Title: Clemson University. University Relations. Records.

Abstract: This series contains the documents and recordings produced by

University Relations. The recordings are divided into two categories:

sound and video. The recordings consist of interviews with

administrators, professors, students, Clemson citizens, Clemson

Alumni Class of 1943; public service announcements, awards

presentations, Strom Thurmond Institute

Dates: 1965-1996 [inclusive]

Quantity: 22 cubic feet consisting mainly of folders, 41 photographs, 202 slides,

65 audio recordings, 138 video recordings

Scope and Content Note

The majority of the collection consists of documents, audio and video recordings, but

also includes photographs, and slides.

The bulk of the correspondence is that of William Harry Durham, Associate Vice

President for University Relations 1984 - 1993. Prior to that time Durham served as

Executive Director for University Relations from 1980 to 1984; Director, University

Communications Center, 1968-1980; Head, University Television Center, 1966-1968.

The bulk of material in the collection covers the period 1965-1996, with most of the

collection dating from 1980-1992. In 2012 several folders of material from the files of

the Director of Visitor Programs, John Allen, were acquired; of these folders, one

predates 1965.

The documents are arranged alphabetically by subject. The audio and video recordings

are arranged in two categories. In each category the recordings are arranged by format

and then in chronological order.

The documents in this series consist of correspondence, media information, memoranda,

minutes, public service announcements, radio promotions, and scripts.

Primary subjects include Board of Visitors, the University‘s Centennial celebration 1988-

1989; the Communications Center, Cooperative Extension Service, Institutional

Advancement, Employee and Student Orientation, Public relations, and the Strom

Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs.

The recordings consist primarily of interviews with the Clemson Alumni Class of 1943,

administrators, professors, students, Clemson citizens; public service announcements,

awards presentations, and events of the Strom Thurmond Institute. Harry Durham

conducted most of the interviews.

IV. Video Recordings

The video in this collection are in three formats: ¾ tape, Betacam, and VHS. As a

preservation measure, all tapes were played and not rewound. Researchers must rewind the

tapes before viewing and should not rewind. For tapes that have multiple copies on different

formats, Betacam had the best quality followed by VHS and then ¾ tapes.

The videos include news reports, oral interviews with Clemson alumni and staff,

inaugurations, public service announcements, Centennial activities, and departmental films.

Harry Durham is often the narrator and appears in several of the videos.
