scouring the area for good food, gathered everyone, and dispersed afterwards after finishing our meals. For over three hours, we participated in swimming, playing volleyball, sand sculpting, warding off hungry seagulls, and other various activities.    From picking up seashells for souvenirs to seaweed for pranks, we utilized our surroundings to the best of our extent for entertainment. Overall, it seems like all of the attendees had a wonderful time with socializing, no matter what they were doing.

Meet the board

Hello! I’m a senior this year in Civil Engineering. I have a love for clothes and running but an even greater love for burritos!

I had an interest in community service and I was looking for a placed a belonged here at SDSU. I found the service I was looking for sure, but little did I know that this club would sooner than later become more like family to me! Circle K was welcoming from my first meeting and since then I’ve made some of my closest friends and learned so much not only about myself but also about growing as a leader. (:

Melissa Farlow VP of Administration

Yvonne Velasco President

Hello friend! I am a junior with a major in Communications and Sociology as

a minor.

My interests involve consuming as many potato products as possible,

pretending I have abs, and snap chatting people back before texting

them back. I also like making people laugh so watch me perform with our

improv team at State, Iota Eta Pi!

I joined Circle K to make friends, and I'm here today with a family.

Fun fact: I strongly dislike emoticons

that use equal signs for eyes

(example: =]), but emoticons that use

colons (such as J) are A-okay.

Fun Fact: My favorite number is

22. I like the number 2 but there's

two 2's in 22 like wow man
