According to a study reported in the daily mail, the british alternative medicines market has grown by 18 percent in

the past two years, to a yearly value of £213 million (€270million). this value is expected to rise another 33 percent, in the next four years. this increase has been seen across the board, even in less well-known treatments such as traditional indian ayurvedic medicine.in the united states, retail sales of vitamins and supplements totaled almost $639 million between October and december, a nearly 10 percent increase. sales of herbal supplements have increased 6 percent. this increase is particularly striking given the overall downward trajectory of spending in that same time period. alternative medicine includes a lot more than just massage therapy and back adjustments, though. Finding natural ways to cure allegedly incurable diseases is part of alternative medicine as well, and increasing numbers of people are turning to alternatives for the treatment of serious illnesses.the daily mail reports that analysts at the firm mintel attribute much of the growing popularity of alternative medicine to wider acceptance by both the public and by governments. in the united Kingdom, for example, acupuncture treatment is now covered by the national health insurance plan. the bowen technique is covered by some major health insurance companies in the uK and abroad. another cause might be the rise in the diagnosis of mood disorders,

such as depression and anxiety. due to the potentially serious side effects carried by psychiatric drugs, many more patients are now turning to homeopathic remedies such as st. John's wort. the herb, used primarily to treat depression, was purchased by an estimated 1.5 million people in the united Kingdom in 2008.another major factor driving the growing popularity of alternative medicine, at least in the united states, is its relative cheapness compared with pharmaceutical or other mainstream health remedies. a u.s. national institutes of health study released in december confirms this claim. approximately 18 percent of survey respondents said they had used nonvitamin, nonmineral products as health care. twenty-five percent of these said they had also delayed or foregone conventional medical treatment due to the cost.People who use herbal supplements or similar remedies should inform their doctors that they are doing so, as some supplements can interfere with prescription drugs or vitamin intake.there are still many alternative treatments and therapists here in the east algarve (many advertising in this magazine) and plenty of shops selling suppliments and natural products. always consult your doctor, but then you are free to decide which course of treatment you want to take. support your therapists to help them train, develop and stay in their areas. they are there to help you help yourselves.

Alternative Medicine

Sales of alternative medical products are on the rise in spite of and perhaps in part because of, tough economic times.

Tendinitis commonly results from excessive repeated demands placed on the tendon by the muscle. the illness is caused by

the tearing of tendon fibers and consequent inflammation in the tendon. it is seldom caused by a sudden injury, but it is frequently a result of a long period of overuse. the bone misalignments and muscle shortening, poor nutrition and lack of antioxidants can also be causes of tendinitis.tendinitis happens commonly with active persons and those whose job-related tasks need repetitive movement. certain diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, also can cause it. it usually occurs in the shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, heels or wrists. depending on where it happens, it may have a special name, such as tennis elbow. Some common names for various tendinitis problems are: • tennis elbow• Golfer's elbow• Pitcher's shoulder• swimmer's shoulder• Jumper's kneeSymptomssigns and symptoms of tendinitis occur at the point where a tendon attaches to a bone and typically include: • Pain, often described as a dull ache, especially when moving the affected limb or joint• tenderness• mild swelling, possiblyRisk factorsrisk factors for developing tendinitis include age, working in particular jobs or participating in certain sports. ageas people get older, their tendons become less flexible — which makes them easier to injure. occupationstendinitis is more common in people

whose jobs involve: • repetitive motions• awkward positions• Frequent overhead reaching• vibration• Forceful exertionSportsYou may be more likely to develop tendinitis if you participate in certain sports that involve repetitive motions, especially if your technique isn't optimal. this can occur with: • baseball• basketball• bowling• Golf• running• swimming• tennisComplicationsWithout proper treatment, tendinitis can increase your risk of experiencing tendon rupture — a much more serious condition that may require surgical repair. Tests and diagnosistendinitis can usually be diagnosed during the physical exam alone. Your doctor may order X-rays or other imaging tests if he or she needs to rule out other conditions that may be causing your signs and symptoms. Treatments is there a simple way to treat tendinitis? tendinitis should be treated differently depending on the severity of the condition. the most important thing is to discover the cause of tendonitis and eliminate it.the best and fastest results are obtained with realignment of the bones and articulations, the muscles relax and lengthen, and this automatically reduces the inflammation of the tendon.Therapies• Physical therapy (ultrasound therapy, electrotherapy, laser)• massage therapy• elimination of most physical

activities/sports• elevation and compression of the painful area• ice or heat packs• acupuncture…if tendinitis is severe and leads to the rupture of a tendon, you may need surgical repair. but most cases of tendinitis can be successfully treated with physical therapy .do not wait. treat your tendonitis as quickly as possible. the faster actuation of the therapist better prognosis.

The French physician michel Pistor created this technique in 1952. little subcutaneous injections filled with homeopathic

products treat various injuries and pathologies, and can also be used as a non- surgical cosmetic treatment. the needles used in mesotherapy are thin and short: 4mm. the treatment doesn’t have any side effect or contra-indications, except in pregnancy, breast-feeding or cancer.microscopic quantities of homeopathic medications are introduced into the skin. tiny bullets of product are delivered into the mesoderm, to nourish and rejuvenate, to stimulate the metabolism or relieve pain. For the pathology and pain reliever, mesotherapy can treat inflammation in articulations, tendinitis, and tennis elbow, lumbago, sciatica, arthritis, arthrosis neuralgia, rheumatic pain etc. the pain and the inflammation can be reduced after the first treatment. more treatment enhances regeneration. For the aesthetic, mesotherapy can

be used to treat local fat, cellulite, obesity, flaccidity, stretch marks, scars, lipoma etc. after treatment, the patient’s skin looks glowing and firmer, sagging skin is toned and tightened. it works as a highly effective rejuvenating treatment. it is also a good alternative to plastic surgery.some homeopathic product can also be used for anxiety, nervousness, insomnia and stress.before the start of the treatment, the practitioner will meet the patient and discuss which treatment they need, the best product to use and where the product will be injected. One or a cocktail of 2 or 3 homeopathic remedies are used for each case, to increase the effect and the result. the patient will need between 12 to 24 sessions, one per week, or one every 4 days, however, it could be less than 12 sessions, depending on the individual case.

some of the homeopathic products used are arnica and spigelia for lumbago. For inflammation on articulations i use arnica for the pain, briona to lessen the inflammation or with berberis to eliminate the wastes and toxins. nux vomica for flaccidities and local fat, Pulsatila for the stretch marks, arnica for scars and special cocktail for different kind of obesity: nervous, ovaries, thyroid). if you have any queries please email: [email protected] treatments offered at the “Gabinete de Osteopatia” in tavira:

Pedro côrte real and michael roberts created the beautiful Gallery six years ago and now represent over twenty five international artists. michael was kind

enough to show us around the impressive and unique garden galleria, and describe how it all began.michael explained that Pedro has a warmth and zest for poetry, art, gardens, cookery and a love of painting african themed artwork. Originally from london, michael spent many years in Paris as a creative director and wanted to move from corporate design to gallery design. they enjoyed being creative, working together creating art, lamps and decorative objects.in 2005 they took their work to a traditional

craft fair in tavira and having booked their spot for two days, amazingly every piece of art was sold in the 1st day. exhibits are now presented in themed rooms within a traditional Quinta once lived in by Pedro’s grandmother many years ago, which had since lain derelict. it has now been sympathetically restored, retaining a traditional feel. the structure of the original house has not been altered and each room contains a mixture of beautiful art work, ceramics, exotic lights and unusual arts and crafts. in contrast, the ‘cube’ in the Quinta’s amazing garden is a larger, clean, relaxing and unique area to display larger paintings as well as beautiful hand crafted sculptures, woodwork, pottery and jewellery.

An emporium of International art, Corte-real Gallery is located in the glorious countryside north of Boliqueime in the unspoilt village of Paderne.

We at the east algarve magazine like to introduce you to new ventures and activities that we hope you will enjoy, and this month is no exception.

We were recently kindly invited by denise and her family who own and run the Quinta beldade stables, located between tavira and conceição, to meet her family, the delightful horses and their comical pets.denise’s parents moved to new Jersey in 1984 after they married. denise was born in the us and in 2002 they all returned to the algarve. they then moved to tavira in 2008, denise followed with the horses and opened the riding school in 2010. Passionate about animals, denise helped out at a local stable in nJ and was rewarded with lessons and a chance to gain experience. after moving to Portugal she continued her passion with her father’s friend’s horse, and whilst attending school in vilamoura she also helped out at a riding school for fun, and again was rewarded with riding lessons and more hands on experience. after completing a 3 year equine studies and quality teaching course she went on to work at a riding school in

north alentejo, and decided with her wealth of knowledge and experience she would like to do something back home in the east algarve. being landscape gardeners, her parents helped with creating the charming grounds of the house where the lessons now take place. appealing to all ages, the school runs lessons from age 5 and up, and also does equine therapy classes for children and adults with various mental disabilities. You can take a group or private lesson in a variety of disciplines, such as jumping and dressage, or go out for a hack through the local farmlands or participate in a pony camp day from the stables where there are 9 horses, charlie the donkey, Gigi (the pig that thinks it is a dog) as well as Pilas the family's Jack russell. From beginners to advanced, the bilingual lessons start from as little as 7€. You can enjoy a tranquil environment to learn a new hobby and professional sport, join a group or top up your riding skills. it was a pleasure to meet them and see the fun that the children were having whilst making new friends. For more details contact denise on 965 461 577 or 913 735 756 or email [email protected]

Many people, who in the past have affectionately referred to ‘Green bishop square’ in tavira, will now

have to revise their reference to the pretty square near the roman bridge. thanks to the painstaking cleaning work recently undertaken, antonio maria marcelino Franco has been restored to his former glory. the statue of the former bishop of the algarve takes pride of place in the picturesque gardens surrounded by small, intimate cafes and restaurants. Praça da alagoa, to give the square its correct name, has been home to the statue since 1971, a hundred years after the much loved bishop was born in tavira. antonio maria marcelino Franco was appointed bishop in 1920 and served until his death in 1955. he is buried in the main chapel of Faro cathedral. another memorial to have been given a makeover recently is that of Joaquim lopes in the gardens that bear his name by the waterfront and market in Olhão. born in the town in 1798 he moved to the lisbon area when 20 years of age. he became an international hero saving many people from the sea in the treacherous currents that are a feature of the confluence of the Oeiras

and tagus rivers. between 1828 and 1866 he rescued many sailors from certain death including the crew of three british ships - one of which was the schooner howard Primrose - the French vessel stephanie, spanish brigandine achilles and numerous Portuguese craft. many countries bestowed awards on Joaquim lopes and he was honoured by the british Government with the Queen victoria silver medal and later, when he saved the crew of the vessel british Queen, the gold medal. in 1866 he was belatedly awarded Portugal’s top honour, the Order of the tower and sword. in 1890 he returned his british medals to the government in london. but why should he do this? Portugal was hoping to link up its african colonies of mozambique and angola, east to west, but the british government had other ideas with the aspiration of creating a north-to-south cape to cairo railway.the 1890 british ultimatum, forced the retreat of Portuguese military forces in africa. When Portugal acquiesced to british demands, it was seen as a national humiliation by republicans, who denounced the King and the government, which subsequently resigned. the british ultimatum was

considered by Portuguese historians and politicians at that time to be the most outrageous and infamous action of britain against her oldest ally. there were violent protests in lisbon and the union flag was burnt. Joaquim lopes died later that year at the grand old age of 92.

A humorous look at Church NoticesMost churches these days tend to produce a weekly notice sheet with the object of keeping the members

of the congregation up to date with what’s happened in the last week, what’s going on in the church and various items of information to make them aware of forthcoming events.

most of these notice sheets are invariably put together in a rush by very busy people working for nothing, and from time to time the odd spelling mistake or badly phrased wording may accidentally creep in.all of the following are genuine notices from various english church notice sheets... enjoy.

‘St vincent's chaplaincy’ (the church of england in the algarve) is moving its regular

monthly services in tavira into the town. For over two years the congregation have worshipped at 6:00pm on the second sunday of every the month at the church nossa senhora do carmo, which is in the grounds of the vila Gale albacora hotel.during that two years, a regular and growing congregation has built up to such an extent that they have now advised the chaplain, Father bob bates that a move into the main town will be appropriate at this stage in order to see continued growth.after discussions with bishop manuel in Faro and Padre Flavio of tavira, Father bob has been able to secure a new home for this service at nossa

senhora do livramento, in the old town to the east of the main centre and regular worship will start there on sunday 9th september at 6:00pm.Father bob said, ‘this is a very positive move for us, and we hope to attract additional folk to worship with us. if this does happen we hope we might be able to expand our range of services in tavira.’many thanks go to bruno martins, the manager of the vila Gale albacora and his staff for their friendly hospitality over the last two years and Father bob hopes that st vincent's might still use the pretty chapel in the hotel grounds on future occasions. You can contact Father bob bates on 289 366 720 or email [email protected] for further details

If you are selling your home it doesn't have to look like it's straight out of a magazine, but try to show it at

its best! Real Estate Agent Robert Bijker explains.

If you are currently trying to sell your home, there is a good chance that it has been on the market for some time. a slow market does

not last forever and you only need one buyer for your property. at the moment buyers are spoiled for choice, so make sure yours stands out. it is essential that you achieve the best possible price, regardless of a weak market. spring and autumn are the most active times to sell property in the algarve, make sure you are ready. here is some advice to help you prepare. We all know curb appeal is important. take a good, hard look at the outside of your property. tidy up the gardens where needed, paint/repair the fence, remove old building materials and clutter. the outside woodwork should be in good condition and if this is not the case, i’m afraid you should get it repaired and repainted.try to spruce up the garden the day prior to the viewing.the inside of your house should be sparkling clean and free of all the clutter. remove family photos, old newspapers, shoes, coats, hats, food trays of pets.a prospective buyer needs to be able to see your property as a potential new home for their family, so anything that could detract should be (temporarily) removed. they are interested in your property, not your personal life. so when it comes to removing clutter, be ruthless.in general any other colour other than neutral on walls and/or ceilings is a disadvantage when selling your

property. all light switches should work, replace broken light bulbs. if you happen to live in the algarve, you may consider baking cookies/bread and/or have fresh flowers. if you manage to have the cookies ready to coincide with the viewing, you please both your prospective buyer and estate agent! not to mention the smell of freshly made coffee. at the end of the day, it is all about creating that homely feeling. spending money on a bouquet of flowers is fine for your own enjoyment, if you can afford it. Pictured below is an example in case you have a smaller budget and own a property with a garden. if you have a palm tree, take a branch (the one that is already turning brown at the edges anyway). cut the brown parts of the leaf, put it in a vase as back ground decoration with one or two flowers in front. depending on the season, you can pick flowers from your garden. the leaf of the palm tree stays green for 2 weeks, you may want to change the flowers more often.some rooms can be over-furnished. remember less is more, people want space.during a viewing, do not talk about your personal life in great detail. information about your health, personal or financial problems will not help you to achieve a good price for your property. if you are

FanTaSTiC LoW pRiCeS!

having health problems, remember to remove all medications out of sight before the viewing.leave toilet seats down, complete any unfinished diY jobs and bathrooms should be very clean.if you have pets, ask a friend for their honest opinion if there are any

smells in the house. You want to know and air the property before a viewing. remove pets before a viewing. some people are allergic to animals. they will leave your property faster than they arrived.lastly, there may be good reasons as to why you had

only a few viewings for your home. Just ask your agent, it could be something you could easily rectify or it could be overpriced.

The Olympic Games of 2012 will long be remembered, not only as a wonderful spectacle but as a feast of athletic prowess, dedication

and commitment. no more so than that of chris hoy whose six gold medals, spread over three Olympics, make him the most successful ‘gold’ british Olympian of all time. his inspiration came from his great uncle andy coogan, who was born in 1917, the oldest child of poor irish immigrants growing up in the slums of the Gorbals in Glasgow between the wars. andy coogan was tipped for Olympic glory, but a promising running career was interrupted by war service. his capture during the fall of singapore marked the beginning of a three-and-a-half-year nightmare of starvation, torture and disease. ‘tomorrow You die’ is the epic life story of a man who was imprisoned in the notorious changi camp before being transported to taiwan, where he worked as a slave in a copper mine and was twice ordered to dig his own grave. digging a grave for his dead mate, speedy, he dug deep to bury his friend out of the reach of scavenging animals, deeper than the sadistic lieutenant suzuki in charge of the detail had demanded. the Japanese officer, furious at being disobeyed, screamed at him to stop but coogan ploughed on until speedy was decently buried. as he finished and put down his spade, suzuki eyed him coldly. ‘dig another grave,’ he then ordered, ‘for yourself. tomorrow you die.’ it was a threat that coogan knew would be carried out. the end had come. however, next morning there was another dead POW to dispose of from the over-crowded, rat-infested huts. coogan buried the fresh corpse, and suzuki told him again.

‘dig another grave, for tomorrow you die.’ the same happened the next day, and the one after that. the mental torture continued for days, until suzuki tired of the game. coogan, a devout catholic, was also forced at gunpoint to trade punches with an irish priest he knew and respected, as a punishment for forgetting to bow to the Japanese flag on the bonnet of a staff car. it was slug it out for the amusement of the guards or die where they stood. coogan came close to death as dysentery ravaged his weakened body. in the camp hospital, he lay on a platform drifting in and out of consciousness. the voice of his friend, the catholic priest, kept him from giving in, taking him back to his running days. ‘come on, andy! a lap to go!’ somehow, with that same determination his nephew seems to have inherited, he pulled himself back from the brink. his struggle was of a magnitude almost impossible to comprehend. “he has seen such horrendous things, yet he isn’t negative or bitter,” says hoy, who, aged eight, with tape recorder in hand, ‘interviewed’ his great-uncle for a school project and sat goggle-eyed with amazement as the stories of quiet heroism and endurance unfolded. the word ‘hero’ has been sprinkled with casual abandon during the Olympics but in someone like coogan, we are reminded of its true meaning. no wonder that hoy nominated his uncle to carry the Olympic flame when it passed through scotland in June on its journey to london. he did so, in white tracksuit, clutching his mobility frame and waving to the crowds. it is an uplifting story that needs to be conveyed to people of all ages so no one forgets the remarkable bravery of people like andy coogan.

An astonishing survival story by Andy Coogan

No matter your garden size the majestic flowering camellia plant can be a valued asset to your garden

GrowingCamellia in the Algarve

even with the hot summer temperatures here in Portugal we can still enjoy the winter flowers of the camellia in our

gardens. the more familiar is the very showy camellia japonicas. these are prized not only for their lovely winter flowers, but also for their glossy, evergreen leaves. camellias are useful as foundation plantings, specimen plants, flowering hedges, or tub and container plantings. choosing the right camellia for your situation is the most important

step in successfully growing any camellia. Factors to consider include suitability to your particular climate, flower, form, blooming season, and the actual growth habit of the plant. Plants that bloom from January through February are recommended for warmer weather areas, and november through december or march through april blooming varieties are recommended for cooler weather areas.HiSToRycamellia japonica has appeared

in paintings and porcelain in china since the 11th century. early paintings of the plant are usually of the single red flowering type. however, a single white flowering plant is shown in the scroll of the Four magpies of the song dynasty. the camellia was first brought to the West in 1692 by engelbert Kaempfer, chief surgeon to the dutch east india company. he brought details of over 30 varieties back from asia. camellias were introduced into europe during the 18th century

and had already been cultivated in the Orient for thousands of years. robert James of essex, england, is thought to have brought back the first live camellia to england in 1739. On his return from dejima, carl Peter thunberg made a short trip to london where he made the acquaintance of sir Joseph banks. thunberg donated to Kew botanic Gardens four specimens of camellia japonica. One of these was supposedly given in 1780 to the botanical garden of Pillnitz castle near dresden in Germany where it currently measures 8.9 metres (29 feet) in height and 11 metres (36 feet) in diameter. the oldest trees of camellia japonica in europe can be found in campobello (Portugal), caserta (italian) und Pillnitz (Germany). all of them were probably planted at the end of the 18th century.CuLTiVaRScamellia japonica is valued for its flowers, which can be single, semi-double flowered or double flowered. there are more than 2,000 cultivars developed from c. japonica. the shade of the flowers can vary from red to pink to white; they sometimes have multi-coloured stripes or specks. cultivars include 'elegans' with large pink flowers which often have white streaks, 'Guilio nuccio' with red to pinkish petals and yellow stamens, 'mathotiana alba' with pure white flowers, and the light crimson semi-double-flowered 'the czar'. c. japonica 'alba Plena' is nicknamed the “bourbon camellia”. captain connor of the east india

man, brought the flower to england in 1792. the flowers are pure white and about 3 to 4 inches across. it blooms earlier than most cultivated camellias, in the early winter or spring, and can flower for 4 to 5 months. the zig-zag camellia or c. japonica 'unryu' has different zig-zag branching patterns. “unryu” means “dragon in the clouds” in Japanese; the Japanese believe it looks like a dragon climbing up to the sky. another type of rare camellia is called the fishtail camellia or c. japonica 'Kingyo-tsubaki'. the tips of the leaves of this plant resemble a fish's tail. pLanTing camellias can be planted at any time of the year, provided they are given proper care, but are usually planted in autumn or spring. they are shallow-rooted plants that will not do well if planted too deeply or mulched too heavily. One good way of planting a new camellia is to dig a hole, leaving an un-dug area in the middle to rest the plant on. this prevents settling which could cause the plant to sink too low into the soil. do not add organic matter to the soil at planting time - just fill the hole back in with the excavated dirt. being slow growers, camellias are slow to become established, so care should be taken to eliminate competition from tree roots and weeds during this establishment phase. most camellias do their best in partial shade. Placement in a northern or western configuration usually works

better than in a southern or eastern-facing position, as protection from strong morning sun helps the plant withstand the colder weather better. leaf scald or leaf yellowing can occur when not enough shade is provided. Water once a week while the plant is becoming established, and once established; soak once per week during dry spells. camellias prefer a slightly acid soil, and periodic applications of an acidic plant food will usually be appreciated. a thin layer of mulch to conserve soil moisture is also recommended. pRuning camellias typically need minimal pruning. necessary grooming and shaping should be done in late winter or very early spring after blooming. Pruning in late summer or fall removes flower buds, but selective removal of undesirable branches can be done to retain a neat shape. shearing should be avoided because it destroys the natural plant form and results in a dense layer of foliage that blocks light from the interior branches.pRopagaTion. the most common and easiest methods of propagating camellias are by cuttings and air layering. rooting plants from cuttings ensures that plants retain the characteristics of the parent plant. cuttings are usually taken in July from hardened spring growth.air layering is a simple propagation method that allows one to produce a good-sized, "true to type" plant in a short amount of time. a ring of bark is removed from a pencil-sized

stem, and moist sphagnum moss is wrapped around the wound. roots grow into the moss and the rooted stem can be cut from the mother plant and then potted to allow for further root growth. Once they are well rooted in the container, they can then be planted into the landscape. air layers should be started in april and will be ready by august.Grafting is used to propagate varieties that have desirable characteristics, such as exceptional flowering, but a weak root system. Grafting permits the union of the desired top (scion) with a vigorous root system (root stock) to yield a superior plant. seed propagation results in tremendous seedling variation with a high percentage of undesirable seedlings. seeds should be collected as soon as they are ripe (July–september) and placed in flats or pots. Germination can be expected in 2–4 months if the seed coat is broken or scarified before sowing.

diSeaSeS.some fungal and algal diseases include: spot disease, which gives the upper side of leaves a silver color and round spots, and can cause loss of leaves; black mold; leaf spot; leaf Gall; Flower blight, which causes flowers to become brown and fall; root rot; and canker caused by the fungus Glomerella cingulata, which penetrates plants through wounds. some insects and pests of c. japonica are the Fuller rose beetle Pantomorus cervinus, the mealybugs Planococcus citri and Pseudococcus longispinus, the weevils Otiorhyncus salcatus and Otiorhyncus ovatus, and the tea scale Fiorinia theae.some physiological diseases include salt injury which results from high levels of salt in soil; chlorosis which is thought to be caused lack of certain elements in the soil; bud drop which causes loss or decay of buds, and can be caused by over-watering, high temperatures, or pot-

bound roots. Other diseases are oedema and sunburn. not much is known about viral diseases in c. japonica.the subject of growing camellias is vast and can be very confusing for the novice gardener, but i have tried to give you a good starting point for you to decide whether or not you might like to add a camellia or two to you garden, and remember even in the s m a l l e s t of gardens you can still grow a camellia in a pot so you can enjoy the flowers of the camellia over winter.

In these days of Fiat currencies (money backed by nothing but promises that may only exist as entries in the computer systems and ledgers of financial institu-

tions), debt has replaced hard assets as collateral for loans. right at the very top of the tree, central banks accept debt obligations as collateral for loans at full face value, whereas they treat another bank’s Gold hold-ings at 50% weighting.Judge for yourself: go back to 2003 and imagine a bank that has €1bil-

lion in Gold and the bank next door has €1billion in mortgages and mortgage backed securities. Fast forward to today – the Gold reserves of the first bank are now worth €5bil-lion, whereas the reserves of the sec-ond bank has collapsed in half with the number of mortgage defaults, compounded by the fall in property prices.so today we are going to discuss what Wealth really is from an article by charles hugh smith from Of two minds:

What is Wealth? We all think we know what wealth is, but sometimes the "obvious" misses the mark.asking "what is wealth?" seems needless because we all know what wealth is: never having to work again, endless leisure, endless consumption of the "good things of life," being waited on hand and foot, luxurious belongings, vehicles and homes, a life of travel and sport, trust funds, stacks of secure gold, and so on.

Is Debt Wealth?

Banks are loaded with it, China is loaded with it, but debt is only as good as the debtor in our opinion.

all this is "obvious," but is that certainty illusory? there are many people with $2 million in net worth, a significant number with $20 mil-lion, and more than a few with $200 million. all would be considered wealthy by the average household earning $63,000 annually with a total net worth of less than $100,000, not to mention the 61 million american wage-earners who pull down less than $20,000 a year who own neg-ligible net worth.those with a mere $2 million may not reckon themselves wealthy, if their eyes are fixed on those with $20 million. but if a wealthy person suddenly discovers they are riddled with fast-growing cancer, then they quickly lose interest in financial wealth except in terms of what med-ical treatment it can buy.there really isn't much more modern medicine can do for someone worth $200 million than it can for someone worth $2 million; once one's life and health are at risk, then conceptions of "wealth" are drastically reordered: health is wealth, and nothing else matters.Once lost, health is difficult to re-store, and financial wealth is no lon-ger the key metric. the graveyards are full of extremely wealthy people who died "before their time."a life of leisure may not be all it's cracked up to be, either. Whether it is paid or not, work is the foundation of meaning and identity. those with-out work become depressed, those who retire often fade and die, and those with no goals or work ethic become dilettantes who enrich vari-ous therapists and pyschiatrists with their ailments and unhappinesses.it's not just leisure that's wealth, it's control of one's work life.We might also ask if wealth corre-lates all that closely with happiness. Judging by the hordes of wealthy people who are drugged-out, al-coholic, and in permanent therapy, we can surmise the correlation is not quite as strong as the "financial wealth is everything" Pr would have it.Who is happier, the "natives" serv-ing the supine, isolated wealthy per-

son, or the wealthy person? it turns out it's the people who have a well-earned place in a caring community who are healthier and happier than those who are unloved and isolated, regardless of their wealth and power.if our labor is compensated in fiat currency that can be depreciated by official whim, then how much of our labor do we actually "own"? the line of inquiry it raises applies to all financial wealth held in currency.precious metals, long a favorite of those seeking timeless wealth, also have their own pitfalls. being small in size and easily transport-able, they are also easily stolen or confiscated by authorities. a few coins sewed into garments to be used to bribe border guards are an extremely useful form of wealth, but any large cache of precious metals attracts criminals and central state authorities, i.e. higher-order crooks. Wealth that can be stolen or confis-cated has a nasty habit of being sto-len or confiscated. What about real property? an ex-pansive estate is certainly "wealth" if it generates income, but if it hap-pens to classify you as an aristocrat in revolutionary times, then various unpleasantries typically follow, and the wealth that seemed so desire-able is transformed into a death warrant.Wealth is not as fixed as we might imagine; it only appears solid in eras of stability. in times of instability and transformation, wealth that ap-pears solid can evaporate in crisis or crumble in devolution.health, skillsets, work you control and a caring community are pecu-liar "assets" in that they cannot be confiscated by others for their own use. they are uniquely bound to in-dividuals and relationships in a way that financial wealth is not: financial wealth can always be separated from the individual, but the individu-als' skills, community and relation-ships cannot be confiscated.if financial wealth can't buy health or happiness, then what can it buy? Perhaps all it really buys is an illu-sion of security and happiness that turns to dust once it is within grasp.

All the latest local sports news from Chris Wright.

Olhanense, the only Premier liga team south of setubál, pulled off a major coup with the signing of world

famous keeper ricardo, Portugal’s hero in the penalty shootouts against england at the euro Finals 2004 and World cup Finals 2006. capped seventy-nine times for his country, the affable custodian is very much at home in the algarve where he has a villa. in the quarter-finals of ueFa euro 2004 against england with the teams level 5–5 in the shoot out, he saved darius vassell‘s penalty and then, stepped up to score and send Portugal through. in the World cup semi-Final 2006 shoot-out, ricardo saved the penalties of Frank lampard, steven Gerrard and Jamie carragher. “ricardo sets record and puts Portugal in party mood," said daily diário de notícias in its front page headline. correio da manhã said: "ricardo was heroic once again, entering the history books as the first to save three penalties in a World cup." in beating england, Portugal reached the semi-finals for the first time in 40 years, having also done so in 1966 when they were beaten 2-1 by england. in January 2011, he signed for leicester city citing manager sven-Göran eriksson as his motivation for joining the club. it was here that he acquired his love of golf. at thirty-six many would consider him too old to regain his international place, but this is one committed player who may prove them wrong. in 2006 ricardo was awarded the Ordem do infante dom henrique for exceptional and outstanding service to Portugal

and its culture. the Order of Knighthood was created in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of henry the navigator. President of sc Olhanense, isidoro sousa, said, “i'm extremely proud to have a goalkeeper of his quality at our club.” a week later and manager sérgio conceição was on the verge of leaving the club after words with President isidoro sousa regarding new additions to the squad. a tumultuous close season had seen the departure of salvador agra (real betis), andre Pinto (Panathinaikos, Greece), Fabiano Freitas (Porto), mexer (nacional, madeira), ismaily (braga), cauê (vaslui, romania), Wilson eduardo (sporting), meza, toy, mateus, regula, dady & Gerson. the altercation between the management and coaching staff appears to have been resolved with both parties committing themselves to the future of the club. "sergio will continue to have management support, with the straightforwardness and respect we all deserve. there were some differences, we will continue to work together in the best interests of the club", said isidoro sousa. For his part, sergio conceição responded "We reached the conclusion that my continuation was the best solution and here i am body and soul. i want to continue the work done last season, knowing the limitations, this will be a difficult campaign but we will do everything in our powers to maintain our place in the league. " against a background of difficulties and with few resources, the coach said "it is a difficult challenge, one more in my

life. let's grab the bull by the horns!" to add to their problems the pitch at the José arcanjo stadium is in such a poor state that the opening league game against newly promoted estoril would have taken place at the algarve stadium if adequate notice had been given to the league. the game against league champions Fc Porto on the 1st september was played at the algarve stadium.

BRigHT STaRTafter the opening weekend of fixtures Olhanense were top-of-the-table thanks to a 2-1 win over newly promoted estoril. With six games ending in stalemate and maritimo winning 1-0 the sports media had Olhanense top of the pile for the first time in their 100 year history! sérgio conceição gave debuts to summer signings ricardo, nuno reis (on loan from sporting), abdi and babanco. the tricky abdi, who plied his trade with Ferencvaros (hungary) last season, was impressive as was the rejuvenated Jander. Was this the same player who looked so mediocre last season? estoril scored from the spot after handball by nuno reis but minutes later Yontcha levelled the score when he netted at the near post. Fernando alexandre wrapped up all three points with a blistering 30 metres strike in the second-half. a week later and Olhanense started their travels with a trip to coimbra to take on académica. the home side should have been in front after just five minutes when edinho failed to score when clean through. he made

amended early in the second-half to give académica the lead. Fifteen minutes later and a delightful high chip from Fernando alexandre was swept home by former Kilmarnock player david silva to give the algarve side a share of the points.eaSy Win FoR poRTugaLPortugal played their only game between euro 2012 and the start of qualifying for the 2014 World

cup at the algarve stadium in mid august. Over 24,000 fans turned up to see cristiano ronaldo, nani, raul meireles and their colleagues gain an easy a 2-0 win thanks to superb strikes from nélson Oliviera and cristiano ronaldo. Portugal start their quest to reach brazil 2014 with matches away to luxembourg 7th september and at home against azerbaijan 11th september.

after 2,172 miles bradley Wiggins became the first briton to win the tour de France on the avenue des champs-Élysées in one of the most glorious

fairytales in a century of british sport. the build-up to this glorious triumph started eight months ago when Wiggins won the fifth stage - lagoa to Portimão - of the volta ao algarve the traditional first event of the cycling calendar. another cycling icon, lance armstrong, has also been making the news but for all the wrong reasons. the american’s legacy was left in tatters when he stunned the cycling world by giving up his fight against doping charges. the us anti-doping agency, who made the doping allegations against the 40-year-old, acted swiftly by wiping out all of his victories dating back to august 1998 – including his seven tour wins. armstrong, who never failed a drug test before retiring last year, continues to protest his innocence. the cycling star became one of america’s greatest sporting heroes when he beat testicular cancer in 1996 before going on to dominate his sport. in 2004 he won the vila real s.antonio to alvia 24kms individual time trial and finished fifth overall in the volta ao algarve.

Swing with the left arm & hit with the right hand

The left arm makes the swing and the right, working on a narrower arc, has to be educated to play its role. extend the right arm on the follow through only – i.e., after impact.Far too many golfers think that because they pull

corks, write, use a screwdriver or spanner with their right hand, this hand knows how to hit a golf ball. it does not. it must be trained to do the hit at the ball – a combined sort of hit and throw. that is the trick. Following on with both arms extended after impact helps the right hand to hold on and helps to keep the club-face square for an extra few inches in the impact area.remember, hold loose the right hand do not freeze the grip. (a golfer is only as good as his hands.)Practice hitting balls with right hand only (see pictures) you must feel the release of the club head, don’t try to push the ball.

good golfing, Keith
