NEW! JAPANESE TEMARI!

The Japanese word “Te-Mari” translates as “hand-ball. “ What began as a child’s toy in ancient Japan has evolved into a revered art form. Temari were made from discarded kimono threads. A core of wadded fabric, paper or rice hulls was wrapped so tightly with thread that these balls could actually bounce. Today, Temari are given as gifts of happi-ness and joy for special occasions. To make a Temari, you start with a styrofoam ball that you wrap tightly with thread-for your base color. Then with some math and measuring and an embroidery needle, you create geometric designs in contrasting colors of perl cotton. Lolly Buxton learned about the craft of Temari in her many travels to Japan and also through her involvement with the Japanese Society here in Kansas City. She has studied under a Japanese temari artist. These make lovely and meaningful gifts and can be used as in a variety of ways as household decorations. DATES/TIME: Sundays, October 22 & 29, 1:30-3:30 pm OR Fridays, October 20 & 27, 1:30-3:30 pm. FEE: $30 + Supplies. Instructor: Lolly Buxton.

STITCHING FOR A CAUSE

This is the time of year that the Studio Charity Project Team begins to gear up for Holiday Markets, where par-ents and children can select presents for other family members. This year we will be contributing to Holiday Markets for Operation Breakthrough, which serves work-ing poor families in the inner city and Hope House, a do-mestic abuse shelter in Lee’s Summit. The group meets the first Sunday of each month from 1-2:30 pm. Contact group moderator, Nancy McDonnell at knitseverywhere@ gmail.com for more information.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

You haven’t really multi-tasked until you have

counted stitches and carried on a conversation at

the same time.
