Developing Each Student's Potential With A World-Class Education

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:

Welcome Back to School! It is an honor and privilege

to introduce myself as the interim principal at Novi High

School. I have worked here for fourteen years serving

as an administrator for six years and a teacher for eight.

I have a passion for teaching, learning, and growing. I am

so very grateful to have had the unique opportunity to

start my career here and I am elated to continue foster-

ing quality relationships with students, staff and parents

for many years to come. I believe that all students can

learn. It is my responsibility to ensure that our teachers

have the resources and skills to challenge our students

to think critically and gain new knowledge that they can

apply to their daily lives.

My greatest initiative this year will be to focus on elevat-

ing the essentials to radically improve student learning.

Over the summer, our staff read the book FOCUS by

Mike Schmoker. The essential things he addresses are

what we teach, how we teach, and authentic literacy.

Our staff will work diligently to implement best practic-

es surrounding these three areas. We will collaborate

regularly and hold each other accountable to ensuring

that our students’ needs get met to the best of their

abilities. We will use our Professional Learning Com-

munity time answering the following essential questions:

1. What is it we want all students to learn?

2. How will we know when each student has mastered

the essential learning?

3. How will we respond when a student experiences

initial difficulty in learning?

4. How will we deepen the learning for students who

have already mastered essential knowledge and

skills?

Over the past two years, our staff has been exploring

standards based grading. Standards based grading is a

refined way of reporting what students know and how

they demonstrate that learning. It focuses on proficien-

cy and tells what students actually learned. Our staff

will continue this work this year and we will effectively

communicate a timeline to you in regards to when we

will move towards having a standards based report card.

This is a district wide initiative that will assist parents

and guardians in identifying their child’s strengths and

weaknesses as learners.

An additional area of FOCUS for me this year is to es-

tablish a strong parent/school partnership. I will be

hosting a monthly meeting for parents/guardians on the

first Wednesday of each month. Meetings will be held at

8:30 a.m. in the Administrative Office. I am seeking your

input regarding how we best support the needs of our

Wildcats.

As a leader, I am committed to excellence rather than

perfection. I give each and every duty and responsibility

my best effort. I am constantly trying to improve myself

and those around me. I lead from the heart and realize

that a successful school is the result of partnerships be-

tween parents, guardians, students and staff. As your

interim principal, I want you to know that I am detail

oriented, student centered, approachable and available.

By working together, we can continue to move Novi

High School forward. I greatly appreciate the open line

of communication that we have as stakeholders and I

value your input or any constructive criticisms. Please

don’t hesitate to contact me with any concerns or ques-

tions. My direct line is (248) 449-1536 or you can email

me at [email protected]. Always remember, I am

here to serve you!

Best wishes for a strong start to the 2013-14 school

year. Let’s Go, Wildcats!!!

Nicole Carter

Interim Principal

The school theme for 2013-14 is SUPERHEROES… You

don’t have to wear a cape to be a hero. This is also our

homecoming theme. We are encouraging all Wildcats

to…

Be a Hero in the Hallway

Be a Hero in the Classroom

Be a Hero in Extracurricular Activities

(Sports/Clubs)

Be a Hero in the Atrium/Cafeteria

Communication Protocol General Information The district website (www.novi.k12.mi.us) is a great place to start. The homepage will highlight the most current events, news, school closings and upcoming important events. Select Novi High School from the Schools tab on the green bar at the top and the high school homepage opens up. In the right hand column are links that will take you to a plethora of valuable information. Click on Documents/Forms/Newsletters for general information relating to the High School Calendar of Events, policies, procedures and forms including the Attendance Policy, Parking Procedures, IB and AP courses, lunch menu, health procedures, etc. Back on the high school homepage you will find the Daily Announcements which are updated each morning and highlight the ongoing business and events that occur at Novi High School. These are the same announcements that scroll each day on the monitors throughout the building for the student body. Paper copies of the newsletters and other important documents can also be found in the high school Administrative Office for those without internet access.

Counseling, Career and Student Services Selecting the Counseling, Career and Student Services link will take you to a variety of documents and procedures, from gradua-tion requirements and the scheduling process to emotional and social support. There are also instructions on how to request a tran-script, helpful links for career planning and information on preparing for college. Your child’s counselor is a great resource and sup-port system for the journey through high school.

Classroom, Teacher, Grades: Questions & Concerns Each semester all teachers are required to provide a course syllabus outlining their grading procedures and classroom expectations. The syllabus is given to students and requires both students and parents to read and return it with signatures. All questions or con-cerns regarding a class, teacher, grades, curriculum, assignments, etc. should begin with the classroom teacher. Teachers can be reached via email or telephone. Email addresses can be found in the Staff Directory under the District tab. If you need further as-sistance after contacting the teacher, you may contact your child’s counselor and then your child’s building administrator. Your child is assigned the same counselor and administrator for all four years to build supportive relationships and consistency. Please see page 4 if you have questions about who your child’s assigned counselor or administrator is.

Student Concerns Depending on the nature of your concern, you may want to start with your child’s counselor, assigned administrator or the School Resource Officer. We also have on staff two social workers and a teacher consultant who may be of assistance for issues related to special education, emotional or social hardship and referrals for outside support. To provide you with the best service, it is important that you make an appointment with the necessary personnel. The Novi Community School District has a partnership with Novi Youth Assistance that can provide an extra layer of support for students and families. The initial contact is done through a referral from the school.

MISTAR ParentPortal and StudentConnection (formerly Zangle Parent/Student Connect) MISTAR ParentPortal is a tool that allows parents and students to check current grades and attendance at any time of the day or night. Found under Links on the high school homepage, parents can click on MISTAR ParentPortal and enter their pin with their password to access information. If you have forgotten your pin or password, you can click on Need your login information?, and enter an email address that is unique to you. Login information will be sent to that email address. Note that the email address cannot be an address shared by both parents. Students may view the same information using MISTAR StudentConnection by entering their student identification number and password. If you encounter any problems, please call Cathy Fegert in the Attendance Office, at 248-449-1507. Note that the system is being upgraded by Oakland Schools and is not fully operational at this time. We hope that it will be available soon—thanks for your patience.

High School Electronic Mail List This electronic mail list is used to communicate urgent information and reminders. We try to limit use of this notification system so that when you receive a message you know that it is important—be aware that it may be for a school emergency. We also use it as a tool to remind parents and staff of important dates or events/programs in the community that we are in partnership with. If you have not signed up for the High School Electronic Mail List you may do so on the Documents/Forms/Newsletters link from the high school homepage. Select High School Electronic Mail List on the top left of the page, fill in the required information and click sub-scribe.

Fine Arts The Fine Arts tab has links for Communication Arts, Performing Arts and Visual Arts. The Performing Arts link will then take you to information for Dance, Music and Theater. Check out the Band Website (under the High School Music heading) for current and up-coming band activities.

Athletics The Athletics tab contains team information for boys and girls sports as well as the sports schedule. On this webpage you can find the contact information for the Athletic Office. You can also follow Athletics and other extra curricular activities on Facebook and Twit-ter.

Facebook and Twitter Novi High School has a Facebook fan page and a Twitter account. The Facebook page is an announcement/informational fan page and allows kids and adults immediate access to day-to-day school information. The Twitter account is fed from the Facebook account so all announcements will be “pushed” from Facebook. You may access both Facebook and Twitter from the District webpage under Social Media.

We hope this helps to clarify how to access information and whom to contact with questions and concerns. Again, it is important to contact the proper personnel and set up an appointment if a meeting is necessary.

Call the attendance hotline and give the following information:

please speak slowly and spell the first and last name of your child

reason for early dismissal

the time your student needs to check out

if and where your student will be picked up (specify which parking lot)

whether your student will be returning to school

In the event of a last minute appointment, please call the attendance secretary at 248.449.1507 to ensure the message is received before your child needs to leave. Please refer to the Novi High School Attendance Policy for further information.

Dress and Personal Grooming

Whenever student attire is disruptive to classroom activity or creates a safety hazard, the student will be required to change before continuing with classes.

School is a place of business and requires businesslike clothing. This means that bare midriff, bare shoulders, short skirts/shorts or "Soffe" shorts ( 30% of the leg must be covered), sheer or see-through materials, halter tops, spaghetti strap tops, side cutout shirts, hats/hoods or headgear (including wave caps, scarves, sweat bands, etc.), undershirts and visible undergarments are not permissi-ble. Items of clothing that advertise or condone the following will not be permitted: the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or any unau-thorized organization deemed to be in conflict with school policies and practices. In regards to skirts, dresses, and/or shorts, we are requiring that students cover 30% of their leg length. Leg length is determined by measuring from the top of the leg to the floor in bare feet. The skirt hem is measured from the floor in bare feet as well. Specific guidelines are available from the student’s adminis-trator upon request. In regards to waistlines (for both males and females), the top of the waistline is to be worn above the hips. Stu-dents who are not in compliance with the dress code will be asked to put on more appropriate clothing and, if none is available, may be asked to go home to get suitable attire. Protective glasses, provided by the school district, are required in classes where hot flu-ids, chemicals, and flying objects could cause injury to the eyes. Classroom teachers will determine the appropriateness of safety and protective clothing in their classroom.

Novi High School Office Hours

The High School Administrative Office, Attendance Office and Student Service Center are open Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. During the school year, if you wish to reach a teacher during his or her conference hour please call the Administrative Office at 248.449.1500.

Student Drop-off/Pick-up

Your help is needed during daily student drop-off and pick-up times. Due to the heavy flow of traffic on Ten Mile Road, especially in the morning, it is suggested that students arrive early to avoid the last minute rush.

Student drop-off and pick-up will occur at the Ten Mile Road entrance to the building. Students should not be dropped off or picked up from the Taft Road entrance since this area is designated for bus drop-off and pick-up.

Parents can assist us in making the Ten Mile Road parking lot safer and more efficient for all concerned. Parents who are dropping off students are asked to use the entrance near the east side of the library. Upon entering the drive, parents should proceed down the

Page 7

driveway to the front of the building and drop their child off at the sidewalk. When exiting, parents are asked to form two lanes, one which will turn right onto Ten Mile and one that will turn left onto Ten Mile. The visitor parking lot is to be used by visitors only. Stu-dents who drive to school will enter the Ten Mile parking lot near the Civic Center entrance at the light.

Thanks for your assistance in helping everyone get to their destinations quickly and safely.

Student Parking

Student parking is available in three lots. The lots are called the North Lot (Ten Mile parking lot), West Lot (Taft Road, West wing) and the South Lot (Taft Road, near the football field). Students can sign up for a parking privilege and decal for $50.00. Parking privileges will be issued only to students who have a valid driver’s license, and show proof of insur-

ance and car registration. Parking decals must be properly displayed at all times. Anyone who changes cars during the school year is required to register the new car with Mrs. Kathy Miller, in Attendance Office B, and purchase a new decal for $5.00. Students will not be able to access their cars during school hours. Students leaving campus must have proper parent/guardian permission and must sign out in the Attendance Office before leaving campus. Parking on campus is a privilege and it is our expectation that all stu-dents will comply with the rules outlined in the parking contract.

According to the Oakland County Health Division at least 80% of learning is mediated through vision. Impaired vision is one of the most common health problems affecting children and by high school graduation one third will have a vision problem requiring correction. Michigan Public Health code, Act 368, recommends vision screening for ninth graders.

To meet the screening needs of these students the Oakland County Health Division offers free vision screening by appointment at the North Oakland Health Center and South Oakland Health Center locations. Parents can call 248-424-7070 to schedule an appoint-ment and take advantage of this free service offered by the OCHD.

Developing Each Student’s Potential With a World-Class Education

August 28, 2013 Dear Parents of the Novi Community School District and Novi Community Members: Last week the State of Michigan released the new Michigan School Accountability Scorecard. Using a color-coded system, the new state ‘scorecard’ reflects the progress of each school and district on goals established by the state. The range of colors, from green (highest), to lime green, yellow, orange, and red (lowest), do not identify achievement. The colors indicate progress on achieving the building and district goals as assigned by the state.

In presenting this scorecard the state would have you believe that each school rated in a similar color category has similar student achievement. That is simply not the case. For example, here are two schools both rated yellow by the state. The Novi School clearly has higher achievement than the school from another district, substantially higher in some cases, yet both schools are rated yellow.

Math Achievement (Percent Proficient)

Other District School

Novi District School

All students 70.12% 92.34% Bottom 30% 17.60% 74.36% American Indian 0.00% - Asian 86.36% 95.41% African American 44.44% 66.67% Hispanic 43.75% 100.00% Native American 80.00% - Two or more races - 100.00% White 73.35% 90.78% Economically disadvantaged 59.22% 83.33% English Language Learners 25.00% 81.25%

s with Disabilities

The state rating system suggests that both of these schools have similar student achievement. That is not the case. The Novi school is rated yellow because it has different and more challenging goals to work on based on past performance.

Developing Each Student’s Potential With a World-Class Education

All of Novi’s schools are rated yellow or orange even though on the most recent MEAP and MME exams, student achievement was high and overall our students ranked among the highest performers in the county and in the state. In truth our data does indicate that while our subgroups also continue to achieve well above state averages we still have work to do.

When we created our District Goals in 2011 we started with commitment to the growth and achievement of every student in our district as our first two goals:

1) The Novi Community School District will ensure that each student will make no less than one year’s growth in one year’s time.

2) The Novi Community School District will ensure that all students achieve at a high level. (There will be no achievement gaps.)

We continue to identify how we can provide support where appropriate and enrichment where needed to ensure that every student will make no less than one year’s growth in one year’s time and to ensure that every student is making progress towards achieving at a high level.

As a parent, I would want to know that the schools I send my child to are strong and vibrant. I would want the best for my child. Let me assure you that the schools in the Novi Community School District, our schools, are among the strongest in the State of Michigan. On every measure – MEAP and MME results, daily attendance, graduation rate, subgroup performance, and success after high school – our schools achieve at among the highest levels in the state. The goals that we have for set for ourselves challenge us. Our focus is on meeting the needs of every single child, ensuring the each child makes growth, and helping each child achieve at a high level.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to ask your building principal. Feel free to call or email me as well.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Matthews

Seniors & College Application Information

All students in the class of 2014 met with their counselor last June to discuss their senior year and information regarding the college applica-tion process. The information covered at this meeting can be found on the counseling, career & student service website within the meetings folder. http://www.novi.k12.mi.us/hs/ccss/studentmeetings/ Also, all seniors received a copy of the Senior Newsletter at registration. This includes important reminders and additional information to help with college application completion.

Academic Support Strategies

Let’s start the school year off on a positive note! Here are a few things you can do to help improve your child’s success:

1. If you have not done so already, open the lines of communication between you and your child’s teachers. Parent Connection in MiStar is a useful tool as well as phone calls or emails.

2. Have a daily discussion with your child about at least one current course and what topics are being covered, what types of assignments are being completed, when the next assessment will take place, etc.

3. If you believe your child may require tutoring in order to be success-ful, you or your child can pick up tutoring resources in the student service center or you can inquire about tutoring with your child’s counselor.

4. Make sure your child is present at school in all classes each and eve-ry day. Missing lecture and other direct instruction from teachers is one of the main reasons students are unsuccessful.

5. Ask your child about Academic Advisory and what they accomplished during that class period each Wednesday. This is an opportunity to get additional help, complete make-up work, or work with a current teacher on a variety of things.

6. Good Luck during the 2013-2014 school year!
