A NEW GENERATION – A NEW FOCUS

What does it mean to have a Children’s Learning Center on

our campus? For residents, em-ployees and visitors, it is both heart warming and “a breath of fresh air” to see and hear bright-eyed infants and chatter-ing preschoolers making their daily trek through the path-ways, playgrounds and hallways of Landis Homes. Oh, the delight in the exchange between generations!

For years there was a dream to some day have an on-campus child care center. In November 2002, the Landis Homes Board of Directors adopted a strategic plan for 2003-2006 that called for new opportunities for inter-generational interaction by establishing a child day center. Two years later in November 2004, the new center was opened and we are about to observe our first anniversary. This new program is operated by Hildebrandt Learning Centers, a company with similar values to ours. The new center helps Landis Homes serve the child-care needs of our own staff as well as the children of the sur-rounding community.

Year 2005 also brought re-accreditation. The careful

and thorough

preparation by board, staff and residents, which was occur-ring during the past year, paid off. We had a successful site visit, which determined that we continue to meet the standards set by our national accrediting organization. We now celebrate over 10 years of accreditation experience and are very happy to be accredited until 2010.

Thanks to another stellar effort by healthcare staff, we

experienced a deficiency free state survey. The buzzword these days is “person centered” care, as we implement a more focused approach to creating an environment that is resident focused. It is an exciting jour-ney as we continue to seek ways to improve quality of life and to provide excellent care. The renovation of the Ephrata House Healthcare is nearing comple-tion with plans to begin to start the upgrade of assisted living areas later this year.

Financially, we had a suc-cessful year but not without its challenges. We had to contend with fluctuations in public funding, rising employee health benefit costs and a temporary drop in healthcare and assisted living occupancy. Through a significant team effort of all de-partments, expenses were held below budget and occupancy im-proved. We also enjoyed above budget contributions so that we

ended the year very close to the projected budget.

We are especially grate-ful for a strong and com-petent board and staff who give excellent lead-ership and guidance to Landis Homes. Each year, we are humbled by many of you who willingly volunteer to compliment the efforts of staff. Many also contribute financially helping us strengthen our Caring and Endowment Funds. As we look to the future, we covet your continued prayers as we

lead and serve from generation to generation at Landis Homes.

Children’s Learning Center The opening of the Chil-dren’s Learning Center in November 2004 brought the sounds, sights and in-teractions of children into the lives of residents on a daily basis. The teachers and Landis Homes staff have found creative ways to pair old and young to cook, garden, sing, walk, read, celebrate and laugh together. Pictured is Kyle Bitting sharing his hardhat with resident Rhoda King. Summer of 2005 brought

Eagle ScoutMatt Dochter, a member of Boy Scout troop #44, was looking for a suitable project for himself in order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Working with the maintenance department, as well as his scout troop, his father and resident Howard Witmer, pictured, Matt was able to make some upgrades to the Landis Homes woods. The result of his efforts improved the walking paths, the sitting areas and picnic

areas to make them more accessible for residents and visitors. Matt completed the project in the fall of 2004 and received his Eagle Scout rank in March 2005.
