President’s
Corner
As I am writing the Thunderbirds are flying over. It is so exciting to hear the roar
from their engines. This month has been filled with wonderful events. At our lunch
meeting, Judge Michael Gibbons filled us in on the new Appellate Court. I loved
hearing more about the new judges and how it is working. I saw a lot of you at the
Corley Ranch event. It was great to have some of the candidates right here in our
valley. Usually they bypass us and go to the larger areas. Everyone involved in
putting it together should be very proud. The volunteers did a fabulous job and all I
have heard has been very positive. Right after that I attended a Roundtable
Luncheon hosted by Congressman Mark Amodei. The Nevada GOP Leadership in
the 2nd Congressional Districts along with several other President’s from Northern
Nevada joined together to discuss Nevada Politics. We touched on our state Caucus
coming up in February 2016 and staying focused on getting more Republican’s in
office. I believe we really need to spend more time educating our members and
others on how Nevada caucus’s work! This weekend we have the air show at the
Minden Airport then we go right into Labor Day!!
You have all received your invitation to our 9/11 dinner on Sept. 13th so I hope to
see you there. It is going to be a wonderful evening. We will have a bagpiper,
color guard and an excellent speaker. This is not a fund raiser, but we do auction
some items just to cover the expenses for our guests. Along with the speaker we
also invite several soldiers to be our guests. I hope you will all make them
welcome and show how much we appreciate their service.
Please remember we won’t be having a luncheon meeting in
September. Jacie Peters, our treasurer, needs your reservation by
September 5, 2015. Enjoy the end of summer and I will look
forward to seeing you at our 9/11 dinner.
Thank you, Pat Smith

RECOMMENDED READING
The Constitution Committee
You may have children or grandchildren who are beginning a high school or college course this
September regarding our Constitution. And possibly you might want to read a really good book
about our Constitution as our 2016 campaign season gets under way. In either case a reading
recommendation is The Constitution: An Introduction by Michael Stokes Paulsen and his son,
Luke Paulsen, Basic Books, 2015.
Justice Samuel Alito recommends this book. He describes it as, “A solid, intelligent, reliable, and
interesting look at the origins of the Constitution, its basic structure, and its interpretation over the
course of our country’s history. The Paulsens’ book does not tell Americans what to think, but it pro-
vides invaluable help as they think for themselves.”
The book received very favorable reviews in First Things and National Review magazines, among
others. It has received nothing less than five-star customer reviews (28 of them) from Amazon
purchasers. One reviewer states: “I have always had a reverence for our founding Fathers. . . . I
bought 5 books . . . and gave them to each of my children with the hopes they will have a desire
to learn about the document that preservers all the freedoms we enjoy. This book is well written
for those of us who have not spent a lot of time investigating the constitution’s history. I know I will
read it again and highlight areas that shine light into the darkness of our political climate today, it
will be fun to judge political leaders with some knowledge now of this constitution that they have
taken an oath to defend.”
Please pass along your reading recommendations. Your Constitution Committee thanks those
who already have done so, including Justice Alito.

On September 11, 2001, at 7 p.m., President George W. Bush, who had spent the day being shuttled
around the country because of security concerns, returned to the White House. At 9 p.m., he delivered
a televised address from the Oval Office, declaring, “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of
our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but
they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” In a reference to the eventual U.S. military response
he declared, “We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those
who harbor them.”
Sure, “The Newsletter” tells it like it is, but, wouldn’t it be fun to have a catchy, clever name
for our “newsletter?” Wouldn’t it be more fun to say “I read it in the ‘Trumpeter’ (Carson
City’s newsletter), or the ‘Rap’ (another club’s name)?” I’m sure we have some very smart and
clever members who can come up with a great idea for a title, and maybe even a logo. So, let’s
give it a try.
Please email your ideas to [email protected]. The Board will make the final decision.
A Contest isn’t much it there isn’t a prize attached. So, the winner will not only get a free meal
at one of our luncheons, there will also be a beautifully hand-painted wine glass.
The Nevada Federation of Republican Women (NvFRW) is holding it ’s Fall Convention right here in Carson City. It will be held on October 16 and 17 at the Governor ’s Mansion Nevada Room. Since it is so close, it would be nice to have a good showing from SNRW. Mark your calendars and watch for more information in the near future . Also, if you would be willing to help decorate or provide transportation for out-of-towners, let Pres. Pat Smith know.
