MASTERCAM NEWS - MASTERCAM X5 NOW CERTIFIED
FOR AUTODESK INVENTOR 2012
CNC Software, developer of Mastercam
CAD/CAM software, announces that its Mastercam X5 CAD/
CAM Software has been certified for Autodesk Inventor 2012 3D
mechanical design software under the Autodesk Inventor Certified
Applications Program. Digital Prototyping with Autodesk
Inventor software gives manufacturers the ability to digitally design,
visualize, and simulate how a product will work under real world
conditions before it is built, which helps reduce cost and increase
efficiency. To be certified, the product must meet certain guidelines
and demonstrate a high level of quality as well as compatibility with
Autodesk Inventor software. Certification is given only after the
product has been tested and approved.
"We are very happy to be certified for Autodesk Inventor
2012. Many Mastercam customers receive Inventor files, so
both communities can be assured of the seamless
integration between our two products," says Gary Har-
greaves, director of business development for CNC Soft-
ware. "The flow from design to manufacture becomes easier
for both Inventor and Mastercam customers, where the de-
signer can be assured that the part designed in Inventor is
precisely the part that is machined with Mastercam. Both
companies are working together to provide customers with
the best in CAD and CAM software. The Mastercam and Autodesk Inventor integration offers users a
way to easily work between the two products and stay ahead of their competition."
Mastercam X5 has a direct add-in for Autodesk Inventor, a great way to boost
productivity. Autodesk Inventor mechanical design software takes engineers beyond 3D to Digital Pro-
totyping by enabling them to design, visualize, and simulate products before they are ever built. Free to
the Mastercam and Autodesk communities, Mastercam Direct enables users to open a model in Master-
cam while in an Inventor session, and then update toolpaths to reflect changes to the model. Mastercam
X5 is able to read in native Inventor files (.IPT and .IAM) for design purposes and toolpath generation.
"Autodesk Inventor software users can import part files and manufacture them quickly using Mastercam
X5" says Carl White, director of digital design product management at Autodesk. "Having partners,
such as Mastercam, in the Autodesk Certified Application Program assures users that the same stan-
dards of product quality we want for Autodesk Inventor are being extended to the Mastercam suite of
solutions.".

ISCAR HEM Support The following Mill toolpaths now support ISCAR HEM (High Efficiency Machining)
and RCTF (Radial Chip Thinning Factor) speeds and feeds calculation functionality:
2D HST - Dynamic Area Mill, Dynamic Core Mill, Dynamic Rest Mill, Dynamic
Contour
3D HST - OptiRough
This new functionality requires that you select an appropriate ISCAR cutting tool from
the tool library. The HEM calculations use the necessary attributes stored with the tool
in the tool library.
What’s New In Mastercam
If you select the Iscar HEM check box on the Tool page, you can set the HEM factor to maximize
speed and efficiency by entering a value or by using the slider bar. The feed rate and spindle speed
are automatically set based on this value.

Default Setting for Locking Feed Rates The Lock Feed rates parameter is now
selected (activated) on the Toolpaths
page in the default system configura-
tion files. Prior to Mastercam X5, this
option was deselected. When activated,
Mastercam locks any feeds and speeds
that you manually enter for your tool
settings in toolpaths.
These feeds and speeds values do not change until you
re-enter them or choose the Re-initialize speeds & feeds option from the Tools page right-
click menu. Note: This functionality is now also available for Lathe. In Lathe, the af-
fected fields are on the Toolpath Parameters page and include Feed Rate, Plunge Feed
Rate, Spindle Speed, and Finish Spindle Speed. For more information about other
Lathe enhancements in Mastercam X5, see Lathe Enhancements on page 131.
ISCAR HEM Support In addition, the Stepover field on the Cut Parameters page changes to a drop-down list. You can only
select a 5%, 7%, or 10% stepover.

To meet the demands of customers who wish to replace their legacy wired and trouble prone system -
perhaps still set up with data switches - or to implement new solutions in workshops where CNCs are
frequently relocated, CIMCO Integration offers DNC-Max Wireless as a turnkey wireless DNC system
letting our well-known DNC-Max software connect to your CNC machines through a Wireless network.
A DNC-Max Wireless solution means:
1. No data cabling is necessary, except for the
short distance from the wireless DNC Device
unit to the physical RS-232 CNC port - here
traditional cable and connectors are used.
2. CNC machine tools may be relocated fre-
quently, but they need not be rewired and
usually not even reconfigured: Identification
(e.g. machine no.) and transmission parame-
ters remain un changed in the current DNC
software set-up.

Master3DGage - Works for a Job Shop
Bloomington, IN MCD Machine is a job shop that runs prototype and production quantities for the
military, medical, and aerospace industries. Founded in 2002, the shop has grown from two employees
in a 900 square foot building to 12 employees in a 12,500 square foot building featuring a wide range of
CNC milling and turning machines. The key to MCD Machine’s success has been technical expertise.
“We really needed an efficient way to check complex parts,” CJ Davis, founder of MCD Machine. “ so
when the Master3DGage powered by Verisurf X came out, it just seemed like the easiest way.”
Master3DGage is an affordable and portable rapid 3D inspection solution that significantly increases
production and improves part quality. The
complete solution automates the 3D
inspection process and quickly \verifies
manufactured parts directly to 3D CAD mod-
els. It is sold and supported by select Master-
cam
resellers.
“Our Master3DGage is a very precise port-
able CMM arm with Verisurf X software that
can quickly verify parts while they are still on
the CNC machine or anywhere else in the
manufacturing process,” said Davis
“Implementing portable inspection into the
manufacturing process identifies issues
quicker, reduces scrap, and significantly im-
proves productivity.”
MCD Machine uses the Master3DGage for
parts with lots of surfaces, like layup tools for
carbon fiber parts that can be easily checked
before they are taken off of the machine. The shop likes the way Verisurf compares the part profile to
the solid model in real time to quickly determine if it’s necessary to re-machine an area or if it’s okay to
pull the part off of the machine.
“First article inspections for higher volume runs can also be done quickly using the same method,” said
Davis. “We set our tolerance on the Master3dGage to the tightest tolerance on the part and compare the
part to the model. This doesn’t necessarily give us actual dimensions, but it does tell us that all features
are in tolerance so we can keep the machine going. In the mean time, we can create an automated in-
spection plan to get us good inspection reports.”

Services 4 Automation Tech Tip
Column heading sort options Data displayed in tables typically allow multiple sorting options. For example, the level
manager can be sorted by level number (ascending or descending) by clicking the number
heading…
or by the quantity of entities on the levels by clicking # Entities…
The Tool manager has similar capabilities and more. Columns can actually be moved and
reordered
