Expedia, Inc., announced on August 5 that it will expand its Springfield operations by adding 500 new jobs. The company will hire for positions in customer service, financial operations, technical support and other roles that support its Expedia.com and Hotels.com online travel brands. Average annual salaries for the new positions will be $35,000 which exceeds the Greene County annual average of $33,924. The news followed an announce-ment in February that the company had leased 59,000 square feet of the former Springfield-Branson National Airport terminal. The company is renovating the facility and will begin occupying it this fall. When the expansion is complete, Spring-field will be home to nearly 800 jobs in Expedia’s back-office operations. “The Chamber and Springfield Business Development Corporation (SBDC) are pleased to work with Expedia on their expansion in Springfield, which is creating hundreds of quality jobs that
directly impact our community,” said John Wanamaker, president of SBDC, the eco-nomic development arm of the Chamber. “To have a company of Expedia’s caliber choose Springfield is tremendous news, further proving that Springfield is a great place to do business.” The announcement was the culmination of a process of collaboration between Expedia and Springfield’s Partnership for Economic Development that began nearly one year ago. The Partnership’s members, the Chamber, Greene County, the City of Springfield and City Utilities, assist
businesses that are relocating or expand-ing in Springfield. For Expedia’s expansion, that included working with the company to find appropriate real estate options, assisting in qualifying the labor force and leveraging incentives designed to spur job creation. The partners also assisted Expedia in securing services through SpringNet (a division of City Utilities) to meet the company’s extensive IT needs. “Working together we can accom-plish so much more than we ever could separately,” said Mayor of Springfield, Jim O’Neal. “This is a big day for our community.”

Local trust company provides a personalized touch for area investors
Trust Company of the Ozarks (TCO) provides investment, trust and Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) services, including investment management, revocable and irrevocable trusts, individual retirement accounts, conservatorships, personal representative, and custody. TCO is the only locally-owned trust and investment company in the Ozarks, and offers its services to individuals, families, businesses and foundations. The company’s core ownership includes 18 community banks and 35 individual shareholders. Forty-eight area banks with approximately 200 locations, attorneys, CPAs, and other financial professionals rely on TCO for trust and personal wealth management services for their customers and clients. When building client portfolios, TCO
recognizes the value of selecting individual stocks and bonds to meet the specific tax and investment demands of its clients. The professionals at TCO draw upon their knowledge and experience in trust and investment planning, administration, and portfolio management to go above and beyond the expectations of their clients. TCO continues to expand to accom-modate the demand for its services. As of April 30, the market value of assets under TCO’s management totaled over $489 million, said Dwight Rahmeyer, CEO and Senior Trust Counsel. TCO is confident that its growth is in response to its disci-plined approach to wealth management and security and its clients’ preference for the personalized approach only a locally-owned trust company can provide.

Each year Springfield hosts the Missouri Highways & Transportation Commission, a six-member bipartisan board that governs the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), for one of their monthly meetings. This year the meeting was held on August 4 at City Utilities. In honor of the visit to Springfield, the Chamber hosted the Commission and MoDOT staff for an event at Hammons Field on the evening of August 3. The dinner and Springfield Cardinals ballgame provided an opportunity for community leaders, transportation stakeholders and sponsors to visit with the Commis-sioners, thank them for their support, and discuss our successes and needs relative to transportation in the Springfield area.

An advocate. A mother. Friend. These are all words to describe Kim Hurshman. Hur-shman, graduate of Leadership Springfield Class XVI, was recently named the Local Sales Manager for KSPR and The Ozarks CW. With her dedicated and driven team of sales representatives, she works hard every day to lead and assist in growing local businesses through marketing and advertising. At a young age, Hurshman made the leap to television media sales at KY3, which offered her the opportunity to participate in Leadership Springfield. Hurshman says of her experience in Leadership Springfield, that she gained “a much greater knowledge of our community” and that it was an experi-ence she would “never trade”. When planning Communications Day for her classmates, Hurshman gave them a look at television that few get to see. Class XVI members put together a mock newscast, with classmates taking on roles of anchors, reporters and me-teorologists. A fun day, but a learning
experience for all to see what goes into keeping a community informed. The most important lesson she took from her experience in Leadership Spring-field was during an exercise to try and build a better mousetrap. Hurshman says the disagreements during the mousetrap discussion were good and that it taught participants to see things from a different perspective—perspec-tives they may have not seen without the discussion. Hurshman, a mother of two, currently serves as the Board Chairman for the American Diabetes Associa-tion—an organization that directly impacts her family. You see, both of Hurshman’s teenage boys have been diagnosed with Diabetes. Hurshman works tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for our local American Diabetes Association. In addition to the ADA, Kim has served great organiza-tions like the Parenting Life Skills Center, the Children’s Miracle Network and the Ozark Empire Fair. Getting people to look at their community differently and see where they can be an agent for positive change is what Leadership Springfield is all about—a lesson that Hurshman has carried with her to make her a great leader in our community.
