1 Service-Learning Handout Adult Options in Education Agency Description: Free, local classes include English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Education (for adults who want to acquire or improve their math, reading, grammar or writing skills), GED preparation and testing, computer skills, and Career Pathways. Volunteer Description: Classes are at the Community Education Centers in Hopkins and Minnetonka, and at St. Louis Park AOIE's Learning Center. Classes are held mornings, afternoons, and evenings. Volunteers work closely with classroom teachers to implement academic lessons and/or lead small groups in conversation, math, reading, writing, basic computer skills, distance learning, and more. Service-learning placement is limited. Full commitment to the assignment is required. The goal of the program is to help American Indian youth develop and strengthen skills they need to make positive life choices and live healthy lifestyles. Ginew is located in the Minneapolis American Indian Center at 1530 E Franklin Ave Minneapolis, MN 55404. Position Description: Volunteers assist with the after school prevention program including helping with homework during the Indian Youth Study Time and helping kids get involved with sports and exercise during the recreation time. Volunteers also help prepare meals occasionally and assist with programming and are encouraged to share their talents and interests. Schedule: The after school program is Mondays through Thursdays at the following times( some later nights if needed). Living Well

Agency Description: Each day at Living Well Disability Services we partner with people to realize their goals and potential in communities throughout the Greater Twin Cities metro area. We serve almost 200 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at our 34 homes where volunteers play an integral part in our mission to transform lives. We are dedicated to supporting health in mind, body and spirit through our ‘culture of

wellness’. Position Description: Evening Chill Out Champs – Help clean up after dinner and be a part of end-of-day activities like playing a quiet game, reading a story, or listening to music. You’ll be assigned to one of our neighborhood homes and get to know the people that live and work there while supporting them to have an enjoyable evening. Shift times are once a week 6p-8p (time may vary slightly depending on location needs) – you pick the day. How to Apply: Apply online at https://livingwell.org/volunteer/ - click on “Volunteer With Your Heart” to submit our volunteer application. You will then be contacted by the Volunteer Manager to discuss the best placement option for you. All volunteers are required to complete a background check, including fingerprinting, which can take 7 - 14 days to complete. People Serving People:

Agency Description: People Serving People provides emergency housing and community services that assist families experiencing homelessness in becoming self-sufficient and reconnecting with the community. In a safe, secure and sober environment, PSP provides services which cultivate independence and accountability. What distinguishes PSP from other emergency shelters is the broad range of on-site programs and services designed to address common barriers that homeless families are faced with. To provide a new opportunity for families, it is necessary that we help them find ways to break through these barriers and stop patterns that lead to poverty and homelessness. Housing and employment issues are addressed, along with educational, emotional, early childhood development, and life enrichment needs. Position Description: Volunteers allow PSP to provide necessary services to our families. In fact, in 2018, over 6,200

PSP volunteers generously contributed over 32,000 hours of service. Volunteers make a difference! We have long term and one-time volunteer positions available. Complete online application, pass a background check and commit to a weekly schedule for 3 months. Long Term Volunteer Positions: Commit to a regular weekly schedule for 2-3 months. Age: 18 +

Assist our staff in our Infant/Toddler School and/or Preschools (6 wks-5 yrs)

Resident Resources Assistant

Help our front desk staff assist PSP guests. Duties include guest check-in, answering phones, and dispensing hygiene items. You must be able to work in a diverse and fast-paced setting.

Assist our housekeeping department with duties including general upkeep of the building and donation sorting.

Donation Assistant Assist our donation team with sorting donations so that the donated items get to the departments that need items faster

M: 10am-12pm, 12-2pm, T: 8am-2pm (2 hour shift), W: 1:30-3:30pm, H: 10am-12pm

WISE

Agency Description: Women's Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) is a multicultural 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization serving immigrant/refugee women and girls from all countries, cultures, and socio-economic backgrounds. WISE started in 1995 to provide opportunities for women and girls in the immigrant communities to achieve their full potential and to increase their skills towards economic success. WISE utilizes volunteers in many of its programs & benefits greatly from the involvement of college students. For more information, please see the WISE website: https://www.womenofwise.org/ WISE’s Programs Girls Getting Ahead in Leadership (GGAL) is a college preparation, career exploration, and leadership development program for immigrant/refugee girls in grades 6-12. The program is structured around:

· Educational Workshops: Provide information on planning, financing, preparing for college and career exploration. · Group Activities/Discussions: Provide resources on organization, time management, self-esteem, public speaking, and other issues that the girls need and want to discuss. · Support Services: Provide individual assistance in areas of academics, scholarship searches, job/internship research, and personal issues.

WeLead Program: Once participants graduate from high school and go to college they become a part of the GGAL Alumnae Program. The purpose of this program is to provide academic support and career coaching to participants as they complete their educational degrees. The program is structured around:

· Weekly homework help sessions · Monthly workshops on professional development topics such as resume writing, interviewing, and financial management · Support services: providing assistance in areas such as scholarship application, internship applications, and personal issues.

Position Description: As a volunteer mentor you will have the opportunity to connect with participants in the GGAL or WeLead and learn about the issues impacting refugee/immigrant communities. Skills you will gain from this experience include: counseling, communicating across culture and differences, tutoring, academic advising, public speaking, and program implementation. Role/Responsibilities:

· Time Commitment: One academic semester, participating in one weekly GGAL/GGAL Alumnae program session. · Facilitate small group activities such as ice breakers, reflections, or discussions · Work one-on-one with girls during session · Attend Mentor Training Session to maximize your impact as a mentor · Assist with program session set up and clean up · Have fun! Get to know program participants and provide positive encouragement.

• 1 after school site: Oromo Community of Minnesota (465 N Mackubin St, St Paul, MN 55103), Tuesdays and Thursdays; 4:00pm-5:30pm • 1 school day site: Washington Tech Magnet High School (1495 Rice St, St Paul, MN 55117), Mondays - Friday 1:45pm-3:00pm; Mondays & Wednesdays 3:00-5:00 pm

o WeLead is held at WISE’s office (570 N Asbury St # 202, St Paul, MN 55104) (HW help sessions are weekly, Saturdays 12-3pm)
