Also at the September meeting, Dr. Jim Roos outlined some of the exciting additions to the March Hinman meeting, including building on the success of the G.O.L.D. program. He has added a S.I.L.V.E.R. program for dentists looking to transition their practice and career.

Trustee Richard Goodroe reviewed the scholarships that were provided to dental schools, hygiene programs and assistant programs. It’s a great feeling knowing that while we help put on the finest dental meeting in the world, we are generating money that the trustees can distribute to help support the future practitioners of dentistry.

Program chair Clayton Davis continues to bring relevant and interesting subjects and speakers with Dr. Steve Hart on November 16. Please note the start time of 4:00PM on that Monday. Mark off some time for the January 21st meeting as well at the Fox Theatre, and bring your staff for a team building session with Mr. Brian Dodge.

This year is a license renewal year so make sure you have entered your CE codes on the Hinman website for your credits and print out your CE certificates. If you attend the three membership meetings each of the two years between license renewal, you’ll have 18 hours of CE before even adding on the hours you can get at the March meeting in classes and table clinics.

Make sure that you are on a committee list for the March meeting, as it’s not only your obligation as a society member, but also your ticket to a celebration party at the Hinman meeting and the benefits of the annual meeting in June at the Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island. On that note, the Hinman room block at the Sonesta is now open for reservations.

I want to make sure to wish all of you a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving and holiday season.

Hinman 2016 is close and we plan for our guests to “Discover the Difference” that is Hinman. The difference is all about you, our members. No other meeting is put on by a more dedicated group of volunteers than ours. No other meeting is focused on hospitality and the comfort of our speakers and guests like this one. Our educational program is second to none and the money we raise is generously given to promote dental education. We are blessed with the finest staff that any organization could ask for.

Hinman 2016 promises to continue our tradition of excellence. Thanks to program chairs, Brad Greenway and Kate Robinson, we have an impressive lists of speakers and topics. We have tried to incorporate the theme of total health this year, focusing on systemic, as well as oral health. We have twenty new speakers and sixty-eight participation courses ranging from CAD/CAM and implants to cadaver

dissection and mini-residencies in geriatrics, pediatrics and cone beam technology. The ‘mini-residencies’ consist of several courses that will provide a deeper understanding of the topic.

Our effort to introduce students and new dentists to the private practice model will continue with the G.O.L.D. program. The full day course will feature several speakers addressing the challenges faced by students and recent graduates in this new age of dentistry. Lunch and an afternoon social time will be included.

A new S.I.L.V.E.R. program is on tap for Saturday morning. “Strategies to Implement that Lead to a Valuable, Enjoyable Retirement” is geared toward the more seasoned dentists looking to transition from full time practice to the next step.

Hinman 2016 will feature a full day dedicated to our lab tech partners as we further our goal of involving that important group.

All members must volunteer eight hours of time to accomplish our goals at Hinman 2016. Make sure you are on a committee so you can come to the GC&P reception on Thursday evening following the keynote address by Captain Richard Phillips. This year we will be

going to the new Delta Flight Museum for an evening of fellowship, food and fun.

“Hinman’s Night Out: Dancing in the Dome” will make its debut this year. We are combining the Friday night dentist reception and auxiliary party into one fun- filled evening at the Georgia Dome. The $10 ticket will entitle you to two drinks, food, prizes and fun activities. The Las Vegas style show band, “Starstruck” will entertain with a variety of popular music plus a 45 minute decades show sure to please all ages.

Our social program is going to be exceptional this year. My wife, Liz and Traci Dubin are planning a wide array of interesting and fun events. There will be lunch with the author, James Farmer, a tour of kitchens with the Atlanta Junior League, wine tasting, brews cruise and a “Top Golf” outing. It all promises to be loads of fun!

We want to create an experience for our attendees and to get them excited about coming back. The ADA meeting is coming in 2017 and 2016 is a great time for our attendees to “Discover the Difference” that is Hinman. I’m grateful to all of you who are going to make it happen.

All the best!

HINMAN NEEDS YOUR HELP!To continue to grow the Meeting each March, we need you, the members, to spread the word.

What do you tell your friends about the Hinman Meeting? Here’s some verbiage you can use to help sell the Meeting to your colleagues…

Opening question: “Have you ever been to the Hinman?”

If the answer is no, your response can be:

I’m a member of the Hinman Society. Our goal is to provide the best quality dental education. We invite the top speakers covering the most relevant topics to dentists. And none of the education is sponsored. Plus the people are really friendly. It’s a great way to stay up to date, fulfill the majority of your CE requirements, exchange information with other dentists, and have a lot of fun.

If the answer is yes: Are you attending this year?

If yes: That’s great. I hope you enjoy it. If you have any feedback, let me know and I’ll be sure to communicate it to our planning committee.

If no: Why not?

1) If it’s time away or you don’t like conferences…You can earn up to 21 credits in one weekend so it’s really not as time consuming as you think. And, you’ll learn so much with the lectures, hands-on courses and networking opportunities. We choose the most relevant topics and speakers. Plus none of our content is sponsored. If you are interested, I can get you a free ticket to the Friday night party. Just register at www.hinman.org and use this promo code when checking out: PARTY. It would be great to see you there!

2) If you’re concerned about the cost, ‘It’s only $170 for 3 full days of CE. They have great hotel discounts and you can obtain up to 21 credits in one weekend. If you are interested, I can get you a free ticket to the Friday night party. Just register at www.hinman.org and use this promo code when checking out: PARTY. It would be great to see you there!

When an attendee lists your name during registration as the member that referred them, you will receive one free ticket as well (while supplies last)!

Members, if you get other objections, call the Hinman office. We’ve got the answers. Thanks for promoting Hinman!

THE JOY OF GIVING by Stephanie Park, Convention Manager

As a member of the Hinman staff, I am fortunate to work with the Trustees and the southeast dental schools throughout the year. In determining scholarships and gift requests, we start by collecting requests from each of the schools, pulling together supporting data and presenting it to the Trustees for them to make educated decisions on gifting the excess revenue from the March Meeting.

Hinman members and staff plan all year long to make all of Hinman’s events successful and a great experience for everyone. We receive a number of wonderful, heartfelt thank-you cards, especially from the scholars. This year, however, I had the opportunity to join the Trustee Chairman, Dr. Chip Mohme, on a trip to Georgia Regents University to attend the dental school’s Welcome Back Assembly and Recognition Luncheon.

GRU gave us a tour of the campus, the new dental school and of the student work lab named after Dr. Hinman himself. During the scholarship luncheon, group after group handed out thousands of scholarship dollars. It was an honor to help represent Hinman that day. Drs. Mohme and Dubin handed out $200,000 in scholarships to 20 dental students.

Since 2003, I’ve been involved with the Hinman scholarship program and Trustee gift giving in one way or another. Over the

years, I have seen the list of scholar names and pictures of their faces but actually seeing each of them in person made Hinman’s giving so much more real and not just a name or number on a piece of paper.

It was moving to know that all of our hard work putting together the Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting benefitted

those students and many other students throughout the southeast.

Thank you to all of the Hinman members, volunteers, spouses and staff for your dedication that allows the Trustees to continue their amazing giving. It was truly a joy.

HINMAN’S ROAD TO SUCCESSby Wendy McGar, Exhibits Manager

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.”– Robert Frost

Hinman has a long history of taking the road less traveled. Dating back more than a hundred years, The Hinman Dental Society has diverged on its own path, and by its own virtue developed one of the of the top dental meetings in the country.

Much of the Meeting’s success is due to its ability to adapt to the changing times and yet still managing to keep its true identity of a quality educational product. With the introduction of commercial exhibits in 1942 and only 14 booths producing a revenue of just over $400, Hinman’s decision-makers proved even back then that they were willing to take a chance to breed success.

Today, Hinman’s technical exhibits produces more than $2.7 million dollars in revenue on its own which has enabled the Hinman Dental Society’s Trustees to continue their good works.

With the helpful success of technical exhibits and quality education, Hinman adds one more experience to the evolution of the meeting with the new Friday night event, HINMAN’S NIGHT OUT:

DANCING IN THE DOME. Hinman has once again proven it’s changing and

taking the road less traveled.

Each year, the excess revenues from the meeting are turned over to the Trustees. From the success of the 2015 meeting alone, the Trustees were able to touch the lives of more than 250 students with scholarships. These students are our future attendees, our future members and the future entrepreneurs and innovators in the dental community.

Help support the meeting. Save your purchases for the 2016 exhibit floor. Visit with our exhibitors, learn about the new and innovative products and services and help continue the success of the meeting because it “has made all the difference.”

• Check the committees list posted on the society website after November 1 (www.hinman.org/society) to see if you are signed up for a committee. We will automatically assign you to the committee that you worked last year. Committee service is required from all active Hinman members. Keep an eye out for committee correspondence via the email address that you have on file with Hinman. Contact Lynn in the Hinman office with any changes or to sign up.

• Registration for the 2016 convention begins December 7. Members and their spouses are automatically registered to attend the meeting. Look for an email from QMS to register for courses or visit our website.

HINMAN MEMBER CORNER

The Hinman Dental Society’s membership continues to grow. Every year, the Society welcomes a number of new members. Our newest members found out about the society through a variety of different ways, but are all excited about their membership and to represent an organization with such high standards and reputation. Some of our newest members share their past history with Hinman, dentistry and also what they enjoy doing in their spare time.

Dr. Celia Dunn Dr. Dunn is a graduate of MCG and has been attending Hinman meetings since 1989. She joined because she wanted to “give back and work for this very worthy organization.” In

her spare time, she enjoys gardening, theatre, travelling and the ballet. She was a ballet teacher before attending dental school.

Dr. Kevin FrazierDr. Frazier has been practicing for 31 years and the first Hinman meeting he attended was in 1996. He enjoys the chance to be part of the education and training of

future oral healthcare professionals. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling, especially as part of medical or dental mission trips, unusual pets, working out, reading fiction and following SEC Football and other sports.

Dr. Lisa MossDr. Moss has been practicing more than 26 years and the first Hinman meeting she attended was in 1981 as a part of a dental assisting class in her high school. In her spare time, she

enjoys spending time with her daughter, friends and family, volunteering on mobile dental units, working with young people in recovery and anything outdoors, including walks with her beagle.

Dr. Perrice MurrayDr. Murray was the recipient of a scholarship given by the Hinman trustees in 2012. She was so grateful for the gift at the time and impressed by the generosity of the society when

attending the Hinman meeting as a student at no cost. Dr. Jim Jordan has been a mentor to her and convinced her to join the society. In her spare time she enjoys working out, a nice walk, cooking, traveling and spending time with family.

Dr. Maheshvar PatelDr. Patel has been practicing for over five years and attended his first Hinman meeting in 2010. He enjoys painting, golf, barbequing, cheering for Atlanta sports teams and

spending time with friends and family in his free time. He takes joy in having the ability to give people the confidence to smile and enjoys educating patients about oral health and their overall health.

Dr. Vanessa PhanDr. Phan has been practicing for ten years and had a positive impression of the society from her attendance at the Hinman meeting and speaking with other members. In her spare

time, she enjoys dancing. Her greatest rewards in dentistry come from continually expanding her knowledge and skills to benefit patients.

Dr. Ayesha RahmanDr. Rahman learned about the society in 1999 and has been practicing since 2002. She was influenced by members Drs. Ray Davis, Jr., Nathan Shapiro and Raymond Johnson to

become a member of the society. She spends her free time with her husband and three children, enjoying the outdoors, music, cooking and entertaining.

Dr. Ross RickoffDr. Rickoff attended his first Hinman meeting in 2011 as a resident and has been practicing for two years as an endodontist. He enjoys Duke basketball, grilling out and spending time

with his wife and new daughter outside of dentistry. The most rewarding part of dentistry to him is being able to use his knowledge and abilities to put an anxious person at ease and relieve their pain.

Dr. Alda Underwood-HallDr. Underwood-Hall has been practicing dentistry for 31 years and has known about Hinman since dental school in the 1980s. She enjoys playing the piano, travelling, reading and

going to concerts in her spare time. The most rewarding aspect of dentistry to her is the intimacy of relationships that one develops within the context of providing quality healthcare, which she describes as, “magical.”

Dr. Beau UpshawBefore dental school, Dr. Upshaw worked as a lab technician and his boss took him to the Hinman Meeting in 2009. He has been practicing since 2014 and wanted to jump

right in and join the society. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, working out, cooking and playing the drums. He’s also a big UGA and Atlanta Falcons fan. For Dr. Upshaw, making patients happy is the most rewarding part of being a dentist.

Page 8: SEPTEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING

The Official Publication of the Hinman Dental Society

Hinman History Series Part 2: HISTORY OF THE THOMAS P. HINMAN DENTAL MEETINGMuch of the initial motivation of the small Fifth District Dental Society back in the early 1900s to provide excellent continuing education for dentistry is attributed to Dr. Thomas P. Hinman. His personal drive for education carried him around the country to attend and teach courses in dentistry. Dr. Hinman attended the Chicago Midwinter Clinic in 1911 and was impressed by Dr. Charles Mayo’s lecture. He pondered how to share the information learned with his fellow dentists. Dr. Hinman reached out to the Atlanta Dental Society and Georgia State Dental Society and presented the idea of a major dental education meeting held in the south to present information he learned while attending other formal programs. The idea was accepted and planning for the first meeting began with Dr. Hinman as chairman.

Dr. Hinman set the tone of the meeting as a distinctive business-like event, giving lifeblood to his motto, “Devotion to detail is the secret of success.” There is debate if the first meeting occurred in 1911 or 1913, but the quality education and hospitality of the meeting were established early on and have continued through the years. To e n c o u r a g e better learning, class sizes were limited and hands on, and clinicians were hosted by a local committee. Dr. Hinman insisted on complete order during lectures, including no smoking, no audience discussion and deflection

of irrelevant questions. If anyone had to leave the room during a lecture, they would need to remain outside. This did not deter dentists, rather they clamored for the restricted invitations to the event. The clinic was cancelled in 1931, the year of Dr. Hinman’s death. Later, it was

voted then to rename the clinic in his honor, and it became the Hinman Midwinter Clinic.

Commercial exhibits were first allowed at the meeting in 1941, and there were 14 booths at the 1942 meeting. The meeting met up to 1943 in the Biltmore Hotel. It was moved in 1944 to the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium, where it had over 40 exhibit booths the first year. The 1940s opened up the meeting to anyone; it was no longer by invitation only and social programs were also introduced to the program. Attendance was

opened to hygienists and assistants in the 1950s. Table clinics were introduced and attendance grew to around 1,000 dentists. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 1962, and included the recent innovation of a closed circuit lecture. Over 3,000 were in attendance this year. In 1965, the meeting moved to the new Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel as the meeting grew larger. Well known figures such as Joan Rivers, Ann Landers, Tom Brokaw, Paul Harvey, Bryant Gumbel and Bob Hope have performed at the Clinic over the years.

In 1972 over 8,500 attended the meeting and shuttle bus service began. This year, a Tour of Dental Offices and the Hobby Show began. The meeting added the Atlanta Hilton as a meeting site in 1977 and changed the location to the new larger Marriott Marquis in 1986. In 1991, the meeting made its first move to a convention center, the Atlanta Inforum’s Merchandise & Apparel Mart. The most recent move was in 1998 when the meeting moved to the Georgia World Congress Center.

In 2015, nearly 22,000 dental professionals participated in the 103rd meeting at the Georgia World Congress Center and Omni Hotel at CNN Center. The exhibits program included representatives from nearly 400 companies occupying more than 800 booths. Attendees were housed in 25 hotels in downtown, midtown, and Buckhead. They traveled from all 50 states and as far away as Japan and New Zealand.

Today, the focus is still on providing the best possible continuing dental education, not just for the dentists but also, the whole dental team. The program addresses the needs of general dentists, specialists, hygienists, assistants, front office staff and students.

Lecture Topic:

STEVEN M. HART, D.M.D.

Reducing Restorative Frustrations & Implant Failures

Whether for natural teeth or implants, crown seating appointments often do not go as smoothly as anticipated. Even after cementation, a restoration may develop a problem down the road that seems perplexing. At best, there are frustrations with having to adjust high occlusion on a new crown. At worst, having to replace a crown or losing an implant is a possible outcome. This helpful presentation will look at tooth versus implant biomechanics, suggested design features for crowns, and factors that contribute to “high” occlusal contacts on crown restorations at time of placement.
