GreetingsI

Welcome to the fall issue of Happenings. I hope by now you’ve

noticed that with each issue, A&E has made small changes here

and there, like: full-color and vibrant covers; an updated Know

& Go Calendar with color key coding; developing each issue

around a theme; and expanding the content by a few pages.

Well, this issue marks yet another change – the inclusion of

the Arts and Education Council’s “2014 Annual Report to the Community.”

In years past, the annual report lived as a separate publication and didn’t always

get into the hands of as many people as we would like. So this Happenings is

dedicated to reporting back to you – our loyal friends and contributors – the

returns on your investments in arts and arts education through your gift to A&E.

One Gift. A Million Returns! Yep. That’s a bold statement. And we built a bold

campaign around it. And we’ll prove it. Flip to page 10 to meet some of the organ-

izations A&E supports as well as a few of the millions of people positively

impacted by A&E’s efforts. Plus, we’ve included some great infographics that

quickly and clearly illustrate how the arts play a critical role in academic achieve-

ment or economic impact. Like this one:

More residents and tourists enjoy and attend arts activities each year than all

three St. Louis professional sports teams – combined. That statistic is a stagger-

ing validation of the arts’ importance and relevance to our region.

The Arts and Education Council staff and board feel very fortunate that you

entrust A&E to invest your contributions wisely and for maximum effect. St. Louis

is a wonderful place to live, learn, work and play due to the enviable strength and

vitality of a vibrant arts scene – and that’s thanks to you!

As the leaves outside change

color, the vibrancy of the

autumn season can be felt

inside at so many St. Louis area arts

organizations. Fall signals the start of

the 2015-16 arts season, with myriad

visual art, music, dance and theater

events to enjoy. Here are some of the

early highlights:

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis

kicks off its 49th season with main

stage productions that run the gamut

from politics to British royalty to the

Negro baseball leagues. The curtain

lifts Sept. 9 with the 2014 Tony Award-

winning play, “All The Way,” running

through Oct. 4. This political drama

looks behind the scenes of Lyndon B.

Johnson’s tumultuous first year in

office as he navigates the escalation of

the Vietnam War and balances his

opposing interests of launching the

landmark civil rights bill and winning

re-election. Next up is the psychologi-

cal thriller “Angel Street,” which runs

Oct. 14 - Nov. 8, followed by the

swashbuckling prequel to “Peter Pan,”

known as “Peter and the Starcatcher,”

Dec. 2-27. For more information, visit

repstl.org.

Mustard Seed Theatre presents

“The Amish Project” Aug. 28 – Sept.

13. This fictional story explores a

schoolhouse shooting in an Amish

community and the path of forgive-

ness and compassion forged in its

wake. For more information, visit

mustardseedtheatre.com.

STAGES St. Louis lets it all hang out

in “The Full Monty,” Sept. 4 – Oct. 4,

a musical comedy about six unem-

ployed steelworkers who hatch a plan

to make some much-needed cash

after their wives go wild for a group of

male strippers. In the process, they

discover the importance of family,

friendship and the very human desire

to live life to the fullest. For more

information, visit stagesstlouis.org.

The New Jewish Theatre opens its

season with a perennial Neil Simon

favorite, “The Sunshine Boys,” Oct.

8 - Nov. 1. The play focuses on two

vaudevillians who performed together

for 40 years but haven’t spoken in

over a decade. When CBS Television

invites the team to reunite for a com-

edy retrospective, they grudgingly

agree, thus igniting a flood of memo-

ries, miseries and laughs. For more

information, visit newjewishtheatre.org.

If you haven’t experienced a COCA

hip-hop dance performance, Oct. 2 is

your chance with “wUNDER Night in

wUNDERland.” This show encourages

the entire family to fall down the rab-

bit hole for a night of fun, food and

fantastical characters, including a

chance to try out your own hip-hop

moves during a COCA group dance

lesson. For more information, visit

cocastl.org.

Dance St. Louis kicks off its 50th

Anniversary Season Oct. 2-3 with the

world-renowned Paul Taylor Dance

Company, whose seminal choreogra-

phy draws from influential moments in

American cultural history, such as war,

The St.Louis Fall Arts Scene

spirituality, sexuality, morality and

mortality. Roughly 120 singers, 60

musicians and 40 dancers take the

stage Nov. 6-8 to perform German

composer Carl Orff’s “Carmina

Burana,” featuring the Nashville Ballet,

University of Missouri-St. Louis

“wUNDER Night in wUNDERland” at COCA.

Momix in Alchemia performs as part of

Dance St. Louis's 50th Anniversary Season.

tion, visit dancestlouis.org.

The Sheldon Arts Foundation

offers an eclectic performance line-up,

sation Jake Shimabukuro (Oct. 16);

Grammy-nominated harmony duo The

Milk Carton Kids (Nov. 4); bossa nova

pianist and singer Eliane Elias (Nov.

21) and the mischievous John Waters

performing his critically acclaimed

one-man show (Dec. 3). For more

information, visit thesheldon.org.

Jazz St. Louis also has a season

filled with musical heavy-hitters,

including Jazz St. Louis @20 featuring

Christian McBride, Cyrus Chestnut,

Gregory Hutchinson, Russell Malone,

Terell Stafford and Tim Warfield (Sept.

23-26); the Yellowjackets (Oct. 7-10);

Dave Holland, Kevin Eubanks and Eric

Harland (Oct. 21-24); Pancho Sanchez

and his Latin Jazz band (Nov. 4-7) and

Jeremy Davenport (Nov. 27-28). For

more information, visit jazzstl.org.

In addition to frequent classical

music performances, the St. Louis

Symphony will host “Hoot & Howl at

Powell” Oct. 25, a Halloween spook-

tacular concert for the whole family,

featuring “Night on Bald Mountain”

from “Fantasia” and John Williams’

“Hedwig’s Theme” from the “Harry

Potter” films. The Symphony will also

celebrate the 30th anniversary of the

movie “Back to the Future” which will

play on screen while Symphony musi-

cians perform the score live at Powell

Hall Oct. 1 – Nov. 1. For more informa-

tion, visit stlsymphony.org.

arts. More than a dozen local arts

groups will join forces to present exhi-

bitions related to fiber art Aug. 28 –

Oct. 25. For more information, visit

Laumeier Sculpture Park presents

an exhibition by Raqs Media

Collective, a New Delhi-based cooper-

ative with a politically charged artistic

and theoretical practice. They will

create a work interpreting audience

reponses to the prompt “If the World

is a Fair Place Then, …” The final piece

will invoke references to the early

history of the ecology movement in the

Himalayan region of Northern India,

alongside the course histories and

traces of Native American histories

in our area (Oct. 16 – Feb. 14, 2016).

Finally, the 24th annual Whitaker

St. Louis International Film Festival,

presented by Cinema St. Louis, takes

place Nov. 5-15 with dozens of short

subject, narrative features and docu-

mentaries screening throughout the

10-day festival. For more information,

Rick Dildine, artistic and execu-

tive director of Shakespeare

Festival St. Louis (an A&E

Operating Grant recipient), tells a ter-

rific story about how he was first intro-

duced to art - and Shakespeare -

as a youngster.

Growing up on a crop farm in north-

east Arkansas, Dildine says there was

“little-to-no arts in the region, much

less theater.”

While in eighth grade, Dildine saw a

TV commercial advertising the touring

production of “Cats” coming to the

Orpheum Theater in Memphis, that

city’s equivalent of our Fox Theatre,

about two hours from his home. He

begged his father to let him see the

show. “My father’s response was, ‘We’ve

got cats, cows and chickens. Why do

you want to pay to see some cats?”

A year later, his mother pulled him

aside and said, “I’ve been saving up for a

year and bought us season tickets to the

Orpheum Theater in Memphis.” Dildine

and his mother began to make the trip

once a month to see live stage shows.

“Driving there, we’d talk about what

we were going to see and listen to

some of the music,” Dildine recalled.

“On the drive back, we’d have a conver-

sation about what we saw, what we

thought, what we learned.

“To me, that’s so much a part of

what theater is about – the conversa-

tion in the car ride home. That’s the

kind of theater I want to make. The arts,

be it visual, music or theater, can and

should trigger conversation and dia-

logue. The role of the arts in society is to

ask ourselves who we are and what we

want to be. The arts also tell future gen-

erations what was important us. The arts

help record the history of mankind.”

Around the same time he and his

mom were going to the Memphis

Orpheum, Dildine’s English teacher

promised bonus points if students read

over Christmas break.

“So I went to the library and tried to

find someone who had a lot of work,”

he said. “I ended up in the section of

library where the author’s last name

started with ‘S.’ After the break, I went

to my teacher and told her I read eight

pieces. She was shocked and asked,

‘Who did you read?’ I told her I had no

idea Danielle Steele had so many books.”

That’s when his teacher suggested

he try someone else whose last name

started with “S” and gave him a copy of

“A Midsummer’s Night Dream.” By the

time he finished reading the play he was

smitten, and his longtime love affair

with Shakespeare had begun.

Dear Friends:

The Arts and Education Council (A&E) is pleased to

report continued, strong growth for our organization

in 2014 in both operations and in funding for the arts

community in St. Louis. This 2014 Annual Report to the

Community highlights not only A&E’s successes, but the

continued evolution of arts and arts education outreach

efforts by the nearly 70 organizations supported by gener-

ous contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations

and community partners.

In 2014, A&E worked hard to ensure your contributions

were maximized. For example, every dollar A&E expended

on fundraising generated $5.60 in contributed revenue.

That’s a 560% return and marks an 8% increase in ROI over

2013. Additionally, the national Cost per Dollar Raised non-

profit average is 20 cents1. A&E continues to operate under

that national average, expending only 18 cents per every

dollar raised. A&E lowered its annual Cost per Dollar Raised

average by 5% in 2014 compared to 2013. In short, we want

to assure you of how seriously the staff and board of A&E

take our role as stewards of your investments in our arts

community which, in turn, make our region a wonderful

place to live, learn, work and play.

As Mayor Francis G. Slay said in 2013, “A&E does more

than fund great art and art education programs. It also

drives positive change in our community.” Throughout this

2014 Report, you’ll find lots of great graphics illustrating

various ways in which the arts impact people and our region

– starting with the brilliant illustration on the previous two

pages by St. Louis creative thought firm, Kendeo, which

highlights the arts impact on jobs, the area economy, and

attendance.

The past twelve months have comprised a difficult time in

St. Louis’ history on many levels – but on each of those levels

the arts and arts education opportunities can and do play

positive, creative roles in bridging divides, unifying people

and moving our community forward to a better future.

Thank you for your continued support for the Arts and

Education Council! Together, we keep art happening.

Centene Center for Arts and Education

The Centene Center for Arts and

Education is an arts incubator

owned and operated by the Arts

and Education Council. The build-

ing and its tenants serve as a dynamic cultural hub for the

arts in our community. Through the leadership gift of the

Centene Charitable Foundation, the Centene Center provides

arts organizations access to state-of-the-art affordable office

space plus rehearsal, performance, meeting and event space

for sixteen arts organizations. The low cost rent and services

allow our tenants to put their resources where they are most

needed and grow their organizations.

In 2014, the Centene Center saw two of its tenants grow

and move to new offices: Jazz St. Louis opened its Harold

and Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz, a new state-of-the art

performance venue and jazz education center, and St. Louis

ArtWorks announced its expansion and move to a new build-

ing in the Delmar Loop East.

Arts Leadership and Management Academy

The Arts Leadership and Management

Academy (ALMA), is an ongoing pro-

gram offering professional development

workshops to individuals employed at

arts organizations. The sessions focus on a variety of topics

designed to build capacity in nonprofit organizations including:

grant writing; fundraising strategies; financial leadership; board

development; and creating social and digital media strategies.

Additionally, the Academy is home to the Executive Directors

Roundtable, a professionally-led program targeted to leaders

of arts and cultural organizations. The focus of the roundtable

is to support executive directors with exchanges and resource

sharing through professionally facilitated peer learning.

The Academy also hosts Arts Marketers, a program geared to

providing tools, information and idea sharing to marketing staff.

ALMA is presented in collaboration with the Nonprofit Services

Center and generously funded by Wells Fargo Advisors.

Crowdfunding

In today’s changing philanthropic landscape, crowdfunding

has become a powerful new fundraising tool. Launched in

November of 2013 with a lead contribution from the Arthur

and Helen Baer Charitable Foundation, A&E's crowdfunding

site has since raised over $105,000 for more than 40 local

arts projects and organizations.

Cultural organizations funded by A&E use the site for projects

that need funding up to $10,000 such as musical instruments

for children, costumes for a theater production, or the devel-

opment of an online music academy. Visitors to the site direct

their donations to projects that interest them.

the Year); and Thelma and David Steward (Excellence in Philanthropy). The event was

co-chaired by Lynne and Jim Turley and included performances by the IN UNISON

Chorus, directed by Kevin McBeth with Henry Palkes at piano, Antonio Douthit-Boyd

Community Engagement

Broadway theater director Charles Randolph-Wright was

coming to the Fabulous Fox Theatre and bringing his critically-

acclaimed Motown the Musical with him. The popular production

was coming to St. Louis in the wake of the Ferguson unrest

just before the Grand Jury announcement and Randolph-

Wright wanted to bring a positive experience to an aching

community. With the help of the Arts and Education Council,

Randolph-Wright arranged for nearly 200 Normandy and

Ferguson-Florissant School District students to attend a

matinee performance of Motown with complimentary tickets.

Following the performance, the students, cast and Randolph-

Wright walked over to A&E’s Centene Center for Arts and

Education for a meet and greet. Randolph-Wright and the

Motown cast spoke to students about the power of the arts

– to heal, overcome, and uplift – especially during times of

trouble and uncertainty; and offered personal testimony about

how the arts impacted them individually with opportunities

they otherwise may never have had. Ultimately, the meet and

greet ended with both cast and students up on their feet,

clapping, singing, dancing and laughing…just what these brave,

young people needed.
