Servant Thoughts Recently I found on YouTube an audio clip of the old dial up tone that used to be what
everyone heard when they dialed into the internet and I played it for my daughter, because
it really was not a part of her life experience. Most of the world had moved beyond dial up
internet by 2005, when she was just 2 years old. She had never heard that squawking
back and forth sound that was the hallmark of making a connection with the world wide
web. For most of our young people, a delay of seconds in getting connected and being on
the internet seems like forever. Those older ones of us remember what it was like to wait
for a computer to boot up, let alone get connected to the internet. In today’s world, it
seems incredibly slow in comparison.
I share this story because in this day and age, we have little patience. Waiting is a diffi-
cult thing for us. Even while we wait, we have those little rectangular devices in our hands,
so our waiting is distracted. But Advent is really a season of waiting. It is a call to set aside
our distractions and wait patiently for the Lord. I’m not very good at that. Perhaps you
aren’t either?
I personally am going to try a little experiment beginning December 3rd until December
25th to help me focus on what is most meaningful in this Advent season. I’m going to set
aside 10 minutes each day to read a Scripture passage, and then silently pray, reflect and
just wait in the Lord’s presence. While I think you could pick any passage and change it up
each day, I’m going to simply read Psalm 37 each day and reflect on it. In this Psalm, Da-
vid repeatedly speaks of waiting on the Lord, so that is what I will do. If you want you can
join me, or choose some other way to prepare during this season of Advent. May the Lord
bless however we prepare for His coming!

Dear Christian Friends,
As I am writing this message three days before Thanksgiving, I am thinking about all of the
things that God has done in my life, not only in this past year but in all of my 75 years. One
of the greatest things that has happened to me has been the call that you issued to me to
serve the Lord as one of your pastors. What a blessing it has been to be able to serve in
this capacity. I thank God that He moved you, His congregation here in Lexington, to issue
this call.
I also wish to thank all of you for your support of this ministry and of me and my wife, Jackie.
We have enjoyed many blessings showered on us by our Christian friends. It really means a
lot when you express your support and encouragement face to face, in cards and letters and
especially all the other wonderful gifts that you have given us during pastor appreciation
month. Many thanks to all of you.
As we now approach the remembrance of the greatest blessing of all, the birth of Christ Je-
sus, I pray that all of you will daily remember what He has done for you. The gift of His Son
makes everything else seem trivial. We now have peace with God and the sure and certain
hope of eternal life with Him. Remember, keep Christ in Christmas.
O Come Let Us Adore Him,
