SER AND ESTAR

The verb SER means “to be”.

It is an irregular verb, which means it’s conjugations should be memorized.

It is used to describe the following:

SER

Date - (Hoy es jueves.)

Origin - (Yo soy de Francia)

Characteristic – (Él es alto)

Time – (Es la una de la mañana.)

Occupation – (Yo soy mecánico.)

Relationship – (Ella es mi amiga.)

USES OF SER – (DOCTOR ACRONYM)

Yo soy = I am

Tú eres = you are

Él/ella =He/she isUsted es = You

are

Nosotros somos = we are

Ellos/ellas = TheyUstedes son = you all

are

CONJUGATIONS OF THE VERB SER

Although the verbs SER and ESTAR both mean “to be”, they are NOT interchangeable.

This means that you must learn the specific rules for the use of each verb.

SER VS ESTAR

The verb estar also means “to be”.

It is used to indicate LOCATION. (Yo estoy en la clase.)

It is also used to describe EMOTIONS (Ella está triste) and TEMPORARY/CHANGEABLE CONDITIONS(mi mamá está enferma/La comida está caliente).

To remember uses of estar, the acronym “PLACE” is sometimes used.

ESTAR

Position – La casa está cerca de la escuela.

Location – Yo estoy en la clase de español.

Action – Ella está haciendo la tarea.

Condition – Mi mamá está enferma/La comida está fría.

Emotion – Los chicos están tristes.

USES OF ESTAR – (PLACE ACRONYM)
