Welcome to SequoyahState Park

Sequoyah State Park is a great place to observe birds throughout the year. This state park is a peninsula that is bounded by Fort Gibson Reservoir. Sequoyah State Park’s woodlands and meadows, along with its proximity to the lake, provide food and safety for many species of birds. During warm seasons, bluebirds and other year-round birds, as well as neotropical species like the scissortailed flycatcher, build nests and raise their young in this state park.

Bird species like the dark-eyed junco avoid Oklahoma’s hot summers as they raise their young in places that have a cooler summer climate. These “winter birds” return each fall and many species remain here until early spring.

Sequoyah State Park and the Fort Gibson Reservoir region are also important to migrating birds by providing these species with food and a place to rest during their long-distance travels.

We hope that this bird guide helps you to identify those birds you observe during your visit to Sequoyah State Park. A bird field guide, a pair of binoculars, and a sketch pad and pencil are also good things to have on your bird walk.
