Catholic Charities: Family Service Center

Agency Description: Catholic Charities’ Family Service Center provides temporary housing for Ramsey County

families experiencing homelessness. As many as 65 adults and children may stay at the Family Service Center

each night. Families may stay for a maximum of 120 days per year. Families receive housing and employment

search resources and other services to help them transition from homelessness to stable housing. Family

Service Center also helped develop and actively participates in the newly-launched Coordinated Assessment

system, Coordinated Access to Housing and Shelter, which standardizes consistent and uniform assessments

and referrals to housing programs. Through Family Service Center and Coordinated Assessment, families are

able to more rapidly achieve housing stability .

Position Description:

Students who serve at the Family Service Center will assist with the preparation and serving of one of the

meals. Breakfast, lunch and dinner shifts are available Monday –Sunday. Please contact us for times and days

available. Shifts can be 2-3 hours.

Good in the ‘Hood

Agency Description: Good in the 'Hood is an organization dedicated to intentional acts of kindness that can simply make a difference in one life, one family, and one community at a time. We invite you to take a look at our programs, and to partner with us as we seek to inspire a contagious momentum of kindness in the urban and suburban communities. Position Description: Just a positive can-do attitude with appropriate work clothing (no open-toed shoes) is all you need. Food in the 'Hood set-up and distributions are the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month at our Bloomington location 1630 E 90th. St. Bloomington, MN 55425. We have 2 volunteer shifts available:

12:00-4:00 pm (unloading trucks, set-up facility, pre-bagging produce, cleaning, administrative work, etc.)

4:30-9:00 pm (serving meals, distributing groceries, carrying boxes of food, childcare opportunities, cleaning, administration, etc.)

How to Apply: To get started, please do the following: 1. Please visit the website at www.goodinthehood.org click the yellow volunteer button on the page and that

will take you to the volunteer page. Once you're on the volunteer page you click the blue “Volunteer Registration” button at the bottom of the page and that will bring you to a listing of all upcoming volunteer events. (If this link doesn't work in Explorer try opening it in another browser like Chrome). Register for event(s).

2. Once you have registered for a particular event, date and time we invite you to arrive on the date of choice ready to serve. Be sure to let the event supervisor know that you are a Normandale student to track your hours.

Loaves and Fishes

www.loavesandfishesmn.org/ Agency Description: The mission of Loaves & Fishes is to provide nutritious meals to those facing hunger in Minnesota in an atmosphere of hospitality at site locations where the need is greatest. Over 6500 volunteers assist in serving at dining sites across the state of Minnesota serving nearly 1,900 meals every night. Position Description: Volunteers work together at our dining sites, along with Loaves & Fishes staff, to share a meal with our guests. Volunteers can serve in one or all of the following ways:

Meal preparation: Volunteers work at the dining sites with Loaves & Fishes Site Coordinators to prepare meals. No special cooking skills are required!

Meal serving & clean up: Volunteers work together to serve the meal, either serving guests as they come through a line or by serving trays of food to guests at tables. Volunteers help throughout the meal as well as after the meal to assist with kitchen and dining area clean up.

Guest Hospitality: Some individuals serve as hospitality volunteers by visiting with guests, sharing a meal and conversation.

Locations: Various locations throughout the Twin Cities Metro and outstate. How to Apply:

Note about Tracking Hours: Volunteers must get a Loaves and Fishes or Normandale timesheet signed each time they volunteer or they can get a Normandale timesheet signed. Students can pickup a Normandale timesheet in the Center for Experiential Education in C1066 or can download a timesheet online at www.normandale.edu/cee under “Key Partners.” Loaves and Fishes does not keep track of volunteer hours centrally so you must get a timesheet signed each time you volunteer. Turn in completed timesheets to the Center for Experiential Education (C1066).

Open Arms MN

Agency Description: Open Arms of Minnesota offers a unique model of care for people in our community who are sick, need nutritious food, and have nowhere else to turn for assistance. Open Arms is the only nonprofit organization in the state that cooks and delivers free meals specifically tailored to meet the nutrition needs of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, MS, ALS, cancer and more than 60 other diseases. Position Description: Open Arms was founded as a volunteer-driven organization and we continue to rely on the dedication of our volunteers for every aspect of our operation. Our volunteers have fun while they make a profound difference in the lives of our clients. Join us in one of the following volunteer opportunities, designed to fit any schedule!

Meal Delivery: From the Open Arms kitchen to our clients’ doors, meal deliveries are an essential part of our organization and our greatest volunteer need. Delivering is the number one way to truly see the impact of our work on our clients, as you get to personally hand them delicious food and see their smile in return. Meal deliveries start at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. A typical route consists of 4 - 6 stops in an area of the Twin Cities and takes 1 hour - 2 hours to complete. Volunteers deliver in their own vehicles. You can volunteer in a pair if you prefer.

How to Apply: First, go to Open Arms' website (http://www.openarmsmn.org/new-volunteers/) and sign up for a required New Volunteer Orientation (which lasts 2 hours). Orientations fill up quickly so sign up as soon as you can. During this required training, you'll learn all about the work of Open Arms and the volunteer opportunities available. After you complete new volunteer orientation you will be able to sign up for volunteer shifts online!

The Open Door Mobile Pantry https://theopendoorpantry.org/ Agency Description: The Open Door is a hunger relief organization dedicated to ending local hunger through access to healthy food. Through its collective programs, The Open Door serves almost 5,000 Dakota County residents each month, and distributes over 1 million pounds of food annually, 70% of which is fresh and/or perishable. Clients are able to access healthy food choices through a fixed-site food pantry in Eagan, 14 Mobile Pantry sites, the Mobile Lunchbox, and the Garden to Table program. Position Description: The Mobile Pantry features three distinct volunteering shifts between the hours of 8am-4pm on weekdays, and these shifts are comprised as follows:

Morning Intake/Stocking: Assist in receiving and storing our daily ‘food rescue’ from Target, Cub Foods & Fresh Thyme, then loading the perishable coolers for Mobile Pantry distribution that day – Shift: 8:30am-11am

Mobile Pantry Driver & Shopper: Working in pairs, volunteers bring the Mobile Pantry vehicle to the assigned site for the given day, and assist clients in selecting, bagging, weighing and recording their food items received. Each client has a 10 minute appointment to shop through the Mobile Pantry selections, and a given site features 8-15 clients shopping each day, at each site. Shift: Hours vary slightly based on distribution sites, but commonly run between 11am-2:30pm

Mobile Pantry Wrap-Up: Upon the return of the Mobile Pantry vehicle or vehicles, volunteers assist in off-loading and wiping down the perishable food coolers, and restocking the canned, dry goods bins for the next day’s site distribution. Shift: 2:30pm-4pm

Location: The Mobile Pantry operation of the Open Door is located in Apple Valley at: 14757 Energy Way Apple Valley, MN 55124 Why Us? We ‘challenge’ all of our volunteers to find another organization where their immediate and ongoing contributions of time, energy and effort will be as valued and appreciated as it is with us here at The Mobile Pantry. We are a small team of dedicated staff and volunteers, and any additional help goes a long way towards helping us address the issue of hunger in Dakota County for those facing transportation and other barriers to accessing more traditional food shelves. Second Harvest Heartland

Agency Description: Second Harvest Heartland, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is the Upper Midwest's largest hunger-relief organization, with a mission of ending hunger through community partnerships. In 2016, we delivered more than 80 million meals to nearly 1,000 food shelves, pantries and other partner programs serving 59 counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. We have locations in Maplewood and Golden Valley. Position Description: We have morning, afternoon, evening and weekend volunteer opportunities. Sign up using our online calendar on our website (www.2harvest.org/volunteer). Food Sorting and Re-Packing: Volunteers are needed to sort and re-pack food from food drives and donations, re-package bulk food such as pasta or cereal into consumer size packages, sort and salvage food items, or label cans. These items go to our partner agencies, including food shelves and soup kitchens that serve people at risk for hunger. This position requires that you are able to stand for several hours. Opportunities are available at our Maplewood and Golden Valley locations during the day and on evenings and weekends.

email. **Note: all the shifts you sign up for online you do not need a training/orientation ahead of time, simply show up at the designated time. There will be a staff member there to greet you, explain the project and help get you started. _______________________________________________________________________________________

VEAP Agency Description: VEAP (Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People) is a basic needs and social service

organization whose programs provide access to healthy foods, social services and transportation for residents

of Bloomington, Richfield, Edina, and a portion of south Minneapolis. VEAP is a trusted partner, establishing

connections and developing confidence for clients facing financial uncertainty. Through the use of 3,100

volunteers, VEAP unites neighbors around a common goal of building stronger, more hopeful,

communities. VEAP is located at 9600 Aldrich Avenue South, Bloomington, MN 55420.

Position Description: Volunteer areas include but are not limited to: Warehouse and Distribution Areas. These positions provide support to the Food Program services through scheduling food appointments, receiving and sorting donated products, stocking shelves, assisting clients in the Distribution Area, and preparing and distributing healthy food samples.

How to Apply: Easy track option for Warehouse and/Distribution Areas:

1. Fill out brief registration form: Food Program Volunteering 2. Receive email confirmation with location, parking, entrance, etc. 3. Arrive prepared-will complete compliance paperwork (over 18 only), given a brief tour, introduced to

shift leader and begin volunteering. General track option for all other volunteer areas:

1. Fill out complete application form and select an Informational Meeting session to not delay your volunteering: General Volunteering (over 18)

2. Attend and be engaged in VEAP’s Informational Meeting. 3. Have a brief placement interview with the Volunteer Department staff, where you'll schedule a
