Celebrate Yourself!Celebrating cultural diversity is a great way to explore what makes each one of us and our families unique. The acceptance of cultural diversity also aids child development by supporting a child’s sense of belonging.

What better way to celebrate cultural diversity than celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month (9/15/15 – 10/15/15)! Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1988 (Lyndon B. Johnson) as Hispanic Heritage Week. It was expanded in 1988 (Ronald Regan) to cover a 30 day period. And finally, was enacted into law August 17th, 1998. This 30 day period is a time to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The thought of celebrating Hispanic Heritage may bring to mind the celebration of Cinco de Mayo, which is often thought to be Mexico’s Independence Day. However, May 5th is the celebration of Mexico’s unexpected victory over France in 1862. Mexico’s true day of independence is celebrated on September 16th. This was the end of the battle with Spain for independence that lasted from 1810-1821! This day is celebrated with food, music, dancing, parades, displaying the Mexican flag and spending time with family. There are several ways to incorporate this celebration into a child care setting:

• Research famous Hispanics who have contributed to our world (Ellen Ochoa 5/10/58, researcher, engineer, and classical flutist who in 1991 became the world’s first Hispanic female Astronaut)

• Share books of Hispanic heritage (Pat Mora 1/19/42, Mexican-American Latina writer of poetry, non-fiction and children’s books, “Book Fiesta” shows children and families from varied cultures and languages enjoying reading)

• Invite family members of different cultures to share stories and traditions of their own

• Listen to music and practice dance styles from different cultures

• Let children participate in preparing food from different cultures

These small activities can open up a whole new world to the children in child care programs and the teachers providing them. Who knows, it could also spark an interest in routinely exploring all cultures of the world. Have fun exploring!

Easy Recipe for Tostadas (amounts depend on group size)

Canned pinto beans Shredded cheddar cheese Shredded lettuce Diced tomatoes Premade corn/flour tostada shells

Boil beans and allow to cool, let children take turns mashing beans, allow children to tear lettuce into shreds, let them scoop and spread beans over shells, allow them to sprinkle cheese, lettuce and tomato, enjoy!

*older children can shred blocks of cheese and dice tomatoes, premade shells can be purchase at a local grocery store or possibly a favorite restaurant

Easy Recipe for Salsa (amounts depend on group size)

Canned whole peeled tomatoes Dried red pepper flakes Garlic salt Onion powder

Give each child a bowl with one tomato and some juice, allow them to squeeze the tomatoes until they become chunky consistency, sprinkle small amount of dried red pepper flakes, garlic salt and onion powder to taste, enjoy! For a more authentic experience allow children to mash tomatoes in a molcajete (stone bowl & pestle)

*close adult supervision may be required depending on age of group, especially with red pepper flakes

Introduction to Strengthening Families This course will provide an introduction to the Strengthening Families approach which centers on shifting the focus from risks and deficits to strengths and resiliency. The course will also provide an awareness of the Protective Factors framework and how it promotes optimal child development by utilizing strategies to build upon parent strengths.

Child Abuse, Neglect and Abusive Head Trauma Become familiar with the different types of child abuse and neglect and what it means to be a mandated reporter. Participants will get tips on how to prevent child abuse and neglect including shaken baby syndrome.

The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool: Block Play Blocks appeal to young children because they feel good to the touch, are symmetrical, and invite open-ended explorations. When children construct, create, and represent their experiences with blocks, they grow in all areas of development.

Building Social Emotional Foundations Rock Solid Foundations is a blended curriculum of the Infant/Toddler/Preschool modules from the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) curriculum; based upon the Pyramid Project model; and using the foundational framework and strategies from CSEFEL.

Class Descriptions


Seeds of Growth: The Business Plan Growing a business takes planning and intentional actions, child care is no different. Participants will explore business growth and sustainability through the creation of a business plan.

Get Outside, Learn Outside: Environmental Education for Early Childhood Participants will get a hands-on, minds-on introduction to environmental education, outdoor exploration, and nature play for early childhood. Learn how to use the Growing Up WILD and Project Learning Tree Early Childhood Environmental Experiences Activity and Curriculum Guides to engage children ages 3 to 7 in outdoor exploration and play. Participants will gain hands on experience with a sampling of activities which integrate investigations of nature with art, literature, math, music, and movement. In addition, participants will strengthen their awareness and understanding of the environment and natural resources while learning developmentally appropriate methods to safely and effectively engage young children in outdoor exploration and nature play.

Responsive Environments and Routines Participants will learn how responsive environments and routines can be used to provide support for young children’s appropriate behavior. This information will come from the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) curriculum for Infant/Toddler/Preschool.

The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers and Twos: Exploring Sand and Water Teachers plan meaningful experiences by selecting materials that match children’s growing abilities and interests, by observing what children do, and by reflecting on those observations. Knowing how to engage children in a variety of experiences enables teachers to provide them with a rich array of potential learning opportunities. It is important to remember that teachers are only planning for possibilities because they must respond to momentary changes in children’s strengths, needs, and interest as well as to their general abilities. Participants learn strategies to support children’s development and learning by caring and teaching during play experiences. Participants consider ways to create an environment for each type of experience and explore ideas for sharing their knowledge about the experiences with families.

Social Connections, Meeting Concrete Needs in Strengthening FamiliesThis course will provide an introduction to the Strengthening Families approach which centers on shifting the focus from risks and deficits to strengths and resiliency thereby building the Protective Factors. Social connections and support systems for families are very important in building the Protective Factors. One must first understand ways to help families establish social connections and access concrete support in times of need. Building an awareness on how social connections and concrete support promotes optimal child development and build family strengths.

The Creative Curriculum® for Infants, Toddlers, and Twos: Connecting with Music and Movement Teachers plan meaningful experiences by selecting materials that match children’s growing abilities and interests, by observing what children do, and by reflecting on those observations. Music and movement can be a joyful experience for young children, beginning at birth. When you rock babies to a gentle lullaby, sing a favorite song over and over, or dance around the room with children you share special moments. This training will give providers ideas to engage infants and toddlers in meaningful music and movement activities.

Building Positive Relationships Participants will learn how to build relationships using the curriculum from the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) for Infant/Toddler/Preschool.

Enhancing Emotional Literacy Participants will learn how to enhance emotional literacy using the curriculum from the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) for Infant/Toddler/Preschool.

Practical Strategies to Build Resiliency in Children This course will provide an introduction to the Strengthening Families approach which centers on shifting the focus from risks and deficits to strengths and resiliency. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a critical component in building resiliency in children. SEL begins with looking at feelings and how they are important. Exploring the Happiness Equation, learning strategies to increase flexible thinking and understanding optimism and pessimism will assist with understanding and promoting SEL.

Directors Toolbox: From the Inside Out, The Power of Reflection and Self-Awareness Having a better understanding of yourself is the first step toward achieving a better relationship with others. This workshop is an invitation to self-reflection and discovery. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the gap between their current and ideal work environment and become a self-mentor for envisioning new possibilities.

Social-Emotional Development of Infants, Toddlers, and Their Parents Social-emotional development begins at birth and continues throughout life. The foundation for healthy social-emotional development laid in the first three years helps a child establish meaningful relationships with parents, caregivers, and peers and supports his or her learning, both in and outside of school. When children experience difficulty in acquiring social-emotional skills, they are at increased risk emotionally, developmentally, and academically.

Cupcakes, cookies and sugary foods are a staple for events such as birthday/holiday parties in child care. However, we know how important it is for children to make healthy choices. Snack time and celebrations are a perfect time to introduce healthy foods in a fun way!

Try these ideas at your next celebration:• Friendship Fruit Salad - Have each family member bring

a different fruit and make a fruit salad to share! (You can also make fruit kabobs!)

• Fruit Cups (Find the recipe at www.skinnytaste.com/2011/06/frozen-fruit-pops.html)

• Banana Pops - Slice bananas in half and slide in a popsicle stick. Roll in yogurt and whole grain cereal topping and freeze.

• Fruit Smoothies - blend fruit with ice and low-fat milk• Whole-grain crackers with cheese cubes, string cheese

or hummus• Cereal mix (whole-grain, low sugar cereals mixed with

dried fruit, pretzels, etc.)• Celery with peanut butter and raisins*• Try serving raw vegetables with fun and healthy dips

such as hummus, salsa, bean dip, low fat ranch or low fat yogurt

• Make sure to offer water, low-fat or fat-free milk or 100% juice to drink

*Please consider ages when choosing foods. Some items may be choking hazards. Also, watch for food allergies and offer foods that all the children can enjoy.

Also, consider non-food celebrations! Non-food focus activities provide opportunities for singing, dancing, playing games and more! Here are some ideas to try as an alternative to food!• Games• Crafts• Dance Party• Have family members come and read a book to the
