CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS P Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, whose steadfast love is

everlasting, whose faithfulness endures from generation to generation. Amen.

Trusting in the mercy of God, let us confess our sin.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Page 4: Service of the Word REFORMATION LUTHERAN CHURCH … · Service of the Word REFORMATION LUTHERAN CHURCH The Heart of Christ in the Heart of the City Third Sunday After Pentecost –

P Reconciling God, C we confess that we do not trust your abundance, and we deny

your presence in our lives. We place our hope in ourselves and rely on our own efforts. We fail to believe that you provide enough for all. We abuse your good creation for our own benefit. We fear difference and do not welcome others as you have welcomed us. We sin in thought, word, and deed. By your grace, forgive us; through your love, renew us; and in your Spirit, lead us; so that we may live and serve you in newness of life. Amen.

P Beloved of God, by the radical abundance of divine mercy we have peace with God through ☩ Christ Jesus, through whom we have obtained grace upon grace. Our sins are forgiven. Let us live now in hope. For hope does not disappoint, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

GREETING P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the

communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P God of Life, C Even as your people face trauma and distress, you remain near.

As we cry out with those who suffer, lead us to deeper listening, awaken us to opportunities for learning and service, and open our hearts and minds to your promise for future healing by your grace given in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

ACCLAMATION

READING

A reading from Lamentations 1:8-22 8 Jerusalem sinned grievously, so she has become a mockery; all who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans, and turns her face away. 9 Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she took no thought of her future; her downfall was appalling, with none to comfort her. "O LORD, look at my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!" 10 Enemies have stretched out their hands over all her precious things; she has even seen the nations invade her sanctuary, those whom you forbade to enter your congregation. 11 All her people groan as they search for bread; they trade their treasures for food to revive their strength. Look, O LORD, and see how worthless I have become. 12 Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow, which was brought upon me, which the LORD inflicted on the day of his fierce anger. 13 From on high he sent fire; it went deep into my bones; he spread a net for my feet; he turned me back; he has left me stunned, faint all day long. 14 My transgressions were bound into a yoke; by his hand they were fastened together; they weigh on my neck, sapping my strength; the LORD

handed me over to those whom I cannot withstand. 15 The LORD has rejected all my warriors in the midst of me; he proclaimed a time against me to crush my young men; the LORD has trodden as in a wine press the virgin daughter Judah. 16 For these things I weep; my eyes flow with tears; for a comforter is far from me, one to revive my courage; my children are desolate, for the enemy has prevailed. 17 Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one to comfort her; the LORD has commanded against Jacob that his neighbors should become his foes; Jerusalem has become a filthy thing among them. 18 The LORD is in the right, for I have rebelled against his word; but hear, all you peoples, and behold my suffering; my young women and young men have gone into captivity.

19 I called to my lovers but they deceived me; my priests and elders perished in the city while seeking food to revive their strength. 20 See, O LORD, how distressed I am; my stomach churns, my heart is wrung within me, because I have been very rebellious. In the street the sword bereaves; in the house it is like death. 21 They heard how I was groaning, with no one to comfort me. All my enemies heard of my trouble; they are glad that you have done it. Bring on the day you have announced, and let them be as I am. 22 Let all their evil doing come before you; and deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my transgressions; for my groans are many and my heart is faint.

P The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God.

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Page 8: Service of the Word REFORMATION LUTHERAN CHURCH … · Service of the Word REFORMATION LUTHERAN CHURCH The Heart of Christ in the Heart of the City Third Sunday After Pentecost –

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each petition will end, “Lord in your mercy” and the respose will be “Hear our prayer.”

PEACE P The peace of Christ be with you always. C And also with you.

Pass the peace in the comments! Post an emoji or comment as we share the peace of Christ!

Semi-Annual Meeting

The semi-annual meeting of the congregation will be held June 28, 2020 at 10:15am. There will be an online option on Zoom for all members to participate as we review our ministry and elect new

council members.

Please hold Tuesday evening, June 30, from 7 to 8:30 PM, available for an online gathering with hundreds from across southern and northern Nevada as Nevadans for the Common Good hosts an event to respond to the recent listening campaign We plan to ask for specific action from our elected offcials to address (1) what happens to renters when the eviction moratorium is lifted, and (2) how our already underfunded K-through-adult public education system may be impacted by reduced state funding. YOU can participate in this gathering in the comfort of your own home via an online Zoom meeting, and we’d like to impress the governor with as many participants as possible. June Birthdays:

June 22 Linda Birkemeyer June 25 Jada Jackson

June 26 Rev. Matt & Marissa Metevelis

On June 17, 2015, Clementa C. Pinckney, Cynthia Marie Graham Hurd, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Tywanza Sanders, Daniel Lee Simmons, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, and Myra Thompson were murdered by a self-professed white supremacist while they were gathered for Bible study and prayer at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church (often referred to as Mother Emanuel) in Charleston, South Carolina. Pastors Pinckney and Simmons were both graduates of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.

A resolution to commemorate June 17 as a day of repentance for the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine was adopted by the Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA on August 8,

2019. Congregations of the ELCA are encouraged reaffirm their commitment to repenting of the sins of racism and white supremacy which continue to plague this church, to

venerate the martyrdom of the Emanuel Nine, and to mark this day of penitence with study and prayer.
