If you do not have the prescribed service/maintenance work or any required repairscarried out, this could result in malfunctionsor system failures.# Always have the prescribed service/
maintenance work as well any requiredrepairs carried out at a qualified spe‐cialist workshop.
Always observe the service display in the instru‐ment cluster. You can find further information inthe vehicle Operating Instructions.Have the specified service carried out within theremaining time period or the remaining distance.Additional maintenance work is taken intoaccount depending on time and distance driven.Additional maintenance work includes mainte‐nance work carried out due to technical require‐ments in cases of wear or work carried out onany optional equipment that might require
service. This work is carried out and invoicedseparately.% You can obtain up-to-date information con‐
cerning the servicing of your vehicle at anytime from a qualified specialist workshop,e.g. an authorized Sprinter Dealer. This couldinclude, for example, an overview of servicework or possible additional maintenancework.

Sprinter Dealer can ensure that your vehicle isprofessionally and thoroughly maintained andrepaired.You can find detailed information on the war‐ranty terms and conditions and scope of cover inthe service and warranty information booklet.Please observe the instructions for service andmaintenance work, even if you allow a thirdparty to use the vehicle and entrust them withthe care of the vehicle. This is the only way toensure that your warranty rights are not affec‐ted.We strongly recommend that you have your vehi‐cle serviced at a Sprinter Dealer who is fullyequipped to provide this service.Please note that engine maintenance must beperformed according to special instructions andusing special measuring equipment, in order tofulfill the legal requirements for exhaust gasemissions. Modifying or tampering with compo‐nents of the emission control system is not per‐mitted.Your authorized Sprinter Dealer is familiar withthe applicable regulations.

Special service requirementsSpecial service requirements may be necessary,for example, for certain components after abreaking-in period.Service and maintenance work will need to beperformed more often or in addition if the vehi‐cle is operated under arduous conditions orincreased loads. Take great care when assessingthe operating conditions under which your vehi‐cle is primarily used.% You can obtain up-to-date information con‐
cerning the particular service requirementsand service intervals of your vehicle at anytime from a qualified specialist workshop,e.g. an authorized Sprinter Dealer.
Tire rotationThe tires are essential to the total performanceand stability of the vehicle. The service life oftires depends on tire type, speed rating, environ‐mental conditions, tire load, tire pressure, roadsurface characteristics and individual drivingstyle. For this reason, we recommend checkingthe tires regularly for wear and the correct tire
pressure as well as the proper tire configuration,i.e. regular wheel rotation.Wheel rotation may only be performed on vehi‐cles with identical tire size on the front and rearaxles.If the tire configuration of your vehicle permitswheel rotation, this should be carried out at therecommended intervals or at the first signs ofuneven treadwear. Adherence to this recommen‐dation means that the wheels will be rotated atleast at every maintenance service.
Rear single tiresIf your vehicle is equipped with tires of the samesize, the wheels on the front and rear axles canbe rotated in pairs, allowing the intended direc‐tion of rotation of the tires to be maintained (uni‐directional tires have an arrow on the tire side‐wall indicating the intended direction of rotationof the tire).
Rear twin tiresIf your vehicle is equipped with tires of the samesize, the wheels on the front axle and the innerwheels on the rear axle can be rotated in pairs,allowing the intended direction of rotation of the
tires to be maintained. For non-unidirectionaltires, the outer wheels on the rear axle can berotated.

Regular checksCheck the following regularly, e.g. weekly, whenrefueling or prior to long journeys:R Engine oil level: you can find further infor‐
mation on measuring the engine oil level inthe vehicle Operating Instructions.R Coolant level: you can find further informa‐
tion on checking the coolant level in the vehi‐cle Operating Instructions.R Brake fluid level: if the brake fluid needs to
be refilled, consult an authorized SprinterDealer and have the cause determined, e.g.leakage or worn brakepads.R Windshield washer system: add windshield
washer fluid that has been mixed with anapproved windshield washer solution/concentrate. Check the function of the sys‐tem and the wiper blades.R Lighting systemR Tire condition and tire pressure: check
these at least once a month. Information onguidelines and the correct method of check‐ing tire condition and tire pressure can be
found in the "Tires and wheels" chapter inthe Operating Instructions.
Maintenance of the emissions control sys‐tem or the exhaust gas aftertreatment sys‐tem
Cautionary notes for the emissions controlsystem – gasoline engines
Your vehicle is equipped with a three-way cata‐lytic converter and a lambda sensor in order tocomply with the current exhaust gas standards.Keep your vehicle in a proper condition inaccordance with the maintenance recommenda‐tions.Observe the following instructions.a) Only refuel vehicles with petrol engines with low-sulfur unleaded petrol with a mini‐mum of 87 AKI/91 RON in accordance with the information on the filling pump, provi‐ded there are no other recommendations.Refueling using unsuitable fuel can cause dam‐age to the engine. You can find further informa‐tion in the "Operating fluids and filling capaci‐
ties" section of the vehicle Operating Instruc‐tions.b) Leaded fuel must not be used under any circumstances. This would result in damage tothe emissions control system.c) An ethanol concentration greater than E10 may not be used in vehicles with a gaso‐line engine which are not flex-fuel-compati‐ble. The engine may be damaged if incorrectfuels are used. You can find further informationin the "Operating fluids and filling capacities"section of the vehicle Operating Instructions.d) The specified maintenance work on the engine must be performed in full and at the required intervals. The correct ignition settingand spark plugs which are in correct workingorder are important, for example, for the cata‐lytic converters to achieve the maximum possi‐ble service life. If the specified maintenancework is not performed properly, this can have anadverse effect your vehicle's emissions controlsystem and its operating life.e) Operation of the emissions control sys‐tem must not be modified in any way. Altera‐

tions are not permissible by law. In addition,modifications could result in damage to catalyticconverters, to higher fuel consumption and to adeterioration in the operating conditions of theengine.f) Irregularities when operating the engine should be rectified immediately by an authorized Sprinter Dealer. Such irregularoperating conditions may affect the correctoperation of the emissions control system.If the Check Engine indicator lamp in the instru‐ment cluster lights up while the engine is run‐ning, this is an indication of a potential malfunc‐tion in the engine management or emissionscontrol system.
Cautionary notes for the exhaust gas after‐treatment system – diesel engines
Your vehicle is equipped with an exhaust gasaftertreatment system in order to fulfill the cur‐rent emissions regulations for diesel engines inregions in which the vehicle has been certifiedfor sale. Keep your vehicle in a proper condition
in accordance with the maintenance recommen‐dations.The following instructions must be adhered to:a) Diesel engines require ULTRA-LOW SUL‐FUR HIGHWAY DIESEL (ULSD) FUEL (max. 15 ppm sulfur) as per standard ASTM D975.The vehicle exhaust gas aftertreatment systemcan be severely damaged if ULTRA-LOW SULFURHIGHWAY DIESEL (ULSD) FUEL is not used.b) We approve the use of bio-diesel B5 (standard ULSD with up to 5% bio-diesel con‐tent) in all BlueTEC diesel engines.Diesel fuel with a higher percentage of bio-die‐sel, e.g. B20 and pure bio-diesel could damagethe engine or the fuel system and are not permit‐ted.You can obtain further information from anauthorized Sprinter dealer or at a gas station. Ifthe identification of the B5 bio-diesel mixturedoes not clearly indicate that it fulfills therequirements mentioned above, the fuel may notbe used. Damage arising from the use of fuels,which do not meet the fuel standards approved
by us, are not covered by the limited warrantyfor new vehicles.c) The specified maintenance work on the engine must be performed in full and at the required intervals.d) The operation of the exhaust gas after‐treatment system may not be modified in any way. Modifications are prohibited by law. Inaddition, modifications could lead to damage tothe catalytic converters, increased fuel con‐sumption and a deterioration in the engine oper‐ating conditions.If the CHECK ENGINE indicator lamp lights up inthe instrument cluster while the engine is run‐ning, there may be a malfunction in the enginecontrol system or the exhaust gas aftertreat‐ment system.Have the cause for the malfunction rectified in aqualified specialist workshop without delay. Werecommend that you use an authorized Sprinterdealer.

BlueTec exhaust gas aftertreatment withDEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)
The BlueTec exhaust gas aftertreatment systemrequires a reducing agent (DEF) in order to func‐tion correctly.Further information on DEF (Diesel ExhaustFluid) can be found in the "Operating fluids andfill capacities" chapter of the vehicle OperatingInstructions.The reducing agent (DEF) is a non-flammable,non-toxic, colorless, odorless and water-solublefluid.
* NOTE Damage caused by additives inDEF or by diluting DEF
The BlueTec® exhaust gas aftertreatmentsystem could be destroyed by the following:R Additives in DEFR Diluting DEF
# Only use DEF in accordance with ISO22241.
# Do not mix additives.
# Do not dilute DEF.
Description of the maintenance work onthe exhaust gas cleaning or exhaust gasaftertreatment
The composition of the exhaust gases is not onlyinfluenced by the respective exhaust gas clean‐ing system or the respective emissions controlsystem, but also by the various engine compo‐nents and their settings.For this reason, maintenance of the exhaust gascleaning system or emissions control systemmust also include maintenance of these enginecomponents. In practice, some of this work onlyinvolves tests. Nevertheless, these tests areimportant because irregularities, which could ata later stage result in poorer emission values,can be detected as early as possible. It is gener‐ally more cost-effective to have such issues rem‐edied immediately, rather than waiting until theyresult in a need for expensive repairs. The main‐tenance intervals have been determined so thatthe vehicle, under normal operating conditions,
should operate properly between maintenanceservices (/ page 4).
Replacing the engine oil and engine oil filterChange engine oil and replace engine oil filtersin accordance with the specified service inter‐vals. If the oil consumption increases, you mustdetermine the reason and take the necessarysteps to remedy the problem. Do not reset theservice interval display if you have refilled orchanged oil outside the specified service inter‐vals.
Replacing the air filter elementReplace the air filter element in accordance withthe specified maintenance interval. In operatingconditions where large dust levels are gener‐ated, the air filter element must be replacedmore regularly than is indicated by the serviceinterval display. Before removing it, clean thecover and the housing of the air filter element.
Replacing the fuel filter(if applicable)Replace the fuel filter in accordance with thespecified maintenance interval.

Checking the condition of the poly-V-belt onthe engineThe poly-V-belt is subject to wear and aging. Itmust be checked for cracks and wear accordingto the specified maintenance intervals. Replacethe poly-V-belt if necessary.
Replacing the spark plugs(if applicable)Spark plugs are subject to electrode erosion andmust be replaced according to the specifiedservice interval. If the vehicle is operated underarduous conditions, the spark plugs must bereplaced more often.
Refilling DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)(if applicable)Refill the reducing agent (DEF) in accordancewith the specified service interval, and when youare requested to do so in the instrument cluster.You can find further information in the vehicleOperating Instructions, e.g. to identify the fillerneck for the reducing agent (DEF) on your vehi‐cle.
Checking the diesel particle filter(if applicable)The saturation level of the diesel particle filtermust first be checked in accordance with thespecified maintenance interval.If the saturation level is still below the thresholdvalue at the first check, the saturation level ofthe diesel particle filter must be checked againas part of each subsequent service appoint‐ment.If the fill level of the diesel particulate filter isabove the limit value, the diesel particulate filtershould be replaced.Once the new diesel particle filter has beeninstalled, the checking cycle starts again inaccordance with the specified maintenanceinterval.
Service recordsConfirmation that the service and maintenancework has been carried out is entered in theMaintenance Booklet.
No other repair work that may have been per‐formed on your vehicle is recorded or documen‐ted alongside the listed service and maintenancework in this Maintenance Booklet. Therefore,keep these receipts together with the docu‐ments for your vehicle.Information relevant to the warranty can befound in your service and warranty informationbooklet.Your authorized Sprinter dealer will be happy toprovide you with all necessary informationregarding the maintenance of your vehicle.
