PASTOR’S PEN

The Voice Sept/Oct 2012-3

Greetings Disciples,

Fall is my favorite time of year.

It’s a time of change and transition, as what was be-gins to morph into what will be. Of course, wehave to deal with the deadness of winter until that change is finalized. And winters here in Chicago arenothing to scoff at!

Here at LMC we’re going through such morphing as well. Our Youth and Confirmation programs havemorphed into a strong, dedicated group of young people who regularly attend services, regularly meettogether to snack and worship, and who regularly ask for more and more activities to practice theirfaith. Brian has done an amazing job, and we had almost all of our youth involved in some sort ofsummer camping (which we plan to continue). We’ve now changed the schedule so that they’ll meetregularly Monday nights for worship, Catechism or Bible study, and games. You’re welcome to join inthe worship if you’d like! 7pm on Monday nights in the chapel.

We’ve also added a worship service. At the beginning of the sermon series, “Jesus: Bread of Life,” Iinvited you to tell me and the council what feeds you at LMC. Most everyone mentioned in some waythat LMC is a retreat, an escape from the noise of the city, into a time of prayer and contemplation.

Due to these responses, we’ve added a Wednesday night worship service at 7:00 in the chapel, whichwill last about a half hour. Our hope is to be a community rooted in worship. If you cannot makeSunday mornings, we hope you’ll make Wednesday evenings! The service will be quiet, contemplative, and peaceful.

We’ve also added some new Small Groups for the fall! A group of parents will be meeting Mondaynights in October, opposite of Youth/Confirmation, to discuss parenting with adolescents. Misti Pepplerand Deanna Martinez will be heading up this group. In addition, Brian Myers and I will be headingup a book study on “Velvet Elvis” by Rob Bell meeting every other week from 12:30-2. These, plusour parents of young children group that meets on Tuesday mornings, plus Happier Hour that meetsmonthly provide plenty of opportunities for you to be involved in something at LMC!

Finally, we welcome our new Youth and Family Director to the staff here! As our congregation hasgrown, we’ve seen the need for a person to coordinate youth and family ministries for our youngfamilies and school-age children. They have a number of new initiatives for you to keep the look outfor!

September 9th is Rally Day. 10am. It all begins there as God takes us into a new year here at LMC.

See you then, bring your Bibles.

Peace,Pt…

YOUTH NEWS Brian MyersYouth Director

[email protected] Hello Church, This fall our Youth Ministries will be going through quite an overhaul. The first notable change will be our meeting dates. Our past system had Youth Group meetings and Confirmation class ( junior high only) held on alternating Mondays, whereas now everyone will be meeting together 3 out of 4 Mondays a month. Our time together will start with a joint wor-ship service of both junior and senior high. From there we’ll alternate between an “All Youth Group” night and a “Confirmation/Bible study” night. It’s a move that both Pastor Tim and I are very excited about.

Our beginning services are open to you as well. If you are unable to attend on Sunday, feel free to join us on Monday evening; we’d love to have you!

The next big project we’ll be undergoing this fall is the renovation of the Youth Room. If you haven’t visited the Youth Room (3rd floor, south-western corner of the building) recently, it’s in dire need of a face-lift. We’ll be adding things like lamps and area rugs, and painting the walls with our Youth Group logo (designed by Giles Travis) and chalk-board paint. When I polled the Youth they told me that they wanted the room to be a sacred place, a place that was inviting and a place where shoes aren’t allowed. I’ll keep you posted on its progress.

Youth Group is held on Monday evenings from 7-8:30pm.

There are several ways to be involved in ministry at LMC, and the mu-sic "umbrella" is, of course, what some of us fit nicely under! Do you? I am always excited to hear from people who want to be in-volved! One problem I have is that I have a terrible memory, so, PLEASE, email me or allow me to write down your name and in-formation if you are interested in participating in some way!

How can you be involved?Special Music: Both services benefit from music that high-lights certain parts of the service, certain aspects of the liturgical season, etc. We are look-ing for vocalists and instrumentalists, solos and groups. I encourage you to generate your own ideas for Special Music, or to just volunteer your time and talents and we'll work to-gether from there. You don't have to be perfect, you just have to step out and try!

Chancel Choir: This is a really fun way to be a part of the music ministry on an ongoing basis, for a sea-son, or even for occasional services "now and then" as you are able. This is a group made up of varying levels of expertise, and I wouldn't have it any other way! The point is, we need you, and you will fit in. We worship together, we share stories and laughter, and we learn some interesting music that contrib-utes to worship! It's a pretty good deal. The bottom line is that we would really like this group to grow from within our congregation, so if you have ever thought about just trying the choir, now is a great time. We are in transition, so this is a time to sample the ministry to see if it fits into your worship.

Handbell Choir: While this group is temporarily on hiatus, it isn't gone forever! Handbells are awesome for people who want to be involved in music, don't read music very well, don't like to sing, or can't carry a tune comfortably. All one needs is the ability to count! This is great for young and old, experienced and inexperienced, and the music that results is gor-geous. Please consider whether Handbell Choir might be a good ministry for you!

So, you're not musical? Music ministry isn't your thing? Then I'd like to make a little push for the Meal Train ministry! This is a ministry we use as a church family to reach out to our members and friends in time of need with a little love in the form of food. It's fantastic because you can meet people you wouldn't otherwise meet, and with all of the resources for great recipes on the internet, there's no reason you can't whip up a simple, tasty meal that will really bless someone who needs it!

If any of these things interest you even a little, please email me. I am hoping that we can re-ally build up our forces during this transition time so that we can continue stronger! I re-ally hope to have a full inbox soon after the publication of this issue of The Voice!

VELVET ELViS BOOK STUDYThis fall we’ll be dissecting controversial author and pastor, Rob Bell’s book, Velvet Elvis. Here’s a snippet…

“...What if, when he was done with his masterpiece, R. had announced that there was no more need for anyone to paint, because had just painted the ultimate painting? What if R. had held a press conference, unveiling his painting, and then called on all paint-ers everywhere to put down their brushes, insisting that since he had painted the ulti-mate painting, there was simply no need for any of them to continue their work?

We would say that R. had lost his mind. We would say this because we instinctive-ly understand that art has to, in some way, keep going. Keep exploring, keep ar-ranging, keep shaping and forming and bringing in new perspectives.

For thousands for years the followers of Jesus, like artists, have understood that we have to keep going, exploring what it means to live in harmony with God and each other. The Christian faith tradition is filled with change and growth and transformation. Jesus took part in this process by calling people to rethink faith and the Bible and hope and love and everything else, and by in-viting them into the endless process of working out how to live as God created us to live.”

This fall, we’ll be challenging ourselves and each other to “keep going, exploring what it means to live in harmony with God and each other”. Come for the discussion, come for the contro-versy, come to more deeply explore the mysteries of faith that we hold. Dates for the book study have yet to be announced, look for announcements coming in the bulletin this fall.

Come join the LMC Choir! Here are the fall dates for rehearsal and performance times

A HISTORY OF THE ORGAN PROJECTThe Organ TrekLarry GehrkeAt the end of September 2010, Laura Barkenquast approached me after choir rehearsal on the pos-sibility of my leading an effort to get a new organ for Luther Memorial, but the journey did not start there. When I began coming to Luther Memorial at the end of 1986, I had heard of previous fund-rais-ing efforts towards the goal of a new organ as it was recognized that the old organ was losing func-tionality bit-by-bit. These efforts were being led by our long-time organist, Barbara Bleck. In 1998, Barbara began requesting information from organ companies and, near the end of 1999, she organized a committee to evaluate possible organ replacements, including purchasing a used organ or buying a new or-gan. I was honored to be a part of that committee, as were some of the others involved in our current venture. We were given instruction as to how organs worked, visited a potential used organ for sale, interviewed new organ vendors and received their evaluations, and were making plans to visit an organ maker, when unforeseen events caused the effort to be abandoned in 2000 (not the least of which was the sudden and untimely death of our organ repairer and primary contact to the organ makers). However, one key element that all of our organ experts mentioned was that, first, Luther Memorial’s electrical system needed to be upgraded and replaced. In the meantime, the organ fund continued to grow.Back to 2010, Pastor Tim had obtained the advice of Daniel Schwandt, Cantor of the Lutheran School of The-ology-Chicago. Daniel provided an evaluation of the current condition, and four possible options for replace-ment in August 2010. At the end of October, I met with Laura and Pastor Tim to discuss the task at hand. The first task was to recruit the committee members. One by one our members were recruit-ed. The last recruits were named by December; unfortunately, the Christmas season was now upon us, and getting a meeting together would prove to be impossible at this time. That did not, how-ever, deter us from investigating alternatives. The possibility of buying St. John’s of Lincoln-wood’s organ was investigated by Dieter Schulte, but that turned out not to be an option. Finally, in January 2011, we were able to come together for our first meeting. In attendance were Dieter, Scott Lorraine, Tim Klein, Bette Vidina, Sean Benham, and myself. One of the issues that first came up was the fact that our electrical system needed to be overhauled. Scott assured us that should be covered as this would be done in 2011. After presentation of the current status of our organ, all agreed that the repair of the current organ was not a long-term viable option. That left us two alternatives, purchase a used organ or have a new organ built. The organ fund was already or nearly sufficient to buy a used organ outright, but would that be the best option? Each of was to investigate options on our own and another meeting would be scheduled to discuss the alternatives. At the beginning of February, Pastor Tim suggested that I contact David Brackley, who works for an organ in-staller. No other options having panned out as of yet, we decided to have David Brackley and Steve Smith, Triune Music, Inc., do an evaluation and present to our committee in a meeting near the end of March.News came in of the potential sale of the organ at Nebo Lutheran Church, which had been closed, by its purchaser, Liberty Christian Center. Dieter went to the Nebo Lutheran facility and investigat-ed the possibility, but the organ there was small, in poor shape, and further damaged subsequent to the church closure. Parts of it could be salvaged, but that would be the best possible from Nebo.At the end of March, the group of us, including Laura Barkenquast and Dorothy Witschonke, met to hear the presentation from Triune Music. They provided their evaluation of our current organ, which was not re-ally news to us, but then provided their proposal. Their proposal was for a hybrid (pipe and digital) organ to replace our current organ that could be phased in and, hence, paid for over time. The reason this could oc-cur was that the organ console would have a digital component, enabling it to mimic a true pipe organ with-out having all of the pipes rebuilt and in place for it to be used. As organ installers, we also informed Triune Music of the Nebo organ, as they could rescue the salvageable pieces of that organ for future ventures.

8-The Voice Sept/Oct 2012

Subsequent to the presentation, we discussed the possibilities and, although not firm on Triune’s proposal, found it extremely appealing for our situation and agreed to fur-ther pursue it. It was also at this time that we set a goal of making a recommenda-tion and having an initial organ installation in place by Reformation Sunday 2011.The next step would be to have Triune Music give a demonstration of a couple of their or-gan installations. At the beginning of May, Dieter, Tim, Bette, Dorothy, and myself were giv-en tours and demonstrations of the organs at Saint Edmund Episcopal Church in Woodlawn and Holy Trinity Lutheran in Lakeview. Saint Edmund’s had exposed pipes, and we were impressed by the appearance. Later in May, Triune Music provided us with a list of references. At the beginning of June, we met again and divided up the 13 references. Although we were not successful in reaching many of the references, the references we were able to reach provided us with good, and mostly positive, feedback. We met again later in June and reviewed the results, this time including our new organ-ist, Lyle Harlow. Lyle contacted Buzzard Organ Company for an additional evaluation and rough proposal. We met again at the beginning of July. Presuming Triune Music would be our selection, a draft of a pro-posal to our church council was prepared. I also had requested that Triune Music submit a formal proposal with their options. At the meeting, Lyle advised that the news from Buzzard Organ’s evaluation prompted him to conclude that the Triune Music proposal would be the preferred option for Luther Memorial. In mid-July, Triune Music submitted their formal proposal with four options. Lyle also met with David Brack-ley, visiting and evaluating the organs Holy Trinity and Saint Michael’s in Wheaton, and he was sufficiently impressed with their work. We met once again at the end of July to review the Triune Music options pre-sented: Option I—Two-Manual Tab Console with 20 Ranks of Pipes, Option II—Two-Manual Drawknob Con-sole with 24 Ranks of Pipes, Option III-Three- and Four-Manual Console Options with 30 Ranks of Pipes. I prepared a comparison of the costs of each of the options with the costs of other options from other organ companies and Daniel Schwandt’s estimates. We also brought Bob Jones into our group for his advice on physical changes to the sanctuary to support the new organ. We quickly ruled out the first Triune Music op-tion as being inadequate for the size of our sanctuary. Option II was under strong consideration, but it would not provide us with nearly the range of sound that we had with our current organ, which was a four-manual console. This left us with the three- or four-manual console option with 30 ranks of pipes. We decided we needed more information from Triune Music to make a decision, including information on speaker place-ment, and we wanted to share with them our desires for exposed pipes and continuing the placement of the organ console in the front of the church (versus the balcony), but with a movable feature for the console. In mid-August, we met again, this time in the sanctuary, with David and Steve from Triune Music. We discussed the differences between the three- and four-manual console and extensively reviewed our physical desires for organ placement. We worked out how we could get some of the pipes physi-cally displayed and were advised that the organ could not be made movable, but we could build a platform for the organ to make it movable. Subsequently, Triune provided us the specifications for the platform. We settled upon Option III and the three-manual console with 30 ranks of pipes.

We were now ready to bring the proposal to the church council, but they were not hav-ing another meeting until mid-September, which would mean we would miss our ex-pectation to have a new organ console installed by Reformation Sunday.Tim, Dieter, Lyle, and myself presented our recommendations to the council at the mid-September council meeting. The council did not vote at that meeting, but decided to consider the recommen-dations at the October meeting. At the October meeting, it was decided to put the recommenda-tion up for a vote at the January 2012 annual congregational meeting. Our group presented our recommendation and it unanimously passed, including the authorization to negotiate the con-tract and begin as soon as possible with the first phase, building and installation of the console, paid for by the current organ fund and, as necessary, supplemented by other available funds. Our new organ console is now installed and available for everyone to see and hear; how-ever, we’re not there yet. We still have to reinstall the salvageable pipes we removed from the chambers this Spring, have new pipes installed, and Triune Music needs to build the chests that enable the pipes to make the beautiful music that they do. We do not have the money currently set aside for these later phas-es, so please join us in concluding our Organ Trek.

Peace Vigil NEW TIME Effective September 15 the service will start at 7:00 PM

Thanks to all who participated on July 26 when the Palestinian teenagers shared their stories of daily living under occupation. We changed our format for the eve-ning in order to allow for more interaction. Luther Memorial will continue to hold

a prayer vigil for peace in the Middle East on the 15th of every month.

We offer this prayer vigil as an opportunity to incorporate the welfare of the people of the Middle East into the heart of our church life: in our worship, in our learning, in our giving, and in our ad-

vocacy We urge people to see this prayer vigil as so much more than just words in a formal liturgy, but rather as an outpouring of concern for Palestinians and Israelis – Christians, Muslims, and Jews – whose lives are overtaken by broken relationships and the conflict which flows from these divisions.

Some people are surprised when we say that these prayer vigils will continue until the violence ends and we can celebrate a just and lasting negotiated resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Perhaps like apartheid in South Africa , the conflict in the Middle East is so compli-

cated and the anger runs so deep that it is difficult for many of us to pray with confidence for justice and an enduring solution. But engaging in this vigil, we are participating in a count-

down, not to Armageddon, but to reconciliation. We are declaring that God’s grace is the source of all peace and through prayer we are humbling our selves to God’s will for all creation.

Night Ministry as experienced by Diane Schulte“You must be serving a very large group.” Is how the middle aged woman started a conversation with me as I was turning the corner from one cooler aisle into the next. I was making my monthly shopping run to Costco to pickup packages of sliced ham and turkey and American cheese. Boxes of chips, apple sauce, pickles and condiments. I said “ Yes, I’m doing the shopping for our church. Once a month we prepare and distribute sandwiches, cookies and water for about 200 homeless people in conjunction with the Night Ministry, a nondenominational service organization that has been on Chicago’s streets at night for 40 years.”

“You are serving a large group. God bless you in your service.” We started heading down separate aisles to finish shopping. I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Excuse me, can I make a contribution to help with the cost of the food.” It was my new “friend”, she handed me a $10 bill. I thanked her for her kindness.

I was so elated that someone I just talked to in the store about Luther Memorial’s part-nership with the Night Ministry should feel moved to support our ministry. As I was get-ting into line to check out, the woman in front of me commented about the large quan-tities in my shopping cart. I told her about our church and the Night Ministry.

The cashier was scanning the items from my basket when the woman who had checked out before me came towards me. “I am a 911 operator and have found that the staff at the Night Ministry can al-ways be counted on to provide help.” She handed me a $20 bill. Twenty dollars is enough to buy the bread for making 200 sandwiches. I was overwhelmed. God provides. God is gracious, all the time.

Pastor Tim, tell us again the story of the Lord providing manna in the wilde-ness, the feeding of the five thousand, the invitation to the feast.

Faith & JusticeFall is always a time to begin new programs and renew already es-tablished programs with enthusiasm. In conversation with mem-

bers of Luther Memorial it seems as if the time is right for us to step forward with a new ministry of ‘Faith & Justice’. The mem-

bers of Luther Memorial have proven themselves to be very generous with giving of their time and money for the many causes that have been brought forward in the recent past.

Faith is our belief in God. One definition of justice is ‘fairness or rea-sonableness, especially in the way people are treated or decisions

are made’. Our faith often calls us to do justice for those who do not have a voice. Charity is the voluntary provision of money, materi-

als, or help to people in need. Most of us are familiar with charity and try to answer the call for donations when it is brought to our atten-

tion. Charity is necessary for the work of justice, but justice requires us to show up and speak up when our faith moves us to do so.

Our vision for the Faith & Justice group is that the core members would channel information to the rest of the congregation regarding oppor-

tunities to do justice. We would pick three or four projects each year to encourage member’s participation. This could be something like Cross

Walk where we would march with other people in solidarity against vio-lence on the streets of Chicago, or participating in a day of lobbying in

Springfield for prisoner rights or another cause we feel called to support.Even if you are not a core member of this group, you would be wel-come to bring information to us for consideration of congregational

support. I’m sure our mission will become clearer as we begin to meet and establish some guidelines. Stay tuned for more information.

Book club will be resuming from our summer hiatus meeting September 27th at 7:30pm in the church lounge. We will be

discussing Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. All are welcome.

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and dis-appeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling

himself aboard. So began one of the most ex-traordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

We will continue to meet the last Thursday of each month. Please contact Sara Byerly with any questions: [email protected]

14-The Voice Sept/Oct 012

WELCA NEWSI hope that everyone had a great summer with some quiet time and time spent with your fam-ily. It always seems to go by so quickly. With the end of summer, however, we are antici-pating a great year of activities. Some will be new and some are tried and true.

We will begin our fall activities with an informational Fall Gathering at Luther Memorial on Saturday, September 8th from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm. This is a chance for you to meet other women from LMC and also to hear first-hand about our four groups that will continue their monthly meetings beginning in September. You will also have a chance to ask any questions you may have. We will be serving a con-tinental breakfast and will arrange to have child care available. We hope you will be able to join us.

The members of our coordinating council are as follows: Linda Miranda – President and leader of the Women’s Spirituality Group, Dixie Downes – Secretary and leader of the Service Group, Ellen Kelley – Treasurer, Diane Schulte and Lara Prestipino – co-leaders of the Knitting & Quilting Group, and Jenny Araujo – leader of the Bible Study Group. In addition to Diane’s role in the K & Q group, she also repre-sents Mary Circle. Ellen Kelley is taking over as treasurer from Frieda Thoroe who is one of our found-ing members and has served as our treasurer for many years. We are extremely grateful to Frieda for her many years of service and hope she will enjoy many more years of just being a member of Mary Circle.

On October 27th the Metropolitan Chicago Synod Women of the ELCA will hold their annual assembly at Trin-ity Lutheran Church in Oak Lawn. This is always a meaningful day of worship and learning. It begins at 9:30 am and will end at 3:00 pm. We begin the morning with coffee/and while we register and collect the necessary materials for the day. There will also be lunch. Each group from the synod sends one delegate who partici-pates as a voting member during the business meeting. Those who are not delegates may attend the meet-ing as an observer or use this time to browse the display tables from various organizations and vendors. The theme for the day is “Bold Women Gathered by God”. The key speakers for the day will be Rev. Julie Rowe from ELCA Global Missions on Israel-Palestine, and Kristin Holm from Community Renewal Society. If you attended our retreat last year you will remember Kristin and her challenge to us regarding justice. The registration fee is $30. In-kind gifts to benefit the PADS program for the homeless, located at Trinity Lutheran will be collected (i.e. white sox, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, razors for men, and feminine products for women).

Yours in Christ,Linda Miranda
