SECTION I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL

This manual is provided for the installation, operation, and maintenance of the US&S Audio Track Transceiver, ATT-10. Section I briefly describes the system and lists the operating specifications. Section II deals with the principles of operation and gives a detailed description of the transmitter and receiver circuits. Section III covers the installation of four basic kinds of track circuit applications. Field maintenance instructions are given in Section IV. Section v deals with shop maintenance, including the testing of transmitter and receiver PC boards. Trouble shooting procedure is outlined in Section VI. Parts lists for the ATT-10 Transceiver unit are contained in Appendix A and the ordering references and the mailing address are given in Section VII.

1.2 PURPOSE

The ATT-10 can be used in applications such as, highway crossing island circuits, switch lock protection, and general vehicle detection. Both series and shunt type track circuits are possible.

1.3 DESCRIPTION (Refer to Figure 1-1)

The ATT-10 is a short range, 12 to 2a KHz audio frequency overlay track circuit. It is a transceiver: a single unit contains both a transmitter and a receiver. The unit operates at high audio frequencies to provide sharp block definition. The use of insulated joints is not required and track circuits up to 300 feet are realizable even under poor ballast conditions. Ringby is on the order of 5 to 10 feet and will not change appreciably with ballast variation.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

2.1 .GENERAL

This section provides a functional description of the ATT-10 system and circuit description of the transmitter and receiver individual printed circuit boards.

2.2 SYSTEM FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

The transmitter produces a high audio frequency output which is sinewave modulated to provide noise immunity. The assigned frequency is introduced into the track through a pair of twisted wires which are connected to the rails. The point at which the wires are connected defines one end of the track circuit. The other end of the track circuit is the point at which the connection for the receiver is made.

Upon receiving the proper frequency, the receiver detects, amplifies, and rectifies the signal to provide a de output to operate an external relay. The receiver detects the presence of a train through the loss of the audio frequency

. signal which is shunted by the train wheels.

2.3 UNIT DESCRIPTION

The unit operates at audio frequencies ranging from 12 to 28 kilohertz, providing sharp block definition. The transmitted signal is amplitude modulated at 52 Hz, providing high noise immunity. The receiver responds only to modulated. signals. The unit can be connected for a series or shunt type track circuit. All track connections are filtered so that the unit is compatible with low frequency overlay equipment and o.c. track circuit equipment. The unit has surge protection and reverse battery protection built into it.

2.4 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION - TRANSMITTER PCB (N451055-7401)

The transmitter circuit diagram is shown in Figure 2-1. Transistor Ql and its associated circuitry comprise a 52 Hz oscillator. Constant signal level is maintained by zener diode, Dl. Transistor Q2 and its associated components form a high frequency oscillator which switches transistor Q3 on and off. Transistor Q3 is a chopper modulator. Inductor Ll and capacitor C3 filter the modulated signal to remove the low frequency component and high frequency harmonics. Resistor Rl2 provides level control. Integrated circuit IC-1 with transistors QS and Q6 make up a unity gain amplifier having low output impedance. Transformer T3, capacitors CS, C6, and C7 comprise a high pass filter to couple the output to the track. Diode 06 provides reverse battery protection, and diode 07, along with the diodes built into transistors QS and Q6, provide surge protection.

UNION SWITCH & SIGNAL m 2.5 CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION - RECEIVER PCB (N451055-7501)

The receiver circuit diagram is shown in Figure 2-2. Capacitors Cl, C2, C3, transformer Tl, and inductor Ll comprise a high Q bandpass filter. Diode Dl is a detector which demodulates the signal. Transistors Ql and Q2 make up an emitter follower to provide a low impedance source for terminals X and Z which are connected to a terminal strap at.the top the ATT-10 unit. Terminals X and Y are connected for a shunt type track circuit while terminals Y and z are connected for a series type track circuit. Integrated circuit IC-1 is a temperature compensated amplifier which increases the signal to a working level. Capacitors C9 and ClO, and diodes 03 and 04 produce a negative DC voltage from the amplified signal to operate an oscillator which acts as a level detector. The output of this oscillator is a 22 KHz signal which is amplified by transistors Q4, QS, Q6, and Q7. This signal is then rectified and filtered by network 07, 08, Cl6, and Cl7 to produce a negative DC voltage to drive the relay. Diode 09 provides reverse battery protection, and capacitor Cl8 provides power surge protection at the battery connection.

WARNING

UNION SWITCH a SIGNAL m

Electric propulsion equipment employing phase control or chopper control may create an excessive amount of electromagnetic interference in the audio spectrum, thereby causing improper or potentially unsafe operation· of audio frequency equipment such as ATT-10.

Proper application of such equipment under the conditions of interference described above requires special engineering analysis. Contact US&S Sales for additional information.

WARNING

OPERATING A HAND-HELD TRANSCEIVER OR OTHER RADIOFREQUENCY DEVICES WITHIN 5 TO 10 FEET OF A SHUNT MODE ATT-10 UNIT MAY CAUSE THE UNIT TO FALSELY ENERGIZE IT'S TRACK RELAY WHEN THE TRACK CIRCUIT IS ACTUALLY OCCUPIED. THIS MAY RESULT IN UNSAFE OPERATING CONDITIONS. DO NOT OPERATE HAND-HELD TRANSCEIVERS OR OTHER RADIO-FREQUENCY DEVICES IN THE VICINITY OF SHUNT-MODE ATT-10 UNITS, ESPECIALLY WHEN TRAIN TRAFFIC IS PRESENT.

FIELD MAINTENANCE

4.1 GENERAL

This section provides instructions for field maintenance of the . US&S Audio Track Transceiver, ATT-10.

4.2 INSPECTION

When the ATT-10 unit is suspected of failure, proceed as follows:

Inspect and make certain that there are no broken conductors, and no loose solder or terminal connections.

Measure the o.c. input voltage for a reading of 8.8 to 16.2 vo.lts. Measure the transmitter output for proper voltage level, and · check the receiver for proper relay voltage level adjustment.

The ATT-10.has no internal fuses and should be returned to the railroad repair facility when it fails to operate properly. (

Substitute a properly operating unit in place of the suspected defective unit. Be sure that the unit being substituted meets the operating frequency and strapping options for that particular application.

SECTION VI

TROUBLESHOOTING

6.1 General

This section provides information for determining when an ATT-10 Transceiver unit has become defective.

6.2 PROCEDURE

When possible, substitute a known properly operating unit in place of the suspected defective unit. Be sure that operating frequency is observed when exchanging units.

Before exchanging units check the following items:

All wiring All soldered connections D.C.input voltage(8.8-16.2 Volts} Transmitter output voltage as shown in Table I Relay adjustment procedure as discussed in paragraph 3.9.

When all the items listed above have been checked and no trouble is found, exchange units. Restored operation by the second unit indicates that the first unit is defective and should be returned to the railroad repair facility for servicing.
