What is a SERVER?
• Server is a dedicated computer that is specially designated to respond to the user requests
• The function of a computer server is to store, retrieve and send or "serve" files and data to other computers on its network.

What is VIRTUALIZATION?
• The word VIRTUAL means ?
• In Computing, Virtualization is the creation
of a virtual version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device or network resources.
• Eg: Hard Drive Partitioning
3
![Page 4: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
SERVER VIRTUALIZATION
• Servers rarely run at full capacity. Server Virtualization enables multiple applications running on multiple operating systems to run on the same server, utilizing that unused additional capacity.
• Use of Software Application for
Virtualization

![Page 5: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
SERVER VIRTUALIZATION• Examples :
MS Virtual Server 2005, Standard (4p)
VMware ESX Server 2.5
• In the virtual server model, the virtualization software instead provides the illusion of more than one computer, hard drive, printer, etc.
• Higher level of security since individual
virtual servers are isolated from each other.5
![Page 6: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Why VIRTUALIZATION?
• Too many servers for too little work
• Aging hardware reaching end of usable life
• High infrastructure requirements
• Limited flexibility in shared environments
6
![Page 7: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Why VIRTUALIZATION?
Low utilization metrics in servers across the organization…
7
![Page 8: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Why VIRTUALIZATION?
• High costs and infrastructure needs
– Maintenance
– Networking
– Floor space
– Cooling
– Power
– Disaster Recovery

VIRTUALIZATION Brings
• Reduce the number of physical machines• Isolate environments but share hardware• Make better use of existing capacity• Virtualize Network and SAN interfaces to
reduce infrastructure needs• Ultimately save on maintenance.
More options available today than ever before

FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED
• Performance
• Management Tools
• Platform Support
• Migration
• Resource Management
• Isolation and Security
• Server Utilization
• Migration between Physical to Virtual Servers11
![Page 12: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
VIRTUAL SERVERS VS NORMAL SERVERS
12
![Page 13: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
VIRTUAL SERVERS VS NORMAL SERVERS
Normal Server Virtual Server• 1 OS & 1 Application *Multiple applications
on each of them. are running on multiple operating
systems.
• Some OS don’t use all *Each OS/Application
resources of a Server is isolated from the others
*Server resources are reserved separately
for each OS/Appn.
13
![Page 14: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
VIRTUALIZATION VS CLOUD COMPUTING
• Virtualization is a technical trick allowing resources to be allocated when you need them.
Cloud computing is a paradigm mostly based on dynamic resources allocation.
• Cloud computing- Borrowing Additional Resources
• Virtualization- Setting up required no: of servers in less time and shut them down after use.
14
![Page 15: SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051015/5533cfd35503463b508b4a29/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
ADVANTAGES OF SERVER VIRTUALIZATION
• Good resource utilization ratio.• Enables server consolidation.
• Helps to test and learn a sofwtare.
• Effective disaster recovery strategy.
• On-demand resource allocation.• Operating System neutral technology.
• Enhancing security.• Hardware independent.

DISADVANTAGES OF SERVER VIRTUALIZATION
• 64-bit computing is preferred for server virtualization.
• Extra processing power for hypervisor.
• Resources hungry
• Complexity
16

CONCLUSION
• Server virtualization technology is the core of the dynamic resource scheduling.
• It allows to reduce the no of Physical Servers.
• Virtualized servers can be activated, and can be restarted within a limited time to create an important server.
