SERIES: PRESSING TO A BLESSING

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HUNGER AND THIRST – Pastor Alton Trimble BIBLE STUDY & LIFE GROUPS: WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 2020

MATTHEW 5:6 “God blesses those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. For they will be filled!” (NIV) ROMANS 1:17 “The Good News tells us how God makes us right with Himself.” (NCV) 1 JOHN 2:29 “...all who practice righteousness are God's true children.” (Mes) WHY SHOULD I WANT TO BE RIGHT WITH GOD? TWO REASONS:

1. It is the only way that life makes sense! 2. It’s the only to heaven!

PROVERBS 12:28 “Righteousness is the road to life and path to immortality.” JEREMIAH 29:11 (NLT) For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

WHAT IS GOD’S PLAN TO MAKE ME RIGHT WITH HIMSELF? Romans 1:17 (NLT) This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.” The Good News: God’s plan to make me right with Himself!

1. I can’t make myself righteous.

ECCLESIATES 7:20 “There is not a righteous person on earth who always does what is right and never sins.”

ROMANS 3:20 “No one can ever be made right in God's sight by doing what his law commands, because the more we know God's law, the clearer it becomes that we can’t keep it.”

2. God sent Jesus to pay for my sins so I could be declared righteous.

ROMANS 3:23-25 “For all have sinned; all fall short of God's glorious standard. Yet now God in his gracious kindness declares us not guilty. He has done this through Christ Jesus,

who has freed us by taking away our sins. For God sent Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to satisfy God's anger against us. We are made right with God when we believe that Jesus shed his blood, sacrificing his life for us.” 2 CORINTHIANS 5:21 “God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.” TITUS 3:5 “God saves us, NOT because of righteous things we have done, but because of his mercy.”

3. All I do is accept by faith what God did for me.

ROMANS 3:22 “We are made right in God's sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done.” ROMANS 10:9-10 “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for you believe with your heart, resulting in righteousness, and you confess with your mouth, resulting in salvation.” JOHN 6:35 Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. (NIV) JOHN 7:37 “On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!” (NIV) JOHN 4:14-15 Jesus: “Anyone who drinks the water I give will never be thirsty again. Never! The water I give will be a perpetual spring within you, a gushing, eternal fountain of life.’ The woman said, "Please, sir, give me some of that water! Then I'll never be thirsty again!” (Mes/ NLT)

FIVE THINGS TO HELP YOUR APPETITE:

1. REMIND MYSELF HOW MUCH GOD LOVES ME.

EPHESIANS 3:18-19 “And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” (NLT)

2. STOP FILLING UP ON JUNK FOOD.

PROVERBS 15:14 “A wise person is hungry for truth, while the fool feeds on trash.” (NLT)

ISAIAH 55:1-2 “The Lord says, “All you who are thirsty, COME TO ME and drink! And to those of you who don’t have money to buy food, come and eat for free! Why do you spend your money on something that isn’t real food and doesn’t really satisfy you? Come to me and you’ll eat what is good; your soul will enjoy the stuff that really satisfies!”

3. MAKE KNOWING GOD MY #1 GOAL.

Psalm 23:1 (NKJV) The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.

PSALM 63:1 O God, I earnestly seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, (as I) travel through this parched and weary desert where there’s no water!” (NIV/Mes) MATTHEW 6:33 “The thing you should want most is God's kingdom and doing what God wants. Then all these other things you need will be given to you.” (NCV)

4. GET INTO GOD’S WORD EVERYDAY.

1 PETER 2:2 “You must crave the pure spiritual milk (of the Word) so that you can grow into the fullness of your salvation. Cry out for this nourishment like a baby cries for milk!” (NLT) 2 TIMOTHY 3:16 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”

5. APPETITE IS INFLUENCED BY ASSOCIATION: JOIN A LIFE GROUP FOR SUPPORT.

PROVERBS 2:20 “Join the company of good men and women, who will keep you on the path of the righteous.” (Mes/NLT)
