CONGRESSMAN CROWLEY TOURS THE NEW

Crowley Meets withFamilies to Discuss theImportance of Nutri-

tious Foods as Part of aHealthy Lifestyle

On Saturday, August 7, Con-gressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) toured TheNew York Botanical Garden’sRuth Rea Howell Family Gar-den, an initiative to educate chil-dren and their families on thebenefits of growing and prepar-ing healthy food. During his visit,Congressman Crowley met withkids from the Children’s Garden-ing Program, a unique, hands-onprogram that teaches children howto plant, tend to, harvest and eattheir very own fresh produce.Congressman Crowley alsojoined families participating inthe program to discuss the impor-tance of healthy eating and nutri-tion education programs.

“Giving children the firsthandexperience of growing their ownfruits and vegetables can help themdevelop an appreciation for eatinghealthy foods throughout their en-tire lives,” said CongressmanCrowley. “Unfortunately, access

to fresh produce and gardeningspace can be limited in urban areassuch as the Bronx. The BotanicalGarden has opened the door tofresh produce and the experienceof gardening for families in ourcommunity, providing an invalu-able opportunity to learn about themany benefits of growing and eat-

ing healthy foods.”Congressman Crowley has

been a strong advocate of programsthat provide access and resourcesto encourage healthy eating andliving, including the seniors andFarmers Market Nutrition Pro-grams, which allows urban resi-dents, particularly seniors, to pur-chase fresh, regional produce. Con-gress is expected to soon considerimprovements to many federal nu-trition programs, including theschool breakfast and lunch pro-grams and the Women, Infants, andChildren (WIC) nutrition program.

“Congressman Crowley under-stands the importance of educat-ing and empowering our youth sothat they can lead healthy and ac-tive lives. The recent rise in thelevels of obesity and diabetes cur-rently reported are staggering, par-ticularly here in the Bronx,” saidGregory Long, President and CEOof The New York Botanical Gar-den. “The New York BotanicalGarden, thanks to the ongoing sup-port of Congressman Crowley, willcontinue to provide children’s gar-dening and nutritional educationfor our youth in the Bronx.”

CROWLEY VOTES TO SAVE AND CREATEAMERICAN JOBS WHILE REDUCING THE DEFICIT

Bill Will Fund Jobs for Teachers and First Responders by Closing TaxLoopholes That Reward Corporations for Shipping Jobs Overseas

Congressman Joseph Crowley(D-Queens, the Bronx), one ofnine chief deputy whips, voted insupport of the Education Jobs andMedicaid Assistance Act (H.R.1586), a fully paid-for bill thatwill save and create over 300,000jobs. The fiscally responsible bill, which is paid for by closing taxloopholes that reward corporationsthat are shipping jobs overseas, will reduce the federal deficit byan estimated $1.4 billion over 10years. The bill passed by a vote of247 to 161. The Senate passed thebill on August 5, 2010, and it willnow be sent to the President forhis signature.

“Having well-trained cops onthe beat and skilled teachers in theclassroom is vital to the safety andsuccess of our community,” saidCongressman Crowley. “TheDemocratic Congress is workinghard to create jobs, educate ourfuture workforce, strengthen oureconomy and reduce our federaldeficit, and this bill is anotherpositive step in turning these goalsinto reality.”

The Education Jobs and Med-icaid Assistance Act is $26.1 bil-lion funding package that will pro-vide $10 billion for education jobsand $16.1 billion in additional

Medicaid assistance to states that,by reducing shortfalls, will helpkeep many others on the job, in-cluding police officers andfirefighters. According to esti-mates from the Department ofEducation, the $10 billion educa-tion funding will save 161,000teacher jobs, including 8,200 inNew York. The Economic PolicyInstitute (EPI) estimates that theMedicaid funds will save and cre-ate 158,000 jobs, including pre-venting layoffs of police officersand firefighters. More than half ofthese jobs will be in the privatesector, including workers whocontract for or supply services tostate and local governments.

The bill is paid for by closingnumerous tax loopholes that costthe U.S. billions of much-neededdollars and incentivize compa-nies to ship American jobs over-seas, including:

· Shutting down the practice ofsubsidizing U.S. corporations thatare sending jobs overseas at theexpense of U.S. taxpayers by giv-ing them tax benefits for their off-shore operations;

· Requiring companies that taketax breaks for income earnedabroad to declare that earned in-come in the U.S.;

· Ending the taxpayer subsidyof corporate multinational taxbreaks on income that is not eventaxed in the U.S.; and

· Eliminating a loophole thatwas exploited by a subsidiary ofAIG to avoid paying U.S. taxes, allwhile U.S. taxpayers funds wereused to save the company fromfailure.

“This bill is not only fiscallyresponsible in that it helps to re-duce the deficit, it is also fullypaid for by cracking down onbillions of dollars in tax loop-holes that reward companies forshipping jobs overseas – ensuringthat even more American jobs aresaved,” said Crowley.

Congress’ full attention is oncreating jobs and stabilizing andstrengthening the economy. LastDecember, the House passed theJobs for Main Street Act and ear-lier this year President Obamasigned into law the HIRE Act,which provides incentives for busi-nesses to hire workers. These billsincluded critical investments insmall businesses, state infrastruc-ture projects such as school con-struction, and support for job train-ing programs that are keeping po-lice and firefighters on the streetand teachers in classrooms.

ASSEMBLYWOMAN MARKEY ARRANGES FORNEW VOTING SYSTEM TO BE

New scanning system will replace oldlever voting machines at all polling placesstarting with September Primary Election Day

When citizens go to the polls on the nextElection Day in September, they will find thatthe clunky old lever machines are gone and theywill instead mark their votes on a paper ballotthat is run through a scanner to be recorded.

It’s a new era for voting in New YorkCity so to familiarize Queens voters with thenew system, Assemblywoman MargaretMarkey has arranged for the New York CityBoard of Elections to conduct an open pub-lic demonstration of the new system at TheWoodside Branch of the Queens Public Li-brary on Wednesday, August 18.

“Voters will have a new way to cast theirballot this fall and I invite everyone to stopby their local library branch to try out thisnew system,” said Assemblywoman Markey.

The demonstrations will take place be-tween 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. at the WoodsideBranch Library, 54-22 Skillman Avenue. The system will also be demonstrated onAugust 25th at the Maspeth Branch Library,69-61 Grand Avenue.

The change is a result of the federal HelpAmerican Vote Act which mandated that

voters in New York State must have newvoting machines this year. The new systemelectronically records your vote from a pa-per ballot that you mark.

“Take this opportunity to see and use thenew voting system that will be the new stan-dard for all future elections in New York City, and be sure to exercise your right to vote thisfall,” added Assemblywoman Markey.

Sunnyside Shines at the 10th AnnualBix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Concertdirectly across from his, on Bliss Street. “I felt that an address reveredaround the world shouldn’t be unknown right here.” With the help of Fr.Joseph Jerome of All Saints church and Alice Cordona from Assembly-woman Cathy Nolan’s office, word got out and that year the firstmemorial was held to remember the 70th Anniversary of Bix’s death.Since than it has grown into a large outdoor jazz concert, performed bya group of great musicians that have become known as “The BixBeiderbecke Sunnyside Memorial Jazz Orchestra!” Hopefully, Bixwould be proud.

This year, as in past years, Sunnyside resident and Juilliard-trainedprofessional musician Frank Pedulla played trombone and directed thisbig band. The band included such luminaries as Stan Auld, clarinetplayer, singer and alumnus of many famous big-bands; Sunnysideresident David Shenton worked as a sound man and studio musician atthe famous Abbey Road Studios; Mike Ridley trumpeter of the CottonClub Orchestra and a former member of James Brown’s Famous Flames;and Dr. Kirby Jolly, who holds a Doctorate of Music, is musical directorof the American Concert Band and guest conductor at Lincoln Center, who performed all of Bix’s classic parts on a Conn Victor cornet.

In addition to the orchestra, the evening had performances by theSunnyside Drum Corp., lead by Tony Lana, who demonstrated the linkbetween marching band rhythms and early jazz. They were followed bya dance performance by Summer Stock for City Kids. Under thedirection of Sofia Geier, these youngsters performed dance routines tothe 1920’s music of Bix Beiderbecke.

With assistance from the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside and the officeof Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, this year’s concert was enjoyed byresidents and traveling ‘Bixophiles’ alike.

By the way, Bix’s last address was 43-30 Bliss Street where a plaquehonoring the original “Young Man with a Horn” now hangs on the frontof the building.

WOODSIDE ON THE MOVE, INC.PROVIDES FREE GRAFFITI CLEANUP

TO THE WOODSIDE COMMUNITYThe Graffiti Removal and

Job Readiness Training Program(“Green Team”) at Woodsideon the Move, Inc. is a sevenweek summer program designedto give youth an opportunity togain some summer cash and atthe same time some work expe-rience through participating incommunity service oriented ac-tivities like recycling, graffitiremoval, city mural restoration, planting flowers and commu-nity cleanup in the local neigh-borhood parks in Woodside, NY.Students also participate in re-sume preparation, job mock in-terviews and job shadows ac-tivities with local businesses thatgive them an opportunity to ex-plore other career interests oftheir choice.

The “Green Team Program”tries to approach graffiti andgraffiti removal as a “process ofrestoring harmony and visualbalance” to our business com-munities and residential neigh-borhoods. Graffiti re-enforcesthe perception that a communityis on the decline, and that leadsto unnecessary community ero-sion, which studies indicate, alsocontributes to an increase incrime. The youth involved inthe job readiness and commu-nity beautification program learnfrom this activity that there areproper venues for artistic selfexpression, and graffiti vandal-ism is not one of them. Studentslearn about the appropriate re-

moval process as well as thatgraffiti is not just a maintenanceproblem for cities throughoutNYS. They learn that graffiti ison the rise, much of the graffitiis produced by juvenile offend-ers, that some could possibly begang related which can promoteother types of vandalism andthat much is also a result of“tagging” which the vandals useto promote recognition. Studentsget an opportunity to see thepositive activities being accom-plished by their peers and learnfrom it. The local businessesand residents benefit from thefree community beautificationprogram because it improves thequality of the neighborhood. Theyouth work up to 25 hours perweek, Monday through Fridaythroughout the long hot summer

identifying, cleaning and re-cleaning graffiti. Often timestaggers revisit the same siterepeatedly. Many youth returnfor a second or third summerof work experience and con-tinue to visit and or volunteerat the center long after theyhave entered college or securedemployment within their per-spective fields.

Woodside on the Move, Inc.applauds the efforts of Congress-men Crowley, AssemblywomanCatherine Nolan, and Council-men James Van Bramer andDaniel Dromm, the NYS De-partment of Justice and the NYCDepartment for Youth and Com-munity Development who pro-vide the support and fundingneeded for this very importantcommunity effort.
