Letter to Our Readers It’s that time of year …. the start of the 2015 – 2016 Football Season! Whether it’s the NFL pros or college ball, get ready to watch all the games. If you prefer going out to a favorite sports bar to see your teams play, we have a treat for you. Our writers have put together a Where To Watch All The Games chart showing what some of the area’s top sports bars are offering …… # TVs, drink & app specials during the games, half-time activities and prize & giveaways. All to help you decide where to go to enjoy each “Gameday.” Speaking of popular sports bars, if you haven’t yet visited Fireside Grill & Bar in Marlboro, put it on your list of things to do. This comfortable tavern-style restaurant just celebrated its 4th anniversary in business. Having opened in August 2011, it has become a favorite for many as the place to go to enjoy good, hearty food while watching your favorite sports teams on one of their 50 large screen TVs. Turn to our Restaurant Profile in this issue to learn more. There’s live music, country jams, hip hop and Jersey Shore rock. It all takes place when the band Under Pressure performs for audiences. This group, with the three Salerno brothers (Nick, Chris & Joe), have been entertaining Jersey fans for over seven years. They mix genres in order to keep their fans involved and in constant motion. Read more about Under Pressure in this issue’s Band Profile. Born in Newark, NJ and although raised in a neighborhood of “wiseguyz”, Carlo Bellaro was influenced rather by the likes of Abbott & Costello, Don Rickles and Sam Kinison. Today, Carlos is a standup comedian and a veteran TV and stage performer. He considers comedy “a full time gig”. Learn more about Carlos in this month’s Comic Relief feature. As Summer comes to an end and the Fall season approaches, get out and enjoy the weather and the many seasonal activities available. Visit some of the region’s dining venues and stop in to listen to some good local music at a favorite pub or tavern. Let Venues NJ be your guide.

The Fireside Grill & Bar is celebrating its fourth year of welcoming patrons through its doors. Opening in August of 2011, this comfy cozy tavern- style restaurant with a sports theme continues to draw patrons, both new and old, with its hearty meals, tempting appetizers, refreshing libations, and its welcoming staff. The eatery on Route 79 in Marlboro replaced the vintage Fireside Inn that sat on the site for decades. In a conversation with General Manager Jon Barbely, he said the Fireside seats over 250 patrons in its cozy dining room and sports bar.
The design of the restaurant is patterned after a football s t a d i u m , a c c o r d i n g to Barbely, c o m p l e t e with artwork
of noted sports players on the walls. Those who enjoy sports will feel at home here at the Fireside Grill & Bar, but you don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy this atmosphere.
In addition to the great food and beverages and the sports stadium theme, the Fireside Grill & Bar now has a Patio Bar providing a sense of outdoor dining all year round. Diners can now enjoy their meal and drinks in the comfort of an enclosed all season “outdoor venue” year long. “We built it to mimic the inside of the restaurant with its sports stadium design and decor so it looks like it belongs here,” Barbely said. The Patio Bar expands the sports theme and Barbely said it is “the place to be during football season.” “People love it out there,” Barbely said, adding that patrons enjoy the comfort of the enclosed Patio Bar and love watching their favorite games there. “It’s very popular with our customers. They love
to be able to cool off in the summer while enjoying their meal and the games. They especially love it during football season. You feel like
your outside but it’s heated. It’s comfortable all year round no matter what the weather is.” Enjoy your frozen Margarita, craft beers or specialty drinks, along with a plethora of appetizers, in this new venue that allows a view of the grounds from window seats in front of the beautiful spacious glass enclosure. Or, if you prefer, you can enjoy the comfort of gathering around the large inside bar with its many large, flat screen TVs.
Executive Chef Fabian Barrios continues to expertly prepare fresh and delicious meals at the Fireside and has crafted a menu that has something for everyone. Start with a tasty appetizer such as the El Nacho Grande, Cheddar and Jack cheese, fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, and salsa with beef chili or grilled chicken. Indulge in crispy Potato Skins, cheddar Jack cheese and bacon with sour cream. For the health conscious there is the Veggie Pot Stickers, steamed dumplings filled with cabbage, water chestnuts and carrots, with ponzu sauce or Edamame, soy beans, steamed in their pods, dusted with sea salt. Entrees are sure to please with a wide selection of yummy dishes including handmade burgers grilled to order, such as the Chipotle Bacon Cheeseburger bacon, cheddar jack cheese, jalapenos and Chipotle mayo or the juicy Texan Burger, which serves up the burger smothered in sweet BBQ sauce and Bacon Bleu Cheese crumbles. All burgers are served hot and juicy with lettuce, tomato, and signature crispy fresh fries or waffle cut sweet potato fries. Also served up here at Fireside are juicy, tender USDA choice steaks. And, fish lovers will enjoy the Wood grilled Salmon, also on the menu of goodies to indulge in. A very popular dish at the restaurant is the house- made Fish and Chips, consisting of market Cod dipped in a homemade Yeungling batter, served with cole slaw, tartar sauce and French fries. House specialties at this fine restaurant include the Smoke House Ribs which are house-smoked on
site and served with three different types of sauce - Smoke House Ribs topped with homemade sweet BBQ sauce, Bourbon Bacon
topped with bourbon BBQ sauce and diced bacon, and Mango Jalepeno finished with a house made mango jalapeno
sauce and topped with mango salsa. “They are all smoked out back with hickory and our signature rub,” Barbely said adding that the ribs are “always on the menu.” Guests at this eatery will also find great Happy Hour specials, Monday through Thursday from 12 Noon -7 p.m. and on Friday from 12-8 p.m. Daily lunch and dinner specials are also on tap here. Enjoy the wonderful tempting specials as you view your favorite games on one of the 50 flat screen TVs which offer all the sports you can handle. Other great specials include half-price appetizers after 10 p.m. seven-days-a-week.
“We also offer over 40 beers on draft: domestic, imported and craft, as well as an ever-changing cocktail menu,” Barbely said. In addition, the Fireside also offers weekly specials with a different treat every day. Visit on Monday where $3.50 craft beer pints are on tap all day; Tuesday is Trivia Night when guests can enjoy $2.50 Yuengling pints, $4 Absolut drinks and give-a-ways from 9 p.m. to close; Wednesday is half-price appetizer night from 8 p.m. to close with $2.50 Miller Lites on tap as well; visit on Thursday where ½ price wine by the bottle is available all day & night, along with $3 Corona Lights from 9 p.m. to close. Visit on Friday and enjoy an extended Happy Hour until 8 p.m.
“We serve families, young adults and people of all ages and have something for everyone,” Barbely said. “Our dining room is comfortable for families, our private rooms are great for parties, get-togethers and corporate events and we have the sports bar and patio bar. It’s a great mix. We really attract all ages and have a little bit of everything.”

...there is something for everyone
There’s live music, a DJ country jams, hip-hop beats and Jersey Shore rock with a southern twist when Under Pressure takes the stage. Prepare for hours of non-stop entertainment from a band that can make everyone down to party that even comes with a championship pedigree.
Under Pressure has been performing for seven years, though the current lineup is still relatively new. The Salerno brothers, Chris on guitar, Nick on bass and Joe on drums, are original members of the band. Within the past year they have added Mike Zdeb on guitar and Becca Wahoff on lead vocals. Zdeb joined after spending four years in an original band. After spending years touring he wanted a gig where he could stay closer to home. Wahoff on the other hand became a member after moving away from home. Originally from Missouri she was in Pennsylvania for a few years before coming to New Jersey and joining Under Pressure. Previously she had been in
other bands, as well as performing in some plays including Motherhood Out Loud and The Scarlet Pimpernel.
The party never stops with the band pumping out dance, pop-punk, country and hip-hop hits and with Nick “DJ-ing” in between sets to keep the crowd into the show. Mixing up different genres can be tricky, but they can still find songs that go well together. “A lot of the songs have a common element whether it’s keys or timing.” he explained. “We try to mix everything up and make everyone happy.” They’ll also bring custom party favors and handouts to really make an impression on the crowd even long after the show is over.
Under Pressure has even had the opportunity to play at Giants, Jets, and Devils home games. They’ve played a few games over the past few years at MetLife Stadium, entertaining fans at the Bud Light Party Plaza as they enter the gates and head to their seats. Playing for the Devils crowd was even more of an amazing experience for the band as they weren’t just playing a regular season game; they were getting the crowd pumped for the 2012 Stanley Cup final playing before games in Championship Plaza.
The crowd at a championship is naturally animated and they were just happy to be a part of such a massive party. “There were a lot of events going on at the same time we were playing,” said Joe. “There was a marine that scaled down the
stadium building and waved the Devil’s flag, while we were playing. The Devils cheerleaders were out there with us. It was just a huge party with thousands and thousands of people there.” They just had to keep the party vibes going and when the energy is as palpable as it is when playing for one of the oldest trophies in sports, it’s not a hard thing to do. “When you play the Stanley Cup you don’t have to bring people, the crowd is built in and they’re pumped,” said Nick. “They’re all about winning and they’re all about their team and they want to hear anything that’s going to get them going even more.”
Under Pressure usually plays at least twice a week, bumping that up to as many as five or six times during the summer. They even make it out of New Jersey occasionally, having played as far north as Vermont and south as West Virginia. They were previously the house band at Margaritaville in Atlantic City for a while. But around the shore they can typically be seen often at Nardi’s Tavern in Long Beach Township, Grasshopper Off The Green in Morristown and Baker’s Water Street Bar and Grille in Toms River.

Editors Note: I kept thinking about this fact as I sat there at my local sports bar last Sunday, watching a man in his mid-thirties devolve into an actual jackass, braying at the television and kicking tables when he didn’t like a call . For the 1 o’clock game, The Jackass proudly wore his Eli Manning Giants jersey, an “official” Giants Super Bowl baseball cap, and ran around the sports bar with his Blackberry, rattling off updates from his multiple fantasy teams for everyone to hear. When the 4 o’clock games started, The Jackass changed into a Brett Favre jersey and began rooting for the Jets... and their division rivals, the New England Patriots, because he took the Pats and the money line earlier that day. But there is a silver lining to this nightmare performance -- he provides a wonderful example of how not to behave when watching football in a bar. [While these rules originated some time ago, they still apply ]
7. Thou Shalt Not Wear the Jersey of a Player Who Now Plays for a Division Rival. A grown man wearing a sports jersey in public is questionable enough, but to have a guy who is now playing for a hated rival immortalized across your back is absolutely impermissible. This
goes for all of you Dolphins fans with Wes Welker jerseys, Redskins fans with Antonio Pierce jerseys, and Bears fans with Bernard Berrian jerseys. See also: Ty Law (Patriots), Nick Harper (Colts), Joe Horn (Saints), and Isaac Bruce (Rams). And don’t even think of getting a personalized jersey unless you’re under the age of twelve. No one cares that your name is Vinny, you like the Eagles, and that your favorite number is 69.
6. Thou Shalt Not Cheer Alone. Who doesn’t love a good chant? It’s one of the best reasons to go to a live sporting event -- a well-timed “De-FENSE” or “Let’s Go Steelers” can even help turn the tide in a game. But when you’re in a sports bar and no one else is joining in? Have some pride. There’s nothing fun -- for you, or anyone else in the bar -- about being the only person slamming your fists against a table, chanting “J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS!”
5. Thou Shalt Not Discuss Fantasy (or Gambling). Nobody on Earth other than you, your bookie and the guy you’re playing against in your fantasy league cares what bets and players you’ve got going on Sunday. No one cares! Leveraged the family mortgage on the Lions covering a double-digit point spread? Well, that was foolish. You shouldn’t have done that. But don’t moan and groan about it to everyone else -- everyone else is trying to
watch the game.
4. Thou Shalt Not Quote ESPN. As the Worldwide Leader slowly takes over the world, its various house organs (ESPN, ESPN.com, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU...) spend hours brainwashing sports fans on Sunday with endless pregame shows, web columns, and gales of forced laughter. This means a ban on lame nicknames (i.e. Chris Berman’s David “Green” Akers), quotes from Boogie Nights (Bill Simmons does this quite nicely already), and cogent analysis like “Eli Manning has been given the rite of passage.” You wouldn’t want Emmitt Smith to starve.
3. Thou Shalt Not Protest the Refs Too Much. Challenge rules should apply to fandom, as well. There’s nothing worse than a friend bitching and moaning about the calls all afternoon -- it’s not like your complaints are going to overturn a call from three time zones away. How’s this for a new rule? You are only allowed to yell about the refs three times during the game, with an unlimited amount of complaints in the final two minutes. If you’re wrong when you challenge the refs, though, you need to take a time out from drinking.
2. Thou Shalt Not Screw Up the Celebration. Nothing ruins a game-winning
touchdown quite like getting a fist pump in the stomach when you’re going for a high five. Instead of cleanly celebrating, you’re forced to slap and hug your way towards some kind of impromptu cheer, all the while feeling embarrassed. Forget the chest bumps, the handshakes, and the “raise the roof ” garbage -- figure out a plan before the game and stick with it until the end. If you win on the last play, there’s always room for an impromptu “Taco Bowl High Five.”
1. Thou Shalt Not Be a Jackass. For those of you who lack any social skills this means: Don’t curse in front of children. Don’t send your food back to the kitchen three times. Don’t leave the bar before your table gets the bill. Don’t shave your team’s logo into in your head. Don’t bring your grad school books and study. Don’t bring a home-made sign. Don’t paint your face. And most importantly, don’t bring a loaded gun and shoot yourself in the leg.

Yes, it really is that good. At this point, it would be almost a relief to report that “Hamilton” — the musical that opened at the Richard Rodgers Theater on Thursday, Aug. 6th — has shrunk beneath the bloat of its hype. Since it was first staged at the Public Theater this year, this brave new show about America’s founding fathers has been given the kind of worshipful press usually reserved for the appearances of once-in-a-lifetime comets or the births of little royal celebrities. During the past several months, while it was being pumped up and trimmed down for its move from the East Village to Broadway, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s rap-driven portrait of the rise and fall of Alexander Hamilton (this country’s first secretary of the Treasury) has been the stuff of encomiums in both fashion magazines and op-ed columns. You might not mortgage your house and lease your children to acquire tickets to a hit Broadway show. But “Hamilton,” directed by Thomas Kail and starring Mr. Miranda, might just about be worth it. A show about young rebels grabbing and shaping the future of an unformed country, “Hamilton” is making its own resonant history by changing

the language of musicals. And it does so by insisting that the forms of song most frequently heard on pop radio stations in recent years — rap, hip-hop, R&B ballads — have both the narrative force and the emotional interiority to propel a hefty musical about long-dead white men whose solemn faces glower from the green bills in our wallets.Washington, Jefferson, Madison — they’re all here, making war and writing constitutions and debating points of economic structure. So are Aaron Burr and the Marquis de Lafayette. They wear the clothes you might expect them to wear in a traditional costume drama, and the big stage they inhabit has been done up to suggest a period-appropriate tavern, where incendiary youth might gather to drink, brawl and plot revolution. But these guys don’t exactly look like the marble statues of the men they’re portraying. For one thing, they’re black or Hispanic. And when they open their mouths, the words that tumble out are a mix of contemporary street talk, wild and florid declarations of ambition and, oh yes, elegant phrases from momentous political documents you studied in school, like
Wash ing ton’s Farewell Address. And you never doubt for a second that these eclectic words don’t belong in proximity to one another. In mixing a broad range of references and rhythms in one percolating style, Mr. Miranda does what rap artists have been doing for years. It’s the immoderate language of youth, ravenous and ambitious, wanting to claim and initial everything in reach as their own. To quote from an oft-repeated phrase in this almost entirely sung-through show: “Hey, yo, I’m just like my country, I’m young, scrappy and hungry, and I am not throwing away my shot.” Those words are declaimed by Mr. Miranda as Hamilton, an impoverished orphan newly arrived in New York from St. Croix, but they might be tattooed on the consciousness of most of the characters in the play. These include Burr, Hamilton’s friend, rival and nemesis, who functions as a wondering, embittered narrator to his confrere’s meteoric rise. Washington, Jefferson and Madison.
T h e y are each fully rendered individuals, as are the three women in Hamilton’s life, his wife, Eliza, her sister, Angelica Schuyler and Maria Reynolds, the adulterous lover who brings about Hamilton’s fall from grace. The ballads that define the triangular relationship among Hamilton, Eliza and Angelica have a romantic urgency and ambivalence that had me in happy tears. Mr. Miranda’s Hamilton, a propulsive mix of hubris and insecurity, may be the center of the show. But he is not its star. That would be history itself, that collision of time and character that molds the fates of nations and their inhabitants. “Hamilton” is, among other things, about who owns history, who gets to be in charge of the narrative. One of its greatest accomplishments is that it leaves no doubt that these scrappy, adrenaline-charged young folks, with their fast way with rhyme that gives order to chaos, have every right to be in charge of the story here. “Hamilton” makes us feel the unstoppable, urgent rhythm of a nation being born.

Carlo BellarioII’ve been writing about the famous and not-yet famous over the last couple of years and I feel very fortunate to have met some truly wonderful
and funny people. Through this network of comedians I was led to this month’s comic, the very funny and talented Carlo Bellario. A veteran of TV and stage, he’s Jersey born and bred, and a talent to be reckoned with.
Venues-NJ: Carlo, I’ve done a little homework and I see you’re a Belleville guy. I have many friends from the Newark area and none of them ever thought about getting into this business. How did you decide this was the life for you?
Carlos Bellario: Well, I actually grew in Newark on North 12th street. And your question is very interesting in that we had a whole neighborhood full of wiseguyz and wise asses...but no one really ever got into stand-up comedy. We’ve had a ton of singers but no comedians. For me it all started back as a very young child; I was always the ham in the crowd, acting silly. I really liked Abbott & Costello, Don Rickles, but after seeing Sam Kinison I knew it’s what I wanted to do. I started in 1987 at a club in NYC called The Boston Comedy Club; it was an open mic show and on the show was an unknown comedian named Ray Romano. My first year I performed at over 300 open mics around the city and I’ve just kept going ever since.
V-NJ: I love that picture on your Facebook page with you and Don Rickles. What’s the story behind that?
CB: A close friend surprised me with tickets to Don as an early birthday gift. And after the show he took me backstage and I must openly admit that seeing Don I actually broke down in tears. Because these young comedians don’t even grasp the history, the magnitude, of the living legend that he is and it’s a real shame. Some people go their whole lives without ever getting an opportunity to meet someone who was such a huge influence on my career and who is someone for all comedians to emulate.
V-NJ: You have a pretty extensive resume, any more TV or movies we should know about?
CB: I enjoy acting very much and have been lucky to be on great TV shows like Law & Order S.V.U, The Blacklist, Blue Bloods, The Good Wife, and The Sopranos. I have done several movies like New Year’s Eve and Man on a Ledge, but nothing will ever take the place of being a comedian; that’s my first true love. I am currently focused on my new comedy club that I have recently opened in Bayville NJ, called The Animal House Comedy Club. It’s a small room with
potential and I am proud of it because as a comic, I know what to do and what not to do. Plus I am for the comics, I am not some money-hungry businessman just looking to cash in and who knows nothing about the comedy business. Don’t get me wrong I want to make some money as well, but my motives are pure. Now more than ever, all comedians need to keep our craft alive and support live comedy as much as possible. We all need to reinvent the business and spark the public’s interest back to live entertainment.
V-NJ: Is this your only source of income or do you have a “real” job?
CB: For me comedy is my full time gig and that’s about as real as it gets. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!
To learn more about Carlo and where you can catch him live, beside his own club in Bayville that is, check out his Facebook page and you can watch videos at his personal YouTube page as well.

Sadly, Selena Coppack’s aBostonian and doesn’t understand that the only real teams to root for are in NY and NJ. I jest of course (kinda, sorta). Coppack has been performing stand up for eight years and her new book, The New Rules For Blondes, launches in April.
Were you “the funny one” growing up?
I come from a very funny home and my older sister Laurel is a comedian, too. So I wasn’t really ‘the funny one’ at home so much as Laurel and I spent a lot of time writing musicals in our bedrooms, choreographing strange dance numbers, and watching “Saturday Night Live” since age 7. I think that my parents and oldest sister Emily are super hilarious, too. But yes, I’ve always been a bit of a ham and really interested in comedy and performing.
Along those lines, did you do all the school productions? Where’d you grow up? Or rather, if you’re anything like me, where were you raised?
I grew up outside of Boston and I did all of the school plays growing up -- I absolutely loved performing and the excitement of rehearsing and being in shows. I did some professional theater in Boston (at the Boston Baked Theater--now gone) and in high school I became interested in singing, too. I went to college in upstate NY where I majored in English and didn’t do any of the plays on campus; but I was in the only co-ed a cappella group on campus (the Hamilton College Hamiltones) and the improv troupe. After school I moved to Chicago
to study improv comedy further and it was improv that really led me to standup. I did improv for years and eventually I just got sick of working with other people, which makes me sound like a total curmudgeon, I know.
Stand up is very tough. You have to be able to take rejection. How’d you handle your first bomb, unless you’re the one comic who’s never experienced that?
The rejection is definitely hard and it’s something that everyone -- even my comedy idols -- have experienced at some point. Early on I think that I wanted the audience to like me, which can be dangerous territory, especially for female comedians. You have to be confident and feel entitled to be up there with the microphone and that took me a while to figure out -- how to just own the stage and trust myself more. I think of standup as like training a dog -- if you get out there and you’re confident and in control, the audience is with you. But if you exude a sense of nervousness or you seem insecure, they’ll eat you alive. I’ve been doing standup for about eight years and even now sometimes I’ll have a show where I can sense that certain people in the audience aren’t completely on board with me and it makes me feel nervous, but I know to just plow through it and keep on going and eventually I’ll hit on a joke or reference that wins them over.
Is this a means to an end? “SNL”, sitcoms, head writer--what’s your goal?
I definitely don’t think of standup as a means to an end and I think that comedians who do are pretty miserable people. It has to be its own reward or else you’re crazy to do this thing. But as far as my goal, mine is pretty broad: I’d like for my comedy (performance, writing) to pay for my life. I don’t know exactly how that will shake out, but I’d like my job to be what I love to do, which is write and perform comedy. I have a book coming out in April (The New Rules for Blondes, from It Books/HarperCollins), which I hope will open up new opportunities for me. It’s a collection of humorous essays celebrating and subverting the blonde stereotype, but it’s for readers of all hair colors.

their own relief centers, benefit organizations & fundraising programs. However, there is a
Central Call Center set up to get information & assistance for emergency services, housing assistance, food &

Does it seem that your day go by without you really accomplishing anything or not achieving what you set out to do? It takes purpose, logic and stability in our daily routine in order to meet the goals we set for ourselves. Planning and resolve are needed.
The same applies in business. Haphazard conduct without planning and a sense of purpose will not lead us down the road to success. If your goal is to operate a customer-friendly hospitality venue, one that is always “top-of-mind” among potential clientele, you need to create a “presence” -- either bold or subliminal …. or both -- within your market. Even during tough times, the pros who market their establishments or products maintain a “top-of-mind” presence. For example, Budweiser, Coca-Cola and McDonald’s actually increase their marketing investments during slow times in order to ensure a gain in market share as conditions improve.
In a competitive marketplace, the proprietor of a business needs to keep his name and his product offerings in front of his prospective customers. This does not require huge investments. It calls for proper timing, planning, continuity and the targeting of your message to your prime audience.
The design and implementation of a continuous presence within your marketplace and in the minds of your prospective customer base will substantially increase chances of success for your business.
