5 1921. Into service on the Great Eastern Railway. 5 1921 February. Believed used initially on ‘Hook Continental’ and ‘Antwerp Continental’ boat

trains. 5 1923 August. Rebranded to ‘Third Class’ following the withdrawal of ‘Second Class’

facilities and renumbered to ‘CAR NO.56’. 5 1939 Withdrawn from service. 5 1944 Sold to the LNER and became Dormitory coach LNER 960821 and allocated

to Great Eastern operations, and fitted with sixteen bunks and a coal stove. 5 New Use for Old Pullman Cars. One of the many problems that the second world war brought is that of providing accommodation for permanent way staff who have to work away from their homes on repair of existing and construction of new works. Staff may well find themselves many miles from town or village, and, even if near an inhabited locality, the problem of obtaining food and accommodation is one of utmost difficulty. To overcome these difficulties, peculiar to the war-time working, the L.N.E.R. had converted eight six wheeled coaches and six Pullman cars, which have been allocated to the various districts throughout the system. A further six Pullmans have been similarly converted, being painted grey with white lettering. The six-wheeled coaches provided accommodation for eight men each, and the Pullman cars for sixteen. Each vehicle is complete with beds, wash basins, tables, lockers, etc, and carries supplies of bedding, cooking and cleaning utensils, lamps, and, indeed, everything to make the coach entirely self-supporting. A member of the Working staff acts as attendant and undertakes the cooking which is done on coal stoves, and he also sees to the general tidiness of the temporary home. The facilities afforded by these vehicles proved of immense value. Car Identity: Class: Introduced: Type of Car: Withdrawn: L.N.E.R. No: BR Disposal: CAR No.2 (56). Third. 02/1921. Kitchen. 1938. 970200. Extant January 1971.

1970’s East Coast Pullman Railwayana - Mike Couzens. I read this in Coupe News Special Edition No.4 THE TEES TYNE PULLMAN “1972 ECML Pullman services allocated motifs to identify each service; these will be in the form of steward’s lapel badges, window stickers, menu covers and ticket barrier boards” and was hooked. I scoured various railwayana dealers and eBay for some of these items and the collection has grown from there, some of which is now on display in a cabinet on our landing. This though has led to several questions that I am hoping some of you who read this marvelous publication may be able to answer. Lapel Badges.

Not Seen

There are two distinct types of lapel badges, a cheaper plastic sticker on a thin metal badge type (top row) and a finer quality enamelled type (bottom row). This has led to two questions: 1. Which type came first? 2. Does an enamelled version of the Tees Tyne Pullman badge exist?

Window/Carriage Labels.

Here again there are several different types, they obviously differ for Up and Down Services but there are other interesting variations and therefore questions: I have only seen The Tees Tyne Pullman Window Labels with the “via” above the intermediate stations, so as this pullman was withdrawn some two years before the other two services, I am assuming that the Window Labels with the “via” are the earlier type, can anyone confirm this please? The Yorkshire Pullman Label F and the Hull Pullman label in the right hand colomn both have additional stations, I assume this is due to a timetable change or maybe weekend workings, if anyone has any details please let me know. Ticket Wallet.

The original quote from Coupe News that started all this “1972 ECML Pullman services allocated motifs to identify each service; these will be in the form of steward’s lapel badges, window stickers, menu covers and ticket barrier boards”, makes no mention of Ticket Wallets but in the last couple of months I have acquired two Tees Tyne Pullman examples. Do these exist for the Yorkshire and Hull Pullmans? Thanking you in advance for any help you may be able to give, Mike.

A Real Railway Children Story - Mike Couzens. During the Final Run of the Yorkshire Pullman 5th May 1976, on arrival at Wakefield Westgate a young boy rushed on to the train and gave the crew a card, it read “Thank you so much to all the staff of the Yorkshire Pullman. It was very nice of you to wave every day for the last 10 years. It brought joy to all the children” Chris Kelly, Steward, opened the card and said, “It makes it all worthwhile”. It turns out that the crew of the Yorkshire Pullman had been waving to the children that lived by the railway approaching Wakefield for the past 10 years and the children, Christine and Jonathan, had also sent the staff gifts of sweets and Christmas cards and when they were away on holiday they left a message in the window to tell the staff that they were away and also sent them Postcards.

NRM York - Parlour First TOPAZ following external restoration into SECR Lake livery and lining. We learn from the Locomotive Magazine, Vol. 16, 1910, pages 79-81, issue of 15 April, that the running of Pullman cars on the SECR had been inaugurated by the provision of six vehicles of two types, parlour and buffet, one of each being used on a train. It was understood that it was intended at a later date to run some trains entirely composed of similar vehicles.

The entrance vestibules and end portions of the corridors were panelled in mahogany, the floor being covered with special rubber tiling. The lavatories were likewise panelled in mahogany and the floors covered with special rubber tiling. The exteriors of the cars were finished a light "lake" [i.e. glossy red-brown - Author] and tastefully lined with gold; the roofs were painted white and the underframes and bogies black. Each car had been designed in a different style and the wall panellings were made up of different woods, so that each car might have a character peculiar to itself. The name of the car was indicated externally on each side of the body and inside in the vestibules. The covings and ceilings were formed of a fibrous plaster material decorated with enriched mouldings, simple ornaments on the flat portions and with cups in which the electric ceiling lamps were ensconced. The finishing colour was light cream. Table standard lights were of brass gilded by the Mercurial process; the door handles, basket racks, ventilators and other fittings were of chased and gilded brass. The blinds were of a very rich green silk damask with a flower design.

SECR Pullmans cars at Bricklayers Arms shortly after delivery in 1910.

The Corunna parlour car was panelled with fine wainscot oak, richly inlaid with holly wood softly shaded in the style of the Renaissance. The carpet was of deep velvet pile, crimson in colour, and the chairs were covered with Renaissance velvet of a colour to harmonise.

The Florence buffet car had finishings of rich mahogany with panels of Spanish curled veneer, quartered and inlaid with satinwood marquetry on the panels, friezes and pilasters in the Georgian style. It had a carpet of r ich green velvet pile and the armchairs were covered with green morocco. The Savona parlour car was treated with finely marked satinwood with quartered panels, inlaid with green and red floral decoration in the style of Louis XVI. The carpet was a rich red velvet pile and the armchairs were upholstered in a red velvet of "Fleur-de-Lys" design. The Valencia buffet car was panelled with mahogany of fiddle-back pattern and of a rich rosy colour, quartered and richly inlaid with satinwood floral decorations in the style of the period of Louis XVI. The carpet was of rich green velvet pile and the chairs were covered in green morocco. The Clementina parlour car used wood of finely mottled pear tree of a rosy hue, inlaid with holly that was delicately shaded in an "Adamesque" style. The carpet was of rich blue velvet pile and the chairs were covered with blue velvet to suit. The Sorrento buffet car had a framework of mahogany with satine quartered panels, inlaid with satinwood, and green decorations in the Louis XV style. The carpet was of deep red velvet pile and the chairs were upholstered in red morocco. The Railway Gazette, January-June 1910, pages 308-9, advised that the cars were built by Birmingham C. & W. Co. Ltd., Smethwick. It also noted that from Monday 21 March one Parlour and one Buffet Car would run between London and Dover in each of the following express services daily:- London: Charing Cross 9.00 a.m. Victoria 11.00 a.m. Dover Pier 3.20 p.m. Dover Pier 5.20 p.m. An article, entitled "Pullman Cars on the SECR", by W . T . P e r k i n s co v e r e d t h e s a m e gr o u n d i n t h e R a i l w a y Magazine, Vol.26, January-June 1910, pages 409-412.

More Pullman Cars on the SECR. The Railway Gazette, July-December 1910, page 520, issue of 11 November, recorded that the popularity of the Pullman cars on the London-Dover boat train services had induced the SECR to extend the provision of this development in passenger comfort. Beginning on the following Monday Pullman restaurant cars would be run on the 2.20 p.m. down and 9.5 p.m. up Folkestone Continental Expresses and passengers by Pullman would be able to obtain light refreshments en route. The new cars were similar in design and equipment to the other Pullmans on the SECR boat trains already fully described in the magazine's columns. Like the earlier cars they had been furnished throughout by Messrs. W.S. Laycock, Ltd., of Sheffield and London, and built at the works of the Birmingham R.C. & W. Co. Ltd.

In the Railway Gazette, January-June 1911, page 190, issue of 24 February, it was intimated that owing to the success of the Pullman cars on the SECR, a new service of these cars was inaugurated on the previous Monday in connection with the 10 a.m. Continental train from Charing Cross (via Boulogne) to Paris. On page 303 of the same volume of the Railway Gazette it was stated that the Pullman Cars running in certain Continental services between London and Dover and London and Folkestone having been much appreciated by the travelling public, it had been decided that, commencing 1 April, for the convenience of passengers to and from Holland, Germany and Northern Europe, a Pullman Car would be run in the 8.35 p.m. down Continental express from Victoria to Queenborough Pier and, also, commencing 2 April, in the 6.25 a.m. up Continental express to Victoria from Queenborough Pier. Dinner would be served in the Pullman Car running in the 8.35 p.m. down train and breakfast in the Pullman Car running in the 6.25 a.m. up train. These improved arrangements would certainly add to the popularity and convenience of the service. There was a paragraph entitled "Sea Baths in SECR Pullman" in the Railway Gazette, July-December 1911, page 477, issue of 3 November. It recorded that owing to heavy seas breaking over Dover Admiralty Pier Extension, on Thursday of the previous week, a Pullman Car on the 1 o'clock boat express was partly wrecked and two registered baggage cars were damaged. The furniture in the Pullman Car (Seville ref T Bye) was said to have been "all afloat" for a time. Cosmo Bonsor, Shamrock and Emerald Pullman Cars. The Railway Magazine, Vol.30, January-June 1912, pages 521-2, described how the entrance vestibules, corridor and lavatory were panelled in mahogany. The floors of these portions were covered with interlocking black and green rubber tiling, the ceilings being finished in a light cream colour. The total seating capacity of the car was 19 and table accommodation was provided for each person. Decoration was carried out in richly inlaid figured mahogany, the inlay being in delicate and refined satinwood of Pergolesi treatment. Chairs were upholstered in green morocco and finished with gilt nails. Beautifully veneered on the tops, which were protected by plate glass, the tables were provided with tastefully decorated Ormolu standard lamps. Wall brackets, basket racks, door handles and all mountings had been specially designed to harmonise with the general style of the car. The ceilings were of a fibrous material, with tastefully enriched mouldings and ornamentations, the electric ceiling lamps being ensconced in recessed cups. A new feature was the addition of an electric lamp over each entrance door, which, by the aid of a reflector, threw a light upon the steps. The Railway Gazette, July-December 1911, pages 487 & 510-513, had a reference to the exterior of the car, which was finished in the standard SECR lake colour [i.e. glossy red-brown], tastefully lined with gold. The name of the car Cosmo Bonsor and the Pullman Company's coat of arms were indicated on each side in the usual way. The underframe and bogies were finished black. The Railway & Travel Monthly, Vol.5, July-December 1912, page 40, also mentioned that the exterior of the Pullman cars on the SECR was finished in the standard light maroon [i.e. glossy red-brown] of that railway's carriage stock, with lining and lettering in gold. The accompanying article on pages 38-41 "Pullman Cars in the London Continental Services" contained photographs of Cosmo Bonsor, Shamrock & Emerald.

The Railway Magazine, Vol.32, January-June 1913, page 109, commented that the SECR had recently instituted on the boat trains a service of Pullman Cars, which were so extensively patronised that it was no uncommon sight to see three of them coupled together on the more important services. Seville, Alicante and Leghorn Pullman Cars. On pages 162-3 of Railway Magazine, Vol.32, January-June 1913, it was observed that three new Pullman cars were, in the previous December, put into service on the SECR. They were the buffet car Seville and the parlour cars Alicante and Leghorn. All were engaged in the extremely popular 11 a.m. service from Victoria to Paris via Dover and Calais. Entrance vestibules, corridors and lavatories were panelled in mahogany and the floors of the same were covered with interlocking black and white rubber tiling. The buffet car Seville was decorated in fine mahogany, with panels of curl veneer, enriched by shaded inlays in the Georgian style. Fitted with plate glass tops the tables were of the same wood as the panelling. Mahogany chairs were upholstered in a rich tone of green leather and the floor was covered with a deep pile green carpet. In the parlour car Alicante, panelling in peartree with holly inlays in the style of Louis XV was adopted. The chairs were covered in fine blue velours and the carpets offered harmonious covering. In the parlour car Leghorn grey sycamore appeared in the panelling, inlaid with richly shaded white wood. The style was of the Louis XVI period. The chairs were upholstered in a beautiful tone of crimson colour and the carpet corresponded in tone. The Railway Gazette, January-June 1913, page 61, added that the ceilings of the three cars were finished a light cream colour. The exteriors of the cars were finished in the standard SECR lake colour [i.e. glossy red-brown], tastefully lined with gold, the names of the cars and the Pullman Company's coat-of-arms being indicated on each side in the usual way. The underframes and bogies were finished black. On pages 136-8 it was indicated that the panelling motif in Seville was oval in form with shaded festoons of flowers and that the green leather chairs were finished with gilt nails. The Locomotive Magazine, Vol.19, 1913, page 89, noted that the three cars had been built at the Works of Messrs. Cravens, Ltd., at Sheffield. "From Brussels to London in Six Hours". The Railway Gazette, January-June 1914, page 614, described how Mr. Davison Dalziel, M.P. for Brixton, made his journey from Brussels to the House of Commons in order to take part in the division on the second reading of the Welsh Disestablishment Bill. The special SECR train in which the journey was performed between the Admiralty Pier, Dover and the metropolis consisted of two bogie brakes (second and third) and one Pullman Car (Ruby) drawn by engine No.36. The time on the journey from Dover Pier to Charing Cross was 1 hr. 23 mins. and the average speed from Dover Town to Charing Cross was 57.29 m.p.h.

1921 & 1922. Padua, Milan, Calais, Palmyra, Portia and Rosalind 12-Wheel Pullman cars. The Railway Magazine, Vol.48, January-June 1921, pages 256-7, commented that the cars were painted on the outside with body colour of lake [i.e. glossy red-brown] with gold lettering, the name of the car and the Pullman Company's coat-of-arms further adding to the excellent style of the exterior finish. There were three parlour cars and three parlour & kitchen cars. The parlour cars were named respectively Padua, Milan and Calais. Of these the first was panelled in inlaid mahogany in the Sheraton style, the carpets and upholstery being light green. Milan was finished in pearwood to Greek design, with saxe blue carpets and upholstery, whilst Calais was panelled in cherry wood with the Persian style of decoration, matched by red carpets and upholstery. The parlour & kitchen cars were all panelled in mahogany. Of these Palmyra was decorated in the Adams style with blue carpets and blue leather upholstery, Portia (Sheraton) being finished in red and Rosalind (Hepplewhite) in green. The Railway Gazette, January-June 1921, pages 131-3 & 136-7, noted that the six cars, fitted with six-wheel bogies, were built by the Birmingham R.C. & W. Co. Ltd. It also advised that the decorative scheme was enhanced by the provision of oval windows of coloured glass set in brass frames. The same ground was covered by the Railway & Travel Monthly, Vol.22, January-June 1921, pages 181-4. Anaconda, Coral, Elmira, Erminie, Formosa and Maid of Kent, First Class Pullman Cars. The Locomotive Magazine, Vol.27, 1921, pages 335-6, proclaimed that so great had been the popular appreciation of the Pullman Car trains put into service by the SECR, that it had been found desirable to provide a further series of the sumptuous vehicles. The latest to be delivered were six in number and had been built in accordance with the Pullman Car Company's specifications to the designs of the constructors Messrs. Clayton Wagons Ltd. These cars differed from preceding types in having four-wheeled, instead of six-wheeled, bogies and steel underframes, by which-changes a considerable reduction in the tare weight had been effected. A pleasing note of variety was introduced by the adoption of individual decorative schemes for the interior of each vehicle, though the outside finish for all was the exceedingly handsome lake [i.e. glossy red-brown] then forming the standard SECR coach colour [for Pullmans] and certain internal features were also shared in common. Amongst these might be mentioned the ceilings, which were finished dead white. The vestibules, lavatories and corridors were panelled with selected mahogany and the floors were covered with interlocking black and white rubber tiling, except those of the kitchen and pantry compartments, for which "Decolite" was employed.

The Railway Gazette, July-December 1921, page 885, described the interiors of the six cars as follows:- Anaconda was panelled in mahogany and pommele and tastefully inlaid, the chairs being upholstered in green leather and the floor having green carpets. Coral was panelled in mahogany and satine and tastefully inlaid, the chairs being upholstered in red leather and the floors having red carpets. Elmira was panelled in plum-pudding mahogany and tastefully inlaid, the chairs being upholstered in green leather and the floors having green carpets. Erminie had a really beautiful effect obtained by panelling in peartree wood and having an extraordinary amount of figuring with dark inlays of a special design. Formosa was panelled in mahogany and satine and tastefully inlaid, the chairs being upholstered in red leather and the floors having red carpets. Maid of Kent was panelled in curl mahogany and tastefully inlaid, the chairs being upholstered in green leather, the floors have green carpets. Post WW1 Pullman Car Services. The Railway & Travel Monthly, Vol-23, July-December 1921, pages 141-2, related that the Pullman Car Co., had arranged with the SECR for a Pullman only express to Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate on Sundays. The train was designated "The Thanet Pullman Limited". It left Victoria at 10.10 a.m. and ran non-stop to Margate West in 90 minutes. The train was composed of six cars, Sorrento, Ruby, Topaz, Leghorn, Daphne and Corunna , which did service elsewhere on weekdays. SOUTHERN DAYS. Glossy Red-Brown Pullman Livery. In the Railway Magazine, Vol.75, July-December 1934, page 377, Mr. Brailsford mentioned that Carmen, the vehicle destroyed in the Sevenoaks derailment of 26 August 1927, ran up to the time of its end in the maroon livery adopted by for a short time for the ordinary SECR passenger stock [i.e. glossy red-brown from 1910 to 1916], the SECR alone among the British railways having refused to adopt the standard colours of the Pullman Company. New Pullman Cars for International Boat Expresses, Southern Railway. The Railway Gazette, July-December 1924, pages 636-7, described new Pullman Cars built by the Midland R.C. & W. Co. Ltd. at Birmingham for use on the 10.50 a.m. Victoria to Dover and the 5.30 p.m. Dover to London. Exteriorly the cars were painted in the familiar umber and cream relieved with gold lines and scroll decorations, giving a pleasing effect.

In this respect there was a return to the standard Pullman colours, the cars hitherto used on the SE & C Section of the Southern Railway being painted crimson lake [i.e. glossy red-brown] instead of umber and cream as on other lines. Interiorly the cars were decorated and upholstered according to varied schemes, us usual, as could be seen from the following notes as to individual vehicles:- Aurelia - Panelling in Cuban mahogany and ebony with m a r q u e t r y d e t a i l s o f Q u e e n A n n e p e r i o d . T h e e b o n y decoration in the centre of the panels was surrounded by highly figured mahogany, beautifully quartered. The carpet was green and the chairs were upholstered in green leather. Gilt fittings. Marjorie - Maple veneered panelling with purple band and black line border and a classic subject in marquetry on the large panels. The pilasters were inlaid with purple bands and black lines and the cornice inlaid with maple design on purple background. Plum trellis carpet. Floral design moquette on chairs. Silver oxydised fittings. Medusa - Shaped head mahogany panels, having "Adams" design marquetry and inlaid frieze rail. The pilasters and cornice were inlaid with light lines. Green trellis carpet and green hide covering on the chairs. Gilt fittings. Pauline - Panelling in mahogany with black band and light line border to panels that had floral and ribbon marquetry with oval inlaid medallions bearing a classic figure. The pilasters were inlaid with light lines and the moulded cornice cross-banded with light and dark lines. Green tre l l i s carpet an d l ight ground f lora l pattern moquette on chairs. Gilt fittings. Sappho - Mahogany panelling with basket of flowers marquetry in upper part with satinwood surround. Inlaid pi lasters and the cornice cross-banded with satin wood. Blue trellis carpet and biscuit colour with blue trellis moquette on chairs. Gilt fittings. Viking - Mahogany panell ing with diamond veneers. The panels were inlaid with swags and wreaths in satinwood with Greek key frieze rail. Blue trellis carpet and blue hide covering on chairs. Gilt fittings. Included in the train was the Pullman luggage and brake van Montana , built to harmonise with the passenger vehicles. The lavatory compartments were finished in polished mahogany throughout, the floors being covered with marbled Decolite. A pedestal wash basin was provided with both hot and cold water supply. The W.C. hopper was of White porcelain and two large mirrors were provided on the cross partition. The floors of the kitchens and pantries were covered with Decolite. Both kitchen and pantry were painted throughout in white enamel giving a very clean effect. The Locomotive Magazine, Vol.32, 1926, pages 21-23, indicated that the ceilings were finished dead white. The vestibules and corridors were panelled with selected mahogany and the floors were covered with interlocking black and white rubber tiling.

The Railway Magazine, Vol.56, January-June 1925, pages 97-99, covered the same ground. The Dover Boat Train, Southern Railway. The Locomotive Magazine, Vol. 32, 1926, pages 21-23, reported that the Carriages used on the boat trains had been constructed to work in conjunction with Pullman cars. The interior of the first class compartment was finished in walnut, relieved with sycamore panels, and the corridors of these carriages had a dado of slatted walnut, with walnut banding and sycamore panels above and between the windows. The upholstering for first class compartments was of green corded cloth with valance and cording to match. The floors of the compartments were covered with "Tournay" rugs and that of the corridor with bordered linoleum. With a view to the comfort of the passengers, special attention had been given to the design of the seats and backs. Mahogany was used throughout for the second class carriages, the corridors of which were slatted, and in the compartments relief was made by painting the panels with white enamel. The roofs of all compartments were also enamelled white. The second class compartments were trimmed in red, black and orange velvet and the floors were covered with bordered Brussels carpet. Copper oxidised fittings were used throughout the train. The exteriors of the cars were painte d with the Company's standard green, relieved by yellow lines, and the class number and the carriage number at the entrance of the vestibule doors. Painting of Folkestone Harbour in SR days by C. Hamilton Ellis. During a visit to Folkestone Museum in 1988 the Author examined an oil painting by Hamilton Ellis portraying a boat train at the start of the incline from Folkestone Harbour. It was hauled by two 'R' Class locomotives, Nos. A336 and A155, painted in Southern dark green; as No. A336 was repainted from SECR wartime grey in April 1926 (later than A155), that was the earliest date attributable to the scene (see "Locomotive History of SER" by Don Bradley (ROTS, 1985, ISBN 0 901115 48 7), page 199). Normally, one would have expected them to be painted in goods black with green lining, but just possibly the Folkestone Harbour tanks were initially regarded in SR days as mixed traffic engines and accordingly painted in olive green, as were the passenger engines. The principal interest in the painting, however, lay with the first three coaches of the train. The first coach was a former SECR panelled birdcage brake 3rd. painted sage green (see INVICTA 26, page 85/15 and INVICTA 36, page 91/25); the second coach was a 1924 "Continental" vehicle to SECR design painted Southern dark green (see paragraph (3) immediately above); thirdly, there was a Pullman Car in glossy red-brown livery (see paragraph (1) above). Continuation of Glossy Red-Brown Livery into the 1930's. The Railway Magazine, Vol.67, July-December 1930, page 383, commented that the original South Eastern [i.e. SECR] cars and the two on the Metropolitan were exceptions and were painted in the shade of crimson lake formerly standard for SECR carriage stock [i.e. 1910-1916].

The Railway Magazine, Vol.78, January-June 1936, page 221, stated that the important links existing between the West London Extension Railway at Battersea and the Southern Railway lines in North Kent were demonstrated by the routing of a football special from Dartford to Derby on a recent Saturday. It comprised twelve vehicles, including a third class Pullman and the former South Eastern Pullman Savona, then used as a kitchen car, which was still in its lake livery. The Railway Magazine, Vol.81, July-December 1937, page 218, said that certain of the old Pullman cars on the Southern Railway had been converted into kitchen and pantry cars and were used for the service of meals and light refreshments on excursions and other special trains. These cars had the usual Pullman outline, but were painted all over in the umber brown colour that, in the normal Pullman stock, was used for the lower panels only. They were used on the Eastern and Central Divisions of the SR and on through excursions from that system to other railways. On page 217 of the Railway Magazine, Vol.85, July-December 1939, it was observed that the only Pullman cars remaining in service in Great Britain in all -over crimson lake, once the standard colour for the cars in use on the SECR system, were the two on the Metropolitan line of the LPTB. Drawings of SECR Pullman Cars 1910-1923. Mike King has produced a set of three sheets of 4mm scale drawings of these vehicles, both 8 and 12 wheeled. They may be obtained from him at 1 Myrtle Grove East Preston Littlehampton West Sussex BN16 2SW. Included are drawings of Alicante, Leghorn, Palmyra, Portia, Rosalind, Calais, Milan and Padua, whose liveries have been fully described in this article. The drawings cost £3.00 each, plus £3.00 per order for postage and there are several more in the range, including the J class vehicles on ex-LNWR underframes, T class on GWR underframes as well as a selection of K class post-1923 vehicles. Sleeping Cars for the Channel Ferry Service. The Locomotive Magazine, Vol. 43, 1937, page 10, advised that the new sleeping cars for the Channel Ferry Service between London and Paris have been built for the International Sleeping Car Company by the Ateliers de Construction du Nord de la France et des Mureaux at the Blanc Misseron Works. Although they were generally similar to the all-steel sleeping cars used on the Continent, the dimensions were less, in order that they could run over the SR between London and Dover. Drawings of the side, plan and end elevations of the sleeping cars accompanied the notes. The Railway Magazine, Vol.79, July-December 1936, pages 412-422, published an article by O.S. Nock, entitled "Dover, The Railhead of Britain". In it he recounted how the arrival of the outward-bound service, at a little before midnight, provided a spectacle unique on British railways. The blue "Sleepers", familiar enough on the Continent, gave a most distinctive air to an English station; curtains drawn aside here and there revealed the bright saxe-blue interior colour s c h e m e o f t h e s l e e p i n g b e r t h s a n d t h e chocolate-coloured uniforms of the French stewards added a final touch to the unusual.

The Frontispiece of the Railway Magazine, Vol.81, July-December 1937, consisted of a colour plate illustrating the Paris-London through express passing Bickley hauled by "L1" Class No.1758 and "Dl" Class No. 1145. The train consisted of three fourgons, the middle one with a central birdcage, six sleeping cars of the Wagons-Lits Company specially built for the Dover-Dunkerque train ferry service and SR Pullman cars. The fourgons were painted a dark olive green and the sleeping cars a dark blue; all had white roofs. George Mortimer Pullman - The Last Call - October 1897 - T.Bye.

Graceland Cemetery G M Pullman 1831 to 1897 Memorial Stone.

George Pullman (1831 to 1897) attended a stockholders' meeting at the Pullman Building on October 14th, 1897 and then, on the next two days, entertained Frank Thomson and other Pennsylvania Railroad executives in Chicago and Pullman. The aging magnate was so affable that the Pennsylvania men commented on it at their departure. However, the ordeal tired George, and the excessive walking he did at Pullman with his visitors hurt him severely. On October 17th, he notified his wife Harriet (Hattie) who was staying at Elberon to close the Pullman summer residence for the year, that he was not very well1. George had also complained about his indisposition, but most of his associates failed to notice his ill health. However, George knew that he had heart trouble, and had been warned that his end might come at any time2. George Pullman spent October 18th, working in his office until 5 p.m. He then went home to 879 (Later 1729) Prairie Avenue, Chicago and remained there, conversing with the Reverend and Mrs. Charles Eaton, who had arrived for a visit. George retired early, but about 4:30 a.m on October 19th, he summoned his valet to his bedside, stating that he was unwell and the family doctor was summoned. Meanwhile, Dr. Eaton was roused by the commotion of the servants and, learning the nature of the disturbance, hurried to Pullman's bedroom. He found George worsening and put in a second call to Dr. Billings, and shortly after the doctor reached the house, George died of a massive heart attack3.

Harriett Pullman after closing Fairlawn, went to the Holland House in New York, and it was here when George West appeared at her room very early on the morning of Tuesday October 19th, bearing the sad news of her husband's death. Highly distraught, she left on the Pennsylvania Limited, accompanied by Robert Lincoln and was met at Fort Wayne by a dear friend, Mrs. H. O. Stone, who stayed with her until she reached home4. The funeral service was held at the Pullman home at 879 Prairie Avenue on Saturday October 23rd. Family members were joined by many out-of-town celebrities and prominent Chicagoans, the list of honary and active pallbearers read like a roster of the Chicago social register and the executive force of the Pullman Palace Car Company. The reverend N,D.Hills and the Reverend C.H.Eaton were the officiating clergy, spoke briefly followed by the singing from the Imperial Quartet, and the coffin was closed5. The cortege began the long journey (approximately 11 miles) to Graceland Cemetery located on the North side of Chicago (N.Clark St & W.Irving Park Road) where George Pullman had chosen to be buried. For some time prior to George Pullman’s death, he was worried that his corpse might be kidnapped by disgruntled former employees and to prevent possible desecration. There had been instances of grave molestation in the past, including that involving the corpse of A. T. Stewart, the New York merchant, whose body was kidnapped from its resting place and held for ransom. George had his grave prepared accordingly: - His body was to lay in a lead-lined box that was to be wrapped in tar paper and coated with an inch of asphalt. The casket, to be lowered into the grave which was to be thirteen feet long, by nine feet wide, and eight feet deep, resting on a concrete base eighteen inches thick. Once the casket had been correctly positioned, the space around the casket up to the casket lid was to be surrounded by concrete. The enclosing walls up to half an inch above the asphalt coating on the coffin and placed eight heavy T-rails transversely across the top. Resting on the concrete walls at either side, their lower surfaces cleared the asphalt covering by half an inch to allow for settling and to prevent the heavy steel from crushing the casket top. The rails were to be bolted together by two long rods, more tar paper was placed on top to prevent the flow of additional concrete into the half inch space between the rails and the asphalt surrounding the coffin. Further concrete to be laid, the rods lay like a “wall of stone and steel” between his coffin and any potential grave robber. At Hattie Pullman’s request to Solon Spencer Beman (who designed the company town of Pullman, Illinois), to design an elegant monument, this was to be a single Corinthian column monument stands on the surface of George Pullman’s resting place6.

Pullman Car CAMBRIA (LNER Departmental 960820). The cars only 'Commercial' use in preservation on the K&ESR - D.Lindsay. George Orwell’s novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’, (also known as 1984) has been made into two films, The first was released in 1956 and starring Edmond O'Brien, Michael Redgrave, Jan Sterling. The second being a remake and released in 1984.

The 1984 British dystopian drama film written for the screen and directed by Michael Radford. Starring John Hurt, Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton, and Cyril Cusack, the film follows the life of Winston Smith in Oceania, a country run by a totalitarian government. This was to be the last screen appearance of Richard Burton's and was dedicated to him. However, CAMBRIA’s stay at the Kent & East Sussex Railway (K&ESR), albeit mainly static, resting, awaiting possible restoration, was interrupted by one 'commercial' use of the car when she ventured down the line on several occasions for a film location contract. In early the early 1980’s, I was Commercial Manager at the K&ESR we were approached from a film company to provide a 'Freedom Train' as mentioned in Orwell's novel ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ (1984) as the film was to be released in 1984, the actual year (actually released in October 1984). There were several notable actors involved, however the location shots on the K&ESR really only involved John Hurt (who played the main part of Winston Smith) plus lots of extras including myself. The 'Freedom Train' had to have a dilapidated and run-down look for the Director, and we used CAMBRIA with two other unrestored coaches, these being a South Eastern & Chatham Railway Birdcage Brake coach and a Southern Railway Maunsell coach, in addition the film company spent

many days making the K&ESR 0-6-0 ex-USA Tank locomotive ‘Maunsell’ look similar to the coaches. The three coaches were made functional enough to run on this special hire only, and indeed some shots were actually taken in the SR coach full of extras singing a very haunting lament whilst travelling along the K&ESR. The train wasn't through braked at all, but a guard was positioned in the S&ECR birdcage brake where the handbrake was available.

I was employed as an extra, as were many K&ESR volunteers, and were given an extra payment as we all had to have 1920 haircuts, many people were amused at the very short back and sides which in the early 1980s was quite severe as we still tended to have longer hair then. In fact, my wife came down to see what was going on, and didn't recognise me!!!

The contract filming took several days, and in fact the locomotive required a complete repaint afterwards as the temporary 'dirty' livery wouldn't come off as advised beforehand by the props contractor, this of course was claimed for from the Company involved. On completion CAMBRIA was shunted back into a siding at Tenterden, and wasn't moved again until its final relocation at Robertsbridge.

As ever my thanks to Tommy Knox for the following information on steam hauled Pullman services on the East Coast Main Line. Within the text reference is made to ‘Up’ and ‘Dn’ workings. These relate thus, an ‘Up’ working is a service to London Kings Cross, and ‘Dn’ is a ‘Down’ working from Kings Cross. I.e. All lines to any of London’s terminals are classified as the ‘UP Line’. Join us for this unique journey from London to Bournemouth, exactly 50 years to the day since the last steam hauled service on July 5th, 1967.

On a beautiful sunny day, we begin our journey from London Waterloo. Running on the fast line, we take the old London and South Western Mainline via Wimbledon, Surbiton, & Weybridge, saluted by crowds of onlookers. We branch away from the West of England Line at Worting Junction and continue south towards Winchester. We then pass through Eastleigh, the spiritual home for so many ex-Southern Railway locomotives before coasting through Southampton. Once clear of the restrictions we speed through the beautiful New Forest before arriving at our destination, the seaside city of Bournemouth.

John Wheller - Aries Project Volunteer Lead.

Pullman Car ARIES. On the 17th August 2017, the vehicles within the C & W shed were shuffled about to allow ARIES to be placed over the inspection pit ready for Amstech to set up for the removal of the asbestos from inside the vehicle. Amstech commenced on the 21st August as planned with the sealing of ARIES ready to commence the de-contamination. As the car was now over the pit it gave us the opportunity to look underneath and we were not impressed with what we found. The underside has large areas of asbestos under the flooring as well as pipe insulation, some of which appears to be asbestos. Our specialist Contractor has been requested to advise and this will now need to be removed incurring more delays and cost. We are particularly disappointed that the floor to the main saloon, which had been our intension to retain, will probably now need to be taken up to gain access to the asbestos beneath. All in all, this is not the positive start a project needs especially when one considers that we were advised that the asbestos had been removed in the past, prior to our purchase. We are looking at ways to speed up the restoration once the car has been decontaminated. The problems we have encountered highlight the difficulties to be had when restoring old vehicles that have been many years since they were last in service. SAPPHIRE, PADUA & ROSALIND - A.Larkins. Progress of the restoration of the three cars was marked with the erection of a large temporary tent over the Pullman cars in preparation of the commencement of restoration. But due to the restoration of four wagons being fast tracked, the Pullman cars were relocated outside the tent, each car retaining its original sheeting. The four wagons will on completion of their restoration (December 2017) will be relocated to Folkestone. On relocation of the four wagons the Pullman cars will then be moved into the vacant tent. A large team will then commence the cars restoration. I will photograph the cars restorations throughout and will forward copies as and when. I was inside car ROSALIND on Friday (25th) and can see that these will be done beautifully.

JUNO Reborn - in part at least.

©NRM Collection.

External View of JUNO outside the Pullman Car Company Preston Park Works, Brighton.

In previous contributions to ‘Pullman & CIWL News’ I have mentioned that most of FORMOSA’s original coupe compartment panelling was removed following the ‘Camping Coach’ conversion in the early 1960s. What remained has been re-deployed elsewhere in the car to make good other losses in the two main saloons. I have also mentioned in the past that I was fortunate to be able to purchase damaged and vandalised panels and other wood-work from the owners of the Marazion Pullmans following the thefts from those cars and the subsequent scrapping of the vehicles remaining on site. These retrieved panels from JUNO have now been completely refurbished. Some initial repair work was done by Dunns of Chelmsford but most of the restoration and finishing has been done by a skilled cabinet maker called Chris Foskett ([email protected]). I hope you will agree that the results are excellent. Tailoring the JUNO material to fit the FORMOSA coupe was not as simple as might be thought. Each car was built to a different design by a different builder at a different date. In addition, the JUNO panels came from the spaces between the window lights and not from the coupe or any partitions, these having been stolen in the earlier thefts. The mahogany framing has all had to be adapted to fit the FORMOSA coupe with, for example, voids left by the redundant bell pushes blanked off. The framing from the former central partitions between the main JUNO saloons has had a particularly hard life.

Saloon Interiors of JUNO.

Altered in the late 1940s to take dining chairs for ‘Devon Belle’ service, they were altered again when JUNO was restored to 1st class in the early 1950s and then heavily damaged when slammed together and boarded over for ‘Camping Coach’ duties. I have had to adapt them further to re-instate partitions between FORMOSA’s coupe and coupe corridor. But I have opted to re-use as much original material as possible and I hope that ‘honest repairs’ are acceptable for secondary wood work - together with my limited skills at French polishing. Whilst the door to the coupe originated from JUNO, the adjacent upper and lower panels in the adapted framing are completely new. I provided Chris Foskett with a simplified design using similar veneers to JUNO’s 1923 originals, these being quartered mahogany with tulipwood inlays. The lengths of frieze from JUNO’s two coupes were an easier fit and these have been shoe-horned into FORMOSA’s coupe with minor alterations. The JUNO panelling is a patrician and elegant design in the neo-classical style. The marquetry is exceptional even by Pullman’s high standards. The tinted and shaded green laurel leaves in the main panels and freize are exquisite and brilliantly executed. I believe the overall composition stands comparison with the best 18th century work.

A table, lamp and chairs will be added later. The main item missing is the parcel rack. Three of these racks from JUNO were advertised for sale earlier this Summer but unfortunately were sold before I had the chance to put in an offer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the earlier owners of JUNO, Kim and Julian Aubanel and the later owners, Claire and George Cresswell, for their kindness in selling me the JUNO material prior to JUNO being scrapped. They have helped me take a big step forward in the restoration of FORMOSA and we Pullman aficionados have re-gained, in part, one of the most magnificent traditional Pullman car interiors previously only seen in the black and white photograph, illustrated, from the NRM collection. A selection of photographs of the restored Coupe within FORMOSA (All copyright P.O’Connor).

Remembering Esmond Lewis-Evans - Doug Lindsay.

©D.Lindsay.

Class 01 No. in 2009 on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. Esmond Lewis Evans is seen on the footplate in the orange high-vis-vest.

Sadly, we have to report the passing of our Pullman Society member Esmond Lewis-Evans on August 5th, 2017. Esmond was a true eccentric English Gentleman. I first came across him when my mother had a general store right opposite the entrance to the former Ashford, Kent motive power depot (74A). In the heady days of the late 60s and early 70s when I was avidly collecting railwayana in my travels around the South, it was my mum who put me in touch with Esmond who frequented her shop for supplies and no doubt I came up in conversation. It was Esmond who we have to thank for saving many items of rolling stock and other artefacts including three Pullman Cars, Sapphire, Phyllis and Lucille and of course the SECR Class 01 0-6-0 locomotive, 31065. On my fairly frequent visits to him in the office of the closed depot which he rented from British Railways at that time, he told me a little of his background and his return to the UK from Rhodesia following the death of his brother Stuart Lewis-Evans who was a well-known racing driver at the time, and had sustained a fatal accident whilst racing.

Following his return from abroad he heard of the last remaining Class 01 locomotive that was destined for dispatch to Sheerness for scrapping and he felt this loco should be saved being the last surviving Stirling built SER locomotive. Having saved the locomotive he needed somewhere to keep it and it was then that he rented the depot and eventually set up the South Eastern Steam Centre, as it was titled for a period. His collection grew quite rapidly with the purchase of car Sapphire which was the last remaining of three Camping Coaches at Sandling Junction, the other two having been scrapped on site. He also purchased out of service following the demise of the Bournemouth Belle, Phyllis and Lucille which I recall still had table lamps, cutlery, crockery, linen and uniform jackets inside when I first visited them at his centre. The depot, at that time still had the turntable and water tower in place and several sidings plus the remaining roof on the three roads of the shed that had finally been used as a diesel depot following the rundown of steam after the electrification of the Kent Coast lines. These three covered roads with full length pits were used to store his growing collection whilst the remaining half dozen roads, now without roof, started to be occupied by other vehicle owning groups who also needed somewhere to store recent purchases. Locomotives that were hosted there over the period included the SECR C Class 0-6-0 and H Class 0-4-4T, the LMR Black Five 45110, Merchant Navy 35028 Clan Line and one of the Urie S15 4-6-0s plus a few industrial locos and a small steam crane, and even the French Nord 4-6-0 which became part of the national Collection but has now returned to France I believe. Rolling stock included an ex SECR Birdcage Brake coach, three of the eight unique Bullied Double Decker suburban coaches, again straight from traffic following their withdrawal. For a time, early on, another Pullman Car was stored there still in its BR blue and grey livery and I believe it was car Orion from the Golden Arrow set that had been acquired by a local farmer and eventually was purchased as we all know by Peco at Beer in Devon where it still resides.

In addition to these large relics Esmond amassed a vast collection of smaller items including many targets and totems mainly from Southern stations and a host of varied other items from all parts of our railway history, it was a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of anything and everything with a railway connection. In the early 70s he got permission to open the centre to the public on Sundays and he, and the owning groups, often had a loco in steam giving brake van rides up and down the yard and one could at times ride in one of the Pullmans if he took them out of the shed!! For a few years it became what we all hoped would be a permanent situation whereby it formed a sort of museum-cum-steam depot, not unlike the early days at Carnforth, but it was never organised ‘properly’ and eventually BR decided that there was always a risk having the public wandering around the site when only yards away were live rails on the main line. In addition, there was always some question over his lease ‘agreement’ for the site which was often brought up by various authorities and some of the owners of ‘guest’ locos and stock decided to find other locations to accommodate their precious vehicles which are now in safe hands at the Bluebell Railway, Mid-Hants Railway and various other locations.

Ashford Steam Centre on March 29th, 1970, with SECR No.65 & Pullman Car PHYLLIS. The centre lasted throughout the 70s but decline set in following closure to the public and stock moving away and a general air of doom and decay slowly descended over the site. BR stopped Esmond from even making movements within the site, except where stock was leaving, they removed the turntable and disconnected the exit line and I believe he was given notice to leave. By now things had become rather dire, there was no electricity or water connected, he was forced to ‘live’ in an outside SR concrete PW hut on the site which was far from convenient. He was also subject to numerous break-ins and general abuse from local hooligans, let alone all sorts of threats from the BR solicitors, for poor Esmond, life was at its lowest. Most of the guest organisations, if not all, had by now removed all their property and time was running out, BR had even sought valuations of his property for auction as a way of recouping the alleged arrears of rent for the site. Eventually an auction sale was announced by Southerby’s which would take place at the Ashford Steam Centre and would include the main artefacts including the Class 01 and the various coaches and Pullmans. Esmond was hanging on hoping that he could stave off the fateful day, but eventually that day arrived, the auctioneer and his team arrive, so did prospective buyers and their representatives. However, Esmond was up early that day and was busy having the Class 01 dismantled into several large pieces (ie Frames, Boiler, Tender) and these were taken away to different locations across Kent & Essex as were the Pullmans, SECR Birdcage and DD coach. Sadly, prior to the sale, one of BRs ‘threats’ was that they would have vehicles cut up on site to sell as scrap in lieu of rent, and this they did when the only remaining centre car of the DD set was destroyed in an attempt to get results.

Of course, in hindsight, that was sacrilege as we now cannot even make a 3-DD set even if the will and cash were available! In the event, the sale had to be cancelled due to the ever present low loaders that very morning moving in and taking the Lots away, much to the embarrassment of Southerbys staff and the BR representatives present!! In the intervening years since those early 80s much has changed. The Class 01 is at the Bluebell and has just returned to traffic resplendent in full SE&CR livery after its second 10-year overhaul there, car Lucille has been in traffic for many years in the British Pullman being enjoyed by thousands of guests, Phyllis is now under cover at Stewarts Lane awaiting her turn for restoration after many years stored in the open at Horsted Keynes. Sapphire, another escapee, originally went to the Lavender line and was part restored there, and then was purchased for use in the Puffing Billy complex at Seaburn, and as we know has recently retuned South with a view to being placed at Folkestone Harbour, a station she would have frequented many times in her earlier life! Esmond finally had to leave the site when demolition was programmed to make space for the new HS1 line to pass through Ashford and he returned to his flat locally.

As far as I know he never married and was a very ‘singular’ type person, I do recall, as many will, he had a mongrel dog at one time at the Steam Centre called ‘Simba’ and I can hear him now bellowing out Simba’s name in an attempt to find him, then he would return, covered in all sorts of dirt where he had been down in the pit or under rolling stock seeking any food left by visitors!!! I do know Esmond was very fond of Simba. Over the years he has kept in touch with many of us, and indeed he has attended many Pullman Society AGMs and events. He even arranged for his beloved Class 01 loco to make a visit to the KESR, really its almost natural home as it worked on the line from Nationalisation until closure, and a line where Esmond would have loved it to remain as the class were synonymous with the post war KESR. I also seem to recall he travelled on the famed Pullman Centenarian to Bradford made up of the British Pullman (VSOE in those days!!) hauled by Deltic D9000 back in 1997. Esmond always had a soft spot for anything Pullman and was always willing and happy to talk about Pullman matters and his acquisitions over the years. It is a great loss to the preservation movement as a whole, that he has left this earth, but Esmond was such a character that I am sure everyone who came into contact with him over the years will never forget him. A real eccentric, a raconteur and determined English gentleman always with a twinkle in his eye and an ever ready to share experiences, and more importantly to help anyone if he could, although in his later years he became less active. Rest in peace Esmond, your remaining loco and Pullmans will be your memorial for us all to enjoy in the future, may I therefore say a Thank You from all of us in the heritage movement. My personal thanks to Doug Lindsay for the text and photograph and also Mike Morant for the two additional photographs. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With regard to current progress of the restoration of the 5Bel cars, I have no update to share. In the period since the last newsletter, I have learnt that Neil Marshall has relinquished his role as Communication Director for the 5Bel Trust. In the period of time that news of the restoration has appeared within this newsletter, the majority of the information and photographs have been supplied by Neil. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Neil for all his past endeavor’s in support of both this newsletter and the 5Bel Trust. On checking the 5Bel Trust website, there has been no news update since April.

From: Alan Cheetham Subject: Corfe Castle Camping Coach A recent acquisition is a used copy of 'Swanage Railway in colour' by Tim Deacon, published by Ian Allan 1996. The image by C.L.Caddy on page 19 dated 22 July 1967 shows a pair of TC sets being propelled out of Corfe Castle station. In the distance a Pullman Car is visible parked in the Upside Sidings. The caption says it was one of 2 such vehicles present. I would be interested to learn the identities of both these Cars and how long they continued in use as Corfe Campers. In Response: The first Camping/Holiday Coach was located at Corfe Castle on June 22nd, 1960 (No. P43). The second Camping/Holiday Coach arrived at Corfe Castle May 22nd, 1961 (No. P52). The first detailed car being P43 ex car CORAL, being the very first Pullman car converted to a Camping/Holiday Coach following withdrawal by the Pullman Car Company and then sold to British Railways for conversion. The second detailed car being P52 ex car MILAN, later CAR No.98. On the Southern Region, Camping/Holiday coaches were withdrawn at the end of the 1967 season. Both the cars at Corfe Castle were scrapped on site in 1968.

Tail Lamp. As ever my thanks to all those readers who have taken out time to contribute to this edtion of your newsletter. Rest assured for without your contributions in the format of news, updates, articles and photographs this edition would not have been possible. Contributions relating to the CIWL section have been in short in supply within the newsletter of late. If any reader has any information, news and photographs they would like to share please feel free to forward for inclusion within the next edition. The addition to the formation of the Venice Simplon-Orient Express of the internally converted CIWL car to a three ‘Grand Suites’ car, will add that additional wow and luxury factor to the already ‘World Class’ train that celebrated 35 years operation in May of this year. With the addition of the ‘Spa Car’ to the Royal Scotsman train formation, Belmond must be congratulated for having pushed the boundaries of luxury train travel in elegance, style and luxury both within the United Kingdom and Europe. One man can make a difference, and that one man is Pat O’Connor, down in deepest Devon at Portsmouth Arms station, located next to the Exeter to Barnstaple railway line. Pat has been slowly and methodically in true Pullman style been restoring car FORMOSA to her to past style and elegance. Not easy task to undertake in your spare time, but as can be read and seen within Pat’s article within this edition. The restoration progress to date is amazing, and full credit to Pat on his scheduled program of restoration of FORMOSA.
