POPE FRANCIS:

IN HIS OWN WORDS

“None of us is an island, autonomous and independent from others. We can only build the future by standing together, including everyone.”

Do you hear the G e r s h w i n t u n e , “Summertime…and the readin’ is easy?” Here are some suggestions:

Pope Francis certainly has been communicating with his Church and the world – via Twitter as well as through vari-ous letters and books. One of them, The Name of God is Mercy (2015) was written in advance of the Holy Year of Mercy, which concluded last November. He continues to honestly and accessibly address our common human ex-periences with reflections on the grace and loving presence of God. This short book also contains his “bull” which pro-claims and lays out the rationale for the Holy Year. There are so many ways for us to experience and share God’s mercy. On retreat, I picked up the new translation of a book I’d read in seminary days – The Need and the Blessing of Prayer (1997) by Karl Rahner. Originally a series of eight talks at St Michael’s Church in Munich in Lent of 1946, it was originally published in an English translation, “On Prayer” in 1958. Fr Rahner, the heavyweight theologian who became so influential at the Second Vatican Council and whose works were many and vast – but also intense and dense, difficult to readily grasp – was also known as a spiritual powerhouse. His “Encounters with Silence,” com-posed shortly after the Second World War, became a spiri-tual classic. This book was good to re-visit and to plunge more deeply into the mystery, difficulty, and treasure of prayer. Jean Vanier founded the international L’Arche Commu-nity as a way of meeting the needs of disabled individuals as well as open ways for these folks to interact and bless our lives. Some of the wisdom he’s absorbed from these experiences are boiled down into a thin, but beautiful book, Becoming Human (1998). I mentioned that I had read this book and Fr George Strohmeyer (Gannon University) com-mented that it has been one of his own personal favorites – and he has a long and close friendship with Vanier. The author reflects upon our common experiences of loneli-ness, belonging, inclusion, and freedom with many down-to-earth stories. If you haven’t read a Vanier book, put him on your list! Apparently the following book has been making the rounds – and discussions – Hillbilly Elegy (2016) by J.D. Vance. The author was born in Kentucky, but the “family” moved to southern Ohio bringing their culture with them into an area where there were more employment opportuni-ties. Despite all the dysfunction, Vance successfully served in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State, and fin-ished Yale Law School. He well describes his very different upbringing from his classmates and helps us all realize how the odds are often stacked against those who wish to suc-ceed. When I realize how “charmed” my life has been – I’ve avoided so many traumas and tragedies that have beset others my age – it gives me pause to thank God for the blessings – and to do what I can to help others not so fortu-nate.

Take Me to Worship comes to Our Diocese

The Diocese of Erie supports the Take Me to Worship Campaign that will be running in the community from August 15 – Octo-ber 30, 2017. The Bishop believes that the data about the positive impact that regular, weekly participation at Mass has on children of all ages is a good reason for our parishes in Erie County to jump aboard and promote this initiative. It is the hope of the dio-cese that more and more families will come back to their Catholic faith and/or bring about the conversion to Catholicism for those w i t h o u t a f a i t h c o m m u n i t y . and Concern—Mary Margaret Skladonowski, 825-1013 (SJB) or Pat Fronzaglia, 440-1987 (HR)

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: The stress and anxieties of family life are like “thorns which choke off” any opportunity to reflect on God’s presence in our lives. Notice in today’s gospel Jesus “went out of the house” so He could connect with the peo-ple he loved. Grasp five minutes each day to appreciate the people you love.
