BROOKE'S SENIOR ADVICE

As a freshmen, I felt very alone.

My fr iends from middle school did not go to my new high school, so I did not know what to expect during my freshmen year. The movies always depict high school as this big, scary place where you must some kind of clique or group to be a part of, so you do not get bullied. I am a senior now and my personal experiences of being in high school were highly unrealistic to that of the movies. My school has no well-known cliques. There are no main jock, geek, goth, cheer, nerd, artsy, or an in between of any group with the same stylistic people.

Our school may have cheerleaders, but they are not the main gossip. There are jocks, but a lot of them aren?t the stereotypical dummies-they are smart as well as being in Great Scholars and Honors classes. There is not a geek club, but there are robotics people who may also be apart of something like the ROTC or the Astronomy Club. There are Gothic people, but they aren't the typical all black and non-social types. They are artsy and also nerdy.

We are all mixed together really, but then again we are not.

We are all individuals trying to make our own footprints-some more defined than others.

Whether you fit in should not be your mindset as a freshmen, believe me. If anything, make your own moves and trust wholeheartedly in them because no one else will.

I wish as a freshmen, people would have told me that it was okay to feel like an outsider-especially when we were made to wear different colored school shirts than the upper classes. It was really okay to automatically be seen as prey to older men and women in the school because when you get out that predicament, you would know your real worth when you came to school and gave it your all the next day. There is a lot of stress in school.

I wish someone would have said, ?There are days when you would want to give up, but that is okay. Your back-of-the-mind thoughts to try to ?fit in? are okay.? What I learned was that I did not need to fit in. Every chance I got, I was a hundred percent me and was okay being genuine. Having a strong mind and heart helps in high school.

What if you do not have these groups of people who are the same as you, that dream is unrealistic in high school.

Everyone is still trying to figure out themselves from freshmen to senior year and from senior year into adulthood.

No one is better or perfect if they are older, and to think that is naive.

* Do not listen to the hype.

* Feel how you feel, express yourself, and don't care so much about petty things.

* Feel the liberty to stress and even have moments of severe anxiety or depression. You are a teenager after all and it is okay.

* As someone who is with more than one racial background with curly hair, I have been looked at as either goth or emo, but I am also very colorful, poetic, creative, awkward, sappy, goofy and smart.

* I can honestly say through my years of high school being my genuine self, I am okay with NOT finding similar people to me.

* I am an indiv idual and so are you.

Shenandoah Elem entary. I have been teaching for 10 years in January 2018. I have taught pr ivately and with youth orchestra for 26

years.

There real ly isn?t m uch that I don?t l ike about W oodlawn H igh School . The teaching facul ty is stel lar along with the adm inistr a-

t ion. Last year when I m oved back hom e fr om Colorado, i t took m e awhi le to get accl im ated to the W oodlawn atm osphere. I had a lot

of help fr om fel low teachers and especial ly M rs. W i l l iam s. The one th ing that I do real ly love is wearing a W oodlawn T-Shir t

along with casual shoes and slacks on Fr idays.

3. W hy i s m usi cal educat i on so v i tal ? M usic uses both sides of the brain . Students who are involved in m usic edu cation throughout their school years

and score h igher on the SAT?s and ACT?s than students who are not involved in m usic education. I would l ike to see m usic becom e a core class in a stu-

dent?s education here in Louisiana and especial ly in East Baton Rouge Par ish. M usic teaches discipl ine, team work , creat ivi ty, and enhances a student?s

abi l i ty in m ath and science.

The orchestra wi l l also be per form ing with choir on 7 De- cem ber here at school . This is som ething that the or -

chestra is exci ted about and feel very honored to be asked to per form with the choir. The orchestra wi l l also be go-

ing to solo and sm al l ensem ble contest in the Spr ing, along with doing a Spr ing contest.

- Why w as t he Haunt ed House canceled t his year ?- The reason t he Haunt ed House is canceled t his year is t hat w hen I sat dow n w it h Mrs. Rachel Mor t on t o t alk about a few

quest ions I had about Woodlaw n High?s Theat er Depar t m ent . I or iginally st ar t ed t he haunt ed house I was working w it h Mrs.

Arnold, t he ar t t eacher. My schedule was done in such a way w here I was of f dur ing t he lunch per iods so t hat way we could hold

and set up t he haunt ed house dur ing t hose t im es, and t hen t hey changed my schedule giving a class at t hat hour. Not only was I

t r y ing t o run a haunt ed house, but I also had a class. I had t o wat ch t he w hole t hing, inside and out by myself , and it got w ild. We

had an incident w here an act or got punched because som eone cam e in t here and said t hey were scared? (Uh hello! It 's a

HAUNTED house not a Sunday st roll!) I had one rule, no running in t he haunt ed house, but st ill we had people running and knocking

walls dow n t hat 's a dangerous sit uat ion for a lot of people. Hopef ully, I can get a group of t eachers w ho are int erest ed nex t year

t o br ing it back.

- What are you doing in place of t he haunt ed house?- "Inst ead of t he Haunt ed House, I decided t o do a collect ion of plays by Edgar Allen Poe, w ho of course is a very f am ous w r it er

w it h creepy t ales. We st ill want t o get t he am biance of t he Haunt ed House and have som et hing t o celebrat e dur ing t he

Halloween season and st ill have f un w it h it . The dif ference is t his t im e w ill be m ore cont rolled; you have your act ors on t he st age

your audience in t he seat s. And no walls f alling on t op of people!."

- ?What is a piece you have alw ays w ant ed t o do but couldn't ? Why couldn't you do it ? - "Chicago! I'm not a huge musical f an, but t here are som e musicals t hat are just really well w r it t en, t he music is am azing, and

t hey have good choreography, but musicals like Chicago are not age appropr iat e for high school, it com es across w it h som e very

adult t hem es. Anot her obst acle we f ace w hen it com es t o musicals is t im e, musicals t ake a lot of it and it 's dif f icult w hen kids

are so spread bet ween dif ferent act ivit ies such as band, f lag, cheer , foot ball, and ot her life event s. If we can f ind m ore kids t hen

m aybe it 's possible,but f inding kids w it h singing, dancing, and act ing skills is hard in high school. I want it t o be good: it would be

f inding enough st udent s t o par t icipat e. I t hink t hat 's w here our biggest problem is.?

PANTHER NATION DRAMA

On Septem ber 8 at 12:20 pm I sat down with M r. Daniel Ei land and asked him

som e quest ions about the robot ics team . One topic we discussed was about was

how he becam e the robot ics teacher. ?The coach that was here at the t im e wanted

som e help and asked m e to help h im .? M r. Ei land said.

W e also talked about what was in store for the robot ics team th is year , and as

every year they get a new gam e to bui ld and take to com peti t ion. The gam es

consists of m etal scrap par ts and tools. Each year they bui ld a 120 pound robot to

com pete against other schools. They prepare them selves using com m unicat ion

and team bui lding. I t?s m ain ly about tr ain ing, preparat ion, and design.

The Robotics team is one of the two clubs that has been here the longest, and i t

cont inues to grow each year.

I decided to cal l Mr. Jack Lamper t and asked him a few quest ions.

- If you have m ult iple people called back for one role, how do you cast

t he role?

- Well when I cast the leading roles I have to make sure I cast them for

everyone, I always want the leading lady and leading man to work well

together. Also I take into consideration the other roles in the production,

how they contrast against our leading pair.

- What do you look for in an audit ion?

- Above all I look for confidence, I look for talent of course, and also I look

for good listening skill; they must have the ability to follow directions.?

- What is your process for choosing t he shows you choose?

- We actually have a Play Reader Committee! We get six or seven

suggestions and read through them and our artistic director Jenny

Ballard makes the final calls.

PANTHER NATION'S NEW MAGNET PROGRAM

I int erviewed Mrs.Wat son in her of f ice Tuesday, August 22 about t he new

m agnet program at Woodlaw n High School.

I sat in her of f ice and we began t alking about

how it felt being t he new Head Coordinat or of

t he Magnet Program .

In Mrs.Wat son?s words ?It ?s so excit ing and a

brand new advent ure for m e and t he

com munit y?

Mrs. Wat son?s m ain job is t o m ake sure t hat she

can assist st udent s and parent s and also

ensur ing t hat our m agnet program is t he best it

could be.

Dur ing t his week of school, t here was a m ajor

dif f icult y w it h t oo m any st udent s in one class.

?Most st udent s chose t heir classes at t he end

of t he school year. Since t he m agnet program

was added in t he m iddle of sum m er , all of t hose

classes had t o be sw it ched around. We

event ually f ixed t hose scheduling issues.?

I was cur ious t o know, w hat m akes Woodlaw n

High?s s m agnet program dif ferent f rom ot hers?

?In our m agnet program we m ost ly focus on

accelerat ed academ ics. In our program we have

specialized courses, r igorous core academ ic

classes (AP classes) and dual enrollm ent classes

t hat are st ruct ured t o prepare our st udent s for

college. And in addit ion t o our m agnet courses,

we also focus on our ex t ra cur r icular choices

t hat are not found at all t he ot her m agnet schools. Som e choices we have are

ProSt ar t , Medical Term s, Em ergency Response; Spor t Medicine, Freshm an and JV,

Varsit y Foot ball and Volleyball, Baseball, Marching Band, t he Sw im t eam , t he Golf

t eam , and brand new Lacrosse Team !?

- What is your main goals for Dr ama club? What do you want club

member s to lear n?

- The main reason for Drama club is to give students a chance to share

their talents and to get involved with other students that enjoy

theater.?

- What are some upcoming performances you and the Drama club are

planning??

- At the moment we have none, the Drama club and I are constant ly

reading through different plays trying to find the perfect one that really

showcases each individual member's

talent.?

- I think people should know that Drama is a

Em ergency Medical Responder (EMR)

class is a certification course and a focus for

Woodlawn High.

I asked t he st udent s in t he class several

quest ions:

What are you doing?

Saving lives using CPR We are practicing chest

compressions at proper rates and depths with

thirty (30) compressions every fifteen (15) seconds

with a depth of two (2) inches. We are also taking

two (2) breathes and watching for chest rises. Our

peer evaluator, the kid behind the dummy, is timing

compressions and monitoring depth

Why does it m at t er?

We may save someone's life like a family member

or friend.

What did you learning?

We learned how to restore breathing and how to

respond to a medical emergency at home and in

public, such as our workplaces.

What is t h is class? What are t hey learning t o do

in t h is class?

Emergency Medical Responder is the first step in

the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) educational

sequence. Their next step is Emergency Medical

Technician Basic (EMT) Basic. Their Final Step is

becoming a Paramedic.

What w il l t he st udent s learn af t er CPR?

They will learn how to treat burns and the Heimlich

Maneuver.

He has lost it all again and he feels ut terly alone. How can he keep going frant ically knowing no one will be on the other side to crash into?

WHAT IS EID-AL-EDHA?September 1-4, 2017-Muslims within Panther Nat ion observed one of the

holiest holidays in their calendar year.

Eid-ul-Adha or the Festival of Sacrifice is a representat ion of two significant Islamic

events: the culminat ion of the Hajj and the sacrifice that God commanded to Prophet

Abraham of his beloved son, Ishmael.

Hajj means, ?to cont inuously strive to reach one?s goal.? The Hajj, or Pilgrimage to

Mecca, is a once-in-a-lifet ime obligat ion for those who have the physical and financial

ability to undertake the journey.

The Hajj is essent ially a re-enactment of the rituals of the great prophets and

teachers of the faith.

Pilgrims symbolically relive the experience of exile and atonement undergone by

Adam and Eve after both were expelled from Heaven, wandered the earth, met again

and sought forgiveness in the valley of Mecca.

They also retrace the frant ic footsteps of the wife of Abraham, Hagar, as she ran

between the hills of Safa and Marwa searching for water for her thirsty baby (which

according to Muslim tradit ion, God answered with the Well of

Zamzam).

Last ly, the pilgrims also commemorate the willingness of

Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael, believed by Muslims to

be the forefather of all Arabs, for the sake of God. God later

subst ituted a ram, or a lamb, in place of his son.

Celebrants who include Panther Nation's Ala Ayaad and

Yusra Chabayta share special prayers at the Mosque and

feast and visit family and friends at their homes.
