LETTER FROM THE DISTRICT SUPERIOR

In 1889 the future Pius X, then Bishop of Mantua, spoke in praise of

Christian peace in one of his sermons:

‘Let us ask for peace, peace as it is understood and desired by the chil-

dren of God: this is a peace worthy of the name, which Holy Scripture

in no way separates from Truth , Justice and Grace: it is the tranquil

performance of the Christian law, the peaceful development of works

of faith and charity, the public affirmation of the truths and the precepts

of the Gospel, the conformity of human laws and institutions with the

doctrines and moral teachings of Jesus Christ, the unceasing resistance

to the prince of darkness and all those who propagate his perverse max-

ims.’

Later, as pope, Pius X feared that there would be an all-out war in

Europe. Indeed Cardinal Merry del Val testified that on many occasions

Pius X had in 1911 and 1912 predicted the unleashing of the Great

War. When it became clear in 1914 that war was imminent the pope

was profoundly shaken nonetheless. When the Austrian Ambassador

My dear brethren,

6

came to announce the declaration of war on Serbia and asked for a

blessing for the imperial armies Pius X replied: “Tell the Emperor that

I can bless neither war nor those who have desired war. I bless peace.”

On August 2nd the Pope published an exhortation, which was to be his

last pontifical act, urging Catholics of the entire world, whichever

camp they belonged to, to turn to “Him from Whom alone help can

come, Christ, the Prince of Peace and mankind’s all merciful Mediator

with God.” The pope’s soul was indeed torn by the most painful sor-

row for the salvation and life of so many individuals and peoples, and

all the testimonies agree that the outbreak of the World War pro-

foundly shattered Pius X and that the news of the first battles over-

whelmed him with suffering. Suffering from a bronchial-pulmonary

condition the pope offered his poor life as a holocaust so as to prevent

the massacre of so many of his children. Fortified by the last Sacra-

ments he expired on August 20th uttering an act of trust in the Ve-

netian dialect, “Jesus, Joseph and Mary, I give you my heart and my

soul.”

***********

Whilst the centenary of St Pius X’s ‘birthday into heaven’ should be a

joyful occasion, it is alas marked by ongoing conflicts in different parts

of the world, not least in the Middle East, precisely because man seeks

an absence of war rather than that true peace of which Bishop Sarto

had spoken.

Hence our thoughts and prayers are with those suffering in Iraq and

Gaza, not least ‘those of the household of the Faith.’ Details of how to

sponsor a Christian family may be found on the website of the Saint

Thomas the Apostle Chaldean Catholic Eparchy in the United

States at: www.helpiraq.org as well as at "Adopt a Christian from

Mosul" campaign at asia.news.it/en

In preparation for St Pius X’s feastday on 3rd September I have in-

cluded a novena prayer and litanies elsewhere in this newsletter. As

per this issue’s ‘servers’ corner,’ it would be laudable for the Relics of

our heavenly patron to be exposed for veneration in our different chap-

els and churches in the course of this centenary year.

Winners of the St Pius X centenary raffle will be announced on 3rd

September, the first and second prizes being places on the Society’s

October 2014 pilgrimage ‘in the footsteps of St Pius X.’ This pilgrim-

age concludes with the Christ the King weekend in Lourdes, whose

precise schedule can be found on the Society’s website dici.org

The three day event is offered in thanksgiving for the gift of the Faith

and for the grace to conserve fidelity to the combat for Tradition, for

the reign of Christ the King, for the triumph of the Immaculate Heart

of Mary, and for the Holy Catholic and Roman Church.

In attendance will be the three bishops of the Society of St Pius X , the

major-superiors the international seminaries, and representatives of

the traditional religious communities.

For other news:

Saint Michael’s School

The school again obtained excellent results in the public examinations

having achieved a 100% pass-rate in grades A-C at GCSE level.

Congratulations also go to Old Michaelian Charlie Flynn who won a

gold medal for boxing at the Commonwealth Games this summer in

his native Scotland. His courage was not restricted to the boxing-ring

as he publicly manifested his Faith by making the sign of the cross on

the awards-podium as well as wearing prominently the Brown scapu-

lar for his media interviews.

Vocations

I am happy to announce also that one of the boys from the school, by

name David Seeber, who passed his A-levels this summer, has been

accepted at the Society’s seminary in Flavigny, France. Additionally

member of staff Mr Jeffrey Godber will be joining the Traditional

Capuchins, also in France, and plans to enter as a Postulant this au-

tumn. Also, Mr Charles Byrne of Ireland is set to recommence his

studies at the Society’s American seminary of Winona. Hence we do

well to pray for the perseverance of these new candidates as well as

for our existing four seminarians in Econe and Winona.

Rosary Tallies

The Society’s international Rosary Crusade, which ended on Pente-

cost Sunday, resulted in a grand total of over six million rosaries, with

some 49,453 coming from GB and 18,500 received to date from Ire-

land. Deo gratias et Mariae!

Canterbury pilgrimage

Many thanks for the generous second collection towards this year’s

successful Canterbury pilgrimage. Totals from the different Priories

are to be found elsewhere in this newsletter. A record 150 pilgrims set

off from Rochester on the two and a half day walk to Canterbury, with

some 200 souls in attendance on the final day.

Athlone

Just as this newsletter goes to press on the Fesat of the Immaculate

|Heart of Mary, I just have received news that at long last the planning

permission has been granted for the renovation of Court Devenish

House. Fr Walliez, the new prior, sang a Te Deum in Corpus Christi

Church to mark the occasion!

With every good wish and blessing,

Father Paul Morgan

Strange to the Convert

Money Money plays a very prominent role in the Catholic Religion. The priest of-

ten mentions it from the pulpit and sometimes in vigorous language. Hardly

has the money offered at the door stopped tinkling when the Offertory col-

lection begins, and that is only just finished when the Post-Communion col-

lection starts. Then there are whist drives, jumble sales and raffles. On top

of these, parish football pools may be an embarrassment to one trained in a

Protestant notion of gambling.

Necessary

It is all necessary. The expenses of a parish are enormous. There are no

‘Livings’ in the Catholic Church, no ancient endowments, central funds or

state aid in this country, on which to rely. Moneys and salaries and the up-

keep of the Church, house and property must come from collections taken at

the Offertory of the Mass. The priests’ house is really flats for two or three

bachelors and separate apartments for housekeeper and maid. It is expen-

sive. Most parishes have a large debt on the church to pay off and the inter-

est to find yearly. Nearly all have two schools to maintain and some as

many as four. Very many have to build one or two schools, receiving inade-

quate financial support from the Government. With such demands on them

and no sources of revenue outside the parish, the parish priests cannot be

fastidious about appeals for money.

Desirable

It is desirable that money should play a prominent part in the life of the par-

ish. The collection is not merely the obtaining of money to meet the bills. It

is a practical way in which the Christian can identify himself with the sacri-

fice offered at the altar. The man gives the price of a short period of his

weeks labour, the woman the price of a loaf or a small object of clothing for

her children, the young; the price of a simple pleasure. That is a proof of

their love.

There is a close connection between the money and the Mass. It builds the

church and maintains it, provides the vestments, chalice, bread and wine and

supports the priest. The giving of it is an important act of religion and even

if a parish had no financial worries, a collection would still be desirable.

Money should be integrated with the service of God. It is sanctimonious to

be disgusted with the jingling of coins during Mass.

NOVENA PRAYER to SAINT PIUS X

Glorious Pontiff, Saint Pius, devoted servant of our Lord and

loving child of Mary, I invoke you as a Saint in heaven. I give

myself to you that you may always be my father, my protector

and my guide in the way of holiness and salvation. Aid me in

observing the duties of my state of life. Obtain for me great

purity of heart and a fervent love of the interior life after your

own example. Pope of the Blessed Sacrament, teach me to love

Holy Mass and Holy Communion, as the source of all grace and

holiness and to receive this Sacrament as often as I can. Gentle

father of the poor, help me to imitate your charity towards my

fellowmen in word and deed. Consoler of the suffering, help

me to bear my daily cross patiently and with perfect resigna-

tion to the will of God. Loving Shepherd of the flock of Christ,

obtain for me the grace of being a true child of Holy Mother

Church. Saint Pius, Beloved Holy Father, I humbly implore

your powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart

of Jesus all the graces necessary for my spiritual and temporal

welfare. I recommend to you in particular this favour…

( Mention your request).

Great Pontiff, whom Holy Mother Church has raised to the

honour of our altars and urged me to invoke and imitate as a

Saint, I have great confidence in your prayers. I earnestly trust

your intercession for me at the throne of God. Saint Pius, pray

for me and for those I love. I beg of you, by your love of Jesus

and Mary, do not abandon us in our needs. May we experience

the peace and joy of your holy death. Amen. In thanksgiving to God for the graces bestowed on Saint Pius. Our Fa-

ther. Hail Mary. Glory be (3 times)

How to Converse continually and familiarly with God

Chapter 2: Why have you loved Me?

Consider that no one-whether friend or brother, father or

mother, lover or spouse-loves you more than your God. And

divine grace is the inestimable treasure through which vile

creatures and servants like ourselves become dear friends of

our Creator. “For she is an infinite treasure to men! Which

they that use, become the friends of God.” (Wis. 7:14) It was

for the purpose of increasing our confidence that He

“emptied Himself” (Phil. 2:7), so to speak, humbling Himself

to the point of becoming a man in order to live in familiar

converse with us. “He conversed with men.” (Bar. 3:38). He

went so far as to become a little Babe and to live in poverty

for our sake. He even placed Himself under the species of

bread so as to be with us always and in the most intimate un-

ion. “He that eateth My Flesh, and drinketh My Blood, abideth

in Me, and I in him.” (John 6:57)

In short, so great is God’s love for you that He seems to love

no one but you. And therefore, you should love no one but

Him. [That is, we should love only God with an absolute love

which supersedes every other consideration.] You should be

able to say to Him: My Beloved to me, and I to Him.” (Cant.

2:16). My God has given Himself entirely to me, and I give

my whole self to Him; He has chosen me for His beloved,

and I choose Him from among all for my only love. “My Be-

loved is white and ruddy, chosen out of thousands.” (Cant.

5:10)

Often, therefore speak to God in these words: “O my Lord,

why have You loved me so much? What good do ou find in

my poor self? Have you forgotten the injuries I have done

you? But since You have treated me with so much love-for

instead of having condemned me to Hell, You have given me

graces without number-I will henceforth love no one but

You, my God and my all. What grieves me most in my past

Offenses. O my loving God, is not so much the punishment I

have deserved, as the displeasure I have given You, Who are

worthy of infinite love. But you never reject a repentant and

humble heart . “A contrite and humbled heart, O God, Thou

wilt t despise.” (Ps. 50:19). Now indeed I wish forno one else

but You alone in this life and in the next. “For what have I in

Heaven? And besides Thee what do I desire upon

earth?...Thou art the God of my heart, and the God that is my

portion forever.” (Ps. 72:25-26). You alone are and will al-

ways be the only Lord of my heart and will; You alone my

only good, my heaven, my hope, my all. “Thou art the God of

my heart, and the God that is my portion forever.” (Ps. 72:26).

NEWSLETTER FOR THE ARCHCONFRATERNITY OF ST STEPHEN

Servers’ Corner Relics

“Now!”

The relics of the saints may be exposed in any

church or oratory. Generally they are placed on

either side of the altar cross or between the altar

candles. They are placed here where an office is

to be celebrated but it is unbecoming to leave

them there all the time. They can also be ex-

posed near to the altar or placed upon a side al-

tar as long as the Blessed Sacrament is not re-

served there. They are not to be placed on of just

in front of the tabernacle.

When the Blessed Sacrament is exposed any

relics on the altar or in the sanctuary should not

be exposed.

The priest who exposes the relics is to wear a stole. It should be red for those of a

martyr, or of a martyr along with other saints, or white for non-martyrs. Two torch-

bearers accompany the relic when carried to the place of exposition.

In front of any publicly exposed relics at least two candles must be lit; a votive

lamp does not suffice. For relics exposed between the altar candles, it suffices that

the candles required by the office be lit. The reverence shown to a saint’s relic thus

exposed is a simple bow.

The priest may incense the relics at the beginning of their exposition and prior to

their reposition. He blesses the incense as per usual, and incenses them with two

double swings of the thurible, bowing before and after. However, when the relics

are exposed between the altar candles, they are incensed after the altar cross but

without bowing to them.

It is permitted for the priest to present the relics for the veneration of the faithful at

the communion rail. The priest holds the reliquary in his right hand and this is

kissed (BUT NOT LICKED!) by the faithful starting at the epistle side. The priest

wipes the reliquary with a purificator in his left hand from time to time.

It is permitted to give a blessing with the relic. Wearing his stole and also a cope if

desired, the priest holds the reliquary in two hands and in silence traces the sign of

the cross over the faithful.
