Dear People of St. Patrick: This Sunday at the 12 noon Mass, we welcome a busload of visitors from St. Mary of the Woods Parish on the northwest side of Chicago. As you probably know, this is the parish where I served for five years prior to coming among all of you. They will be praying with us and then touring various sites in our historic village. I am so grateful to Susan Donahue, one of our parishioners and a wonderful tour guide, for planning a tour and being so hospitable to our visitors from the north. The people of St. Mary’s will conclude their visit among us by visiting the Stone Pub Restaurant for some great food and libations. It will be good to visit with my former parish family and to “catch up” with some dear friends. But what I am most looking forward to is introducing you all to them. I want to share with them the many wonderful things we have accomplished together this year and how proud and humbled I am to be your Pastor. Can I just remind all of our young people from the Confirmation Class of 2011 about the special dinner given in your honor this Sunday evening beginning at 6:00 P.M.? The dinner is sponsored by the Youth Ministry Program of the local Lemont parishes, St. Patrick’s, St. Alphonsus, and St. Cyril and Methodius. Father Larry, Fr. Brian, and myself, will be joining you although I might be a little late coming from my visit with the folks from St. Mary’s. Your host will be Mr. Michael Lundberg, our very gifted and talented Youth Minister who serves our three parishes. I hope you feel welcome and will join us for the evening. We, as your Pastors, are very proud of you. We will gather in our Parish Hall. What a great evening this past Friday! To come together as a parish family, as the Lemont community, and as visitors from around the Archdiocese and beyond, was truly awesome! My heartfelt thanks to the members of all of our choirs here at St. Patrick, to those who have been singing the longest among us to those who just joined recently. Thank you for your hours of rehearsals and helping us raise our minds and hearts to the Lord this holy season. My thanks to the talented and gifted visiting musicians who came among us to

enhance our “Redeemed!” concert in such a generous way. My thanks to Betty Slad and her “band of helpers” who hosted a beautiful post-concert reception in our Parish Hall. And last but certainly not least, I hope you will join me in thanking Neil Windt, our Parish Music Director. This young man has brought a spirit among us through his love and passion for music. When we originally talked together a few months back, I simply presented a “kernel” of an idea to Neil about a Lenten concert. With his passion and youthful zeal, he just, as we say in the sports world, “took the ball and ran with it!” I do hope we can continue to present such concerts together in the future! With that being said, after all the hard work and effort, I do hope Neil and the choirs will not run away from me whenever they see me coming. Please remember that the Tri-Parish Reconciliation Service for Lent will be held at St. Cyril’s on Monday, April 18th. A number of confessors will be available from 4P.M.-5:30P.M. and again from 6:30P.M.until 8P.M. For those wishing to experience the forgiveness of God this Lenten season, I invite you on behalf of all the Pastors of Lemont. Finally, a few weeks ago, I preached about a young lady named Marg. She was working in a law office as a para-legal and many who loved her deeply as family and friends, and me her Pastor, just “pegged” her to become a lawyer. And then she said she had to make the toughest phone call to me to say that her “heart” was taking her in a new direction. She wanted to leave the pursuit of law, and to follow a true passion of hers, which she felt was a “calling from God.” Many of you commented and seemed inspired by her story. Since then some of you have asked me about Marg. Well, Marg is a real person. Her name is Marg Guadagno. Her dream, her passion, was to become a chef. She recently was named the Executive Chef of “Tocco” Restaurant in Chicago. She was featured this past Saturday on a television program entitled “First Look Chicago.” She will be coming among us to prepare a gourmet meal as part of her gift to us at our recent school fundraiser. I hope to invite her to come and speak among us in the future, especially to our young people, to help us all remember that we should never give up on our dreams! May God bless you in the week ahead. Father Kurt

THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Page 3

St. Patrick Spread St. Patrick SPRED (Special Religious Education) group is seeking individuals 6 – 10 with developmental and intellectual challenges. In SPRED we focus on faith development by sharing God’s love through Jesus and the friendship of our special SPRED group. We are also in need of Helper Catechists. St. Cyril & Methodius will be hosting an informational meeting on Thursday April 14 at 6:30 in the school building teacher’s lounge. Attending this meeting does not obligate but provides information to make a decision. Please call Lois Ryan 708 715 0425 for further information.

LiveJustly Now that plenty of plastic bags have been collected for the Sleeping Mats for the Lenten project the next discussion is why so many people had so many plastic bags. All people are encouraged to recycle and that is a very necessary and useful thing. It costs money and land to ‘get rid’ of the collective garbage. Do you know where your garbage goes and how much it costs to ‘put’ somewhere? Take some time to investigate. It is eye opening

But since it was plastic bags that were collected it begs the questions of why people have so many. Most all stores have reusable bags. Some are cloth, some are from recycled material and some are heavy duty plastic. Do you use any of them? They do cost some extra money. Some of the heavy duty plastic ones are as little as $0.10 and some that can be purchased on line can cost $35. So there is a variety of choices. It has been reported that some of the bags made from recycled materials contain lead. A couple of companies currently make recycled bags with small amounts of lead. They will of course be working to remove that small amount from their bags. You can find this information on the web. The vast majority of bags are safe if handled properly.

The most important part of reusing bags, no matter what kind is keeping them clean. So do not keep them in the trunk of your car or stuff them inside each other as you empty them of the groceries. If you use cloth or partly cloth, throw them in the washing machine after unloading the groceries. If they are reusable plastic wash them in a non-bacterial-hot water solution, rinse and let dry. It is easy to do and easy on the environment.

All the extra bags were put to good use this Lent now is the time to concentrate on stop collecting them at all!

Dear People of St. Patrick: I wanted to share this “thank you” from Father Ed McLaughlin, our Mission preacher, this year. It is “short, sweet and right to the point,” much like his reflections that he shared with us from his heart. Dear People of St. Patrick and Father Kurt: Thanks so much for the opportunity to preach a Mission among the people of St. Patrick. My thanks to the Mission Team, the witness speakers, and all who worked so hard. I truly enjoyed being with the people of St. Pat’s, and oh yeah, even you and Father Shannon. Peace and blessings this Holy Season. Father Ed McLaughlin Incarnation Parish Palos Heights, IL

"So they took away the stone." - John 11:41

Perhaps one of Our Lord's greatest miracles was the raising of Lazarus. Yet, we see that even in this great miracle Jesus calls others to act. He tells the crowd to roll away the stone from the tomb. And they protest, saying it will stink. How often do we think that something God is asking us to do might "stink" – whether it is giving more of our time, our talent or our treasure? Yet if we are willing to follow Our Lord's command and take away the stones that block us from participating in God's work, we can expect great miracles in our lives.
