Words

† There have been millions of words written in an effort to define leadership

† I would suggest that the fundamentals of good leadership are universal…whatever you label them

† Leaders are different than managers; but managers & positional leaders lead as well…the issue is how they do it & what is important

† Leadership is a function of who we are and where we are

† As Catholics, we are called upon to build the Kingdom; to conduct our lives in truth and justice– The core of all great leaders is within

– They suck people forward with them

† The issue is what are our core values as Catholics & how do we apply them to a leadership model

“Regard your soldiers as your children and they will follow you into

the deepest valleys; look on them as your own beloved sons, and

they will stand by you even unto death.

If, however, you are indulgent, but unable to make your authority

felt…then your soldiers must be likened to spoiled children; they are

useless for any practical purpose.”

Concluding thoughts on Leadership

† Truly great leaders guide their actions by their core values. As Catholics:

– We need frequent guidance from the “Boss”; our Lord through the Holy Spirit

• Which we obtain from the establishment of a relationship with God called Prayer

– We need to understand that God put us where we are for a reason

• And exercise humility and patience in conducting our affairs based on TRUST

• We need to know ourselves, remain calm, not worry, based on the realization that we are not in charge, HE is

† Easy to verbalize, hard to execute…takes practice

— Which will be challenged based on personal circumstances-where they are

Page 20: Servant Leadership - Madison Knights of Columbusmadison-kc.org/blog/documents/KofC Servant... · Principles of Servant Leadership †Relationships First –Jesus is the epitome of

The *Servant+ Leader’s Path

† Will be often marked by times of trial– Many managers establish the truth rather than seek it

† Servant leaders are often misunderstood; this leadership style requires constant communication and coaching– Your definition of what’s important can flow against the organizational

standard

– It’s hard work; it’s easier to assign tasks and then blame

† It requires patience and humility:– You might see the solution and want to make a change but the time may not

be right-can cause frustration if your values aren’t right

– It requires courage sometimes to debate rather than argue; to follow rather than having it your way

† Eating your ego [Service] is a lot less glamorous than being perceived as the stud leader but God know who His warriors are…
