thyroid disease‐ find an outlet to decrease anxiety. If you suffer from the following collection of symptoms, talk to your doctor: fatigue/ anxiety, heavier periods/lighter periods, sudden weight gain/weight loss, con‐stant coldness/constant heat, constipation/frequent bowel movements. It is estimated that 13 million Ameri‐cans have a thyroid disorder and don’t know!! The American thyroid Association recommends a TSH test every 5 years beginning in your mid 30’s.

We get screenings for blood pressure, blood glucose, bone density, dental health and the list goes on. But don’t neglect your thyroid gland. It is a butterfly shaped gland just below the voice box. It produces hormones that regulate the rate at which your body uses energy and burns calories. When it under or over produces this hormone, you increase your risk for many other health problems. If you have a family history of any autoim‐mune disorder (such as diabetes Type I or rheumatoid arthritis), this puts you at a higher risk. Be sure to get enough iodine‐ this is found in milk, seaweed and io‐dized salt (not in sea salt). Stress can play a role in trig‐gering the autoimmune processes that can contribute to

calcium. It has lutein which is needed for pre‐
vention of eye diseases. It is a high source of
antioxidant flavonoids which help ward off
heart disease and regulate blood pressure. It
is rich in Vitamin A and Vitamin C! For
women, it helps regulate estrogen and women who are
pregnant‐it provides iron and folic acid for proper devel‐
opment of a baby’s nervous system.

Blog by Anne Gatts: Waiting for Transformation I recently spent time at the hospital visiting a friend. Can‐cer is a respecter of no one and straddling the precipice between life and death is a difficult place to be. I gave
comfort in places where I could‐ cool towels to flushed faces, warm hugs to grieving hearts, and prayers for strength. When I returned home I wept at the scene I had left. Suffering is hard to bear. It wasn’t long before sorrow soon stirred up memories of the time I had spent at my father’s bedside as he died. He had chosen to forego any more medical treatment and so we waited. The final three days of his life were so precious and yet so
agonizing. But later when my tears had dried I remem‐bered that “Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” Lamentations 3:22‐24 At times, waiting seems too hard‐ waiting for the pain to stop, waiting for healing, even waiting for death. Yet it is clear to me that waiting is what I am called to do. It is what I do with that time between petition and provision
that allows me to be transformed. Even when I do not see the answer at hand I must lean into the Father’s arms knowing that new mercies are poured out on me morning upon morning. And in the deep well of the LORD’s com‐passion I can draw my strength. A seed does not grow into a flower overnight. When it’s planted into the ground the time before it sprouts re‐mains a mystery. I cannot see the root push‐ing through the soil to gather nutrients. Be‐fore the tender green stem sprouts through the ground I have no knowledge of it. I can only have faith that the soil in which it is planted is rich and warm with life. It is in the time of wait‐ing between planting and sprouting that the seed is trans‐formed. Oh Lord, let me be transformed in the places where I must wait! Let me draw from your fertile soil of love and compassion to be the woman you have called me to be. And when the wait‐ing is hard, remind me Holy Spirit that your steadfast love is never changing and new every morning.

A Note from Finance Committee
The Finance Committee met on Wednesday, August 8, to talk about the budget for 2013. The 2013 budget will be based on our church's projected expenditures for 2012, and each committee will be offered an addi‐tional five percent funding that they can prioritize for use in the manner that they think best helps the con‐gregation connect with God and with others. In addi‐tion, the Finance Committee would like to reserve some funding that any new mission or service could
propose to use ‐‐ a means to support new "Bright Ideas" that the church seeks to develop. Thank you all for the time so many of you contrib‐ute to the committee budgeting process, and thank you all who share your treasures with the church so that we may be the hands and feet of God, doing his works on earth.

The Summer Lunch Program was a great success! Every Wednesday during the summer we had three teams go out and deliver and average of 150 lunches. Thanks go out to all the people who donated food and their time. Thank you for making this ministry possible.
Summer Lunch Program Thanks
Churches in Mission 25th Anniversary Banquet Come and celebrate 25 years of service with the Churches in Mission. This is a very special mission which helps over 400 local families per month with food, utility assistance, and household goods. Several of our church members regularly help at the mission and the UM Men often help by doing special building projects there. We are hoping to support the mission with at least 5 tables of 8 people (40) people attend‐ing.
There will be a catered dinner and auction, beginning at 6:00pm on Saturday, October 6th at Grace Church (doors open at 5:30). Tickets to the event may be pur‐chased for $30 each from Jean Thaler, Ginny Kerr, or Bill Yeager. We will also be selling tickets between
church services on Sunday August 26th and Sunday, September 9th.
Our church will also be collecting items to auction, either to create baskets or to have for a silent auc‐tion. If you have anything to donate, please let one of the Churches in Mission Board Members know (Jean Thaler, Ginny Kerr, Bill Yeager, Michelle Frye). It can be empty baskets, gift certificates, tickets, or anything that would make a pretty basket. We would be very appreciative if some of the church small groups would commit to creating a basket for the auction. Thank you! Your Missions Committee
Meals on Wheels: Needs Drivers
First UMC delivers Meal's on Wheel's to five Moores‐ville shut‐ins on Mondays. You or your family may
have benefitted from this volunteer ser‐vice in the past. It takes about 1.5 hours to pick up the meals at St Francis Hospi‐tal and drop them off at six homes. You can pick up the meals around 11:15AM.
Due to changing interests from our vol‐
unteers, we no longer have anyone to deliver meals on the first or fourth Monday of a month. If someone would be willing to do this, we can provide instruc‐tions. Please let Claire Farrand know 372‐8539 or email Claire at [email protected] by September 7th. If there is no one willing to take this on, we will let the senior center know that our church cannot support
this mission opportunity. Thank you for considering.
Service & Mission News
Soon the halls will be buzzing with children and their art work will cover the walls. Pre‐school’s first day is September 4th. We anticipate a wonderful year and are very thankful for all your support and prayers.
Tomorrow’s Promise Preschool
A Bible study offered at the house of Mark and Cindy Husk will be starting Thursday, September 6, at 7‐8:30PM and will meet every other Thurs‐day. This study will be led by Rev. Gene Young. The first 16 weeks (8 week study), we will be reading and studying “Introduction to Romans “. After that, we will be starting, “Jesus in The Gos‐pels”. Both of these publications are through Cokesbury.

Carnival Worker’s Dinner THANK YOU! This ministry marks its 10th year! The workers appreci‐ate and look forward to this dinner every year. Gary Bohlander, owner of Poor Jack Amusements, said that their company splits employees between the State Fair and Old Settlers each year. The workers always ask if they “get” to come to Mooresville! Thank you to eve‐ryone who helped with this important ministry. Those who donated food, gave the workers an amazing feast to enjoy. Volunteers worked tirelessly in the kitchen preparing the food and cleaning up afterwards. Gary and Ruth Bohlander, along with the employees of Poor Jack Amusements are always touched and grateful to see our youth helping with the dinner.
Karen Harmon generously provided chair massages for their tired and achy muscles. Cheryl Howard and Sue Klinger kindly provided blood pressure checks and counseled them regarding any health concerns. Also, distributed at the dinner, were handmade crosses and
hygiene packs compliments of VBS kids who put them together as part of a service project as well as fun Christian T‐Shirts for them to wear and enjoy (we spot‐ted a few wearing shirts given to them last year).
Thank you for making it possi‐ble to provide this ministry every year! If you have a ser‐vice or an idea of something that would be helpful to the workers for next year, please call us! If you’ve never volun‐teered at the Carnival Worker’s Dinner, join us next year, it will touch your heart.

Rummage Sale Fall is coming upon us so it is time to clean out your ga‐rage, closets, kitchen cabinets and maybe even the trunk of your car. The United Methodist Women would appre‐ciate all of the "treasures" you find for their annual rum‐
mage sale on Saturday, September 15, from 9:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. We will begin collecting your treasures the week of August 27 through September 14. Please leave your donations in the Fellowship Hall against the north wall. Unfortunately, we have some restrictions this year
as the organization that picks up our unsold items will NOT accept the following items:
computers,
computer screens,
televisions,
large exercise equipment, or
clothing.
If you would like to help set up the sell on Septem‐ber 13th & 14th from 9:00 a.m. to noon please feel free to join us. The money we make will all be do‐nated back into the community so come, look around on Saturday, September 15, and help the UMW and the community.

Family Ministries is hosting a “Trunk or Treat” during the
Halloween hot dog roast.
What is a “Trunk or Treat” event? Children go from trunk
to trunk collecting candy or trinkets from volunteers who
have decorated their vehicles to serve as a backdrop for
this “spooktacular” event! Candy and trinkets will be pro‐
vided by Family Ministries. It will be held in the Church
parking lot close to the shelter house.
We encourage trunk or treat participants to dress up.
Please keep in mind that this event is for children so we
ask that all costumes be “kid” friendly and just friendly in
general. We don’t want to scare the
little ones.
If you are interested in participating in

Halloween Hot Dog Roast
Family Ministries is hosting the annual Halloween Hot Dog Roast on October 31, 2012 from 5:00pm through
7:00pm. We have a great time serving dinner to the children and families of our community. HOWEVER, WE NEED YOUR HELP. Volunteers are needed to help set up, serve and clean up.

Nursery Ministry: children 0-36 months old
Sunday Morning: Worship Loving, tender care is provided by a consistent staff during all three worship services every Sunday morning (8:30, 9:45; 11:10).
Mommy & Me
Mommy & Me’s first class will be Thursday, September 13. Limited to 10 per class, the fall class is currently full. But, if you are inter‐ested in attending, please contact Lydia @ 834‐1787.
Sunday Worship 9:45 Children begin in the sanctuary with their family and are released to their Sunday School classes after the “Children’s Moment”. The Sunday School superinten‐dent and some of the Sunday school teachers escort
the children to their classes. We en‐courage new students to be escorted by their parents to see which room their child is in and to meet the teach‐ers. Parents with younger children are also encouraged to walk their child to
their class. Older children can walk independently to their classes. A hands‐on Bible curriculum is used. Par‐ents must pick‐up their children from the classrooms immediately after worship.
Sunday Worship 8:30 & 11:10AM Children begin in the sanctuary with their family and are released to a teacher after the “Children’s Mo‐ment.” The teacher takes the chil‐dren to Room 130. We currently are using new curriculum called, "Buck Denver asks...What's in the Bible?" The creator of Veggie Tales, Phil Vischer, designed this curriculum to walk kids through the entire Bible! Parent’s pick‐up children after the Worship Service.
The Wednesday night Christian Education program for children is beginning Septem‐ber 5, at 6:30 PM in Room 117. During this time they will have a Bible lesson, make crafts, have a snack and just have fun.

Children’s Choir Children’s Choir is for preschool thru 4th Grade. Practice will be during the 2nd service children's church. They will perform during the benediction of the first service and then at the beginning of the second service once a month .

The teen years are a crucial time for identity formation. Students begin to ask the question, "Who am I?" and too often, they let the wrong people an‐swer: musicians, peers, writers, actors, and even their own negative thoughts.
But those of us who have trusted in Jesus already have an identity that nothing can change. We find out who we are when we read God's Word, and in God's Word, we discover that our NEW identity is firmly rooted IN JESUS!
It's time to start believing we are who God says we are.

Change the World All Christians are called to "Follow," "Welcome,"
"Feed," "Heal," "Rescue," and "Go!" Beginning
Sunday, September 9, is a new sermon and Bible
study series based on "Change the World" by
Rev. Mike Slaughter, who is a United Methodist
pastor. This study can help our church move from being
"good" in missions, to becoming "great" in our outreach.
We all wonder at times who we are and why we are here.
While society emphasizes wealth, success and
the pursuit of pleasure, the truth is that we are
created by God in His image and our fulfillment
is found in pursuing His purposes for us. Join
other women this Fall for a 6 week study on Be‐
coming a Woman of Purpose beginning Sunday,
Sept. 9 at 4:30 for a quick walk in the park followed by
the study at 5:00 in Room 110. Study materials provided.

Holy Yoga
A recent study looked at Yoga's effects on decreasing in‐
flammation and after 6 weeks of Yoga, blood
tests of the participants revealed changes in 68
different genes responsible for decreasing in‐
flammation in cells. Researchers also found
reductions in stress and depression levels. So,
join us in the Narthex at 6:30 for a brief Bible Study fol‐
lowed by Holy Yoga. Bring a yoga mat or beach towel. and
wear comfortable clothing as we focus onto God reduce
our stress and take care of these bodies He has given us.

From Pastor Ben: Exciting New Fall Children's Church Curriculum! On Sunday, September 9th we will be kicking off our
brand new children's church curriculum during both our 8:30 and 11:10 services! This exciting new curriculum is called, "Buck Denver asks...What's in the Bible?" The creator of
Veggie Tales, Phil Vischer, designed this curriculum to walk kids through the entire Bible! It will be a fun and interactive way for your kids or grand kids to learn more about the Bible! Make plans to take your kids today!

Fair on Sunday, September 23rd from 9am to 11am in the Fellowship Hall. We would like to invite the congregation to join us for breakfast and an oppor‐tunity to discover more about the missions supported by the church and opportunities for individual involve‐ment. We have invited mission groups within the church as well as mission organizations supported fi‐nancially by the church to share information as well as
opportunities for involvement in their missions. This is
the perfect time for you to look for new ways to serve God. Please plan to stop by the fellowship hall on September 23rd and explore all the different opportunities for you to get involved and make a difference.
