Martin Luther said that the mother changing her baby’s diaper is as much a minister of the gospel as the Archbishop of Mainz. In this and many ways Luther talked about the priesthood of all believers. Baptism calls and empowers each of us to proclaim good news in word and deed in our daily lives. Of this call to everyday ministry, Luther offered the example of the cobbler, whose call is to make good shoes and to treat his customers fairly. Each of us has countless opportunities every week to live our faith in loving service empowered by God’s grace.

This will be our focus from September 9 until Reformation Sunday. Luther’s Small Catechism will guide our conversation about faith in daily life. You will be challenged to reflect on what it looks like for you to do God’s work with your hands. Sermons and various emphases in worship, including visual, will encourage us to embrace many ways of serving God in everyday life. I am excited to explore with you one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans: “that all of life in Jesus Christ—every act of service, in every daily calling, in every corner of life—flows freely from a living, daring confidence in God’s grace” (from the ELCA website).

Please remember a couple of important upcoming dates. September 9 we return to two services on Sunday mornings at 8:30 and 10:45. September 5 Wednesday evening activities resume following this schedule:

In bold are two new things that I am very excited about. Every week at 6:00, Pastor Robin or I will lead a Bible study, sometimes on the upcoming readings for worship and sometimes a study of an entire book of the Bible or a biblical theme. This fall we’ll look at what the Bible has to say about faith in daily life. Because of the weekly Bible study, the Adult Forum will happen only one Sunday per month.

And around 8:00 we will conclude our Wednesday activities by gathering in the sanctuary for a simple singing of Holden Evening Prayer. It will be just the Holden service without any “extras,” a quiet and contemplative midweek break. Please join us!

Last (but certainly not least!), the Adult Forum for September will happen at 9:30 a.m. on the 16th with member Liv Charlton talking about her year interning at the White Violet Center for Eco Justice located in Saint Mary of the Woods, Indiana and owned by the Sisters of Providence. Liv is now back and just started studying agronomy at DMACC.

May these days of September lead us to deeper faith in God’s grace and new insights into living it out in everyday life.

The Season of Creation:A Series of Events in Honor of Earth

The Season of Creation is an international movement which begins on September 1, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and ends on October 4, the feast day of St. Francis, the patron saint of ecology in many traditions. All are invited to attend the 2018 series of free presentations on this year's theme: Walking Together Through Our Sacred Creation.

September 11 at 7 p.m. ~ The Seventh Generation: An Indigenous Perspective on Creation Care, with Rev. Nikira Hernandez-Evans. Plymouth United Church of Christ, Waveland Hall, 4126 Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines.

September 18 at 7 p.m. ~ The Spiritual Dimensions of Agriculture, with Dr. Fred Kirschenmann. Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, 1240 66th St, Des Moines.

September 25 at 7 p.m. ~ Climate Change Demands that the Dream of a World of Abundance Becomes a Reality, with Matt Russell. St. Pius X Catholic Church, Mary & Martha Room, 3663 66th St, Urbandale.

October 2 at 7 p.m. ~ Finding Hope in this Time of Environmental Crisis, with Bishop Laurie Haller, Iowa United Methodist Conference. Immanuel United Methodist Church, 2900 49th St, Des Moines.

This is the third year faith communities across the Des Moines Metro Area have participated in the Season of Creation, sponsored by the Interfaith Green Coalition and Iowa Interfaith Power and Light.

At its core, a pictorial church directory is a compilation of faces and names, but its function is far greater in that it often serves as a connector for bringing members of the congregation together. In the years since Windsor Heights Lutheran Church last compiled a pictorial directory, technological advancements have enhanced the possibilities for keeping pictorial directories current and useful.

With these factors in mind, the WHLC Congregation Council is initiating the process of creating a new and enhanced pictorial directory with the help of Dodgen Photography. Specifically, the hope is to create an online directory open to regular updates reflecting changing membership and member information. Paper copies for members without online access will also be available.

This initiative creates an opportunity for willing members to serve on a small task force to work with Dodgen Photography in facilitating the creative process. Task force responsibilities would include:

• Identifying and arranging areas in the church for photography and viewing

• Publicizing of photography dates

• Arranging for volunteers to schedule appointments for church members

• Providing receptionists to assist with appointment check-ins

• Distributing purchased photos at the church following completion

Since initiation of this important congregational tool cannot happen without the leadership of a short-term task force, the council is inviting you to consider joining the pictorial directory team. Questions may be directed to Bruce Dodgen, Paula Virtue, council members or the pastors.

To join the pictorial directory task force, contact Council President, Ken Popken. Those who would like to get a head start with their pictures can contact Dodgen Photography at 515-270-5031 to make an appointment for a studio session or even outdoors.

Backpack Blessing and Project

In coordination with God's Work our Hands and our first day of Fall programming, we will have our backpack blessing on Sunday, September 9. During Sunday school, our students will fill LWR (Lutheran World Relief) backpacks with the offerings we collected during VBS. These backpacks will then be sent to kids in need of them around the world. It will be an awesome way to kick off the programing year!

Children, Youth & Family Ministry

As we head into the new school year, a new and exciting season is upon us here at WHLC! However, before we jump into this new season, I would be remiss not to thank everyone one final time for all the contributions the WHLC family brought to our summer ministry. Our time in Houston for this year's Gathering was an amazing experience. We not only grow closer as a group and a church, but closer to God. We were thrilled to welcome so many news faces to VBS this year, and it was a unique experience to be able to tie what we learned during the week to what our high school students experienced in Houston. Such experiences, I am sure, will leave lasting impressions on everyone involved in the years to come!

We could not have done all of these things this summer without your support. We were supported through prayer, volunteering and donations through everything we did this summer. On behalf of our children and youth groups thank you all for your support! We hope you will be able to continue to provide your talents and skills to our ministry in the fall, and we are looking forward to a super exciting time of year!

We will begin with a delicious potluck lunch for our September gathering. After lunch, Pastor Chris and I will meet with the group to talk about what kind of programs you would like to see for next year. The topics can be related to the needs of seniors, either in our own congregation or for the larger community. After the discussion, we will play some board or card games. Bring your ideas and your favorite game! Hope to see you on September 6, beginning at 11:45 a.m. ~Pastor Robin

Years ago, many Des Moines area churches worked closely with LSI to welcome refugees to follow the biblical mandate to welcome the stranger. In doing so, we made for a better and a stronger Iowa. Today, LSI's work continues with post-resettlement services of education, family services and economic development. On September 27, at 11:30 a.m., we will celebrate this important LSI service with our 7th annual EMPOWER Luncheon to be held at the Valley Community Center in West Des Moines.

Ann Rowland is hosting a table for WHLC. Tickets are on sale for $50 each. There are handouts on the counter in the narthex that are next to the coffee.

Contact Ann Rowland with questions at 515-270-8180 or [email protected].

Wednesday evening activities and rehearsals will begin September 5, the Wednesday after Labor Day. Windsor Brass will begin rehearsing Monday night, September 10.

With fall programming rolling around, it means it's time for the return of the WHLC Community Meals! In order to prepare these awesome meals for the community each week, we need willing hands to join us in prepping, serving and cleaning up after the meal!

We are so fortunate to have a group of members here at WHLC who love preparing and being the lead cook for these community meals. Some of them are happy to help again this year, but to lessen their workload we are hoping to have a few new faces and groups helps with cooking some of the meals for this year!

We know most of you are not available to prep food in the hours prior to the meal, so we are introducing a new technique this year to the community meal: pre-cooked meals! With this new option, anyone can sign up to cook a meat or part of a meal in the days or week prior to the meal, and store it in the WHLC refrigerators. Then, the day of, the main meat or meals can be reheated, drastically cutting down the prep time prior to the meal! Our CHAOS high school group will be helping with a pre-cooked meal every other month or so. We hope this new option encourages people to bring their creative meal ideas forward!

A link to a sign-up sheet can be found on our homepage, or you can contact Zach if you are interested! Ellen Graham has offered to provide kitchen training to anyone who would like to learn. We hope you can help us as we prepare this awesome event to draw our WHLC congregation and community together for a meal and some fellowship!

Are you musical? If so, consider offering your musical gifts in the worship and praise of God through one of our music ensembles. All will begin their rehearsals in early September. Keep an eye on the calendar of events for more info. All ability levels are welcome.

The Alternative Worship Ensemble leads worship on Saturday evenings and one Sunday per month. Singers and instrumentalists are welcome. They practice at 4:00 on Saturday afternoons. If you have questions, contact Steve Dressel at [email protected].

Windsor Bells rehearses at 6:00 on Wednesday evenings from September - May and plays in worship at least once a month. Contact Marilyn Harvey with questions at [email protected].

Windsor Brass rehearses on Monday evenings at 8:00. All brass instruments are welcome. Windsor Brass plays once a month, usually on the last Sunday. Contact their director, Jon Lewis, if you’d like more information — [email protected].

Alleluia Choir welcomes anyone who is interested in singing. Rehearsals are from 7:00-8:00 on Wednesday evenings, and the choir sings at three services per month. Director Jim Cacciatore would be happy to answer your questions — [email protected].

It is not s secret where the key for the west storage room off of Parish Hall is kept. It was purposely put on a large wooden stick so that you would not put it in your pocket and take it home. Please be sure and return it when you are done using it, especially since there is not always someone on staff at church to help you out. Thank you! ~Linda Anderson
