ABOUT THE POOLS

This month’s topic may or may not be a sensitive subject depending on your point of view. We often get comments about patrons using change rooms of the opposite sex. Generally this involves younger children and sometimes special needs patrons. The fact that Fritz Sick, Nicholas Sheran, Stan Siwik and Henderson Pools were built many years ago at time when accessibility was not as big a consideration is the major factor creating this issue. Some family change rooms have been added to both Nicholas Sheran and Stan Siwik that have helped to alleviate the problem however the cost to provide unrestricted access to the pools is very large and some would say the money would be better spent on a new facility. The general guideline that we use is that we ask patrons with children in the age range of 6 years & up to use the Family change rooms as there are often patrons who are uncomfortable when they use opposite sex change rooms (if they are old enough to go in to the appropriate change room on their own then please do so). If someone does use opposite sex change rooms with a child that is “older” we will suggest alternatives as our goal is not to be confrontational but rather to find a solution that works for everyone which most times is easier said than done. The best is to try to work with each other to make it as comfortable as possible for everyone. Some suggestions include but are not limited to:1) Only use the Family Change rooms if you need to - this will keep them open for those that do need to use them2) Use change stalls with the curtains if available in the regular change rooms3) Ask the staff for other alternatives for pools like Henderson and Fritz that don’t have Family Change rooms4) Be tolerant of other peoples feelings5) Be tolerant of the staff - likely they are asking because another patron has raised a concern and they are caught in the middle of a difficult situation dealing with adults that are likely older than them.

development model!

The first three stages:

Active Start (0-6) - fun, part of daily life! Active play in safe and challenging

environments is best

FUNdamentals (6-9 boys, 6-8 girls) - skill development is best achieved as a

combination of unstructured play in a safe and challenging environment

Learn to Train (9-12 boys, 8-11 girls) -- a period of accelerated learning of

coordination and fine motor skills! Time to develop all fundamental movement skills and

Picnics

Who doesn’t love a picnic? Food,

family, friends, games and a beautiful

setting? People of southern Alberta

have enjoyed picnics for generations.

Here are a few random picnic

memories.

In 1891 the citizens of Lethbridge

picnicked at the Stafford Ranch to

commemorate the incorporation of

Lethbridge as a town.

The Hironakas enjoyed a quiet family

picnic in the early 1930s.

Joseph Baceda, Fabiro Bridarolli and

an unidentified woman provided

accordion music for the Italian Club

Picnic of 1949.

A Cappella Harmony

A cappella harmony is a joy to hear and exciting to sing. Voices make all the music and there is a

special sound you hear when the chords lock and ring. Traditionally, the focus is on the harmony but

you will see variations where voices emulate instruments such as on the TV show The Sing Off or in

the Pitch Perfect movies.

Southern Accord Chorus

Southern Accord is a dynamic group of women who sing 4 part a cappella harmony. The chorus and

smaller ensemble and quartets perform at functions and events throughout the year. Members

range in age from 17 to 70 and come from across Southern Alberta to share the experience and

practice to perform their music. The chorus continuously strives to improve their craft- to be pitch

perfect too!

Sweet Adelines International

Southern Accord is a proud member of Sweet Adelines International. Sweet Adelines is a highly

respected worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing their musical art form.

Members extend over five continents and belong to more than 500 choruses and 1,200 quartets.

Pollinators are hard-working animals that help pollinate over 75% of our flowering plants , and nearly 75% of our crops. We often do not notice these critters as they go about their work. Yet without them, wildlife would have fewer nutritious berries and seeds, and we would miss many fruits, vegetables, and nuts, like blueberries. Squash, and almonds… not to mention chocolate and coffee… all of which

depend on pollinators.

The main threats facing pollinators are habitat loss. Degradation and fragmentation. As native vegetation is replaced by roadways, manicured lawns, crops and non-native gardens, pollinators lose the food and nesting sites that are necessary for their survival.

Here are several ways to make your garden a haven for pollinators: 1– use pollinator friendly plants in your landscapes. 2– choose a mixture of plants for spring, summer, and fall. 3– reduce or eliminate pesticide use in your landscape, or incorporate plants that attract beneficial insects for pest control. 4– accept some plant damage on plants to provide habitat for pollinators. 5– provide clean water in a shallow dish with some debris to rest on. www.nrcs.usda.gov & www.fws.gov

· Many wasps, ants, flies, beetles and even the male Mosquito all play an important role in pollinating plants.

· Birds, like a hummingbird and bats are also pollinators

· Planting a variety of plants will attract many different pollinators to your backyard or planter garden.

· Avoid or limit the use of pesticides in your yard and garden

· Leave some debris in your yard for pollinators to nest, raise their young, and over winter

Lethbridge College’s Be Fit For

Life Active Living Guide

Active Transportation for the School Year

Life has become a lot easier with all the

technological advancements over the years. We

are able to get from place to place much faster,

food is ready quicker, giving us the ability to cram

more chores into our day. However, it’s not all

good news. Although these advancements may

seem helpful, they are actually a major contributor

to the physical inactivity epidemic we are faced

with today. We have mechanized activity out of

our daily lives, and it’s time to get it back.

One such way of adding more physical activity to

our daily lives is through active transportation.

Active transportation refers to any form of

human-powered transportation – walking, cycling,

using a wheelchair, and in-line skating or

skateboarding. There are many ways to engage in

active transportation, whether it is walking to the

bus stop, or cycling to school/work.

With the school year quickly approaching, and the

weather still on your side, it is a worthwhile

endeavour to attempt some of these active

transport ideas with you and your family during

the first few weeks of school. Try it out, you might

just find something that works for you!

Another consideration when it comes to your

children’s physical activity, is to encourage your

children to engage in regular physical activity

while at school. It is impossible to be with them

every step of the way. Here are some things that

Playworks has suggested when to considering

your children’s physical activity level at school:

- Do all kids feel included? Kids sit out

because they don’t feel welcomed.

Encourage your child to take on a

leadership role by inviting those around

them to join a game.

- Does your child’s school withhold recess

as punishment? Recess is a crucial part

of the school day and shouldn’t be taken

away to punish any child.

What is 11 RCACSand theRoyal CanadianAir Cadets?TheRoyal CanadianAir Cadets is a national youthorganization for teens aged12 to 18, sponsoredby theAir Cadet League

(a civilianorganization) and theDepartment ofNationalDefence. Theorganization ismadeupmany training centres, headquarters, andmost importantly, the squadrons, ofwhich every cadet is a part of. 11RCACS is oneof the 450Air Cadetsquadrons across Canada, located in Lethbridge, Alberta.

What do Air Cadets do?Air Cadets in 11 RCACSmeet at least once aweek

onTuesdays from6:45 to 9:30 pmatVimy RidgeArmouries. While there, they undergo the standardclasses that are part of the Air Cadet program. That is,aviation studies, citizenship, leadership, e*ectivespeaking, outdoor survival, drill, sports andmanymore.

The training onTuesday nights is only the core ofthe program, the standard classes that all squadronsteach. It is the training and the teams on the squadronlevel, onweekends and otherweeknights, that reallymake up all the opportunities in the program, andthese are explained in further detail below, andthroughout this website.

What are some of the extra activitiesthat 11 RCACS does?

First of all, the squadron hasmany year-longteams, drill teams, amarksmanship (shooting) team, and a 2ag party. We also have sports teams, groundschool classes (prerequisite for glider/private pilotlicenses), andmuchmore. Just take a look around thewebsite for a better idea.

Who can join Air Cadets?Any Canadian citizen or landed Immigrant in good

health can join as early as 12 years of age, and canremain until they turn 19, the age atwhich theymustretire.

Howmuch is it going to costme?Air Cadets is sponsored by a civilian agency and the

squadron raises its ownmoney during the yearwithvarious fundraising events. The Canadian Forcesprovides uniforms, training facilities and instructors, and thus, Air Cadets isFREE. There are some smallfees for some trips, but these costs are keptminimal,

and can beworked around if amonetary need exists.Cadetswill not be excluded from trips if they can'ta*ord it.

Who teaches Air Cadets?Air Cadet instructors are often past cadets

themselves. They aremembers of the community andhold civilian occupations in areas such as businessowners, police o8cers,medical persons, and schoolemployees. Higher ranking air cadets are alsoinstructors, aswell asmembers of localmilitary units.

Are there summer camps?Summer courses are a very big part of Air Cadets,

and are run every year in July and August. There aremany di*erent courses ranging from2 to 7weeks.Cadets are not required to attend the courses, but it ishighly recommended. You can take everything frombasic cadet courses to advanced technical training, andfrom leadership courses to aerospace studies andmakegreat friends from all over Canada in the process! Aswith the rest of Air Cadets, summer courses are free, and each cadet is actually paid a training allowance of$60 perweek. Eventually an experienced cadet canapply for sta* positions for summer courses, and getpay equivalent to a full-time summer job.

Can I getmy pilot's license?Yes! Air Cadets o*ers twoTransport Canada Pilot

licenses, The Glider Pilot License (GPL) and the PrivatePilot License (PPL). Scholarships are o*ered to aircadets in order for them to get their pilot licenses atvarious airBelds and 2ying clubs around the province. The licenses are free through Air Cadets (the GPLnormally costs $2000,while PPL normally costs around$8000), cadets just have to paywith their dedicationand hardwork in the squadron.

During the year, cadetswith a glider license can 2y

at various cadet gliding centres around the provinceduringweekends, and scholarships are o*ered to payfor continued 2yingwhen some cadets retire. In fact, over 60 percent of Canada's airline pilots got their startin air Cadets.

Do I have to join themilitary?Air Cadets are notmembers of the Canadian Forces,

norwill they ever be asked to join. If you choose to jointhough, youwill have a great advantage over otherapplicants (most high-ranking o8cers in the Canadianforces started o* in the cadet program). However, youwill never be required to servewith themilitary.

Dowe travel?Every year, we travel within Alberta regularly. Each

summer, cadets from across Canada have theopportunity to enter in the exchange program tolocations all over theworld!

Where is 11 RCACS located? The squadron operates onTuesday nights at the

Vimy Ridge Armoury 337 Stubb Ross RoadLethbridge County Airport.

Howdo I join? It's easy to join. All you need to do is come out to

Lethbridge Airport on aTuesday evening (preferablybetween 6:30 and 7:30). If you'd like, you can follow agroup of cadets around during their training and yourparents arewelcome to attend towatch and askquestions.

If you decide to join, youwill need to Bll out andhand in an application, alongwith a photocopy of yourAlberta health card.Youwill also need to showproof ofCanadian citizenship or Landed Immigrant status, andmay need to showother documents to prove your age(such as a birth or baptismal certiBcate).
